We have a strategy when we peruse the Lego Pick-a-Brick wall: only buy pieces we'll actually use. And when the wall has those, we want to get the most out of a box. We show you this strategy here, and how much value we got in one box of pieces.

I went to one of my two local large malls and this location has the largest pick-a-brick wall in the state and usually better pieces. I really enjoy the box (vs. the cup) but was not surprised when LEGO used it as an opportunity to raise the prices. I tend to take a long time to pack/ maximize the large box, when I go. The wall had grey palisade bricks so I stacked and stacked those, along with two by two grey bricks and an assortment of pieces. You and your kids must be FAST at stacking/packing as I'm usually there for about 30 - 40 minutes stacking and organizing and such (to maximize the value). There were also grey cliff/ mountain elements so I like to put two together, seal the top with a 2x2 plate, turn it upside down and fill the cavity with smaller elements like green leaf elements and then use smaller plates to seal off the bottom. Those grey mountain pieces stack somewhat well / like a pair of shoes. At times, I also make tiny "walls" out of say 1x6 brick and, in the space created between the "walls," I pour in tiny elements. Sorry to ramble - really love LEGO as an AFOL. Thanks for sharing your experience - it's great to see what other people in the community like to do.

I filled two large boxes with reddish brown ladder/fence pieces, 5630/6020; I couldn’t believe it. I was specifically looking for pieces to create a fence on the edge of my LEGO city display, I couldn’t have been luckier. Those were elements that stacked really well together. I filled in the gaps and between the bars with the small flame pieces for candles and window panes. Those boxes were PACKED by the time I was done.

This was awesome! I was wondering how the boxes would work out. As a casual collector, I personally haven’t done a pick a brick wall purchase but my kids did when they were smaller. It always seemed like a lot of money for a small number of bricks (a set fur the same amount seemed if more value to me as an adult, but loose bricks had more value to them). As I’m getting into the modular city buildings and I really want to add the family restaurant, I’ll need to assess my loose bricks and add some to my collection.

I love the boxes. So much easier to pack than the cups.

Can’t build anything with Instore PAB wall alone. Need to make huge orders from the online PAB and/or Bricklink to really get everything to build

If you bring your own pab cup do you still have to pay for the box? Or do you not have to pay for the box anyways?

The stores switched entirely, if you bring a cup they will make you fill a box instead, they honored the discount for bringing the cup back but said next time bring the box back for the discount as they weren't going to keep honoring the cup soon.

@@lotr_bricks they told me back in January they were only honoring it until the end of the month, but they might still allow it, depends on the store.

Mine stopped allowing you to use the cup back in January. I do not believe you get the discount for returning with the box anymore.

I've never seen trans blue pieces on the wall. And Lego was sneaky at raising the prices for PAB since switching to the boxes. I'm not sure it's financially worth it anymore. Unless you spend an hour or two obsessing over getting every last piece into the box, I imagine the math to order all the pieces online would be cheaper.

masonry is good to buy, can get 200 or more in a small box, would cost more online. especially light bluish grey and white masonry

I know this is a bit of an older post, but so far it seems like unlike the increase in price, the amount you can stack into a box is quite a bit more on average and still way more than the average bricklink value of those pieces. Even if you can find really cheap vendors on Bricklink, that offer pieces you need at good prices, you still need the quantity to be sufficient and then you also need to pay for shipping, which really adds up if you order from a lot of different stores. The PAB has none of that, you see what is there and if you find enough that you can use, you fill a box with it, or more boxes. Completely filling up the box by stacking has 30% more brick space, which is really good if you stack stuff like Masonry bricks in it.
