We Found Dinosaur-Aged Lignitized Wood With Calcite Crystals! - Fossil Hunting in Georgia

In this video we went on the hunt for dinosaur aged fossils! We didn't find any dino bones, but what we found was just as impressive. We ended up finding lignitized wood with calcite crystals growing in it! This wood is on it's way to becoming coal, and was preserved in marine sediments. It was definitely an amazing surprise to say the least! Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed the adventure!

Where I'm at there is a lot of lignitized wood and pine cones, the best way we've found to preserve it is to use a vacuum chamber to fill the wood with carbo wax before it dries. Unfortunately this is expensive and the only place I know can do it is archeology labs. Alternatively I have found paleobond hardener works okay when the wood is dry. I have also been told that the wood can be kept in undenatured alcohol, but that is also expensive.

I'd imagined mod podge or resin would be the way to go preserving wise. People use resin to make jewelry out of real food, it's pretty cool but I don't know if that stuff would mess with its natural look.

Man, that's super cool Kyle ! Myself, I kept thinkin' take big ass pieces, cut the pieces nicely for various uses. I see at the end how it got quite fragile when dryin' out. I'd look into suckin' the moisture out an stabilizing it beforehand if possible. (wood knife scales/grips are often soaked in a chemical to stabilized it to harden it.) Cool treasure hunt just the same. An for the record, very, few sasquatch sightings/reports ever report them actually hurting people. 👊

Most types of lignite do get calcite call reason and a few different type of pyrites deposits in it and when it's not a stable type It's just going to turn into Dust on you given enough time but it will be pretty till then I carve a type of black stable lignite and it's pretty cool what you can find in it and a good one to stabilize it is boiled linseed oil depending on how unstable it is

Excellent video, why does the calcification occur the way it does and not grow from 1 spot out like fungus?
@WILDKYLE
@WILDKYLE 4 года назад
Calcite grows in voids or cracks in something, so it usually grows into points when minerals leech into the void through water dripping in slowly over time.
@NeroVSsnk
@NeroVSsnk 4 года назад
@@WILDKYLE so interesting glad the journey was worth it (thanks to good research) So as it grows in the void does it start to separate the wood further? I should probably just look into geology right 😆
