There’s a better way to prevent fuel from spilling when changing the frame mounted filter by performing the following: 1) Open the drain on the fuel water separator 2) Change the fuel filter in the engine bay. 3) Then change the frame mounted fuel filter. Changing the engine mounted fuel filter while draining the fuel water separator provides a vent path to allow the frame mounted fuel filter to completely drain.

Good call, I’ll try that next time. I did the frame mount entirely at first, but drained the water separator for a while, then slowly loosened the filter and periodically let it dump before dropping it all the way. Wasn’t too messy.

Just replaced my filters. Good instructions. Only thing I would say is to use long breaker bar. I started to round off the filter with shorter wrench. Undo the filter slowly last couple of threads let it drain. About 1/4 of small trash bin will drain out. On the new filter use the diesel to lubricate the O ring and also the threads. It will screw in easier paying attention not to round off the filter.

Speaking from experience.- i you wait for the fuel filter housing to drain all way, the housing bowl will be empty when you remove it.

♤ It seems to drain better if you have the engine bay fuel filter off when opening the petcock valve on the side of the old water separator filter.

Thanks for the video. You showed the fuel filter canister in the beginning of the video. What is the part number for the canister assembly?

Seems like the o-ring and threads weren’t lubricated originally from the manufacturer, first time the filter is being changed and it won’t budge after about a half turn. It’s now rounded off so a socket won’t work, put a screw driver in the hole where the bleed off valve goes and got it to turn a bit but won’t budge anymore. Any suggestions?

What do you lubricate the O-ring with? Also, have you ever rounded the nut on that filter?

Does it matter what fuel level the gas tank is at when performing this work or is the fuel dump entirely just from what is in the line and filter system? Also, since there will be diesel fuel dumping on both ends, what would you recommend to use to "hose" these dumped fuel in both the frame and engine compartment? Dunno, just wigged out about fire hazard lol. Great video otherwise.

It’s a messy job for sure, but fuel level wont have anything to do with it. You really just try to be fast and keep the fuel contained.
