Good for you being a man of your word! Shows you are a real man and we don't have enough of that this day and time. Hand shake are fist bump this day and time still as good as a contract.
First, total respect for being a man of your word. You did the right thing and it will come back to you in ways you never dreamed. Second, I am really impressed that the topsoil guy was so close on his estimate. Two truckloads (2%) sure isn’t anything to complain about, that’s for sure. He know his business and was also fair to you in terms of what was paid and the job was done professionally. So it’s a win-win and you covered half your costs! Way to go!
Just an off-topic sidenote to start thinking about... property security/privacy. With your awesome transparency comes property/equipment safety security concerns. It's probably time to start considering a pretty robust, and stylish fence/barrier from the road so nobody can mess with your stuff. If i were you I'd start 2 or 3 rows of hearty pines and then a fence along the road. And lastly a remote controlled gate. Make the gate wide enough and far enough back from the road you can get semi's in with your "toys" haha. Unfortunately it's the world we live in where you have to do these things but it'll be better to be proactive instead of reactive on this front. Just my 2 cents as i want y'all to thrive...rock on man!🤘💪🇺🇸
Glad to see the pond coming full circle now. I can remember when I had mine installed 8 years ago, it was an exciting time. Now I enjoy it daily for the view and wildlife that it attracts. Great choice for your lifestyle, your growing family will appreciate it for a lifetime.
ADAM, sometimes, justifying the the cost , doesn't even come into the equation of living life to the fullest, which can provide benefits and enjoyment to yourself and others! Enjoy living! Life is short!
Good stuff Adam I'm glad you stuck to your word. I'm a retired home remodeler and some of the customer's that I've had...well it's amazing I still have hair! There are a lot of honest people out there that don't feel they have gotten a good deal unless they cheat their contractor out of making a profit. Great video, thumbs up.
Here in Nova Scotia there is a ton of greedy and unreliable contractors.. We are planing on building another house and are so glad that we can do it ourselves. Finding somebody is already a challenge but finding somebody that does good work and charges a fair rate is really difficult.
First off, love the music selection for the videos. And I agree, it’s absolutely amazing and impressive that he figured by eye that close. I really enjoy this whole process that you have allowed us to come along with you and enjoy. Keep up the great work
Great video. "Man of my word". The quality of your character has been fully shown over many over your videos and that is a description I would have given you if asked. Good to see quality people doing well and enjoying a good life. Also, the expertise of your operators was on full display as you see them making great use of the time afforded between load and getting that backside looking awesome!
And then there are the aesthetic Adam, the value of your view at sunrise and sunset, priceless. Teaching your son to sail, fish wow brilliant value. You may even have some income possibly. Well done
Your pond looks great. I’m pretty sure most everybody has gotten into a project that ends up costing more than we figured. I think the sale of the topsoil was awesome for you to recoup some of the expenses. Great video
$10,000 for dirt 😳 dig up more!!! There's a store in our town named Dirt Cheap!! 😉 I'm truly happy for you & your family. You work hard!! God bless y'all 💞
Adam I believe you made the correct decision in selling that top soil. 😃 Anytime you can offset the cost like that, it is a WIN WIN!! Looking awesome!!
Thanks for continuing to include all the prices and costs in your videos. It's one of the best parts, and I appreciate the transparency!! Now, for the million dollar question.... will your sister with the pool, swim in the pond?? HA!
That is a hell of a good estimate! Did he measure the pile at all or just eyeball it? It all worked out great. Amazing that it paid half of your build. Great vid, thanks.
Decent and honourable to go with your word! As you say, great kudos to your contractor to 👀 the load to a 2% accuracy. A fine exchange in every respect. I enjoy your output from the over here in the UK. 🇬🇧👋🇺🇸
That’s pretty awesome if that one sale pays for half of the cost for the pond. $10k seems like a great deal for something that awesome and for all of the enjoyment and use you’ll get out of it. Betting you’re glad you followed through with the sale now. Way to put those accounting skills to work. Glad everything is coming along and God bless!
Good morning Adam loved watching all your pond building videos. I believe you'll really enjoy it. Hope the rest goes along easily. I do agree that waiting to see if you needed that topsoil would have been prudent, but I think you actually made the correct decision by selling it. Good luck the rest of the way. Take care.
As long as you’re able to come up with some dirt to cover your pond dam you came out great getting those sunk cost back. My pond expansion is almost complete and I’ve got quite a bit of clay and dirt left over. Probably just use them to shape the area around the pond more
Good for you Adam, it works out for you in the long run. Ponds are like a night and day difference. Looks great! Check your local fisheries for seeding and we got our pond stocked for free with brown trout for local fishing rodeos. Great memories.
10k for that soil, around me at least, is under 20 per cubic yard delivered. If you screen it maybe 32. So after cost he is likely profiting 20 to 30 percent. That's right where a business should be. If Adam had the infrastructure to sell and distribute the soil he may have profited an additional 5 to 10k, but the investment would never pay off. Why do business if it's not going to be profitable?
Possibly one of the best investments on your property, if you eventually start growing in the front yard, you have a water source for irrigation, then you have the priceless future memories of your growing family.
Adam keep in mind from what I saw they weren't all tri axle trucks some were only 10 wheelers which can be significant. So in the end you may have made out better.
Well done mate! Like you said: if that guy can eyeball that with that kind of margin, he knows what he's doing. Never mind the extra two loads, that's marginal. Building a pond is not a cheap pastime, but now you got half of it back (in one go!), it is not so bad. Keep it up!
A local here, guy is a millionaire, selling, transporting dirt, got a HUGE pit, but I think he lucked into some family acreage. Back when he started, mining permits, and epa regs were prob a lot easier to deal with.
Will be glad when you get back to the fire wood stuff. According to my time line from a year ago, You should be Climbing the trees with spikes and a belt by now, And felling them from the top down. Am ready to see you sell your first semi load of firewood to a retailer, With all the math and costs and profit at the end.
The real question Adam. Do you want to make a career change & be an equipment operator? Your eyes get so big with a smile when you saw those real size Tonka’s. Thanks for the content. That pond is clutch!
You’re are not wrong. After 2 days 10-12 hours each day in a skidsteer. And your just wrecked. At least I am. But for me. It’s a nice break from my wood shop. Getting side work to pay for a skidsteer makes it fiscally possible to own one for my purposes.
Remember your selling a swelled yd³. It's been fluffed when you stripped it. Your inplace yardage is only 12,000 yd³, so your truck count is skewed. Keep everything in perspective. (Swelled yd³ vs. bank yd³ vs compacted yd³) You have plenty of topsoil in that field if you need to barrow some. The only cost is grass seed.
I'd be interested in how the pond effects the tax assessment and homeowners insurance in the long term. Your initial costs may not be the only added expense. You also may be able to contract with your local volunteer fire company to provide access to the water in an emergency.
I just want to say how jealous I am. I wish I had a piece of land like yours and I could build a pond. Any thoughts on a sprinkler or some kind of fountain in the swimming portion? Looks awesome.
good deal right there, he has to haul it back to his yard and then throw it through his screener with some junk dirt and clay and sand, he’ll make 2000 yards of nice product and then sell it at 25 a yard plus a delivery fee to whoever, so he’ll make 50,000 plus you just returned his check back to him plus another 3000, that guy made 63000 off your property.
Plant an orchard, some future timber trees, or maple sugaring trees instead of just reinstalling grass. I think it would be a very worthwhile investment to have a grove of black walnut, white oak, sugar maple or fruit trees there.
I assume the 10k is going to be taxable income. Can you take the cost of excavation off as a cost of sales ? "Yeah IRS.....I didn't even break even on this deal, and have this huge mud hole on my place to boot".....ahahahaaaaa
I'm curious about what the transition will be between the grass you mow to the water. Will there be rock, weeds, grass, or other? If grass, than will you mow it with? Cause you most likely don't want to drive into the water.
Just curious how much a pond increases the value of your property? Like a $50k garage probably increases the value by $50k since you already have a garage/shop but does a mature well kept pond increase the value over the build cost and add long term investment value? Where I live you can't just build ponds like that.
I love the thing. My only complaints are the engine breaking is extremely unforgiving. It will lock up your rear tires in 2 wheel drive going down a steep hill. The gear selector can be tough to get into gear if you are on any sort of slope, and the throttle response is still a little spongy. Probably will end up getting a clutch kit in it at some point. Other than that it is a blast to ride and does everything I need it to. Who knows maybe we’ll be plowing snow off the pond with it
