Hey, how ya doin’? I hope you’re doin’ well. In this HiTop Films video, HiTop discusses how our fan expectation and nostalgia has begun to destroy the possibility of seeing good Marvel Multiverse, DC Multiverse, stories. We Killed the Multiverse. It all started with Spider-Man No Way Home, an innocent idea of doing what we have dreamed of, bringing Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, Tom Holland together. Maybe it started with Spider-Verse before that.
Now, that innocence is now gone, lost. With The Flash being a Beautiful Lie filled with horrendous soulless cameos, Multiverse of Madness barely working due to the soul of Sam Raimi, and the future looking ever so predictable, why don’t we dream bigger.
I guess this is a HiTop Films Spider-Man Video, a Spider-Man Video Essay. Or Maybe it’s a MCU Video Essay. Maybe a DCEU Video Essay. I dunno. The point is something needs to change. We need to start dreaming bigger.

Are "We the problem" as in Disney is a company that utilizes Research groups and committees that honor the wishes of fans? Because I think it's a combination of that, and fans not being good writers, while also the lack of creativity at Disney since Disney didn't create the infinity saga. Infinity Stones for instance is one of the best themes or devices in storytelling history. It's a caper on a cosmic level. Just like there are ideas in Star Wars, The Matrix, even Indiana Jones that come around a few times a century. So I think the biggest issue with disney is their reliance on fans, not knowing what themes work, and Disney's lack of creativity which really centered on their wish fulfillment. All they need to do, imo, is return to traditional storytelling in that a story or a film is really the artistic expression of an individual. And not the most requested item on social media. The biggest problem they'll face is the fallout from the expectations they engineered through fan service over the years. But they'd overcome that by getting back to the basics and just hiring good writers and directors.

The whole intro is why across the spiderverse is doing well. Utilizing the culmination of all these great stories to tell a deeper over arching story that brings decades of writing and character development into a utter masterpiece. I think it’s because it isn’t a movie about Spider-Man the character but a movie about Spider-Man the idea. It’s a movie with a million different Spider-Men and Spider-Women and despite being all different and unique yet they’re all still equally Spider-Man. Even the Peter Parker we get isn’t the same high school Peter most adaptations go with, he’s a like what happens after those stories end. It’s world building with the Spiderverse and canon events is just the perfect adaptation of the legacy Spider-Man has. I can rant about my praise for both movies endlessly. How they gave us Miles instead of Peter #11 or their masterful exploration of transgenderism trough Gwen. How Hobie gets like 5 minutes of screen time yet absolutely steals the show and I haven’t even gotten into the animation yet.

It’s sad that Blue Beetle, which is not a multiversal superhero movie, has received the least marketing out of all the superhero films released so far from the big 2. It’s a self-centered, stand-alone, grounded, actually good film and it’s seen as having such a low chance of making its budget back that they would rather pump that budget into a multiverse movie.

Everything, Everywhere, All at Once is such a deep movie because it uses the multi-verse to ask questions we've all asked ourselves: What if I pursued my dream of becoming an actor? What if I married someone else? Will I ever get my chance at true happiness again? Sure the movie is also having a lot of fun with the sheer chaos of its plot. But it's really about finding true meaning within that chaos. And that's pretty much how we feel now. The world is chaotic and scary. Sometimes it feels meaningless. But everyone has something that is really valuable. And sometimes that value is just staring us in the face. Dreaming about multi-verses is fun. But what we already have is more important.

I think we haven’t really tapped into the multiverse’s potential at all. No Way Home was really about Peter’s world (the MCU) and the responsibility in him to help people despite all odds. If we saw the other universes there it would really bring the movie down in my opinion. As far as the villains go, they were definitely part of the plot for “nostalgia”, but I think Watts and co. smartly made that story about responsibility its consequences through the alternate self (the villains, tobey, andrew, and even strange being cruxes of that) work pretty damn well. As far as Multiverse of Madness goes, I think the Illuminati was also personal to the central theme which the video touches on as well- can Strange be happy while doing what he does? I do think the title is extremely misleading however, because MoM is very much a personal story rather than an exploratory one. The Flash, well, it’s again about the alternate self. As far as Batman goes, I got nothing. I wasn’t really huge on how they used him, Zod, or Supergirl despite their performances being fantastic. I think the multiverse is a concept that has FAR more to offer within these comicbook realms. I hope when the time comes that potential is utilized, because it would be quite sad if these entry point stories are all it ends up offering.

I think No Way Home worked where a lot of Marvel films don't work for me in that he had a pretty amazing central theme: "Fixing people that don't want to fixed." Its an astoundingly universal theme in that a lot of people, even on the most basic levels, can identify "problems" in someone else. Some people go out their way to try and show them "the best way." So it was something that I could follow. At first I thought it was a glitch and they would revert to just basic superficial predicaments, but then they gave the theme to the villain, So much so that when the theme flows through the villain we get lines like: "I'll fix you Peter" in Goblin's belief that Peter is too weak of a person for his powers, which then leads to lines like..."Good enough to have it all, too weak to take it" and "poor peter, too weak to send me home to die." I thought it was one of the most focused films out of all them. Which brings me to my second point: Disney is not creative. The Infinity Saga works (not for me but I can see why people pay attention) because of how simple yet complex the central theme to 20+ movies is. It's a caper on a cosmic level, with stones representing the most humanly intriguing aspects of the universe. And guess what, Disney didn't create the infinity saga, they co opted it and stretched it out through multiple movies. But imagine if someone like Nolan had that type of central theme. He'd redefine time and space and make it like visually artistic yet believable. Disney's model, by proof of their structure is through research groups and committees. And not through the artistic expression of an individual, which is how art has been made since the cave paintings. So how do you honor wish fulfilment for fans, entertain fans when they're not good writers(the basic fan doesn't know how to write but Disney takes their requests anyway), and you've run out of creative material? I think the easiest fix is to hire the best writers you can and fire your committees and research groups.

When I realized I was mainly excited to see Doctor Strange for a potential cameo by Patrick Stewart's Xavier, it broke my ability to care about the MCU. It did shatter the illusion for me and killed most of my enthusiasm for the multiverse. I also realized that this is just the endgame of the cinematic universe. When the MCU caught on and everyone tried to copy them, they tried to make Avengers movies immediately. Batman v Superman was DC's attempt to skip the worldbuilding needed to get characters in place to make a Justice League movie, and it showed in the quality of that product. The multiverse is the natural evolution of skipping to the end, where you don't even need to invent characters anymore if you can just get the guy who did the thing ten years ago to come back. This time, even Marvel isn't patient enough to do what Marvel did to make these movies work in the first place.

I really think that if these studios want to keep making movies in their connective universes, they should hold off on the multiverse until the very end. The multiverse is about as high as superhero stakes can get. When you have every earth crashing into each other, or every universe being snuffed out by a super being, then where do you go from there? You would need to end it and then maybe start again.

Into the Spider-Verse did right about a multiverse story that the live action ones haven't: it did something new. It didn't rely on nostalgia and hang on old favourites. They gave us something new. Admittedly, it was something new taken from the comics, like Spider-Gwen and Spider-Ham, but they were new for theatre goers. The average theater-goer didn't know who Miles Morales was. They didn't know about Spider-Gwen, or Spider-Ham, or Spider-Man Noir. Sure, Into the Spider-Verse had little references to stuff we knew, like Dancing Tobey, but that was a quick gag, not the main hook. Heck, it was new for comic readers because they were new interpretations of those characters. Miles, Gwen, Spider-Man Noir, etc. They're similar to their comic counterparts, but they were very different. Hell, Peter B Parker is the kind of Spider-Man we've almost never seen before. And yet the live action ones are more interested bringing back old faces for a "cheap pop" to use a wrestling term. I was so happy to see my man Charlie Cox in No Way Home, because it signaled we'd see him again in the MCU. But his appearance amounted to nothing to the storyoverall.

One of the many problems that I had with No Way Home was that they rushed the story.Look at something,Aunt May's death didn't had any emotional weight is because the audience didn't connect with her.Because they made the bad choice of making her a sex symbol instead of a caring and loving aunt.Also I think that the multiverse story ,especially relating to Spiderman is watering down Peter Parker's version of Spiderman.

So I am happy to see you point out that the problem is not the multiverse, it's how studios have been using it. The thing with big franchises today beyond just the multiverse is you hear people say they want it to 'recapture the feel' of what came before. Star Wars, Halloween, Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters, Jurassic Park, Terminator and so many more, now Marvel and DC are all about doing that, whether its sequels decades later or cameos from across the multiverse. The thing is that they mostly recapture only surface level things, literally something we've seen or heard before, whether its a character or a weapon, a vehicle, a one-liner or a piece of musical score, the stories around them almost always fall to the wayside. The stuff we've seen before like the Millennium Falcon, Michael Myers, Proton Packs and lightsabers, we liked because of the stories they were first featured in, that's why they worked to begin with. They weren't glorified or held above the story as some iconic thing, they served the story, stories which became iconic and thus they became iconic too. The mindset now with 'recapturing the feeling' is often in truth literally bringing whatever that popular thing was back no matter how awkward or shallow it may be. The multiverse is so often the same 'remember that' feel only more egregious.

The real problem is the whole concept of multiverses in the first place. They are an easy cop out for a writer who lacks the creativity to work their story into existing canon, but also lacks the follow through to create their own unique universe. They are fun for us to imagine, like you mentioned, but they will always fall short when adapted to screen because studio execs simply aren’t as creative as we are and don’t care about the source material.
@Chris-lu4vm

I mean yeah every film is only impacted by a certain amount of people in marvel. Every movie only follows so many patterns to flow into the next Mcu film. They don’t have time to care about actual creativity and they never will. There’s a reason the Spider-Man film is doing so well, because when a good film stands out it’s being compared for the rest of marvel and it’s too bad, but essentially it means we’re gambling whether the 1 in 6 films that are good will be the next one. No one knows

The biggest problem I believe is actually the failure to properly utilize the multiverse. I mean, with No Way Home being as successful as it was, people started rewatching Andrew Garfields Spider-man movies and realizing he was actually pretty great and was royally screwed over with bad writing, yet Sony has has nearly two years to green light a new movie for him to properly give him a real trilogy. I honestly think it's early to tell. What we've seen so far in the MCU is just snippets of what the Multiverse is. The MCU is introducing new characters while slowly building the Multiverse. We'll probably get to it in Kang Dynasty and especially in Secret Wars. The Multiverse is definitely happening, but for now it's more in the background, so to speak. I'm sure people would complain if the Multiverse had more spotlight too. Let them introduce new characters so then we can see their variants in the future.
