Since we were at a school, we did get the police to deal with the situation and he ended up moving. It’s unfortunate what happened but in order to get out of the vehicle, we had to ask him to move. We hope that he realizes his mistake and never does it again.

Here is my tip that I have learned. if someone is in a handicapped spot when they are not, take down their license plate and take a picture of them in the spot. You can report it by calling the police. Anytime I have confronted someone they get defensive and say "I was only hear for a second." Unfortunately it's rare to see someone apologize.
@bethg7026
@bethg7026 3 года назад
As someone with a hidden disability, I honestly prefer this approach, because then I have the chance of maintaining some dignity in the situation. I once parked in a disabled spot at work, on my way to my committee on accessibility meeting, and when I got out of my truck, an employee was waiting there and asked me if I was disabled. Apparently he either didn't see my hangtag, or didn't believe it was for my use. I was so humiliated. I am the assistant director for EHS at my University. I took that job after my disability had caused so much damage that I could no longer physically do the job that I loved. And sitting in my back seat, where he couldn't see them, were my knee and ankle braces, hot hands because I have raynaud's syndrome, and a pair of forearm crutches. In my previous job I personally designed every ADA workspace for a 60K square foot building, and worked with our student accessibility services each and every time we had a student in my building with a physical challenge. After telling him that yes, I was disabled and listening to him awkwardly backpedal, I walked away, into a bathroom, and cried my eyes out.

@@bethg7026 I’m so sorry that happened to you and made you feel so awful. My disability is hidden but not physical; in my efforts to be an ally to friends and colleagues with physical disabilities, I’d like to know the best thing to do in this situation. To avoid putting someone through what you experienced, would them taking down your license plate # and taking a photo been better? I’m just trying to understand better. I should probably ask the other person who commented above, but would calling the cops, be reporting it? Or will it require them to send a squad car? I am opposed to calling police on people since they have have a tendency to use excessive force for minor offenses against members of my community, so I wouldn’t take that approach. What another option?
@bethg7026
@bethg7026 3 года назад
@@Nrbrown I do understand the fear that many BIPOC and individuals with mental health disorders have about police encounters. I think this is a situation that should be left to the police, both for the witness and the accused. Look at what Cole and Charisma faced when they, who obviously need those spots to be left available, faced. Look at what is happening around the country, with people assaulting and killing others over wearing a mask. You never know if the person you are confronting is going to snap and turn this into a violent situation. If someone is parking illegally in a disabled spot, that person is violating the law. That person should have the police called, so that the police can issue them a ticket, and if need be, tow their car away. And then there is my perspective. I frankly would much rather have a police officer come and see that I'm legally allowed to park there, than to have to justify my right to park in that spot to a stranger who knows nothing about me, and can't understand that some people may look "fine", but we also have situations where we desperately need that spot.
@Nrbrown
@Nrbrown 3 года назад
@@bethg7026 Thanks for breaking it down to me Beth. I see, so having the officer come to check is better than an individual asking. Especially when considering that it is violating the law and would be an instance where they should get a ticket from that officer. That makes sense that it would be appropriate to call 911 and let them deal with the situation. Okay, I have a better understanding, thank you for replying back :)

Yes you never KNOW what type of people or person you are up against. They could appear normal in appearance and then this little altercation with you is the last thing to send them over the phone edge. In the city I live in,which was never known for gun violence is now happening way too much. A lady was leaving THE MALL in a nice part of town and at the light waiting for the light to turn green and someone pulled back into the parking lot back to the lane next to hers and shot n killed her. I didn't follow up but they were sure the lady didn't know who the shooter was. She didn't end up surviving. I saw on Crime Watch a man got mad at the car behind them and stopped his car demanded the people get out n tried to attach them with a knife. He got the woman,she survived. After it was done and the police searched his vehicle they found several weapons with artillery and figures he was actually about to seek out random people to kill and hurt. Granted the female he attacked before her man grabbed his attention got hurt but it stopped a ton more people from getting hurt. My point is you NEVER KNOW WHO you are coming up against no matter if you are in an area you are familiar with a d feel safe at...it's NOT worth it to risk it Yes people need to be educated but that saying you can't lead a horse to water, you can't force someone to be educated especially if they jump from calm to angry that quickly. It's apparent something was going on with their day or life and they chose to take it out on you two Sadly, they probably didn't view you two as a threat so felt comfortable going off but had there been someone they felt like would no no match they probably would have been nicer I find it when I'm with my husband people are nicer than if I'm alone like male wise. Stay safe and God Bless 👍💗💗💗🐢🐢🐢cara

I have only been confronted about using a handicap spot when I was a high school student. At this point, I had had about 7 spinal surgeries but I was still ambulatory. A man approached me and said “that’s a handicap spot.” I responded “yes it is :) and I have a handicap placard hung up on my mirror if you look.” He proceeded to follow me down the sidewalk saying “that’s a handicap spot. That’s a handicap spot.” I finally turned around and pulled up my shirt a little to reveal my huge scar. I said “I am disabled! I cannot walk long distances. I park in the handicap spot because I have a disability. “ he finally backed off after that.

I'm a T4-5 and i use a Permobil M300. I live in an apartment complex in a rough neighborhood. One day last year I was going to my mailbox when a really rough looking young guy spat at me from a balcony. I asked him what his problem was and he told me that I should have been drowned at birth. He said I can't live like other people so I might as well be dead so I could save the Government's money. I am a registered nurse by the way and NOT on a fixed income. I laughed at him and he ran down the stairs and drew back on me, threatening to beat me up. One of my other neighbors ran up to him and knocked him on his arse. It was quite funny. He got an instant lesson about treating people with civility as my neighbor forced him to apologize. LOL!

Charisma, I give you my utmost respect for loving and caring for Cole. While the loving may come easy, being a full time caregiver isn’t so much. It’s hard at times and can take a toll on you so please take care of yourself as much as you can. I had the honor of being my Dad’s sole caregiver for 17 years until his death at age 92. It’s clear the two of you have love and respect for each other. That in itself is so refreshing to see.

This has happened to me SO many times! My mother is in a wheelchair and both she and I have been threatened so many times by people parking in disabled spaces who are not disabled. Also, people using accessible toilets who are not disabled. It really is the worst of humanity. Two incidents, out of the dozens, if not more, stand out. A mother who was parked in the disabled parking space while her kids were in the shop. My mother had a dr's appointment and I literally couldn't get her to it if I couldn't park there. Everywhere else was parked out and it was hilly and there was nowhere else I could actually park and get her out. I asked the mother if she or family were disabled and explained that I needed to get my mother to the dr's - she just blew up immediately and started screaming at both of us! She refused to move and Mum missed her appointment. This happened at this location so many times that we actually changed dr's. Another time we were having a nice outing at the art gallery. Mum has continence issues and suddenly needed to go to the toilet. We were waiting and waiting and waiting outside the accessible toilet, the person left and as we were about to roll in a father and daughter pushed past us into the toilet! I said, hang on, my mother is waiting here, he looked at her and looked at me and said I'm a parent, we're a minority too! What??? He continued to the toilet. Mum ended up soiling herself and was so distressed I had to take her home. It ruined our outing. We were both so distressed. Since when is having a child being a minority??? Don't most people have children?? I have to say that there are also many different responses from kind people who ask if they can help when they see me transferring Mum out of the car. But these people are just the worst. And people who don't have disabled people in their lives are constantly shocked and appalled that this actually happens. But it does. Good on you. And keep on advocating. We still have a long way to go for disabled rights.

If there is a regular spot close I will typically take it unless I’m having a bad pain day. I’ve had to get ugly with people before showing them my internal pain pump scars and told them my story of having 6 back surgeries. It is absolutely crazy to me that people are that rude to others who clearly NEED the handicap space! I will very very very seldomly park next to the hash marks because someone with a wheelchair or scooter may need that area. I’m so sorry you went through this but glad you have each other. Charisma and Cole you were both correct in educating this man. I am 62 years old, walk with a cane due to arthritis and have a handicapped ♿ decal . I get what happened to you both all the time and even get people walking in doors before me not holding them. The nursing home I worked at fired me because I contacted the American Disabilities Association submitting a complaint because the nursing home wouldn't put handicap blue lines down clearly in the parking lot where I worked even though I went to them several times and asked and call the police to ticket individuals who parked in the spots with no decals. The Nursing home was fined because they were in violation of the ADA guidelines rules 1 and 3 😁 so justice was served and I got a new job. It ended well thanks for sharing your story.

Cole & Charisma i totally understand where you’re coming from. My little sister (34yrs old) needs a wheelchair due to Cerebral Palsy. She also has mental impairment and is blind. She is an extremely cheerful, happy woman. As a family we had decided to go on a vacation when a family friend invited the whole family to her cruise wedding. One of the excursions was a beach day to which we brought my sister, and she was excited. Since we were in a different country, they didn’t provide a wheelchair for the sand, but we made it happen with a whole lot of muscle and effort. We picked a nice beach spot and got settled. Then suddenly our spot got bombarded with cigarette smoke. We realized where it was coming from and kindly asked the elderly couple if they wouldn’t mind not smoking at that area due to the fact my sister and myself have issues with asthma. They immediately got pissed off and told us off (without cussing). They kept on smoking and even pulled on their cigarettes more to blow smoke in our direction. The people working there saw it was creating a big scene and offered to find us a nice spot with shade close to the water ahead of the smoke and wind which was fine. My other sister just yelled to the Smokey couple “God will take care of you too!”

Classic: malignant narcissist. He could be used as a teaching example. They HATE being called out and "proven wrong" never mind how politely it is done. Normal people would move, somewhat sheepishly, especially if the person addressing them is with someone that is visibly disabled. They certainly would not explode, and as they are _rational_ (and feeling somewhat guilty about it), they would hope not to be reported and fined. Narcissism is different than having anger issues, which are not triggered when asked nice and they returned to calm. Also the ease with which he lied. It is one thing to deny that he called her names (he is not going to self implicate in front of the police). It is another thing to claim they insulted him:

Angry old men with walking sticks often imagine they’re the only ones that might need the space and I’ve almost had my windscreen smashed by them using their stick to knock and tell me I’m not allowed to park there and then swear and shout at me when they’re proven wrong. Not to mention the 100s of invisible disabilities and illnesses that may see a person getting out of the car and walking away from it that doesn’t make them undeserving of the space like so many people think they are. They aren’t just for wheelchair users.

Cole, I can understand your feelings about protecting. But remember even big powerful men get shot because of all the weapons about. So it is no reflection on you brother

This happened to me . I have Multiple Sclerosis and 2 major back surgery. I parked in the handicap parking area with my parking permit hanging on my rearview mirror. When I got out on one of my good days I was using a shopping cart. A man about my age at the time said to me I hope you like cheating worthy people out of their close parking. I was just so angry that I saw him I the store and told him I pray that you will never have the reasons that makes me worthy of parking in handicap. Please if a placard is in a person's car, all disabilities are not so visible. I love you guys. I follow the two of you. I'm 60 years old had to leave my marriage after 35 yrs. together due to his infidelity. Seeing the two of you gives me hope that I will have true love in my life. I wasn't always disabled. My ex husband was a cheater from the start. God Bless you. You uplift my soul and spirit everytime I view your blog. Hoping that your future will always have love and positivity. Kim Hatcher. Florissant, Mo.

First of all it’s my comment! Like I said you’re bored! And you’re exactly correct, this is social media, so wtf are you so mad and pressed that this as$hole parked in a handicapped space, then tried to play tough guy with a woman and a man who obviously can’t defeat himself 🤔

Marisol white Ha! I wish it was like that but it’s not. I got a ticket while in a car. The lady was so slick I didn’t even see her. I was pissed.

Marisol white In NY they also have buses that can take pictures of your license plate if you’re in the bus lane. Then they mail a ticket to you. Even if you were in the lane only for a short while. You can only be in a bus lane to turn.

You can have full use of your body parts and you still have to use decernment a size does not matter just be careful. That being said, don't you dare feel less than a man. Better a live one than a dead one.

He clearly knew he was being an ass if he got that hot headed. It’s sad that his ego was that big and he is that violent. Ugh 😩 why we need to raise emotionally literate and caring boys and men. I’m also happy You guys were able to take a step back and just stay safe.
