Neil grew up in Winnipeg. A few years back the present owners saw a man outside looking at the house. The owner went out and spoke to the man who asked whether this was the house where Neil Young grew up. The owner confirmed that it was. The owner asked if he wanted to see his room which he did. The owner took him on a tour of the house and Neil’s room where he wrote a number of his songs. After the visitor left the owner’s wife asked her husband why he had brought this one in the house when others were turned down. Her husband said that was Bob Dylan. Definitely mutual respect between the two.

As Neil tells it, decades ago when he bought his ranch there was an old caretaker, and he wrote this song after meeting him for the first time. During that meeting the caretaker asked him. How does a young man like you come to afford a place like this? Neil’s reply was “just lucky I guess”.

You should have just gone ahead and done Heart of Gold from this same video solo concert. This song came from an old caretaker who he knew on a ranch. Neil is looking at this old man's life, and thinking of how his young self is similar (Old man look at my life, I'm a lot like you), but wondering what his future holds(24 and so much more). Its Neil wondering what his life will be like, and says just like this old man, he just wants "someone to love the whole day through". I think the message is pretty personal but not too complicated. Its one of Neil's most classic iconic solo acoustic songs. So is Heart of Gold, an even bigger song.

Young wrote this about the caretaker of the ranch he bought in 1970. The song compares a young man's life to an old man's and shows that the old man was once like this young man. The caretaker of the that cattle ranch? His name was Louis Avila. The ranch was the Broken Arrow Ranch, purchased for $350,000 in 1970. Reportedly, Avila was giving Young a tour of the place and asked him how a young man like him could afford a place like this. Young, aged 25, replied "Just lucky, Louie, just real lucky." Avila was quite bemused. Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor sang backing vocals on "Old Man" and another Harvest track, ""Heart of Gold." Source: Songfacts

Old Man was inspired by the Caretaker that came as part of a ranch Neil bought. He's the guy who lives there, cares for livestock, mends fences. It was Neil shifting from his life in Los Angeles to simpler and quieter things and the Caretaker's life sent him off on some whimsy.

This song holds special meaning to me. My last text I received from my Dad prior to him passing away, came on my birthday a few years back, wishing me a happy birthday and he would from time to time remind me that this song was his favorite. He had mentioned this in the text as well. I will always think of you, when I hear this, old man! Edit: You guys are right, there is a story behind this song, in Neil's words, but I like the fact that people can also interpret the song in their own words, first, before hearing the inspiration behind the lyrics.

There is another video of this performance where he talks about the song, why he wrote it and what it means. I can't help but feel that your patreon members should have directed you to that video. What you need to keep in mind about Neil Young is that he is first and foremost a folk singer with those folk singer sensibilities and approach to song writing and singing. The thing about folk singers is that they did not really on the vocal gymnastics that so many of you in the younger generations feel is so important. It is the message that matters. If this seems a little preachy, just know that it comes from an old folk singer, me, who started his journey in folk music in 1963. I very mush enjoy your channel. Keep enlarging your musical world.

I cut my teeth on this song in 72 when I was buying my first 8 tacts and listened to it a thousand times over the years and learning to play this on guitar so it's driven into my brainpan. Having said that it is only till now that I have really broken the code on it's meaning. The old man is a ranch hand that came along with Neil's new real estate purchase in Ontario who inspired this song about his loneliness of having all that, yet love lost...that makes him think of two...his life being all ahead of him...the old man's all behind him. A young (no pun) man's lament to an old wise weathered man, for female companionship to complete his life on that huge ranch that he had just bought. Genius songwriting and delivery by Mr. Young. Such a talent. Kudos Canada

An earlier version of this performance included the lead-in where he discusses who the song (the Old Man) is all about.

Did Neil Young make the saying "shut up and sing" popular? I hope Neil Young will remember....
