Now the word "quarentine" creates a reaction every time I hear it!

I would really really check to make sure you’re doing that nitrate test right. Shaking the bottles for the full 30 seconds and then 60 is really important.

Sorry about your fish dying. I recently bought some fish and a medium sized snail. I was told the snails do a good job of keeping the tank clean. However we’ve noticed less and less fish, and no cadavers. Until we saw the snail eating a dead fish and later found another small fish skeleton just shy of an inch. Do you think this snail is hunting and eating the fish?

I know this is old. But what if oxygen was too low? Or choked on gravel?

so the goldfish died because they ate too many snails ?

Sorry about your goldfish :/ With those ramshorn snails for every one you see there are like 10 you don't see. What I would do is get a few weather loaches. They can handle colder temperatures and they are excellent snail hunters. You gotta make sure you have a secure lid because they are excellent jumpers. I have kept my Ranchu with these pest snails and other pest snails for a little over two years and have never had a problem. That doesn't mean it can't happen. Beautiful Ryukin tho! Its going to look great when it grows up!

Thanks for the kind words. With our open top fast fish will always be at risk jumping out, which is why we've switched to the Ryukin. Love your Ranchus btw.

Maybe they choked on the plants. Or maybe the snails introduced a disease.

Well, I was definitely expecting this. You should've read up on Goldfish before you got 3 of them.

I'm curious as well? I can't see an issue here that would've caused these deaths except for lack of a lid? I have like 50 goldfish in a 90 gallon that's massively filtered and they're entirely fine. 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 0 nitrates and no plants.
