FACT CHECK: Trident 2 D5 missiles DO NOT have a failsafe to detonate it once it’s been launched. Once she’s been launched, there’s no coming back. Also can you imagine the radiation fallout of 1 missile with four nuclear warheads exploding over the ocean or land? The explosion itself might trigger all four warheads to explode. Just for reference the nuclear explosion at Hiroshima during World War II was only 15kt vs the Trident 2 missile carrying four 475kt warheads or 1.9 Mts combined. A 1.9Mtn explosion would be more than 25% larger than the most powerful nuclear explosion the US has ever conducted which was the Castle Bravo explosion. That explosion created a fireball 70 miles wide & contaminated an area 7000 square miles with nuclear fallout.
There is always that one dumbass in the comments that has to give some "fun fact" or "fact check" that no one asked for or cares about. It's just a TV show bro....not everything will be 100% accurate or true.
Why do people have to be serious when watching movies Why do people want to act smart!!!! Even if you know the details you are giving away infos that can be used!!!! Just watch the movie....a#$h*&e
Exactly! They canceled this great show because it was exposing the corrupt and criminals within our government. They always cancel great shows like these when the enemy is not foreign but domestic.
@@thinkbeforeyoutype7106 ...the irony of your comment paired with your username is obviously lost on you. Also, what the hell do you mean? The Jack Ryan series, the Jason Bourne series, Shooter, and plenty of others had similar tracks on corruption and abuse of power within the U.S. government.
Andre Braugher absolutely murdered every fucking scene he appeared in this series… People talk about Denzel Washington, and rightly so, but they fucking sleep on Mr. Braugher because he’s a hell of actor who knows his craft, both Stanford graduate & Juilliard School graduate… The man is a heavy hitter
Yep! They canceled this great show because it was exposing the corrupt and criminals within our government. They always cancel great shows like these when the enemy is not foreign but domestic.
It's nearly criminal that this series was canceled in its first season. And you can tell that they had plans for the series, where with the one episode where they were doing a (geological?) survey and finding, IIRC, rare earth elements in abundance on the island - showing that they could've formed their own country with their own resource export. ...I'm guessing "rogue ballistic missile sub commander threatening to nuke D.C. for a government that murders their own" (coughObamadronestrikingU.S.citizensoverinthemiddleeastwithoutdueprocessslashtrialjustbecauseheconsideredthemterroristscough) didn't go over well in the political climate of the time. And the fact that similar shows like "The Last Ship" went on to be quite popular just shows that this show probably wasn't cancelled because of anything to do with ratings. In fact, despite them citing ratings for the canceling of it... it was still pulling in 5.68 million viewers on average when the show ended. Hardly anything to scoff at. I guarantee you ABC continued shows that had far less of an audience like that.
They canceled it because it was inspiring of the wrong kind. It inspired people to question their government and that's a no-no. We didn't know it as well back then (10 years ago) but we do today. Back then it was just "Conspiracy Theory" to suggest there were powerful people seeking to change every worlds nation into a Chinese like Authoritarian state but not today. The Last Ship's enemy was the virus and not the government so it was OK to keep airing. It's surprising this show even got 1 season. Either it was filmed differently than pitched or someone at the US Federal Government censorship[ board wasn't paying close enough attention and this slipped through.
Canceled in the first season because IT SUCKED! Last Ship also SUCKED. Man, you are suck on 100% BS shows. I'm a bit touchy about Navy shows. JAG & NCIS Suck also, but c'mon, these dramas are about as bad as they get. Lazy writing, no research, with people and crews doing impossible stuff and every episode is someone saving planet earth. It gets old.
Andre Braugher is and always will be one of the great Actors of our day. Unfortunately Mr. Braugher Born on July 11, 1962 in Chicago Ill. Died on December 11, 2023 of Lung Cancer in New Jersey according to his IMDB page he was an accomplished actor who took his craft to new heights during his career. He was one of the good ones who will never be forgotten. God Bless him. And thank you all for the great remarks detailing his career. They say there is no better way to honor someone then by remembering there accomplishments in life.
Mr. Braugher was way too young. His full range of talent was not allowed to be exhibited, in passing much too early. His personality mannerisms & style were unique and especially memorable, as some other 'few' contemporary talents. God bless & keep you Mr. Braugher.

This was a great show. A big part of the reason was the calm confidence of the Captain, he and Benjamin Sysco from DS9 are two of the most bad-a-- dudes out there.

Wait so they’re missing 2 and he said they can’t go hide in the water leaving 2 crew members behind but when they fire the missiles they’re underwater 1000m from shore.
@@YukarisGearReviews what do you even mean by that? I’m talking about how he said they weren’t leaving without their missing crew members and then in the very next frame you see the submarine off shore under water.
They can't launch Trident on the surface, so they stayed in the bay but descended to around 50 feet depth so that the missile could clear the tube underwater. For whatever reason they didn't show this little process onscreen.
As others said... the Sub was not parked 'on' the beach, it was out in the bay.. likely far enough out that it could sit between 50-100m in the water. They likely were surfaced to retrieve crew, then when 'all hands accounted for except for 2' was spoken, they had already buttoned up and 'sunk' back under water, waitign for commands to either surface and re-claim the missing crew, or act.
For some reason, all these series had a bar where the whole town met. In the end, the same thing happened to this series as the 4400 became parodies of Lost.
@@patrickkenyon2326Absolutely. Only air launched weapons can be dropped inadvertently, especially by unwanted triggering of the safety ejection of onboard payloads, when available. But the weapon (air-launched bomb or cruise missile) will not detonate for fault of having been properly initiated with several safety barriers lifted. Modern bombers carrying their weapons in internal bays would need a longer and more complex process with several steps to drop away their payload in case of emergency, as opposed to a F-16 carrying a B-61 under an external pylon.
While they lack a self destruct measure there have been proposals made to install one. Especially since agreements signed in the 70s imply such a system would be desired. Nothing has come about so far.
@@florinivan6907nuclear gesturing is the specific feature and major bonus of the air-launched (manned bombers) leg of the triad. They can be recalled up until weapons release.
On contrary from ground silo you can theoretically launch from sub without code for that reason there are 5 keys on sub all over the ship and all must be turned simultaneously. Also i know its for dramatic effect but really this "self-destruct" ooops button is really dumb, there is no such thing on real missiles of would completely negate all security and made weapon unreliable because uf you can send signal that disable/destroy weapon enemy can do it too and neutralize you nuclear arsenal.
@@piotrd.4850 No the test launch is done on hot silo with codes and everything again the one silo cannot launch even if the want silos are in groups and another silo must validate the launch orders and turn the keys. There are videos explaining how it works in detail. Nevertheless its not like in film there is no big red button, and also there is no ups button once missile is launched its independent vehicle. Also like media loved to portrait WRONGLY no Trump cannot just go rogue and order nuclear strike that order also must be approved by joint chiefs of staff or something like that. Every step is independently double triple checked for exactly this reason someone going rogue. And on top of that launch crew can always belay order and are required to do it if they have even shadow of doubt also they can permanently disable silos if you try take it by force. Did you ever seen how old is that hardware? And for good reason because is self-contained system that cannot be accessed from outside and nobody know machine code there are few floppy disks locked in vault and that's it.

A MIRV missile can be fitted with a variable number of warheads down to one. It’s warheads can be sent to the exact same target or each to a different one, as long as not too distant altogether (for the same missile). So you won’t spread them from Boston to Miami…
The missile is designed and qualified to be able to carry 8 W-88s, though. At least in its initial operational capacity. Safety reasons, among others, may have caused it to drop since. In any case, most open sources for the last 10+ years seem to agree that this full payload is not used anymore. It should even have been declared in arms reduction treaties with Russia, if I recall correctly.
OK That is a Trident II missile; before it can "sing the song of it's people," it must burn all three stages then the post-burn vehicle must orient itself into its pre-planned deployment window in space. Once there, it will release EIGHT Multiple Independently-targeted Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs). The MIRVS will re-enter the atmosphere before detonating at their pr-programmed altitude with a 475 kiloton yield EACH. Flight time ~15 minutes. Launching strategic weapons is an irretrievable act; there is no do-over or my-bad. Like pulling the trigger on a gun, you can not bring it back. once it's away, all you can do is wait. Also, this is absolutely NOT how an SSBN strategic missile launch works. I can't stand it when the movies do ZERO research and just pull shit out of their ass. Lazy.
@@kennethjohnson4280 I f this was a truly Your job , then You should know , that given specific tools , resources and time any SLBM can be tempered with , canceling need for multi-stage authorization process. Thats why , for example , keeping US large thermonuclear warheads in Turkey is a very stupid policy , granted , they can grab them at any moment with easy.
I love it when keyboard warriors resurrect an almost-year-old comment in order to feel better about themselves. Yes given unlimited resources and knowledge, a government can reverse engineer the missile. but that is not what we were talking about here genius. Unlike what you would do I was not stating what I did to feel better about myself, I never sought out that position, I just ended up there as a natural progression of my career, and the fact I happened to be standing in the office when they were assigning people to the contract. Additionally, I had less than zero to do with designing the missiles I only worked on the support system, launch tubes, and security systems. So turn off your computer and head out to your fast food job before your mom gets pissed.
@@YukarisGearReviews well... Yes. no codes, only keys. The only thing keeping an SSBN crew (it would take the whole crew "Crimson Tide" is BS) from firing an ICBM is their patriotism and loyalty to the country. Unlike the other legs of the Nuclear Triad, the SSBN fleet can affect an independent launch.
@@YukarisGearReviews Look I did 20 years in the Navy and worked on submarine weapons systems for another 10 when I got out. No, they are sent an Emergency Action Message (EAM) that is authenticated by the CO, XO, and Weapons Officer. All must concur the message is authentic by verifying the code in the message. once that is done, condition 1SQ for strategic missile launch is set, and the submarine is taken to missile lunch depth and hovered. CO inserts his Nuclear authorization key, and the Fire Inhibit Switch (FIS) key is inserted by the Weapons Officer. I am not going to go into more detail as to what else is required, but no, there are absolutely no codes sent to the submarine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Ya6X36a1UIk.html
