After 10 months of travelling Europe in a motorhome with our kids, we have decided to buy a base in Ireland. We fell in love with this ruined farm, and the plan is to renovate it & create our Irish off grid Homestead.
Please follow along on our journey.

What you found looks like an old horse cart harness. The reins would go through the rings maybe. the old guy next door would know. what a lovely man.

Finding ‘the man’ for the job, that is what the Irish pub was invented for! Yes drink is taken but the business networking that happens is fantastic.

Sam doesn't drink. 8 years sober! Networking has to find a different path for us and fortunately, it has as Sam has done some work locally as a joiner, so he met other trades! 😁👍

@theirishhomestead does he play golf? That is another good place. I fecked my back up completely, so couldn't swing a club, so I had to use the pub. We came to Ireland for 3 months in September 1999, still here!

New sub here. Very exciting to watch you film the beginning of your new life. Right now subbed at 9.14K subscribers and binge watching your previous vids. By next year subs will have tripled! I am of Irish heritage living in Michigan, US and love your appreciation of the people and natural landscape. So much work ahead but how amazing to see what you have already done! Ohhhh! A static is what we call a mobile home! I don't know much about Ireland, but can you put in winter veg in some planter boxes? It would give you a head start while you're waiting for your landscape to grow back. Winter squash, leeks, onions, and broccoli would be useful if you're into sustainability. You have slews of huge rock. Why not make your steps out of rock with some packed gravel around it? Just a thought.
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 7 месяцев назад
Yes we keep toying with making some no dig beds for winter. Bec is going to do that once we have some good weather. 👍

My oh my, the gravel makes such a difference! Having your mobile home will make all the difference. Keep all the wood for the future wood burners, as it is amazing how much you need as winters are very harsh. Well done , I so enjoy seeing your progress. Looks like neck saddle where the reins would’ve been fed through. Loving your journey. We did the same 7 years ago. Bought a derelict ruined barn in north west Scotland. I felt your pain Becca when the digger dragged the soil away. Ours had to be done too as it was also a bull field. We found lots of crockery, metal bits and horseshoes. Kept everything we found. Regret not trawling through everything though but we didn’t have the time sadly. We’re organised now and mainly been growing a garden from scratch. We also got our digger guy to scrape out our duck pond at the same time too. It’s been like watching ourselves all over again. No regrets. ♥️

Through the magick (sic) of RU-vid your video popped up today. I watch several US based homesteading channels (ok, I'm a Yank living in Germany; they give a vicarious taste of home.) I'm interested in seeing how you make a homestead out of your land. So far I see many common elements. Many US homesteaders start out in camper vans, then mobile homes which I think you call a Static. Then either renovate an existing structure or build. I recognize your ambition and will be keen to follow.....and I did it. I subscribed.

@helenstewart2085
@helenstewart2085 8 месяцев назад
Hard fill is stones and rocks but not crushed as fine as yours, house and garden are on the side of a rise, only place for the vegetables was beside a old loading bank that had hard fill applied around it, but big stones had been used, similar to what you have been digging out of the barn. When we did one renovation removed the old wash house it had 3 different layers of cement under it. They must of just kept on adding cement to build the floor level up every 20 to 30 years here in New Zealand.

I grew up in a house like this with a stanley range and open fire providing heat for the house. Theres a reason that house now has central heating. Ill never forget waking up in winter freezing cold. Please get an oil burner if only just for the morning or as a back up.
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 9 месяцев назад
Yes we are considering oil as a back up. Still researching our options as it was important to be off grid but also important not to be cold! 😁

It's an amazing step for you and whole family, and sometimes it will be hard, but I believe you'll rock it! Thank you for the wonderful pictures of the rising sun, to let us see the progress of creating your homestead! All the best for you and everytime a reason to smile! ☘🍀☘ And that Leather-Piece, which you found, seems like a piece of a belt for cows. But may be I'm wrong. Nevertheless don't throw it away. 😊 Greetings from the North Sea coast of Germany!🏖(We got 30°C. the last days)

Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I keep all the things we find and will use them somewhere in the house. I think it was some sort or animal harness for pulling a cart maybe but not sure yet. Thanks again for your support.

As Sam said we feel like everyone has a different opinion on what is best to do with the outside walls, and the inside walls & the floor 😆 We would love to get some advice from people who really understand these old stone cottages in such a wet climate. Any advice is much appreciated.

Loving this Irish adventure. I live in the uk and would love to move over to Ireland and get a house with land. Would you be able to do a video on the legal stuff moving to Ireland? Can any British resident move there or do you need a family in Ireland? Also a bit about buying the property and land and your experience with it would be great. Wish you all the best, Neil
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 9 месяцев назад
Hi Neil. The UK ,& Ireland have a special agreement so you can buy property here just as an Irish person can buy in the UK. To obtain residency here it takes 5 years unless you have family. Sam has Irish citizenship so it's only 3 years then for me as his wife. Buying land/property is straightforward, just put down an offer & see. Nothing here is set in stone though until contracts are exchanged. Gazumping happens often. Then just instruct a solicitor. Hope this helps but I'm no expert. Becky.

Good morning, Was it complicated bringing pets into Ireland? A few years ago they had quarentine and they were not allowed.
@theirishhomestead
@theirishhomestead 8 месяцев назад
It was fine from the UK as long as Rabies vaccination is up to date & they have had tape worm treatment at least 24 hours before. You will need an AHC (Animal Health Certificate) from a UK vet now if entering into ROI or an EU pet passport. It's very tricky, though with a passport, as if a UK vet writes anything in it, the passport is then void. So I have no idea how you would do it that way.. I think if coming to Ireland an AHC is your only option not cheap at £150+. Hope this helps.
