We Got Liquid Springs On Our Super C RV! (Worth It? & Factory Tour)

In this episode of Wandering Wagners, we took our Nexus Wraith 34W Super C RV to Lafayette, Indiana to Liquid Spring to get our rear suspension re-done with a complete new system!
Liquid Spring is a Smart Suspension that monitors and adjusts liquid in tanks to adjust and account for bumps in the roads, and body tilt of your coach.
The systems runs around $12k depending on your coach.
People who have installed Liquid Spring on their rigs do nothing but rant and rave about how amazing it is, so we wanted to see if it was really worth all that money!
Liquid Spring does almost 100% of the manufacturing and testing of their system in house! That was probably one of the most surprising parts (in a good way!) Lots of great skilled workers, and super smart engineers!
I've been in manufacturing my entire career and this plant was so clean! They really take pride, and it shows with the excellent craftsmanship.
Mike dropped off the Wraith on Monday morning and they called Tuesday to say it was finished and ready to get picked up! We arrived Wednesday morning to get a factory tour and pick up the Super C.
We did a test drive with Eric, and he showed us not only how to operate the system, but how the system itself operates!
Next we put it to the test by heading 300+ miles away towards Iowa. The roads in Indiana and around Chicago are known to be terrible- so the Wraith got a lot of testing miles in this trip!
We were pleasantly surprised at how well the Super C rode! We even removed the cardboard from under our fridge that helps hold up the heavy wood facing, which normally falls under non-bumpy roads. I was skeptical that we wouldn't need the cardboard anymore. After the rest of the 4 hour drive the fridge facing was STILL in place! That in itself is a win haha
Unlike Springs or air ride, Liquid Spring is a SMART suspension that learns, vs a static thing that can only do so much while hitting bumps.
We plan to update as we travel along the next few months with how the system is operating and if we STILL think it's worth it... or not!
As of now, we both think it is!

Glad you like it. I agree. It's a game changer. We enjoy the front and rear we put on our class a. Sport mode really helps in gusting cross winds. We use normal typically. Sport in wind and comfort on smooth roads.

@keepaeyeonit2709
@keepaeyeonit2709 2 года назад
Defiantly a worthwhile upgrade from watching your past videos, we had the same problem with our Dometic refrigerator dropping its wood panel so I glued the plastic retainer to the door, problem solved. For a motorhome the smother the ride the better so Liquid Springs would be the ticket but I'm thinking a heavy dump truck then leaf springs would probably be more feasible.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners 2 года назад
Originally we were looking to remove the fridge panels but couldn't find a face we liked at the time so we just rolled with the cardboard lol it did a great job but it's crazy that we don't need it anymore! I honestly didn't think it wouldn't fall even after liquid Spring. I was happy to be proven wrong!
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 2 года назад
Very few heavy-duty trucks (including dump trucks) still use leaf springs. Some types used rubber (mostly concrete mixers and crane carriers), but now almost all of them use air springs. Liquid Spring is too complex and expensive for most commercial use, and the ride isn't important enough in those truck to justify it.

The softness of an air ride suspension depends on the volume of air. Just as Liquid Spring changes the connected volume of fluid to change stiffness (for the various ride modes and cornering response), an air spring system can have any desired air volume (in the spring and attached). Many commercial truck air suspensions are not soft at all, but that's not a fundamental limitation of air springs.

Thanks for the information, I would like to have it on the front of my Seneca with the air I have on the rear. But maybe changing out the air is the way to go. I think I need to talk to Liquid Spring and get their opinion. They may not have it available for the front of the Seneca either.

Yeah you'd have to ask them if it's available for your chassis, but they are working and developing everyday so if they don't today they probably will in the future! We are crossing our fingers for the front of our coach as well. We'd definitely change out the air for liquid Spring but that's totally your decision. Their factory was really impressive though!

It's smart, and therein lies my concern with Liquid Springs. I was looking at a Wraith with Liquid Springs when I was shopping and my main concern with them was serviceability. I called the company and was told that if the control unit went out it was about 2 days to get you a new one, overnight if they didn't have to program a unit for you. Not bad, but still it's 2 days. My other question, which I don't remember if I asked was the hydraulic portion of the system. Cylinders will leak at some point and how quickly can they get you new ones? I don't know but I imagine I would had gotten the same 2 day answer. Glad you guys like it but I think I'm going to stick with the air ride on my Ghost for now. Keep the good stuff coming guys.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners 2 года назад
that's the risk you take with electronics, ect. If the Def sensor goes out on your ghost you'll need a tow and the sensors are on national back order. Luckily, liquid spring has a great track record and they have the parts available if need be. Don't forget that air systems can leak and fail too😉 There's a risk with any vehicle to have something break... At least we will now have a much more enjoyable ride while on the road vs what we had before!😁

@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 2 года назад
The stock suspension on that rig must have been brutal. I have the same refrigerator with a similar heavy panel in a Class A on a Ford F53 chassis, and while the ride is harsh we have had no issues with the refrigerator panel. I wouldn't be surprised if some of these Class C motorhomes on heavy-duty chassis are too stiff due to excessive GAWR, but a Wraith is only a Class 6 (like my F53), so it shouldn't be that bad.

@catdaddy3728
@catdaddy3728 2 года назад
Glad you guys are happy with the upgrade! Since this is a comment section... I don't see how ANY rv manufacturer would build a motorhome on a spring suspension chassis... I mean come on. Not for nothing but the Wraith was nothing more than a camper school bus. Hey we heard what it sounded like. We have travel trailers, but the trailers have the Dexter torsion rubber axles which ride so smooth, as if it was air ride... actually better cause there is nothing to it but the self contained rubber axle. If we were going motorhome, I would never consider anything that did not have air ride. For a few reasons, air on board for the suspension, air brakes, simple excellent braking and the added benefit of spring brakes for parking safety. You can have air seats, air for anything you use an air hose for. Air can be serviced at any truck related shop. Air suspension matched with the correct shocks will allow for a smooth comfortable ride... higher cost up front for the air equipped chassis but it is gonna be a keeper, and resale will be higher too. The Liquid Springs I have no doubt ride great and are a great design, but holy cow there is so much goin on with the electric over hydraulic components... I would be nervous. Too much to go wrong if it ever did... BUT, that is only my opinion... good luck with your rig. You will probably not have issues, now gotta get that steer axle sofened up!! Stay safe y'all.

@@WanderingWagners Thanks for the info. I just checked out Liquid Springs for my 2023 Thor Quantum E450 motorhome. Looks like a real winner if your budget can cover the costs. They told me it would be around $21,000 for my coach - which would bust my budget. So I went the conventional route and just upgraded the stock suspension. I got Koni FSD shocks, Sumo springs, Hellwig sway bars and a Roadmaster reflex steering stabilizer. It set me back $2,700 in parts and Ford charged me $1,100 to install, which came with an alignment. The improvement was not as dramatic as Liquid Springs but made my coach ride significantly better. It cut down on the rock-n-roll sway and the new shocks soak up the bumps much better than the Ford stock shock. Also the steering is tighter and tracks down the road better than before. So I'm quite happy with my upgrades and only wish I had the dough to pony up for Liquid Springs.

We're looking at possibly buying a used (2018-2020) Ghost and correct me if I'm wrong, Mike, they all come with air ride from the factory so I can't imagine LS making that much of a difference. Not as much as you experienced going from standard shocks and springs to LS, I mean. What do you think?
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners Год назад
There are quite a few people switching from air ride to liquid spring. Air is better than spring. But nothing can beat liquid spring. The fact that the Wraith has hydraulic brakes was another selling point for me. That's just my preference though.
@OldManandtheSuperC
@OldManandtheSuperC 2 года назад
One of the big differences between the Wraith and the Ghost is the rear suspension. Is the extra cost worth it just to get air suspension? I don’t believe I need the extra tow capacity and the extra 60 HP?thoughts?
@WanderingWagners

We would actually recommend you get the triumph or Wraith and get liquid spring installed over the air suspension of the ghost. Even after liquid spring it'll still be cheaper than the Ghost, especially with a Triumph

Yes, the height change will be on all axles which are equipped with the system. In demos of LiquidSpring on a chassis-cab truck, the height is changed on one axle at a time - apparently the control package can't do both axles at the same time - which I think would be bad while moving, but just takes extra time when stopped.

🤷🏼‍♀️ we are able to get under ours with the creeper in the garage without issues so doesn't pertain to us. I don't think it would lower any more than the "low" feature which is still far off the ground.
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 2 года назад
@@WanderingWagners You should assume that it could go down to the bump stops, which will be well below the "low" ride height. To minimize the chance of an issue, ensure that the system is turned off and there is no power for it (just the key switch if it is wired so it can't run without the key on). The best approach is to use the system to raise the vehicle if desired, turn off the system, and put jack stands under each frame rail behind the rear axle.

Liquid spring is essentially maintenance free, unlike air. Ok, We currently have a 24ft RB, Dynamax REV. (2017). We are looking to upgrade to something a bit larger with a dedicated bed area. I want to be able to tow a vehicle without any issues, ie: hills or steep grades. Your Wraith is 300hp and you tow a jeep. My REV is 280hp but limited to a towing capacity of 2000 lbs. Is the difference in the transmissions? I bought a 2016 Smart car to tow but don't think my RV will handle it in hilly terrain.. It may seem like a dum question but we have only been RV'ing for 8 months and I've been wondering about this for a while. Second question, initially 24ft to me was large. Your Wraith is I think 34ft, would the transition from driving a 24ft to 34ft be a big deal in your opinion? I'm a retired airline pilot and am ok in the air but don't have a lot of over the road experience with these RVs. I enjoyed your video on "Would I buy it Again, and the liquid Spring upgrade.
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners 2 года назад
There's a lot that's factored into tow ratings like chassis, brakes, engine, and transmission. The chassis will have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and a combined vehicle weight rating (RV and trailer) if you have a lighter weight chassis then you'll have a lower weight rating, the more your RV weighs, the less you can tow. Super C's usually have a very respectful tow rating because they are built on commercial truck chassis. You'd be surprised how easy this wraith handles being 34 feet. There would be an adjustment period for you, but it would be short. It has A very good wheel cut for it's size.

You mention the beneficial ride effect of loading your stuff into the unit @19:10 - what are your operating axle weights, or at least the total weight? The stock suspension may still have been underloaded, causing poor ride. @21:30 you mention "eighteen five springs", and based on other comments means that you changed out the original 15,500 pound rated leaf springs for a set rated for a rear GAWR (or GVWR?) of 18,500 pounds; is this true, and why did you increase spring stiffness?
@WanderingWagners
@WanderingWagners 2 года назад
We weighed on a cat scale and the drive axle was at 14,580 lbs. The reason why we upgraded springs was because we were riding on the bump stops, and not just by a little bit. The 18,500 springs gave us enough lift to raise the back end up enough to be off the bump stops which in turn gave us a much better ride quality.
@brianb-p6586
@brianb-p6586 2 года назад
@@WanderingWagners Thanks for the response. With static load less than the rated capacity of the springs the axle shouldn't be even close to touching the bump stops, and that would certainly make ride terrible. Perhaps they are not really bump stops, which are rubber blocks between the axle housing and the frame; those should only touch as a last resort to keep the axle from hitting the frame. There are add-on products (from companies such as Timbren) which are polyurethane springs mounted in the bump stop location; those are much longer and are intended to contact and assist the springs well before a bump stop would hit. I'm wondering if you're actually talking about the secondary leaf (or leaves) rather than bump stops, but I'm not sure if your International had a primary and secondary leaf system - the LiquidSpring installation manual for the International 4300/4400/MV607 doesn't show them. The secondary leaf pack is also called the second stage, or overload leaves. Those secondary leaves are attached to the axle and main pack at the middle but the ends are free until enough compression brings the ends into contact with brackets on the frame midway between the axle and the main pack spring hangers (in the case of secondary leaves on top of the primary pack) or into contact with the main pack (in the case of secondary leaves under the primary pack). An unloaded truck rides with the secondary leaves out of contact so they're not active (so it's softer), then those extra leaves become active (start working because the ends hit) near full load. An RV is always nearly fully loaded (because the coach body is the load), so this two-stage behaviour doesn't make as much sense as it does in a typical truck. I'm thinking that you may have gone from sitting on the 15,500 pound spring sets with the secondary packs engaged all of the time to sitting on the 18,500 pound springs sets with only the primary leaf packs engaged so it was actually softer at your load... but without seeing your leaf setup, that's only a guess.

Check out our other videos talking about this system. Liquid spring has been around for 20 years and it is almost maintenance free, unlike an air system.
