We found an ABANDONED Home Site While Exploring our Land! 

In this episode, Derek finds an abandoned Home Site and gets it running again with some sandpaper and a little fresh gas.

A fellers brother was really talkative today. Lol.

You should return with a metal detector around that old house foundation. People from that era, especially farmers, use to bury their money in cans and jars rather than trust it to a bank.

"I didn't have a plan..." I'm starting to see a family theme here. Chris must have had a Red Bull; I've never seen him so chatty.

That flat piece of silver metal you had, Eveready. That’s an old flashlight, looks like it was ran over and flattened.

A good friend of mine was from Souris, North Dakota. He once told me the North Dakota state bird was the mosquito, and the state tree was a telephone pole....

As a farm/ranch 'kid' with deep roots in the land, I am quite impressed that you and your brothers and cousins can meet together to make plans for the 'old home-place' without getting into an argument or a fistfight. Can we all just take a moment to drink in how beautiful this piece of land is? Man I'd love to have a place in an area like that but the winters...makes this Arkansas boy shiver just thinking about it. I've never been able to wrap my head around the science behind the rod method of finding a well. Seems like contacting the "other side" where some people have it and some don't, lol.

Every time he calls his brother Krang I think of the Ninja Turtles cartoon from the late 80’s. I hope that is the reference he is making.

With the land, family history, immediate family, siblings, and another generation coming up, you're a very rich man.

Looking at the house foundation... My grandparents house had a similar layout on hill. House at top, then directly below the house a retaining wall to keep the piers from washing out. Then a garden/yard, and another retaining wall below that about 25 feet. looked very similar. The rock pile may be the house, or just the rockpile. My grandfather also had a rockpile where he "stored" rocks they picked up around the place. Gotta put em somewhere!!! They don't burn! I saw other posts where people mentioned there should be a place where they were dumping stuff. I would wager in the bottom of that draw. Looks like the trees were planted on purpose as a wind break for the house. They are oddly... in a row. Are they to the west of the old house? If so, they likely are. Their dump pile would be within dragging distance of the house, not uphill, and downwind from your normal wind direction. Imagine how far and where you would drag a bin of garbage, and dig a hole for burnin' and look in that area with your metal detector. Might be near the rock storage area. It wasn't always the crick for dumping, especially if they did not want to spoil the lake water.

All those old farms had a dumping site. You should get a metal detector and see what ya find! Could be really cool!

You may want to invest in a metal detector to scan over the old homestead location to see if you find any keepers? People were known to bury their money and valuables in the old west in fear of marauders.

Truly beautiful. I know my 2 cents is a bit late, but the old "foundation" seems to be a perfect place to "rebuild" or "resurrect" a living dwelling especially since it seems to be "higher ground ". May be important if a guy and his family are only going to be there once in a blue moon 🌙.

Kind of sad that you had to open the video with a notice about trespassing. As for what was on the pad by the well, I am thinking a windmill for pumping water from the well would be likely.

Man that's an incredible view, and the history is cool too. To think a hundred years or so maybe more, there was a family living out there where the nearest town was probably a days horse ride away.

That old farmstead was most likely a family that didn’t make it though the Great Depression. Back then something like 1/3 of the population was in farming and ranching, now it’s less than %2

That draw there below the barn is natural drainage - you don't want to build there but I know you'll "do the right thing". LOL

More then ever I want to know more about the family history. Sounds like they have been in the area for a long time.

I think you're right about that draw, it's nice looking but you'd for sure have water/drainage/foundation issues in years where it's not dry as a bone.

Have you seen the crowbar, depth-witching technique? A friend and former co-worker who’s Dad had a plumbing business in that area showed it to me. It worked well for him but not so much for me. Two (both) forefingers under the neck of the crowbar, pick the end up a few inches off the ground and it will rotate. Count the 360 degree rotations for the water depth

I really admire your affection for the land. It’s cool how our roots, like those of the grass, are deep in the earth. I’m a Saskatchewan prairie dog lifer, sort of your neighbour to the North. Love the land.

The old Knorr place has a family cemetery too, just up the hill from those trees just west of where Chris graded that land.

In the old days when homesteaders came from Europe, the horse stable was often connected directly to one end of the house. This is similar to how homes today have attached garages. This can explain why the house footprint seems to be too large. You can identify the house usually by finding hearth stones. There should also be remnants of the chimney there, but if the house was bulldozed, evidence of the chimney is likely to be gone, although the hearthstones may remain if the rest of the foundation is there. Hearth stones may not be along the wall, but located inside the walls at the center of the house so that rooms on all sides could keep heated in the winter.

Drink a metric ton of Coors Light and you can find water anywhere. Or drink a few pints of Guinness and make your own! Blown away by the sheer amount of land your family owns Derek. Probably fit a whole Guinness brewery in there with room to spare! Great video, thank you.

Looks like a great piece of land. A person could retire to a place like that and love waking up to a view over that pond/lake every morning. The Eveready piece of metal was an old flashlight...no idea how old. Some metal detecting and poking around would probably lead to some interesting finds. Really liking this and looking forward to more videos of the progress as you make it into what you want. I'm thinking you need to grab and old boat now to take out on the water for some fishing.

I used that method to find underground water lines. Never to find water like that. I have never seen the washer trick to figure out depth. That's very cool.

The crushed, polished aluminum "EverReady" thing that Bentley found was a 1960s C or D Cell flashlight... They had a red plastic end where the lense was.

My wife’s family comes from Pierson,Manitoba which has similar topography.Her brother is a collector of old cars and machinery.

As far as how long ago that house was knocked down, I can see that it was most definitely inhabited in the 1940s/50s, that all the shiny part that said Everready, what is actually the casing to an old metal flashlight that was most likely from the 1950s, and that rusty metal plate that would’ve went on the front door I would say dates to the 1920s, it originally would’ve been brass plated steel. Like I don’t wanna vintage and antique items, so I thought I would chime in on this.

Don’t put your house at a low spot, or at the bottom of a hill. You’ll get too much water coming at you. That old foundation is in a very nice spot.

I've heard of water witching but never of the other trick with the washer. That was so cool. The old ways shouldn't be completely lost.

A guy should go through some of the town archives and see if a guy can find some old picture photos of the ol place and builder back like you do on those ol goin to town rides🏡

This video strongly reminds me of my childhood and my family house in Poland. Nostalgia and memories are just firing in guy's head. Sadly everything got lost due to financial crisis. I wish I could come back to those good times. Keep up the great work Derek!

I use to live in Fargo.......this is the prettiest place I've ever seen!!!!! Keep the rocks and plant trees!. (Could you bulldoze Fargo while you're at it?)

Those sulphate rich waters are good for a clean out when needed.

Seeing that home site reminds me of reading the abstracts for my own property here in this state they tell the story of how hardscrabble life was for the settlers. Borrowing money to buy a milk cow that ended up dying was enough to loose your property.

at Timestamp of 12:56 thats an old Eveready flashlight that has lost the head and the battery end is ripped cleanoff the tube... We had those on our ranch..... The slider switch is still partially there... Its from the early to mid 70's

Hey Derek . . . Cool place . . . about the copper wires, I use that method often to locate water, underground power lines and strangely enough, bodies. I am a United Methodist pastor, and years ago, we were building a new church building near the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Folks from all over the U.S. came to help build the building. One guy was a funeral director; he taught me how to locate things with the copper wires. On the seven acres of land for the new building, we found an old cemetery, believed to be from the late 1800's, early 1900's. We wanted to protect that sacred ground. An old fence had fallen down. To memorialize the family, we needed to locate the graves. This funeral director took the copper wires and said, "Here's a grave and here's another." He went on to say that as a body decomposes, it leave traces of minerals in the ground. Interesting to say the least. We got some markers and we built a new fence to include everyone........

When my grandfather drilled the well for his house, he hit an underground spring. It was so strong that they didn't even need a water pump for 20 years. Then it was week so he installed a small pump. About 50 years later, the well was running a little dry so my dad and I set out to find the original well pipe and point. We had no idea, and we doused it, aka divined it, and marked the spot. Starting our diggin strait down, and Bob's your uncle we were right on top of the well cap! Still something science has zero explanation for.

I believe the wire thing works! I found the spot for our new well years ago with that method.

Suggest metal detecting the old house site. Guarantee you’ll dig up relics, old tools, coinage, household relics. It will give you a view into your past.

12:55 That's an old flashlight, I used to have one similar to that, and I think I got it from my dad. Yours is all flatten out though, not sure if adding a new bulb and some fresh batteries is going to help.

Amazing seeing the amount of history in that little piece of land just from keeping it in the family and passing it down. My family were farmers for 150 years but never on the same land as 3 times that I know of they sold the farm for building land and then moved a bit further out as the city expanded. My Uncle sold up just a couple years back and they're building a whole bunch of 'luxury family housing' on that little piece of land and he was the last to sell up so I guess I'm not from a farming family any more. I learned to drive stick on my Uncle's back field and spent a ton of summers working on the property when my Dad rented some land off my uncle to run his business out of but the whole lot's gone now save a couple of glasshouses that look to still be standing on the old Google maps.

My 14 year old son Jacob Riley Haataja passed away in March. I'm always at home. It's tough to work on my own projects now. I'd love to get away occasionally to distract myself with adventures with old iron

Derek hi. You are so lucky to have that homestead property in ND. Here in NJ that would have been bought up by greedy developers and turned into townhouses or strip malls.I plan on getting out and getting a piece of land at some point soon.Good luck with your new un -car project!
