How did we get here?
After a year of full time travel living the van life, we had to adapt when the world changed. To keep busy we’ve converted our tiny house on wheels into a fully functioning off grid home that has everything we need. Realizing that none of us know how long this new normal will stick around, we made the decision that building a home here was the best decision we could make. We've spent the last year doing EVERYTHING involved with coordinating and planning the build ourselves as well as setting up this off grid property to be able to provide us with the the food we'll need in the future. That led us to needing a place to live while we realized our dream of building a shipping container home. After lots of searching we finally discovered Geodesic Dome's and it was the perfect fit for us while we took our time with the container home.

It’s been two Sunday’s in a row posting an extra long video, what do you all think?! Do you like videos that are more short and to the point or ones like these when we just bring you along for what’s happening throughout the week…cavities and all LOL. Jokes aside, it’s always super helpful when you share what you enjoy about the videos, we've been trying our hardest to create more enjoyable and higher quality videos every Sunday so we're ALL ears! ❤

Don't cut the asparagus they are building their energy and roots. I'm glad that you are being aware of the frost it took me a few years replanting my starts because I was too impatient. My spinach is growing strong and I love picking my salad from my garden. Nothing better. Blessings

Ahh finally, my time time shine 😂Leave the asparagus be. It’ll grow into big, fluffy ferns and that lets it capture energy to store for next year. And each spear isn’t 1 plant - 1 plant will produce many spears. Usually in the new year when they start to pop up, you can pick them all for about 6-8 weeks then you stop and let them fern up. I’m here for the gardening content 😊

Do not cut the asparagus until the third year. The roots need time to grow larger and more robust. I would only harvest sparingly until the plants are 5 years old. At that time you can harvest several times each season, then allow the shoots to grow to maturity. Never disturb the roots of asparagus, as this will severely impact the health of the plant. I recommend mulching well and if weeding is needed use the stirrup design hoe as it only removes the weeds above the grade. Some nice compost under the mulch a couple of times a year will keep the asparagus in tip top shape. Enjoy!

I had a giggle about falling into a deep chest freezer. I'm the youngest of 6 and my dad was the bread winner ( Cdn Navy , then a transit driver )My parents grew up during the end of WW2 and the depression.. My mum grew our vegetables and then blanched/ froze as well as pickled or canned them. She would buy a full cow of meat, once a yr, from a local farm and then put them in the deep chests. People were amazed we ate so well. There was us 6 kids as well as my dad's mum later on as well as two " foster brothers" my brothers brought home whose step parents had kicked them out of their family homes. So 8 kids / teenagers and three adults. My mum fed us all buy growing all our vegetables and potatoes. She knew how to safe and get a good deal. God bless her . Your garden is going to be even better than last year and your body will thank you for the fresh and organic food . You have created quite the oasis in Canada's Atlantic playground.

I am 79 and really like everything on your channel. I especially love it when you are outdoors and I can almost smell the pines in the breeze and the rich soil of your gardens. I must tell you that I lived with my husband "off-grid" in the 70's. We lived at about an altitude of 10,000 ft outside of Breckenridge, Colorado. What a difference 50 odd years makes! We were surrounded by Forest Service land, so it was perfect for privacy! Our only electric hookup was a car battery hooked up to our cassette player. We heated with the plentiful lodge pole pines that had fallen to the ground and aged for about 3 years. In the fall a propane truck backed about 1 1/2 miles our steep road to fill up our propane tank for the gas cook stove. We always left him a bottle of scotch on top of the tank for a tip! We had on all-year spring that surfaced right behind the cabin. The water was always clean and great, since there were no pastures higher up and no mine tailings around. We worked hard all summer so that we could play all winter. As the ski area grew we found ourselves cross-country skiing more and more each winter to avoid lift lines. One additional thing you have that we didn't was a growing season! Our growing season lasted between 10 days and 2 weeks. I wish we had looked up moving to your area of Canada as I think it was much easier for us to move across the border back then. Who knows we still might be living off grid! Love you guys!

I have a mature asparagus patch. Let them grow all the way up - it'll be like a big lacy hedge. This is what you do every year after harvesting through June. But to establish great roots you let them just grow for the first three years. When you do harvest, you cut every shoot, then stop at the end of June.
@bethmcguinn8606
@bethmcguinn8606 Год назад
Some suggestions from a long time gardener: 1 do NOT cut your asparagus - it will grow tall and ferny. That's what produces food for the roots. 2 consider garden beds 2-3.5' wide. You'll have more growing space and a smaller amount of space in paths. 3 chest freezers are much more energy efficient - hot air rises, cold air sinks, so you lose tons of cold air when you open an upright freezer, but not with a chest freezer . Best of luck with your garden!

I would love it, if you could get back to making your videos more personal again. I would settle down for the evening with you all or be making breakfast when you did. I think I tracked this change back to when your rentals were vandalized and I am so sorry that happened and have healed from that. But don't let it change how you plan your filming. Because you left your onions in the ground over winter they will seed this year... let them seed and you will have onion seeds for next year (start them super early in your greenhouse or house keep them warm). I would plant some onion sets this year if you want a harvest, get the in the ground ASAP. Do not cut the asparagus this year let it seed out. When they turn brown cut them back to the ground after collecting seeds if you want too. Next year you can start cutting (usually just takes a finger to pinch them off). As you cut they will get thicker each year. We have a patch of asparagus that is almost 20 years old now. We get huge stalks now. Also you can get a harvest off your asparagus all growing season just make sure you go out and get them before they become woody. If they do just cut them back down to the ground unless you want them to seed out. The stalks on asparagus will come back all season. I have been collecting for around 2 months now down here in KY. Garden looks great!

Marigolds deter bugs from garden foods. My son is a gardener (not me). Always, all the gardens he's been involved with (big community gardens, small gardens) have marigolds on the perimeter to deter bugs that want to "nibble" on the harvest. (not nipple... forgive my typo!!!)

You need a wedge when your saw gets stuck, the weight is all sitting back on the hinge and pinching the cut. Amazon has them. RU-vid is full of tree surgeon videos that demonstrate use of wedges. Be safe, use the gear.

Guys: the logs at the edge of the gravel under the solar panels. Why not just put in some stakes to keep the logs from rolling where you don't want them to roll? Or may a 75 cm lengths of rebar?

Let these 1st aspargus sprouts grow! Next year you can harvest anything that is bigger diameter than a pencil, but let everything else grow again. 3rd year you should have a healthy bed. From that point, do not harvest any spears from pencil diameter or smaller. You don’t ever ‘cut’ asparagus. You develop a feel for the spears to snap under the ground as you grasp the stalks at their base. Kinda of a slight rotation as you ‘feel’ the plant give under the soil. Also, do not walk on top of it! It crushes and bruises it under the ground. When you bring your harvest inside, you also don’t cut the root end off. You snap each piece and it will always snap at the spot where the more fibrous section ends. Don’t throw those ends away! They add excellent flavor when boiling for cream of asparagus soup, and can even be emulsified to be added to the soup as well. Each crown you planted will keep sending spears up as it grows stronger and you’ll get about a 6-8wk picking season. But it is key to let the thinner spears grow to fern at the end. Never cut it down.

Let the asparagus leaf out, don't cut them. The bigger the plant the bigger the corm/root. 3rd year more spears...👍

As an American who used to live in Michigan but now lives in the south, I think it is so funny and endearing that you think that is a big snake. Growing up where I used to I fully get the sentiment that it is big and I too love that he is thriving in habitat restoration... but my dad came home 2 weeks ago telling us some 4 foot mystery snake had climbed the shipping dock and the next day another one got into their warehouse trying to cool down. It really reminds me of how different things are up north to here.

But the love you throw at each other without knowing is remarkable Can’t wait to see what you would like after a couple of glasses blueberry wine. Oh my gosh.
