Wild clay: Be careful with your firing temperatures. 20 years ago, I had a guy in my class who spent an entire weekend digging clay out of stream beds north of here. He went through all the steps to create a workable clay, spun it out on the wheel into a gorgeous pot, then fired it. It survived the bisque firing, but the final glaze firing, he ended up with a melted rock puddle which oozed into other projects done by other students and he had to replace the kiln shelf, financially, because his experiment was a bomb. Do a small sample project and see how it fires!!! Have fun!!! God bless!!!

Build a well-house, bathroom, kitchen building...put trapdoor on the floor and grow the mushrooms under the building. Get some worms for your raised beds...use drip irrigation to water everything. Utilize water catchment on everything you build...even on garden shades. You can use billboard tarps to catch water and create shades off both sides of your container. Lease me a place and I'll buy another container and build a connecting covered area. I have a plasma cutter and welders, lots of aviation fabrication tools and seriously good diagnostic skills. My career was troubleshooter in aviation industry.

A minimum of 2,000 gallons of water (20 casing volumes times 100 gallons) should be flushed from the well. In some cases, allowing water to discharge from a garden hose for 24 hours can correct contamination problems. Get the water tested before drinking: DOH recommends that private well owners test their drinking water every year for coliform bacteria and nitrate. These two contaminants rapidly could affect a person's health-possibly even with just one drink of water.
@MichaelWilliams-ro9bm
@MichaelWilliams-ro9bm 4 дня назад
Her water is filtered automatically actually because it is mountain water. Not like back east water where it’s 20 feet down.
@user-eu7jb8ev8t
@user-eu7jb8ev8t 4 дня назад
@@MichaelWilliams-ro9bm Hopefully, always good have it checked out, even deep wells can have issues with high levels of arsenic and other heavy metals. Many wells have issues from the drilling, it can introduce above ground bacteria like e coli, jardiance into the well and contamination of well, you'll need shock the well with bleach to fix it, then retest it.. My brother in law a well digger for over 30 years, he always tell folks to run the well, get the test sample from the water spigot, never use the hose, since hoses have bacteria in them, could give a false reading, why you should never drink off a garden/ outdoor hoses. Anyways looking forward to her project...

Looks like you're off to a great start, but it ain't easy bein' green--not in the mountain west! I've been gardening here for 30 years, and feel compelled to throw in my two cents. The wildlife will find your garden if you do not protect it somehow, probably right before your first harvest. Do you have culinary hose for your drinking water? If left in the sun, carcinogenic chemicals can leach into the water especially as garden hose ages. And finally, start investing in bamboo stakes! I have 8', 6', 5' and 2' lengths, from which I can make trellises, temporary fencing, plant supports, and myriad other uses around the garden. They're relatively cheap, sustainable, and last through the dry summers and harsh winters. Good luck! Mountain gardeners need more than the average bear.

How many horsepower is your well pump? I’m at 7500 ft off grid in mountains of Idaho. Have 4500w generator after generator fail in the winter. Have Eco flows in the house.that work great on our small solar system but hadn’t considered it for the well pump. BTW, been meaning to tell you, you and Chris are welcome anytime. Or just you if you are rambling. Stocked Alpine lake 3 miles up the mountain. Our Eco flow powers our 3 bedroom house. Been here 11 years, have a garden and starting a second home for just me. ❤

Being that you're in a dry climate, you should build a taller bed as most plants need at least a foot or more and you'll have enough space for large root plants. Rather than spending a fortune on soil, fill up the first 2/3 of it with twigs and leaves and then put soil on the top 1/3. All the twigs/leaves will break down slowly into the soil and provide a lot of nutrition. Start to compost and incorporate it into the soil to built the nutritional value. Also, MULCH so you keep the soil moist.

This one retired couple in the high desert of Texas years ago made a system that channels their septic straight into these purforated underground tubes they were growing their garden directly on top of. They basically built a recycled human manure works that directly self-fertilized their food garden from underneath. And the whole thing was basically a set of toilet-fed leach lines buried under their outdoor garden. It was genius.

keep all your egg shells and when you have enough make sure they are dry enough, i put mine in the dehydrator for a couple of minutes, and grind it all up - its great for the garden esp for crops that need a lot of calcium like tomatoes etc. I never throw egg shells away these days

What I do every morning is toos my egg shells out in the back yard right as I crack my eggs in the pan. The powerful nutrients of the fresh egg goop getting into the soil has made my back yard look like that dark forest tuime lapse scene on the Jupiter moon Europa at the end of the 1984 scifi film "2010: The Year we make Contact." It works.

He ended up filling a homestead claim on the plot and he sold the water to wagons coming across the desert. He became wealthy selling water to travelers.

I drill a hole in the bottom of plastic pots, and grow tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers that grow out of the bottom, and in the top, I plant my snap peas. They grow up the chains that hold the pot. No weeds. 2 posts in the ground, and another across the top with hooks. I think that would work for you. Your garden looks great.

Few crazy suggestions and future ideas. Suggest putting a check valve at the top of the well to put less stress on your pump, keep the lift pipe full of water and have it easier to get water flowing. Eventually you will want a pressure tank setup with a pressure switch in a little pump house along with a GFCI to protect the well pump. Definitely agree with others a little pump shed or shelter at the well is a great idea for this. Also like the ideas to have an outdoor kitchen or sink with hardline water pipes to hookup hoses and a drip irrigation setup. If you have not seen his DIY off-grid solar videos, go check out Will Prowse. Definitely suggest you look into putting a ground-mount solar rack on top of your shipping container and an inverter/battery bank in it for more off-grid power. An EG4 6000XP all-in-one inverter/charger would be perfect for your future needs.

You may consider sending a water sample to get tested just to make sure your water does not have any harmful bacteria or heavy metals. Was a check valve installed just above the screen on the end of the well pipe? If not, a check valve will keep the pipe inside the well full of water so when you turn on the well pump the water will come out almost instantly. Consider putting a 90° ball valve on the end of your hose so no contaminants, insects, bugs, etc can enter the well through the hose

For the cucumbers you have at the end of your bed, you're going to need a trellis. The vines grow to 5 or 6 feet. I would just staple some chicken wire to the end of the bed and put in some supports to take it out about 6-8 feet. Then start training the plants to go to the trellis. they'll take off from there. So happy to see you got water! YAY!

They eat all my neighbors, tomatoes, her strawberries, the other things, and ran away with her pumpkins😅 that may be the only local wildlife you’ll have to worry about eating your food😂 if you want to plan, something truly beautiful, that will grow with barely any water….. grow sunflowers 🌻 🌻🌻🌻🌻 they grow amazing in the heat❤❤👍🏻👍🏻

In desert gardens inc the beds are sunken so sun has less surface to dry out. I'd also suggest you put a few trees in within your hose length& use that water first coming out. No wasted water.❤. Congratulations! That is truly a richness.🙏🏽🌎❤️🌎🙇🏻‍♀️

I know how to grow mushrooms. You need buckets. For a little while, you put no air in those buckets. Then you start taking the little red plugs. You put into the buckets to create air holes and put. Surtrical tape over the holes. Remember not a lot of air holes. You wanted to stay as contained as possible and you want to continue spraying it with water. You have to keep these buckets at a certain temperature. Or they will start to turn green. If they turn green moldy, they're no good. The temperature I usually keep my mushrooms would be at least 70 Degrees. They grow best between sixty eight degrees and seventy. I wanna do a video but I don't know if it's legal. Because sometimes people will think it's bad psychedelic mushrooms. And I don't no if I can get in trouble just for growing regular mushrooms on social media. Let me know and if you think I'll be okay, I'll make a video. ❤ Just know that your mushrooms cannot be hot. They have to be a bit on the cold side. Heat will make the mushrooms go bad. I would love to show you how this hole goes. I'm sure somebody on social media here. Nose headed, do this and probably has videos. Truly excited to see how it comes out.❤

Oh and arbor day foundation usually has tree saplings for you reasonably

To grow your mushroom in a plastic tote with a good lead that tightly closes. The darker the tote, the better. My friend grows mushrooms, and that's how she does it, and she lives in the desert of Arizona . So that should work for you. Also, keep it in a dark place as cool as you can get it.

Get second hand aquariums to grow your mushrooms in. You can then keep the humidity in the aquarium/terrarium. I know nothing about mushrooms, so I don’t know how much space you need, but I had a similar problem with growing orchids and I needed some humidity. I used terrariums. I actually have miniature orchids, so I didn’t need big terrariums. If you can’t find second hand aquariums, Petco sells them for a $1 a gallon once a year (not sure when they have their sale, and I think it may now be a 50% off sale).

you might want to build a nice fence or fenced greenhouse with a bit of shade, our friend from Texas did that, he had a lot of heat and humidity, you can build it around your garden before the wildlife finds it, hardware cloth is best as mice and snakes can not get through hardware cloth / congrats on your water well

I remember the lights coming on and crying along with you. Seems like that was only yesterday. Equally stoked with you for this land and all it's opportunities for you, Akela, Chris, and Kobuk. Such exciting adventures.

Big pop bottles are great to grow mushrooms in. Moisture because the plastic sweats.
