'We'd hire him': Florida jogger detained for fitting burglar description, deputies apologize

(Video: Volusia County Sheriff's Office)
"Wrong place -- wrong time," said Joseph Griffin, a Black man who was detained by Florida deputies as they looked for someone wanted in a burglary.
It happened last week when Griffin, while out on a run, was stopped by Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies. The tense encounter between the jogger and deputies "deserves recognition" for how everyone handed it, said the sheriff, who even offered Griffin a job.
"You're not in any in trouble or anything, there's, uh, a burglary that happened -- you kind of fit the description," the responding deputy told Griffin.
"Really?" Griffin responded. He was wearing a white tank job and black shorts.
The real suspect's arrest can be seen at the very end of the bodycam video, deputies say.

What you see on social medias is not the norm. You always have to keep that in mind. Even this one was arguably uploaded because it goes from the norm to positive. Usually it goes from the norm to negative though. Never trust social media. It only uploads things that are not normal because normal is not interesting. If you take social media as average your world view will be fucked up beyond repair in all sorts of ways. I see that way too often.

@RefinedRandy
@RefinedRandy Год назад
@@gobackgina dude the officer was calm and chill as hell. And like he said, it had NOTHING to do with race. His general description matched perfectly to the original report. If you seriously think it's about race, then YOU'RE the racist. I'm white, and I've been detained before just bc I matched the original description of a crime. I was given the exact same treatment. If you ACTUALLY think the average cop is out there "just tryina kill someone" then you need serious mental help. Most people, including cops, don't EVER want to shoot, let alone kill, someone. Consider this, many cops are Christian. And Christian's are EXTREMELY against killing, unless it's to protect yourself and/or your family. Cooperate, and be respectful, and if you did nothing wrong and you cooperate, then you have nothing to worry about. The only people who get scared of cops or resist cops are people who are breaking the law in one way or another. Even if you did nothing wrong, if you start resisting and not cooperating, then you might very well wind up in a bunch of trouble, and maybe even in a box. It's not complicated, and it's not about race. The dude that originally got detained even thanked the officers at the end of the video for being so caring and professional (which was largely due to his cooperation) The guy WHO GOT DETAINED had no harsh feelings, so why do you??? You sound like the problem honey.

The most important part of the interaction is the start. The FIRST thing the law enforcement officer (LEO) did when addressing the man was calmly TELL him WHY he was stopping him (REASONABLE ARTICULABLE SUSPICION; he details the description given of a nearby burglar suspect). The LEO did not escalate the situation; he did not begin the interaction with his weapon drawn, presume the man to be a threat to LEO or public safety, fear for his life, or start barking orders like “Stop! Show me your hands! Turn around! Get on the ground!”-and hypothetically, if someone, uniformed or otherwise, suddenly appeared and began yelling any of those commands (“lawful” or not) at you, wouldn’t your first thought be something akin to “Huh?, “What the hell?”, “Why?”, or even “Run!” (Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn); and the LEO did not rush up to the man intent on physically apprehending him (not reaching out to grab the man’s wrist, arm, or other part of his person) or taking him down. The LEO seemed patient and addressed this man with the PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE (“innocent until proven guilty”). The man’s immediate willingness to offer proof of his identification without being asked may have also contributed a large part to the nature of the encounter. From my experience with military operations and personnel, having/showing proof of identity is a norm so it was probably reflexive on his part. Glad that the man was able to make it home.

Its understandable that many people have frustrations against cops. They are the black sheep of the communities and often secluded in most events. Nobody wants a random person to tell you what to do. Man. The same thing happened to me 25 years ago. Two man robbed a gas station a short and tall guy on a 2003 green Toyota Camry. I was driving through the area and we got pulled over. My brother is 6'2" and me 5'8". My car was green, camry and Toyota. Man what a show. We were held for about 45 minutes. They brought the cashier of the gas station, said it wasn't us. The officers apologized all of them and kept saying sorry for holding us this long. We all went our separate ways.

Similar happened to me with an armed robber. He had the same car as me and his description and tattoos matched me. Cops put the info into their computer and it spat my name out. Kicked my door in etc but they believed me till they found a holster for a WW2 Luger and the gun the dude used was a Luger. Shit got real serious then. The sketch of the dude looked exactly like me and he had a tattoo like mine in the same place. In the end I agreed to allow a victim to identify me or not (because they were going to refuse bail cause of the evidence) and luckily the victim said it wasn't me and i was released

Years ago, my buddy and I were walking back to our apartment in Sacramento one night around 10:00 pm. We had just got some McDonalds and were on a public sidewalk. A cop car flew up on us lights shining and siren blasting and two cops jumped out and started screaming at us “PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!” We both did, and the cops forcefully grabbed us both and held our arms behind our backs. Then they said, and I shit you not: “There was a report of someone spray painting a wall, show us your hands” and then proceeded to let go of our wrists and examine our hands for spray paint spatter. There was none. The dorks didn’t even say sorry or have a good night, they said “alright, get out of here” and my buddy and I did. I was 19 years old and I definitely didn’t feel like an American that night. This type of crap gets out of hand, but the cops in this video compared to the ones I dealt with seemed like saints. Still, I bet the guy who was detained here feels victimized and I don’t blame him one bit.

I've been stop a few times "fitting the description", all of the officers were cool calm and respectful; except for one event. I was pulled up on walking out of the gym to my car. I was told to get on the F*cking ground without even knowing what was going on. I stood there with my hands up refusing to lay in the snow. I was blessed with another officer pulling up and taking over the situation where the other officer was threatening to taser me for not lying in the snow. The whole time I was praying one of my Mom & Dad's neighbors didn't see me in passing.

I can imagine the humiliation and embarrassment he's feeling. This happened to me in 1975. Eight months pregnant walking to the laundrymat with my 2 year old daughter was put in the back of a police car with my daughter said I fit the description of a black woman delivering drugs. My daughter thought we were in a taxi. Once at the police station my baby and I had to stand outside the car while they searched the back of the car. It was a Sunday and they had no female officer to search me. The chief instructed the cop to drop me off where he picked me up. I was crying and nervous. About to pass out. Never been in no trouble. They said legally they couldn't take me home. Some nice people took me inside their home and called my family. My mother went to the police station I thought she was going to jail that day. She went off. I thought she was going to arrest the chief of police.😳

Walked into my school. Pulled me out of the closet. Left the school. Then called half an hour later and was like " *I need to speak to my son* " Then let the staff rip the school apart looking for me. Before saying she should have every single one of their jobs.
