We debated on completely tearing down the 426 in Andy's 67 GTX, until we decided to go with a fresh set of valve springs. Oh boy, it's a good thing we did! The pile of issues we discovered when we cracked the heads off means this engine is going to require a thorough going through...with a good possibility that list gets longer the deeper we go.

no kidding...a 426 Hemi is like a Boss 429--many internal race parts, few of their wedge descendants have. Big boy bank account material. This is the reason why so many fooled around with wedges.

on a high demand, big ticket consumer item...expect there to be some cheatin' involved. We still use the expression "truth from the horse's mouth" because before cars, folks dyed the hair on their horses to get them to look young and sell for more. You had to look at the teeth and gums to spot an old hag ready for the glue factory. Seller mentality has not changed. Caveat emptor--and budget accordingly.
@fastinradfordable
@fastinradfordable 3 года назад
Me n my old boss both swapped high mileage Tdis into older vw. His was bored over. And ultimately burned oil and required 2nd bore over. So the block is basically done. I honed and refreshed my reused internals and I’m still been driving it. Many thousands of miles. Daily. His was a restored mint vehicle and only gets occasionally mileage. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. But if you never try to do it on the cheap (uncle tony style). You never stand a chance of saving money. But be my guest to just throw it away for peace of mind. Not saying the car doesn’t deserve a nice motor. Just sayin. Logic is one thing. How it plays out is another.
@albertgaspar627
@albertgaspar627 3 года назад
@@fastinradfordable respectfully....checking out an engine before blowing it up IS cheap. Its cheaper than laying waste to expensive parts that can be saved if remachined/reassembled the proper way. One of the magazines UT worked at, tested a yellow Boss 351 Mustang after they went up in value, and found a piece of cardboard used as a gasket on the autolite carb. There is a long history of folks flipping cheap--in fact UT has a few videos on what he's seen. so its not paranoid to suspect a Hemi, the king of flips. there is cheap, and there is "penny wise, pound foolish". just sayin'. I've seen cars advertised for "too good to pass up" prices, until i investigated...and found enough wrong to realize it was a complete build and I already had 5 at home. sometimes we focus on today's price and ignore the long term--like the $200 rust bucket that will one day cost more than the $2,000 solid southern dry climate car. that's the cheap that really isn't. just sayin'.

@@tonybarracuda3505 The Typical rebuilt engines for sale around here are basically emery cloth used on the crank and rod journals, new bearings, and rings right out of the box and slapped on. Back in the early '70's I looked at a '68 440 Road Runner that was for sale. A friend was with me and we had it fired up and idling. I was sitting in the car and depressed the clutch. My friends eyes went wide and he told me to come look at this. We swapped places and when he depressed the clutch, the crank move forward almost .100! Let off, it'd go back. The guy said he'd just spent $2K getting the motor rebuilt. I showed him that the thrust bearing was shot and the engine needs to be torn down to check everything. He was trying to sell the car for $3500.....I offered him $800.... He wasn't happy...

depends on the can, too. A Hemi, a Boss 429--these ain't engines you run thru the local remanufacturer and then spray with nitrous. A lot of race parts, a lot of tolerances, a lot of parts they don't see on Chevy 305 targetmasters very often and don't have the tools to measure.

From what's happened to me, with any engine now before install I knock out the welch plugs and clean the cooling passages thoroughly! I have a 245 Hemi six in an 1970 VG Valiant Ute that had sat for decades. Got it to fire up easily enough, but after a few minutes one of the original steel plugs was weeping. Glad I pulled the engine out to do all of them, because at the back of the block it was full of red dirt and rust! An entire day with the engine on a crane and using a power washer I managed to clear everything out and then put in nice new brass plugs. So happy I caught that before I started using the Ute, now it sits just below halfway on the temperature gauge and runs beautifully!

Yup. Many moons ago ('70s) all the guys expressed to me how careful they'd have been while lugging Hemi heads around - but they're the easiest of them all to handle if you ask me. The casting on the intake side for the rocker cover flange provides a perfect grab handle. Easy peasy.

Ha yeah I took my '64 heads to my engine builder for inspection, dropped one of the heads on my foot. Pretty much broke my toe but luckily ok enough to live with. It's why I wanted to run '65 aluminum heads but the ones I have are a total mess and need quite a bit of work. Turns out one of the '64 heads has a water jacket leak I have to fix. And so the engine builder wants to use the nice '69 heads I have. That's a bit disappointing to use on a '64 block but they are about 10lb lighter per head than the '64 heads that had more nickel content. Hemi's are complete misery but the day I get one running will be worth it.

He just brought in a 1948 Ford coupe, with a 351 Cleveland/C4 combo. Typical weekend warrior custom stuff was done. Engine was "fresh built", but car it came from was wrecked. The seller slapped it in with no choke, and nonfunctional secondaries, and terribly tuned. After a good warmup running rich, it has great throttle from 1/3-1/2 pedal. Any more than that and it's like hitting a brick wall. I suspect other issues as well.

If the clearances are big then too much oil will get down the guides into the combustion chamber . Also the factory did use those thick washers on the head bolts . Nice project !

Sorta bittersweet, a bit dissapointing but you'll have some great content and a hot hemi by the end of this!

You should measure the bolts and studs. I would be curious if they are stretched out.
@enduser6982
@enduser6982 3 года назад
bolts are garbage for so much machining was done was the washers poor cheap idea on builder and still failed sealing head to block. not only that, they bottomed out giving false torque reading of head seal pressure as UT pointed the carbon between cylinders, also leakage would mess with cooling engine performance. glad owner opted the right decision. proof not re-use bolts, torque to yield is gone

@@enduser6982 I don't think so. My thoughts is that this was just thrown back together with a bunch of used parts. If there had been a bunch of machining done the decks wouldn't look like a soap dish and the alignment pin holes for the rockers would not be wallowered out.
@enduser6982
@enduser6982 3 года назад
@@patrickradcliffe3837 wallowered out is they ran loose, correct engine was tossed together with stretched bolts. in video of engine running, the valvetrain can hear that from UT's old garage.

Yah, things happen. I bought rocker cover gaskets for my 318-3 since the originals are leaking. Now it appears everything I touch or see needs something looked at while I'm in there. Might as well do it right while I'm tearing things apart but what should have been a 30 minute job has escalated, haha.

That's sucks! But you'll know the condition of the engine now! I like how Tony can honestly talk about the pros and cons of the elephant! He's a true Dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth enthusiasts. If I ever need to know Mopar knowledge I'm coming here

It's sad it had to come to taking out the engine and starting over but it's really for the best. That way you're not guessing, you know whats there. I was one of those who said with as much as you found wrong it really brought to question everything inside the motor.

Melling still catalogs the 1966 / 1967 Street Hemi camshaft, which is different from the 68-69 camshaft that Mopar Performance sells. The 1966 and 1967 Street Hemi engines had the Race Hemi dual valve springs and no valve stem oil seals.

Good thing you guys opened that thing up, if there were cylinders sharing fire it would have eventually ruined the block (I’ve seen it happen to a Ford 460)
