You always impress me when you take personal responsibility for when something goes wrong. And it's not a broad-based "the buck stops here." It's been this went wrong, this was my role in it, there was a bad result, I screwed up and I will learn from it. That is such a healthy and mature way to be. Trust me, there are people more than double your age who haven't learned that yet. I'm sorry for your and Allyson's loss.

It hasa lot to do with testosterone. Men have plenty and it allows us to criticise ourselves and others without going into a hissyfit and try to slander and destroy everyone else like you f3males do. Its the way God meant it, afterall.

don trump dude honestly I think you don’t get the message she’s trying to convey here She trying to say that he’s a very mature person for being able to own up to his mistakes and try to learn from them to not do it again but unlike him there are people older than him supposedly being more mature than but in actuality they can’t own up to there own mistakes and ownership to problems they made While you are talking about god here which has nothing to do with the message at hand you sound like a complete idiot (in my opinion) because your trying to put men on a higher pedal stool than women which is now upright wrong men and women are equal in my eyes they may be different physically but every one is different mentally Some women are smarter and more mature than men after all But I think most people agree that your one of the retarded ones that like to shame other people because of there gender So next time you come talking trying to criticize another gender don’t use god you’ll only make your argument dumber And also testosterone has nothing to do with it :)

Please remind Allison that the heart is a wonderful home... just... Whenever you lose loved one, you are just remodeling that home, so you can add more space in that home... Time will redecorate and color the new rooms, making those new residents who move move in more comfortable. The heart only grows from heartbreak... If you can focus on the heart renovation during this hard time, it can make it easier to make it through the hard pain... I hope this makes sense... Love to you.

I personally would avoid getting battery animals. As much as I would like to give the animals there a better life, the industry profits off the "heroes" who want to give animals a better life. For each animal purchased out of battery cages or slaughterhouses, that industry gets money with which it will buy a dozen more to put in the one you bought's place. The only time I'd say it's okay is if the place actually got busted for animal cruelty (if only) and the animals are looking for a home. Then it's not supporting the industry, and the damage isn't outpacing the benefit, and I would gladly take them. Or if the facility is giving them away rather than making you buy them.
@oddytea6945
@oddytea6945 4 года назад
@@Aviivix I think it depends on how you look at it. You are right in the facts but I for example would rather make life better for those individuals bc the large scale industry isn't going anywhere and I would try to work more politically for animals rights while bettering the life of a few in the meantime. Same with for example lab test dogs. But to each their own. Your way of thinking is also a valid and important one.

Morgan, thank you for your pervasive homesteader presence. Love the podcast, as well as the team up with Austin! We ate our first goose the other night. I split one with a neighbor, and my very picky husband even liked it! It reminds me of beef, very dense and rich. Delicious! Like a goose, a hen can become a real pet, I have one of each and they means as much as a cat or dog to us. My goose guards my house and is at peace only if she sees or ear me nearby (obvioulsy mistaking me with a gander as she lets me pet her), and my hen keeps wandering around, scratching (and therefore cleaning the moss out of our grass) and always wants to sit next to us when we re in the garden (sometimes tries to get on our shoulder but it's NOT okay). When I was about four years old, I befriended this pig on a pig farm over the summer. He recognized me and just seemed to have extra fun with me around. Unfortunately, my pig-bro was tagged for slaughter that fall. It taught me this and that about life, death, where pork comes from and in a way also about loss and grief. To love someone or something is to accept the eventual pain of losing that someone or something, which is why you should only love responsibly. I am sorry for your loss.

I worked on a farm that raised 1600 layers on pasture and at the end of the season when we had to bring them in to keep them out of the cold they would inevitably start pecking at each other due to boredom. The strong would survive and the weak would pass. Then came spring again and back to pasture they went and all the chickens that were pecked at would heal and do very well. Eventually in about 18 months they were all harvested and sold as retired layers mainly used for making broth. Absolutely delicious. So yes there will be ups and downs to raising livestock but it’s cycle will work itself out. Good luck with your farm. I think you and your family are doing a great job.

I really like how you make clear the distinction between pet and livestock. You care about your livestock, making their lives the best they can be, but you know their ultimate purpose and how the story ends. A pet serves the purpose of companionship, and you love it differently. Just because you don't *love* livestock like a pet doesn't mean you don't care for it. I hope you and Allison heal and learn from this and can grow an even more amazing flock. :)

I’m so sorry for your loss, and wish you the best. Me and my family have a backyard flock that I’m attached too but there was always one chicken that I especially was attached too. She passed away just a month ago, she wasn’t even 6 months old.

Livestock and pets... 2 different things. Treat them all with respect, make them handle able, but they are there to produce food. That's especially important for kids, but adults too. Best to isolate a chicken with wounds, until they heal. It happens. Sad, but there is that line. It hurts to lose livestock and pets. That's reality. None of gets out of life alive.

Very true, to loose a pet hurts. You cant let bad chicken behavior happen.. It never ends well when you fail to take action. If you didnt feel bad I wouldve been suprised. Youre a good man.

I know how you feel. I lost my one and only silkie after loosing her rooster and her son and she was the sweetest bird ever. She loved hugs and cuddles and would never leave my side. She hatched out my 1st and 2nd batch of chicks and was a wonderful mother. When she was taken by a mink my heart was shattered. She meant so much to me and I miss her every day. And it’s hard to not see her run out of the coop every morning but I understand now that I need to have a line between livestock and pets. But when you raise a chicken and spend so much time you get attached. In the end I know how you and your wife feel and I just want to say that it gets better.

Ducks were the first animals on our homestead too. After almost a year of learning how to raise them, we got an incubator for the eggs. Now we got about 50 pekin ducklings in our brooder and I ordered a dozen chicken hatching eggs from ebay for our next animals. Thanks for all the informative videos!! RIP Henrietta

So sad. We raised a small group of ducks for a while and came to the rapid conclusion that we wouldn’t be able to eat them. We lost one of the ducks to a breathing issue and it was heartbreaking. Eventually we gave them away to someone who would treat them well. We still miss them. Watching your flocks helps fill the void.

I lost my rottie earlier this year, and my heart is still healing. I loved her so, so much, but of course she passed. I went through a lot of grieving, even considered taking my own life over her. No one understood. That dog was the only living creature that showed unfiltered, true love to me and didn't fake it. My family at that point was mentally abusing me, belittling the fact that i had depression, was self-harming, ect. Im 8 months sober from self harm, but every once in a while my heart tugs at the thought of Ruby, and if my family would have been happier if i had died instead of her.

I understand you Catlover 801 and my condolences to you...just lost my little poodle friend,the one in the picture, 2 months ago and am still crying . Missing that true love as you described , 15 years of utter joy suddenly gone forever. I guess must wait for the pain to cease and just focus on the happy memories...XX

Yo, thanks for breaking it down like how you did. I love your intro because there is a difference between pets and farm animals. Im Nigerian American and when i went to Nigeria for the first time and lived on my Grandma's farm, i was like omg! Animals and our relationship to them is so complex! Thank you for your video! And very sorry for your loss

So sorry for your loss, it can be really hard to draw that line, especially if you're spending time nursing them back to health. Also impressed that you are always willing to take responsibility when you know there is something you could have done differently (we won't say right or wrong because let's face it, this is a learning experience). PenG procaine injectable can be used in chickens with a fairly wide safety margin- just remember if you *do* use any oral or injectable antibiotic that you should throw out the eggs for 10-14 days . It sucks but you don't want to play around with antibiotic residue. All the best for your family, and again I'm sorry about Henrietta- it's clear you all cared for her and did the best you could.

I'm sorry for yours and Allison's loss. Its never easy, especially when you are attached and trying your best to take good care and heal them. Regarding the roosters - when you have more than one rooster in a small flock, there will often be a more docile one, mostly because the more aggressive roosters are dominant. Once you take the dominant rooster(s) out, the docile one will then become the dominant one, so you get a complete change in temperament.

This appears to be such a case, where the rooster would have needed more hens - at least 4 to 6 - for things to work out. As a rule of thumb: a rooster with too few hens means trouble. A flock of roosters may work sometimes - as long as there are no hens around anywhere at all. The breed and the circumstances may determine how much trouble you get with roosters.

I was born and raised on a farm. It is never easy to see. So sad. But, we are human. And, btw, animals have feelings too. You and your wife are very caring people. You can lovingly care for your animals and still know that you are not perfect. Don't be afraid to try again. Maybe, not too soon, but try again. Sorry you lost that beautiful bird. For some reason, some roosters are very mean. Try a different breed maybe?

Sorry for your loss. I've had literally hundreds of chickens from 1983 until now. There are those you become very attached to, and those are always the ones that usually die! We are at about 18 right now so I am hatching this spring. Some of my birds are 7 years old its time. I do keep Khaki ducks, Muscovy and Chinese geese also among large livestock.

Chickens are just like that. You need a full complement with all the birds knowing their place in the hierarchy. Becky's homestead is a good place for chicken husbandry; she even wrote a book on it. She's nursed many a sick chicken back. Appalachian homestead is another good one for chicken matters with chicken saddles etc. Best of luck with all your little beasties.

Sorry for your loss. I had to put my 10+ year old cockerel down 2 days ago, that was the only chicken I have named and I'm going to lie it was hard putting him down as he had been apart of my life for 10+ years. Don't let it affect you or Allison you both tried your best and you have to draw a line on how far you can take caring for a chicken, you could quite easily take it too the vets but you'd end up spending hundreds of dollars on a chicken that can be replaced for $10-$50. Take care and keep up the good videos! :D

This is a good video. I don't name my chickens. I put colored anklets on them and call them by their color. I give them the best life, best food, best shelter. But.. I raised them for eggs and meat. They have a job as do I. You did a great job on this video. Every thing you said is absolutely true. Susan NW Georgia

I am so sorry for your loss. If it interests you light brahmas while huge can be some of the most gentle roosters out there. They can also defend their flock fairly well as they are nearly the size of a small goose

That’s really unfortunate, I raise backyard ducks but as pets and I would be devastated if something happened to them. I lost my first duck who was named Rupert but I found out that he was a she after “he” was gone, it was a stray dog that killed Rupert and let’s say I spent a week crying. What everyone told me was that I gave Rupert the best duck life I could.
