We did a whole lot in Rocky Mountain National Park in less than 24 hours! In last week’s episode, • TRYING TO BEAT THE WEA... , we got to our site in Moraine Campground and headed right out to drive the Old Fall River Road over the pass to Grand Lake and back for an amazing sunset at the top!
Very early the next morning, we headed out for #sunriseanddonuts at Bear Lake and hiked Emerald Lake Trail, a 3.2 mile out and back trail that leaves from Bear Lake and passes 2 other lakes before the insane view of Emerald Lake surrounded by majestic mountians and a stunning waterfall..
Corey’s dad jokes were in full force for this hike, and we got so see even more wildlife including the beef jerky eating kind!
We were back to the truck before 10am showing that you can do so much in this park in less than 24 hours! We don’t recommend rushing through your time in National Parks, but sometimes your time is limited and for others, the weather may not be good the whole time, so you need to do what you can, when you can.
One of the down sides to getting sites through cancellations is that sometimes you have to move in the middle of your stay. We used this as an opportunity to dump our tanks and fill up on water. It is always such a nice BONUS when your next site is better than your last!
Our 2nd day in Rocky Mountain National Park ended with a delicious dinner made completely over the fire! Thankfully, there was only one casualty!
Stay tuned for the next episode as we score one of the best sites we have ever had and get up for the earliest sunrise to date! Be sure to like and subscribe and click on the bell icon for notifications when we release new videos!

back about 35 years I had a cancerous tumor removed from my bladder. I remember talking to a co-worker about his own battle and he said "Dave, I find my best treatment is to do something you love, often I go to the little league field and reminisce about my children and the awesome times we had together, and coaching them". 35 years later, I am battling prostate cancer and carcinoid cancer. My best memories are of camping trips with Mary Jo and David Junior. Your journey to Rocky Mountain National Park is helping me with the treatment. One of our road trips was our 'Western Trip" though we didn't specifically go to Rocky Mountain National Park, we did get to the Grand Tetons, Grand Canyon, and Mount Rushmore, with several other National Park, visit on our way out and back. So much of what you have seen and captured on video is familiar. Especially the Elk that we saw in Yellowstone. I think of the elusive bears that we never saw, but were always about 2 miles from where they were "last seen" We even saw the friendly chipmunks. We have now seen more bears in Glastonbury, CT than out west. Enjoy your journey to finding you Someday! And thanks for sharing it with me. Good Bless and Safe Travels.

We have three fire methods. I (Gramppa Beard) usually do the log cabin method, but will sometimes do the teepee thing. But sometimes, I want a small fire that I can keep burning all day. Then I use the "sunray" method. The sunray method is much easier when not confined by a campsite fire ring. The idea is to have 5-7 sticks laid out like rays from the sun. Where they meet in the center, they can stack a little for lighting. That center is the only place where there is going to be fire. As the ends of the sticky burn, I push them in towards that center. When a stick is burned up, add another and continue. It doesn't work with logs unless you split them into 3" or smaller pieces.
@FindingOurSomeday

Thanks so much for the Fire recommendation! We will have to try the sun-ray version! Thanks for joining us and taking the time to comment!

FIRE PIT? the best way is to tepee the logs, place a rolled up newspaper in the middle of the logs , if you can find pine cones in the area, place them also in the middle, the oil from the pines will make the fire burn at a correct temp. to bbq.

We usually lay 3 sticks in an A on the ground. Then lay kindlin sticks across the hole in the A and then buld a teepee over that. We start the fire with lint from the clothes dryer that we stuff under the kindlin on the A and usually get an instant fire and just add bigger sticks until the coals and flame is big enough to add logs. Then in the morning when we wake up there are usually enough hot coals left to start a fire without the need to rebuild a teepee.

Log cabin burning into tepee fire (no blower, though (ha, ha!)) Kabobs - Meats maybe w/ Onion chunks, Veggies Separate for the most part, Fresh Pineapple chunks w/ a little spicy heat - Oh Yeah! Dream Lake hands down. We took a trail above all of these lakes and were able to see over them and others, couldn't make my knees do it now, though. We just returned home yesterday from RMNP and just now watched this video. We were able to pinpoint when you were there by the sunrise time you stated (Thursday August 4). They had closed Fall River Road for the season while we were there. And the road to Grand lake was very iffy. We made it up to the Alpine Visitors Center and it began snowing pretty heavily. We were told that if we went on to Grand Lake that there was a chance the pass might be closed before we made our return run and we would have to go the long way around. 3.5 hours! We decided to pass on that! So it great to see your video of it since we missed that side. We love all your videos! Keep posting them!

Nice video. Great family experience. We did RMNP in 1992! We did Trail Ridge Road, Bear Lake to Alberta Falls, and Longs Peak! I only made it to the Keyhole at 13,200 ft but it was an amazing hike. 30 years later and a 4 mile hike in the Blue Ridge mountains is all I want to do, but I still get out there. PS: I like the meat kabob, no green peppers for me....

Congrats on finishing your Solar system!!! Having a similar setup with 2 more lions and 1200 watts on the roof, the only real changes we make when off grid, are we switch the water heater and fridge over to Propane and I unplug the outdoor fridge (We have an Imagine 3250BH so similar to yours in size) the static draw is 1-3 amps on our system, so insignificant I dont even think about it. If we will be boondocking for a longer time, I will unplug the recliners, and charging cords until we need them, try to limit microwave use, other than that we just use everything as normal. we do like to watch local news if we can get it, so we will even use the TV as normal, it really doesnt draw much. Im sure by now you have gotten more comfortable with your system. my one tip would be. if you dont already have spare fuses for everything, including the big 300 or 400 amp battery bank fuse (ours is 400 amp and I have blown it, yes it stinks) there are odd situations that can make things not go as planned, and that was one of them. I had a charge current setting too high and my batteries were at like 5%, I plugged into a 30 pedestal, we turned on the A/C, throw in an iffy Crimp on a 4/0 cable and everything went dead and all I smelled was burning electrical (no damage). Fortunately I had an extra fuse, and final diagnosis was due to Victron data I could retrieve off the internet, I was able to see the spike on the historical graph. Love Victron, and Lion Energy!!!!

Great content as always! Since you asked: 1) Off grid always on solar/battery setup, I was also super excited when we got a full off-grid system and I overanalyzed and monitored the draw and consumption...In the end it's negligible, don't stress about it. 2) Fire logistics, as a Boy Scout from the late-80's, the only acceptable and approved process is the teepee strategy (ha ha). Why am I hungry all the sudden?

I'm a Californian...open fires panic me! LOL! So we are neither teepee or log cabin! LOL! We haven't lived in a "green" world for the past 20 years so open fires are not a "thing" for us. As for the kabob...start with veg and end with veg...we usually do exactly what you do...some meat only, some mixed, some veg only. One of our favorite meals! Loved the hike. My dad always said that there is so much magic that happens while most of the world is asleep and it's gone by the time they wake. It's always worth it to get up for the magic!

I'm Team Log Cabin for getting a fire started (log cabin built around an internal tepee of kindling), but once the bottom logs start to burn down, I switch over to tepee. Log cabin style allows for greater airflow in the early stages of a campfire, also traps heat better once established, and provides a larger bed of coals, or such is my theory, hahaha. I like to think I know a bit about fire, given I was arrested for arson when I was 5 years old for accidentally setting a power pole on fire while playing with matches stolen from my parents, knocked out power for the entire cul-de-sac. It was a fake arrest, something my parents arranged once the fire department and police showed up, but they cuffed me and put my in the back seat of the police car while I cried my eyes out and begged my dad to tell them I was sorry, I'd never do it again. He just shook his head and told me "There's nothing I can do, you broke the law and people who break the law go to jail." The cops just drove me a couple of blocks away then pulled over and gave me "the talk" and made me promise to never play with matches ever again, which I of course did, then they turned around and took me back home. In truth, it didn't stop me from playing with matches or lighting things on fire, just made me much more careful to not get caught. Then soon after I turned 8, our family went camping for the first time ever and my Dad (who had always looked askance at me after another small but mysterious neighborhood fire occurred) wisely put me in charge of our campfire and very suddenly the unexplained neighborhood fires abruptly stopped. We continued camping 2x a year, spring and fall, until my mid-teens, and I was always in charge of the campfire. My fires tended to be larger than strictly necessary, a trend that continues to this day. Once I left home and started to make my way in the world, my skill with campfires and especially bonfires became known among my peers and I found myself invited to a lot of outdoor activities I might not have otherwise been invited to. Who says crime doesn't pay???

Awesome Video. I learned Kabobs from my dad. He would use steak and sausage to alternate between the vegetables. We'd used onions, bell peppers, and pineapple. The meat was seasoned, then we would baste as it is cooking with french salad dressing. I may have to make some this weekend, it looks so good

I use the teepee fire build, it's never failed so far. When I make kabobs I like to sear the meat with salt and pepper first then build the kabobs and I do use potato on the skewers with bell pepper and onion and for my skewers I like to throw on some jalapeno also.

You are so blessed to have such a great relationship with your daughters. Don’t ever take it for granted. Those lakes were epic, and the surrounding area is so beautiful. It amazes me how beautiful our country is, and how blessed we are to live here. Hopefully one day people will wake up, stop bickering and realize how fortunate we are. Was that buck you filmed at the beginning of the video really that close to you? Thanks again for a great video, and for your never ending reminder of how much you care for your truck! It does always look nice though! I love a man who’s food is a favorite thing to cook and eat!

What a great episode - not that the others aren't ;-) I've been following your channel for a while (subscribed) and appreciate the wholesomeness of your videos. Great videography and editing, and the background music! Quality. And what a beautiful family. You made me cry with the 'Happy Dad' comment, I can relate so much. Regarding campfire making techniques - I'm a hybrid (log cabin/teepee), and I've used a blower LOL. Don't ever apologize about your clean truck - I've got the EXACT SAME Denali and am obsessed about keeping it clean, same for our North Point fifth wheel. Thanks for welcoming us all along on your adventures. Keep up the fantastic work FOS Crew!

Again, you guys rock as a family and adventures. The videos and photography are first rate. As an old campfire cook…slightly pre-cook the potatoes…as you now have the technology, nuke them for a couple of minutes in the microwave first. However putting them in foil pouches with butter, oil, and seasoning really works. Love watching you all and your adventures. Thanks…
