I’ve done this level of fabrication just once in my life. So I can honestly say that just by watching the video that it in no way conveys the amount of time, labor, and love invested. Getting dressed in the morning? Testing out solutions in your head. Eating breakfast? Compiling a materials list. Gathering materials in the shop? Constantly walking back and forth measuring and fitting. Gathering tools? Mentally making sure you have the correct solution. Setting up the cameras? Determining what the next high priority problem in need of a solution is. You pick up your first tool to begin the project you’ve been working at five hours already. However Ed knows, and yeah it will bring a tear to his eye. Just like it will bring a tear to ours. Thank you.

8:29 "Oil Filter is not going to be user friendly, but there is enough room to change it." I would suggest just putting on an oil-filter relocation kit, and mounting the oil filter where ever you want. Ed would appreciate an easy oil change. Besides that, it makes all things header easier too by getting the oil filter out of your way.
@PetesNikon

That alternator cut-out in the frame is pure genius! I can see the need for the extra clearance, but it never would have occurred to me to flip that piece over and weld it back in. Ed is not likely to hammer this thing hard enough to twist the frame, but this attention to detail on something few people will ever see or notice speaks volumes about how you are committed to doing the best work possible. Well done!

That kid is so smart! He knows there’s way more fun and useful stuff to be learned with dad in his shop than what they could ever teach at school. When they start learning your trade this early, you just know he’s all set up for the future and will always have work. When what you’re doing is more fun than anything else in the world. That’s every dad’s dream right there. You must be so proud. Nowadays schools are a bad influence on most kids anyway so don’t pressure him in going to get indoctrinated. Can’t change em after they reach about 15. Those will be the days to remember. Skipping school to work with dad in the shop. In the other video he was naming car parts I don’t know the name of as an adult. Save the little genius from being spoiled at school! Blessings to you and your family. 🙏

So cool to see this process unfold! Really enjoying it. I am 38 and just found the first truck I learned to drive. I was 7 yrs old on our ranch and used it to check the property, plow and explore. It's a 78 Jeep J10 pickup. We had to sell it when I was 15 and my parents divorced. I am now trying my hardest to rescue the truck from the scrap yard so I can rebuild it. I didn't talk to my dad for almost 10 years and we recently reconnected. I'd love to turn some wrenches on it with him. I'm currently living in Maryland and the truck is in Colorado close to wear my old lives. This channel has inspired me tremendously! I'd even love to get the truck to you and have you do some of the fabrication. That would be really cool. I'll work towards it. Thanks again for the inspiration

Anyone who's been around for a while knows that there is usually a big difference between what someone wants to drive when they are 40 and what they want to drive when they are 80. That is how long ago that Ed actually drove the Golden Nugget. I agree with updates in order to make it more reliable and easier to drive and maintain.

I agree. I was going to put an auto into my dads old powerwagon because his knees prevented him from shifting all the time. Sadly, I ran out of time. There's never enough time. So no time like the present.

Well said sir! In my youth I was happy to lay rubber all over my little town in my red '79 Mustang 5.0 liter "The Boss" (gosh I loved that car!) Now - please just let me tool around in my cushy red Honda Accord and I'm happy! Hmmmm I wonder if she could lay a patch...?

Hey, I just wanted to say that i really enjoy the dynamics between you and wifey, the way she interacts with the different builds makes the series more interesting compared to "traditional" fabrication channels where its usually just one dude and no one to interact with him.

Man Paul it might have been easier to just fit the old body on the sidekick frame. 🤷‍♂️

Given the American Samurai was a later generation of the Jimny, of which Ed's little truck was the first generation, probably easiest would've been Sidekick motor, on Samurai frame, with the LJ20 body dropped on. Advantage of retaining the frame, is if the VIN is stamped on the frame, then the vehicle retains its '72 title, registration, and if required, emissions thresholds for passing a smog test.

What all of you are and have done for Ed brings tears to my eyes. I am sure he has a lot of memories tied to that Suzuki. Most people would just say move on and get something new, it's too far gone. We do live though in the present, the future, and perhaps most importantly our past, which made us who we are.

For sure do a remote filter mount for the oil. Gives ya more capacity and can put the filter somewhere easy to access. Maybe Electric power steering since it won’t have huge wheels and will allow you to ditch the pump. Save room loss some drag on the motor.

Personally I would have tried to use the newer Suzuki chassis and drive train and just built new body mounts mainly so I could just go buy parts from any parts place but I'm not there with the tape measure to say yeah that would work either great work Paul can't wait for the finished product I'm sure Ed will love it

Not to mention the sidekick chassis rides 1000 times better than a samurai since it has the coils versus leaf springs. Also the sidekick will already be set up for power steering where this frame will not and need additional fab. A sidekick/tracker is still plenty capable offroad.

True but there was no sidekick chassis when this project kicked off.
