Willie, Sarah and their dog, Jack Spaniels, continue their biggest adventure yet - leaving their suburban life and moving over the sea to 'Live The Skye Life'!
In this episode, the 'Skye Lifers' take you with them on a day trip to Inverness - the capital of the Scottish Highlands.
Plus, we search for an abandoned village hidden in a glen close to our cottage with Iain from ‪@scotlandonashoestring‬ and continue to work on our byre conversion.
Keep an eye out for our best Aurora Borealis sighting yet! We got an amazing display, right from our garden.

I moved up to Scotland from near Liverpool four years ago and I've never looked back. I always say that yes, I was born English. But I choose to be Scottish. I'll be getting the keys to my forever home in Tomintoul tomorrow and I can't wait! I love watching your videos. You're both such lovely folk and your love for Skye (and each other) is blatantly obvious. Oh, and Jack Spaniels is the true star of the channel. Like you didn't already know! 😂

I’m so glad you explained why people were forced to abandon their homes and leave Scotland. I had my DNA done and I am ~40% Scottish. I often wondered why my ancestors left to come to the US and only knew a little of the history. It’s really interesting. Love your channel! 💜

Wish more American knew this. The lairds who broke the social contract with their poor relatives from the clan and forced them off their ancestor lands built massive mansions off the money they made from the wool boom grown on the land now cleared of people. With the decline in income coming into the large Scottish estates from the 1930s onwards till today suddenly the aristocratic descendants (who more often than not, have upper class English accents due to being sent to upperclass English schools) started to appeal to the overseas descendants of the people forced off during the clearances for donations. They get little to no support from ordinary Scots who are taught the detailed history. Many overseas descendants, unfortunately, don't know much if anything about the clearances and don't realise that the money they donate is often used to prop up the lifestyles created off the backs of their ancestors suffering. I've visited some sites round Scotland that I have family connections to (I'm from New Zealand which had a high degree of Scottish immigration) and was approached to donate to the "clan fund" to maintain the "family seat" and told the toff with his hand out I knew about the details of how my ancestors were kicked of the land by his forebears. They turned round and stalked off pretty quick after that.

Hi Sarah. A Geordie lady here. Although in my late 60s I STILL love a good bargain. You made me giggle. I've lived in Canada for many years and my treat is from Wendy's. A fast food chain like McDonald's. You might know that poutine is a national dish. With a burger, and fries which have a lovely gravy on top with cheese curds . Delicious. Because of meds I can't have deep fried foods.so they make a baked potato with those toppings. Surprisingly good.by the time I get home the curds have melted into the gravy. A treat indeed. Blessings to you. Ps I enjoyed the field trips. I'm adding that those lights are magical and other worldly still for me. I can't imagine the feelings of people's gone by.

Definitely brought tears to my eyes seeing that abandoned village. Such a stunning place to live, even if a hard life back then, but completely destroyed by greed, corruption and politics. People thrived there for centuries (I wonder where the burial ground is). The people who were forced out must have been heartbroken. Beautiful photography, and the Merry Dancers--WOW. Thanks for your fantastic vids.

Hi from Nova Scotia(New Scotland), Canada. In 1773 a significant number of Scottish immigrants arrived in Nova Scotia on the ship Hector & established the town of Pictou. Nova Scotia has deep connections to Scotland with many Scottish descendants from the displaced Clans. Greatly enjoy your channels & especially the beauty of Skye & the Highlands. Would love to visit Scotland someday & explore my Scottish heritage but in the meantime I will vicariously visit via your channel. Thanks for sharing.🇨🇦

I live in South Africa and many of us are still proud of our Scottish heritage. We have pipe bands and highland dancing competitions. My mother's name is Heather 💜Your explanation of the highland clearances has helped me to understand why it has been so important to maintain these traditions. Thanks 💞
@user-uy6uc5ey5q
@user-uy6uc5ey5q Год назад
Post Culloden (the 1745 revolt was as much a Scottish civil war between the Highlands and Lowlands as a Scottish vs English conflict) there was systematic suppression of the Highland Gaelic speaking (and predominately Catholic) people, traditions and culture. The Clearances were a late stage extension of this effort to a degree though there were some limited clearances in the south. This even extended to people losing their names. The surnames Black, Grey and White only become common in Scotland from the mid-18th century onwards as an example. Things you think are iconicallyHighland or Scottish like the kilt and especially various clan tartans are largely 19th century inventions. Prior the mid 18th century, Highlanders from the same region would have worn the same tartan pattern regardless of the clan they belonged to as the weavers in the area would have used that one pattern and it was 1 size fits all for the large cloak cloth that was the kilt design highlanders used. Not the tight fitted 'skirt" that arose latter. Another sign is that little to no pre 1745 Highland bagpipe tunes or Gaelic used in modern Pipe bands repertoire despite the instrument having been used for centuries prior to highland/Gaelic suppression. In fact its likely the pipes themselves only continue as fairly common instruments due to their use by Highland soldiers forced to join British military units in order to survive. What you think are "traditional" often are 19th century Protestant, non gaelic, lowland Scot inventions or reinterpretation of Highland Scottish culture. That you think this links back to actual 'Highland tradition' means the suppression and propaganda are still working.

I enjoy watching your videos. My 4th Great Grandparents were from Skye and Appin. They were married in Skye and probably were in the Highland Clearances since it fits the timeline. They wound up in America in the Carolinas. I have more Scottish ancestors, but these two so far have been the easiest to find out about. I would love to come to Scotland one day. But if I don't get the chance, your videos are the next best thing to see what my great grandparents might have seen and where they walked. Thanks for the interesting videos with the historical information. I love your cottage too!

I live in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. A lot of families here, my wife's included, were people from the clearances. Many Scots landed between here and Antigonish and Pictou, with many residents today still tracing their roots back to those early unintentional immigrants. Common names around here are MacNeil, MacPhee, MacDonald, MacLeod, MacMaster, MacIsaac, Rankin and so on. Some may be from that village or others like it. My mom's side hails from Scotland, too. They were Robertsons from further inland. Thank you for taking such an interest in the history and culture of our ancestral homeland. Should you ever find yourselves in Cape Breton, be sure to come say hello!

Hi Willie & Sarah, love your video's, & the life style. Jack is a wonderfull companion. I'm a 3rd Gen Scot born Aussie. Both sets of grandparents immigrated from Scotland to Australia. My Laird's originally were driven down from the highlands of Caithness & Inverness & my children who are McLeods are from the Isle of Skye. Enjoyed hearing the stories of the old ruins & Willie's tunes sentimentally brings out my origins. True Fact: when the early McLeod's arrived in Victoria they bought the rocky higher ground to farm. What they didn't realise was the soil on the flat land was richer & grew better crops. We all know why they went for the high land.

This video (and all your stuff) is really good. Just remember, if everyone always rushes off to the big-town supermarkets, or gets “deliveries” of their shopping, the Co-op will be forced to close and you’ll lose the convenience it provides. Convenience has its own value.. Those logs could easily have been split with a “log-grenade” and a sledge hammer, club-hammer, or back of your axe. Willie, do you wear chainsaw trousers when using that saw? Chainsaw wounds are savage, and don’t heal quickly, but (even for experienced operators) are easily gained if protective gear is not used. Take care of yourself, you guys, we want plenty more videos! Les

I had a penpal in Inverness and I’ve never seen what it looked like so I enjoyed the little tour, even though there are lots of brand new stuff there. I did see the old stuff too. Thank you. Have a wonderful day. ❤

The ruins history is heartbreaking. The Northern Lights were spectacular. Jack may prefer puddle water as it may be warmer and easier on his overheated stomach.

I subscribed to Scotland on a Shoestring back when you guys featured them last time, when he came to hook up your satellite dish. And they have not disappointed. As an avid fan of sarcasm, I think Ian has an amazing sense of humor!

I haven’t been to Inverness since 1995, so interested to see the new developments. You have to be careful in Mountain Warehouse. They are expensive unless you get the ‘sale’ prices. Really interesting walk over to the abandoned settlement. How amazing to see the eagles.

Nice to see you gave yourselves a small break in Inverness. However you let yourselves down by giving in to the scourge of the 21st century. McDonalds burgers, and doughnuts. However you jaded up for it with your walk to the old village, which was very interesting. Again like your back ground music Willy. Let’s see more of your art Sarah. Stay safe

From other channels that are restoring stone buildings one thing come through strongly - do not use cement mortar on the walls, the mortar is stronger than the stones and can crack them with temperature changes also the mortar does not allow the stone to breathe (from the moisture coming up from the ground - no damp proof layer). A lime mortar is what has been used by others.

It would be fun to metal detect around the ruins if the property owner would give you permission. I'm really enjoying your adventures. Seeing Inverness and Portree through your eyes is nice. I visited those places between 2016 and 2018. I've been missing Scotland so much! From Virginia, USA. Our Highland games and Festival are this weekend (2 & 3 Sept) at a place called Great Meadows in The Plains, VA. Only 15 min from my house! Lots of fun. The area reminds me of Scotland 😊
