We decided to land on a frozen lake to find some lunch... Then witnessed some of the magic of general aviation and the beauty of New Hampshire's mountains and lake region.

Every year the Alton Bay Seaplane Base (B18) in New Hampshire becomes the only official airport in the continental United States with an ice runway, which attracts pilots from all over to the small community of Alton on the south shore of Lake Winnipesaukee. Learn more at bit.ly/AltonBay
It's perhaps the quintessential example of the unique and awesome destination experiences only general aviation offers, and it's super accessible in any type of aircraft. It makes a great $100 hamburger or an excuse to visit from thousands of miles away.
Also, since flying yourself is such an awesome way to travel, I tried giving this video more of a travel #vlog or travel video vibe than my previous flight vlogs. I'll probably alternate between the two to showcase both how exciting things in the cockpit can be, while also highlighting the incredibly unique lifestyle experiences aviation offers like this. It's basically the affordable (and much more fun) version of private jet travel. Let me know what you think in the comments.
----------------------------------------
I've been flying since I was 16 and at age 19 flew around the world by myself in the same 1981 A36 Beechcraft Bonanza I still fly, becoming the youngest person ever to solo circumnavigate by aircraft.
Now, I'm sharing all kinds of aviation adventures with YOU! Ride along as we explore the world from the air and get a close up look at some of aviation's best flight experiences and destinations.

love it to death, great job! Definitely include more of the comments about things like not knowing the ATIS, not really caring about the winds on final because you can see the windsock, etc. Your videos do a great job communicating the freedom and fun of flying. That's gold. Haven't had the guts to bring the Lancair to Alton Bay yet, but considering it. I've hit Katama and Cape Code grass strips with it, but haven't tried the ice yet!
@mattguthmiller

Thanks, I'm really happy you like it! And I'd say go for it, it's really not as bad as you'd think -- going in I wasn't sure what to expect from the ice, but it really wasn't much different from landing on a snowy/icy/slick runway.

It was awesome! And it's really actually pretty easy, just make sure you go around if you're too high/fast/float too far. (They did just close for the season unfortunately though.)

Thanks, I'm happy you liked it! The restaurant is Shibley's at the Pier (it's the only one right on the lake, otherwise you have to walk a bit), and you can get all the latest info at facebook.com/AltonBaySeaplaneBaseandIceRunway/ but unfortunately they just closed for the season since it's been so warm.

Never being able to remember ATIS info and wind info -- definitely relatable. When my students ask me the ATIS info, I just pretend like I don't know so they get it themselves and not be lazy. But in reality, its usually because I forget it too. I'll never let them know that haha.
@mattguthmiller
@mattguthmiller 7 лет назад
Haha yeah, I usually just note whether there's anything to be concerned about or what runways would be acceptable with the wind and then forget everything else

Shortly before receiving my PPL, I was out and about with my CFI when he told me to set up for a landing. Was a bit puzzled, as there was no airport in sight. He pointed and exclaimed up to the right. I still didn't follow. Then I saw a plowed out area on Lake Sunapee, Georges Mills, NH end to be exact. Was a still day and my first ice landing was uneventful.Looking back, he will be remembered for his subtle but spur of the moment changes in flight which I believe made me a better pilot. My CFI died while walking back to fly home after just finishing what was to be his last last lesson and last flight. A man that died doing what he loved most, right up to the last moment...

If you look at the take-offs of other planes, you will find a Cherokee that BADLY needs to get washed underneath. It's completely BLACK. Either he hasn't washed in 50 years, or he's buring LOTS of oil.

That's actually pretty cool... not everyday you get to land on a Ice Runway!!! Nice Video!!! I love how the Terrain warning came on during approach, the system probably think you are trying to land on water :-P

Nice. BUT, you are a midair collision waiting to happen. Poor traffic scan with way to many totally unnecessary obstructions attached to your windows. Don’t worry though. You will never see the plane that hits you because of all the blind spots you’ve created.

Beautiful videos my friend. I do wonder about one thing though. I also got my pilots license at a young age, I'm now 25 and have been flying for 7 years. I own a 2012 tecnam 2002 that runs on automotive fuel, because basically, I can't afford the avgas fuel for my many flight hours. So how in the world are you able to pay for the 15 or so gallons of avgas and a fully glass instrumented 6 cylinder bonanza, when you're still studying at MIT? Do you have sponsoring deals, a job on the side or do your parents help you out? Cause my plane basically renders me broke ,and I'm a fucking air traffic controller and earn a shit load of money...
@mattguthmiller
@mattguthmiller 7 лет назад
Thanks, I'm happy you like the videos! Basically my only real income at the moment is from a couple sponsorships and a lot of speaking engagements that I couldn't get to on airline flights between school and everything, so I only make money by having the Bonanza and it's just enough to cover the cost of the Bonanza.
@cageordie

It's weird and cool to watch you doing that in a plane when I've done it in a boat. Not with ice on the lake though. On a quiet weekday we came down the bay at about 50mph in a Donzi and went to the same restaurant. It was a few years ago, but I think the runway would be close to the no wake zone.
@mattguthmiller
@mattguthmiller 7 лет назад
That's really cool, it's a nice area, and I thought the restaurant was pretty good too. It definitely would have been nice if it were a little warmer though, maybe I'll have to try it in a seaplane in the summer.
@cageordie
@cageordie 7 лет назад
Not as cold as usual. Someone flipped on the takeoff run yesterday, or at least it was on the news yesterday, lots of surface water. A truck removing a bob-house (fishing shack) went through the ice too. Lucky you got in before it warmed up. Very good video, by the way, you are very professional both the flying and the video. It would be a great place to visit with a sea plane. The main body of the lake, The Broads, can be quite rough, sometimes from wind and other times just from the crossing wakes of so many boats.

Is that not an unusually large amount of oil/exhaust/fluid on the underbelly of that Cherokee at the 6:00 min mark?

Thanks, glad you like it! I usually use Epidemic Sound. Specifically the music in this one is (not necessarily in order cause I don't remember what's what) You Are the Solution, I Have a Party, The Traveler, City Lights 1, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Holiday Edition, and Acid Waves.
