Ever since I heard this album for the first time I haven't stopped listening to it, and it's crazy how you can obsess over a song for days even after listening to it over and over again. Some songs that didn't grab me that much at first and that I wouldn't listen to again grow on you after a while, even more so when you become aware of the concept of the album and the role of that song within it. It's impossible to listen to Hard Times and not feel the weight of this song and every time I hear it I cry until I die haha I loved your reaction and connection to the album, so honest!

thoroughfare is actually a really sad song in the story of ethel cain!! it’s about her being kidnapped and taken to california but she developed stockholm syndrome

It’s crazy when you realize Ethel isn’t a reliable narrator and she was actually kidnapped by Isaiah and is so broken she creates the false story that’s told in Thoroughfare.

Adding this to one of my favorite reactions to Preacher’s Daughter!!! I absolutely love how immersed you both were while listening.

Family tree was my favorite track on first listen. I believe in the chorus, she’s referring to the white horse and river as being saved. A white horse is often associated with a white knight whisking a damsel away, and the river being a symbol of baptism and washing her clean of her past sins (also probably a metaphor for sex)

1) in western nights “shades of black and blue” refers to him beating up other people for her not him hurting her physically 2) for family tree. death (as in war, famine, pestilence, Death) rides a pale horse. also her father (the preacher) is dead before the events of the album eta: there’s a little bit of an unreliable narrator thing that’s evident in thoroughfare. in ethel’s missing person poster it says she was last seen getting thrown into a truck by an unknown man and in the song it’s romantic “you said ‘baby don’t run i’ll take you anywhere’ so i hopped right in” next up is the willoughby tucker EP and then after that is preachers wife and then preachers mother

46:00 Willoughby is actually the guy from the house in Nebraska who is his true love, Logan is the one who treated her like shit

The whole album itself is masterclass, especially considering it was mostly produced by Hayden (Ethel Cain is just a character that Hayden portrays through most of the music, the next two albums will be going over Ethel's mother's life, and then the grandmother's). A 'fun fact', House in Nebraska is about the one true love Ethel had when she was younger, Willoughby. The 'House' in Nebraska that she sings about, is actually just an old abandoned house that her and Willoughby would run away to whenever they needed an escape from their absolute tragic lives, they would pretend is was a farmhouse in Nebraska. In that song Ethel's lamenting about how he left town, leaving her alone, and she's simply hoping that he's well and doing okay. Later on, in Sun Bleached Flies, Ethel goes back to 'And I'm still praying for that house in Nebraska', meaning how even after her death, all she ever truly wanted was what could have been a truly happy life with Willoughby if he had never left. Logan was killed in a shootout and Ethel was forced on the run, which is where she ends up meeting Isiah. Isiah was the abuser she sings about in Western Nights, Thouroughfare, and Gibson Girl. Once you take the context of Ethel not being a reliable narrator, you realize that Thoroughfare is actually just a romanticized take on what actually happened, due to Ethel being rather naive due to her rather sheltered life. It wasn't actually a romantic gesture of Isiah asking her to come with him, he actually kidnapped Ethel and took her to california, then started pimping her out for drugs and money. And then obviously we know what happens after that. It's honestly all very tragic and dark, and I could go on and on about all the lore and story behind Preacher's Daughter, it's a very hard to listen to album, but as someone who has a lot of religious trauma, it's very cathartic for me, maybe for all the wrong reasons 😅 My personal favorite tracks from that album are actually: House in Nebraska & Sun Bleached Flies, simply because they tie into each other after you get the full context of everything. And then Hard Times came and smacked me in the face. The first time I ever heard that song, it absolutely broke me, especially as someone who has that trauma myself, it's a very accurate feeling that Hayden puts into that song. Wanting to be able to let go and leave that person and situation, but when it's someone in your own family, it only adds another layer to the complexity of just how truly terrible and traumatizing it is, especially as a child. I'm nearly 26 now and am slowly being able to face that trauma and move on from it. Hard Times has a very special place in my heart, and the fact people like Hayden exist and are able to put our thoughts into music is truly something else. TLDR: Apologies for the long novel above, I just really love this album and can relate to it for multiple reasons, and I appreciate the both of your takes on it. Seeing how quick you were to pick up on the meanings behind the lyrics was very refreshing. You gained a new subscriber. 😁
