One year ago, I talked about a site (www.nasdisc.com) that I said would be the future of buying and selling vinyl records online. I still believe it could be. I got a little sidetracked opening my record store, but I had some time to check back in with the Nasdisc team and they have some very promising updates to their already impressive online marketplace.
Check em out!

Thank you so so SO much for talking about this. I’ve been an avid user of Discogs since I started collecting records a few years ago, and it’s really bothered me how the site has so many problems that the people running it seem to not care enough to fix. It’s really great to hear that there’s such a promising alternative, though-Nasdisc looks like a fantastic little app, and I’m excited to try it out! Thanks again for telling us about it Matt, I really hope that the rest of the community gets to see this video.

i took a quick peek at Nasdisc and it looks HORRIBLE. 1999 internet vibes. Selection is awful----they have NONE of the underground records i am after, like literally NONE. This may be good for mainstream stuff but it doesn't cut it otherwise. I miss GEMM-----GEMM was a great database for searching for records---SUPER BASIC, i was so sad when it went away. Perpetual returns is silly honestly. Physical media is a one-off license to play the media from the physical thing until it wears out (and not copy it). The Artist gets way more than they do from several streams. When the owner sells it, they obviously can’t play it anymore. It’s like saying ancient companies should get a cut when antiques are sold.

It hurts to see a $15 record going for 50 euros or more on discogs, because shipping costs have destroyed the ability to get record from abroad. I see LPs that are 19.99 at Target being put up for 3x that and it makes collecting on a budget a nightmare. I've had my experiences with scammers on Discogs too.
@TheAgeOfAnalog

Discogs needs a serious commitment to improving their site. There's pretty much no way any other site, current or future, is going to compete with their extensive, basically crowd sourced database.

As a frustrated Discogs seller I would love to use Nasdisc but it doesn't seem to be a very good marketplace for the records I've got - pre-CD Era rock (mostly psych/prog) and all kinds of pre-1995 jazz. It looks great if you're selling contemporary music... EDIT: I'm gonna send a link to this video to Discogs' seller/customer support, although I'm not sure anyone is there. Discogs seems like it's been on autopilot for years.

@@TooManyRecords Unfortunately I think there might be a generational thing keeping that from happening, Nasdisc skews young, Discogs older. I source most of my inventory from estate sales and my GF and I joke that if we had a physical store we'd call it "Dead Boomers' Records".
@dylanbrinkley636
@dylanbrinkley636 Год назад
I'm not sure how I feel about the perpetual returns thing. For one thing I feel like it could be very easily abused. You already have some labels charging a premium because they know a release will sell well on the aftermarket. I feel if they're also getting a cut of those aftermarket prices too it would just incentivise labels to gamble on the aftermarket themselves and thus the prices of records getting even more out of hand. Then you'll have labels charging more because it'll be in their interest for it to sell well on the aftermarket, and as a result those aftermarket prices will also go up. I do agree it's super shitty when someone can sell an artist work for 10 times more than the artist made off the first sale, but it does feel like something that can and will be exploited by a label getting too greedy and starting a domino effect. Or maybe I'm just doomsday preaching, who knows.
@TooManyRecords
@TooManyRecords Год назад
I think it's a bit doomsday preaching, like you said. Until these things start to happen as a direct result of a program like this, I wouldn't be too concerned. Prices are creeping up regardless.

Most of the items I want are overseas. I can't be helped. I really want records with OG sleeve and no generic, but some sellers don't understand that. I'm one of those guys with Ikea type shelves that want to display their goods. Is that so wrong? Also I found so far nothing on my list, but if I start requesting certain things, I'll be in debt up to my eyeballs.
@waldzz
@waldzz Год назад
I think the perpetual returns might be a slippery slope. I have not read up on the details but is the slice of inflation going to the label or direct to the artists themselves? I feel without transparency and accountability it will just be a way for labels to siphon more money from the community/artists
@TooManyRecords
@TooManyRecords Год назад
As I've said in other comments, that's a worst case scenario lens that there's no reason to think will happen. As of now, the 10% fee that the site charges (7% and 3%) goes towards the artist, so they're basically just taking the fee and giving it to the artist. That scales based on the aftermarket prices that something sells for, which the platform isn't responsible for.

The trivial things you mentioned NASDISC was good at could be implemented better/quicker and more efficiently on discogs within a day if discogs cared about those features. I completely disagree with this line of thinking. Discogs has had a decade to get their crap together and it hasn't happened. So your saying if I buy any physical product in life and I hold on to it and that product goes up in value, which I then decide to sell, that the company (artist, etc) should be able to get royalties. As an artist myself I don't think that's a good road to go down it's a physical product and should not be the worry of a company, artist, etc. If a company and or artist are so concerned then they should take the risk and make more product. You can use that same theory with buying a shirt and selling/donating to a second hand store and they sell it and the original shirt company gets a cut, makes no sense. That sounds like a greedy company, artist, etc.. Also I checked out Nasdisc after your video. I think Discogs is by far a better platform, although like any platform they have things they can work on. As a Vinyl collector myself I'm always on the hunt for it, but honestly don't think Nasdisc will appeal to me (needs to be simplified). And to your point saying it’s coming from the platforms money I’m sure that’s wrong. It will come out of the seller/buyers just an extra tax. Everyone wants exclusivity until they miss out.
