We finally coated our foundation wall and it is ready to be filled back in. The coating was pretty tough to work with. After that I got cleaned up and did worked on some small projects, staining wood and fixing some electrical in the basement.

Your videos always amaze me. I really like how you just dive into a job you've never done before and it always turns out looking great. Great work Doug and Ashley, God bless you and your family, such hard workers. If you have stain on your hands you can use hand lotion on them just let it stay on your hands for a bit and a little scrubbing and it takes it off pretty good. Great video as always.

Well, if you ever do it again, the things to do differently are; 1st use what is called a 3 knot brush. screw a handle in it and run a screw into the brush so it doesn't come off the stick when it's all gooey. Because it will come off at the most inopportune time. 2nd, it should take nearly 2 pails to do that much wall. 3rd, while it's still wet, bed a sheet of at least 4 mil poly into it, 6 mil is preferred. The poly should lap over the footer. If you are installing a footer drain, the poly should extend under the aggregate. Now that you are at your forever home, you probably won't need to do it again. But then again, since you are never quite satisfied, you might just build a new home on that site. All in all, it came out pretty goo for an amateur.
@DanielCastro81
@DanielCastro81 4 года назад
Can you explain a bit more: bed a sheet of at least 4 mil poly into it? you mean apply the plastic to the liquid rubber while is wet? like an additional glue? Thanks!
@davidmiller6010
@davidmiller6010 4 года назад
@@DanielCastro81 Exactly, Dan. Smear the whole wall with foundation coating and bed your sheet of plastic in the sticky goo. That way, if any cracks develop in the wall, the poly will bridge the gap, whereas the coating, being firmly stuck to the masonry, will crack right along with the masonry. In New York State, where I build, they have a bizarre requirement to smear another coat foundation coating ON TOP of the poly. I can't for the life of me figure out what advantage there is for that, but it's the code for new construction. Hope this covers it for you. If I left anything out, feel free to shoot me another question, and I will try to clarify.

@@davidmiller6010 Hi David, I just had a 4 foot retaining wall poured with a cold joint , would you coat the joint and beyond into the footing ? Would you also cover the entire floor of the footing with the poly ? Your help would be much appreciated. Mike in California
@davidmiller6010
@davidmiller6010 3 года назад
@@donjose6520 In this case, the poly (plastic) would be a barrier to keep water from coming through the wall, and especially the wall footer joint. A retaining wall is generally designed to hold back earth. Water is a secondary consideration. If that is the case, waterproofing is handled the same way. A 4" perforated pipe gets laid directly on the footer, and a leader is then run to daylight if there is slope, or a dry well if no slope.

I have a question I am in Florida and I have watter coming in my house whenever it rains hard. So I was thinking about coating the foundation like you did even though here in Florida we don't have basements and the Slap is not that deep. However I saw some adding plastic on top of the rubber, and many say you have to add a french drain along with gravel and discharge that watter with a pump which is a lot crazier work than this so do you think this is enough of should I add plastic sheet on the rubber or do I have to have a frech drain? please advise me.

A roller would be easier than the brush
@Dysturbed-00
@Dysturbed-00 4 года назад
True but a large brush is ideal for first coat on block if the joint finish is uneven as a brush will pack voids full and flush. The second and additional coats should be done with a roller once everything is smooth. Of course if your wall is perfectly smooth just start with the roller. WAY faster.
