Exactly, or the fact that self-harm can turn into an addiction, your mind never shutting off and telling you that you’re worthless, feeling pretty much nothing, having time being blurred so you don’t know what day it is or how long ago an event was, having no motivation to do the things you used to like, not being able to tell people how you’re feeling because you’re afraid you’ll hurt them, etc, etc.

And for some people it's a haunting feeling of guilt especially if you're in a toxic family. Sometimes people don't even take you seriously, thinking its a phase. Sometimes yes, but when you cry all the time on your doctor's appointment trying to scream for help but at the end being grounded for a year without any connection to your coping mechanisms and friends. The main reason I dislike 13 Reasons Why is because it sets up her suicide as her “winning”. She won because her suicide was her getting revenge on those that hurt her. Very much a “you’ll see, and then you’ll be sorry!” And that’s a terrible message to send about suicide! It’s worse than just romanticising it. It basically says she was able to get her revenge by killing herself. That’s not how it works in real life though. Also, they never once said she was depressed. Which is weird.

In the show “Crazy Ex Girlfriend” the main character goes into a period of depression and sings the song “Sexy French Depression” which basically mocks the romanticization of mental illness, in a black and white music video which cuts back and forth from her walking in Paris in a sexy outfit with a cigarette(the romanticization in her mind) to the reality of her laying in a messy bed in pajamas, binge eating, and not being able to get up. wasn't that about BPD?
@dandygardner9404
@dandygardner9404 3 года назад
@@colorbar.s It is and it is not. It's really about making fun of harmful tropes. In an interview the show's writers said they asked a psychologist to diagnose Rebecca, and the psychologist said BPD. They wanted to explore mental illness to produce positive representation but I think it led to stereotypical writing. The song sexy French depression is still relevant as parody, or as a take on the reality of depression (which someone can have alongside BPD.) It's pretty funny (I love the Sexy getting ready song and a boys band made out of four Josh the most.) In the show however Rebecca is first misdiagnosed with depression and anxiety before finding BPD so maybe that's why. I think their handling of BPD was pretty stereotypical, there's a lot of focus on the list of symptoms as opposed to writing a fully integrated character. People with lived experience should have been on the writing team. Anyway that's just what I think. Hope that helps. Have a nice one, and thank you for reading if you do :)

THANK YOU! Was about to write a comment about this, it's exactly how I felt before my diagnosis. When you start a conversation about wanting to die and the other person responds with "same lol", it just makes you feel like all of it is normal and that everybody else feels the way you do. Not true, and please get help if you're suicidal, it does wonders and I want you to live. Please.

After 13 reasons why aired, there were several cases where kids started buying tapes and attempting suicide. They wanted to do what Hannah did, several of these kids were unfortunately successful in their attempt. One girl that attempted to copy as well talked about her experience in a blog post a few years back. She said that " I never felt the urge to commit suicide until I watched 13 reasons why" and that "I wanted to get back at the people that made me feel like I was suffering, I was never suffering, I was just angry" she talked about how she actually realized what she did to herself and she freaked out and realized that she didn't actually want to die. She was very lucky, sometimes you can't go back on what you do to yourself.

exactly like it makes life so empty, and you know you should feel something, you wonder what's wrong with you that something that should affect you doesn't, you beat yourself up again and again for not feeling anything and the more you try to hurt yourself the less you can feel it. depression is fucking awful. i used to think depression was this cool thing that would maybe make people care more about me, maybe i'd have more friends if i was depressed. and then i basically thought myself into the hole of depression (although the process was definitely sped up by genetics and my parents) and now i can finally understand the ugliness of mental illness that no one ever really wants to confront. it's easier to imagine that sufferers aren't actually suffering, that the mental disorders making our lives hell are actually improving it, because hey- we're getting treatment and care and days off from work/school, right? fuck no, we get bad grades and unemployment and goddamn expensive therapists that don't accept insurance. we get messy houses and unwashed hair and the same clothes we've been wearing for a week because what's the point in looking good when you can't even look yourself in the mirror? not to mention how difficult it is to do things like just get out of bed; it's a whole process of either psyching yourself up or mentally bashing yourself, depending on how your night went and how much sleep you got and what you have to do today. you genuinely cannot see the point in getting up, and if you manage to- for which i congratulate you heartily- there's the hassle of getting ready for the day, which takes twenty extra minutes of just mental preparation. then there's the matter of food, which you're likely not hungry for (whether or not you have an eating disorder) and so you go on about your day, suffering in silence because of the emotional-distance moat and walls you've slowly built around yourself.

I’d also like to add, as someone who has severe depression, a romantic relationship will not “cure” you. I’ve been with my boyfriend for 5 years now, and at times my mental illness has put a strain on our relationship. He still supports me, but having depression in a relationship is a lot more than just one person crying and the other holding them and soothing them. It’s also frustration from your partner because they don’t understand how something so trivial could upset you, or you being so upset that you don’t want anyone to touch you. It’s HARD being in a relationship while mentally ill, not cute.

Another thing that disturbed me about 13rw was how Clay's issues were never really addressed. He had to see his best friend die in the accident he later blamed himself for. And THEN also Hannah kills herself which he obviously feels responsible for as well. And he goes off, listening to these tapes, and clearly hurts himself, repeatedly again and again, physically and emotionally. He has breakdowns, always bruised. He literally points a gun to his head and also wants to jump off a cliff, and it is...just brushed off. And there is no help for him. His mother only demand to keep the doors open. His support system is his own peers, many of who are 'guilty' for Hannah's death. It is clearly shown that he skips on sleep most of the time, skips meals and doesn't really study? But also somehow manages to have good enough grades to pass. So nothing happening in his life has real life consequences? Second season was a mess but I at least hoped, in the third one everything is going to be addressed, discussed and he will finally get the help he needs. But no, instead he runs around, playing a detective and is pictured as this scary unstable young man, and all that matters is a murder of a worst human being in their town. I don't think 13rw did good job at all.

Dear everyone who wants an eating disorder to "lose weight", Eating disorders arent the sad girl with mascara tears down her face sitting near the toilet. It's not the pretty blonde girl saying oh I just ate tee hee. Eating disorders are the person sitting in front of any object that can hold things, vomit on their face, snot and tears dripping down. Eating disorders are sitting in your room, thinking of any way you can stay away from the kitchen. Eating disorders are looking in the mirror and thinking how can anyone love you when you can't even control what you eat. Eating disorders are knowing that when you look at the scale in the morning, your gonna base your entire worth on that number. Eating disorders are stuffing your face with food until your stomach is stretched out and you feel like throwing up, and then hating every fiber if your being. Eating disorders arent pretty. They are a mental illness that a side affect might be losing weight.
@nivaxell6509
@nivaxell6509 3 года назад
Some people seem to think that having an eating disorder means changing out fast food with salad or throwing up from time to time. In reality (at least for me) it's more like a constant fight between knowing "I need to eat to stay alive" and thinking "if I eat I'm going to gain weight". This constant planning on what to eat, when to eat, if to eat. Eating something you didn't plan on eating or eating as planned and then still regretting it, just to replan the whole day. Just constantly thinking about food although you have other things to think about. Canceling meetups with friends cause maybe you have to eat together and food just isn't something that fits into your current plan. Fearing that someone might want to pressure you into eating. Fear or losing control over something you desperately want to have control over. The mental fight alone is so extremely exhausting...

Serious question for a moment: Would you say the way cartoons or kids shows ar drawn and stylised Does that put more pressure on your body image does it make it all seem more valid more real? Because I hear a lot of people argue, that e.g. the proportions that we can see in old Disney Films or Winx Club contribute to body issues while I feel like that never made any sense to me because it didn't affect me. So please give me your perspective

@@natnuss98 When I see exaggerated proportions (huge hips and bust, tiny waist) it honestly doesnt bother me that much. However, seeing extremely thin characters (lots of Tim Burton's characters) does trigger me a bit. Nowadays in my classroom, the sentence ''erase that, it gives me OCD'' or ''OCD check'' has been thrown around by every student at this point expect for me. It angers me when people think that OCD is a *quirky personality trait* and don't actually care about the fact, that it's an actual mental illness. My brother has severe OCD and has had it for 7 years now, it's so bad to the point that he can't even get out of bed before having to lay down 30 times again, which is why many times he can't even go to school, because he can't get down the stairs. I think anyone that knows about OCD, understands why it angers me when the people around me talk about it like it's nothing. It especially hurts a lot to me, because my brother actually not long ago tried to do a suicide attempt in front of me, and it was not the first time. It has become normal to say that one sentence, and I absolutely hate it.

I think ocd is probably the most normalised one, if you tidy your room someone will ask if you've got ocd, like no I'm just being clean, I usually respond with something like "if I had ocd I'd probably be screaming and crying over this" because I know it's a lot more severe than I would even know, Ive never met anyone with serious ocd but I know it'd be a lot more severe than most people think, I think that's the biggest problem is that people don't see these things as severe as they actually are, depression isn't just feeling sad, anxiety isn't just being nervous and ocd isn't just being clean. Sorry to hear about your brother, I hope you're both alright

I myself have OCD and I do have a friend who will in front of me say "I like ordering things, I'm so OCD" and then she'll smile at me like it's something we share. It just isn't. I don't relate to that. My OCD has been washing my hands so much that I glance down at my wrists and they've dried up to the point there's dry blood there and I didn't even notice it was bleeding, I was just going itch, itch, itch because the chemicals were so bad. Once I didn't switch off a light switch when a plug wasn't pulled in and the fire alarm went out on the theatre. It was a week after I'd stopped therapy and started getting better and I almost decided that getting better wasn't worth it if it was going to risk things like that, because what if it was my fault? Hearing people say that ordering things in order of colour, etc., makes them have OCD is just so upsetting for me. And if they really, genuinely think they do they shouldn't be joking about it.

Mental health issues have been romanticised so much that some girl at my school diagnosed herself with psychopathy. She thinks she's so edgy and quirky for 'breaking herself' and 'not feeling empathy' and 'tears not coming out when I cry', with all those shitty tiktok emojis. As someone who has struggled for a while with deteriorating mental health, it's not cute, it's not edgy and it's definitely not quirky. Being emotionally numb is terrible, and it can make it hard to function day to day. Crying is difficult for me and I've been picked on for not crying in certain situations, which is pretty fucking stupid in hindsight. And when I reach an actual breaking point and do cry, I'm ridiculed and invalidated, which doesn't make sense at all, so it's a damned if I do damned if I don't situation.

Another thing worth mentioning: how OCD has become so trivialised that for a lot of people it's just seen as a quirky personality trait. As someone who lives with OCD, the common perception of the illness actually makes it difficult to communicate openly about what I'm going through. For most people, especially in my cohort of teenage girls, saying "I have OCD" is about as casual a statement as "I had a coffee this morning." When I'm trying to explain to my classmates that OCD is a real mental illness and that *it actually hurts me when they use it as an adjective to make themselves seem quirky*, I'm told that I'm just overreacting and that it's meant to be a joke. This also means that I can't really talk about it to anyone or ask for help when I'm having an attack because of how it's perceived. I'm not really sure when the phenomenon of OCD trivialisation started, but I'd be really interested to find out. I love your work, Rachel. Sending lots of love

Based solely on my memory, I would say the late 80s/early 90s is when we started using "my OCD" to mean "my casual desire for order" as opposed to "my sometimes debilitating mental illness." Yes, I liked my CDs to have the printing on the spines facing the same way, and in alphabetical order by artist's name; no, that wasn't really because of OCD. It would literally be another 20 years before I figured out that that language was inappropriate.

As someone who's been diagnosed with ADHD, depression and generalized anxiety, it's not funny or a joke at all. People aren't overreacting when they say they can't just do the work or get up from bed. It's not that we're lazy. There' much more than to that. I remember trying to reach out to share my story in class, but the first thing people said was that I was overreacting or just acting for attention. There was even one person who asked, "Then why aren't you dead yet?" That says a lot about how mental health is viewed in society. Even people. who aren't alone, seem happy and successful can still possibly have depression. And if you have depression, you are not alone. You can reach out to others for help, and please do so before it's too late. This is what I want to say to others here, and this is what I say to others when they ask me why I'm depressed when I seem successful and happy.

I hate that the internet has made everyone think that anxiety is just being scared, being nervous or just fidgeting, these can be some habits of people with anxiety but it's not all of it. You can't self diagnose yourself with a mental illness or just take a quiz online and say you have it, you have to go to a doctor. I am diagnosed with anxiety but my doctor never gave me any advise on how to stop or deal with it, so I wanted to go see another one so I could get some better help, but my parents don't believe in mental health, they say it's not real. I've self harmed myself because of how stressed I am all the time, I pick at my hand until the skin is peeled and blood comes out, sometimes I enjoy the pain bc it helps me clear my mind and focus on it instead of on my thoughts, I also do this with biting my lips. I'm doing online classes even though we can go physically bc I'm too scared of my classmates. I can't talk to them, my head is too full and it hurts, my heart hurts and I can't breath when I step into the classroom, I can't focus on my classes only thinking about what I'm going to do at lunch because I have no friends and what others are going to think. I'm not going to go into details about my eating disorders bc I'm still too scared to talk about them and how they ruined such a long period of my life, taking me over completely and mostly because I'm anxious enough already and I don't want to relive the events that are that horrible time. I also have mental breakdowns and I get triggered seeing certain things, I have disorientation issues sometimes, even having suicidal thoughts at some point but no one believes me bc they say my life isn't hard and I don't have a reason to have this turmoil and all of these problems. My family makes me doubt if I'm just making this up, they make me think I'm crazy. I don't understand what's so glamorous about mental issues, I have so much more to share but no one seems to care, to listen or to believe me. So the girls on tiktok and Instagram saying they have anxiety and liking suicidal posts when they're laughing with their friends at school, posting photos and stories of their happy families and being so openly joyous but when it's a trend they cut their hair and now they have mental health issues. Nine year Olds on tiktok are pretending to have anxiety just for their parents to buy them fidget toys (for me they don't work but OK) isn't okay to me. I'm not doubting anyone with their problems but these are the same people that made fun of me for being overweight (one of the reasons for my eating disorders, but hey it worked) and for being shy/not having many friends to having no friends currently, claim they have anxiety when they're the ones that caused mine seems hypocritical. Sorry for rambling but no one seems to listen to me. Anxiety consumes my life and my being, it's not fun.

I sincerely thought about my depression and focused on all the bad things it did for me and how long i had been dealing with it. I started to picture what getting better would look like and i really wanted that. It was weird because i didnt realize before how "comforting" i found being depressed and how it was stopping me from improving. I wish they would show that more in tv/movies. They often paint depression as this "inevitable, beautifully tragic" thing and RARELY ever show people getting help for it or getting better in a realistic way (i.e. going to therapy and using techniques learned there as opposed to finding someone who finds ur depression beautiful).

The thing is though some people use humor to help deal with the very real depressing thoughts they have. And it is implied in this video that artists aren't allowed to make art based off of their experiences of mental illness. I guess everyone thinks that if an artist is mentally ill their arts has to be ugly. They aren't allowed to make beautiful art. Nothing beautiful is allowed to come from their mental illness because God forbid random people MAY decide they want an illness now. There are both sides to each coin. And I think it's better to teach kids and teens how to use critical thinking than to start banning art that makes illness look beautiful.

The scene was too graphic and portrayed too much of what suicide LOOKS like, without portraying what it's meant to make you FEEL like in a respectful way... And they did this in a way that literally could cause trauma to its younger audience who watch to learn to cope with their mental health issues. The show is fine for entertainment, but don't preach that your here to help people with mental health and "start a conversation" when you are portraying a suicide scene in such a hands on fashion... Its truly disgusting.

I've never self harmed but I've had s/o's and family who have so seeing self harm scars is triggering for me too (not nearly as triggering as for people who have self harmed, but still) even thinking about that kind of thing makes me sick. And knowing that it inspired copycat suicides after the episode aired.

This is what Heathers did right. I feel like other movies and some shows weren't trying to romanticize mental illness, but the fans ruined it. Heathers is different because the main character is the one against glamorizing suicide. Everyone throughout the movie was analyzing and romanticizing Heather, Kurt and Rams 'suicides'. Heather Duke calls Martha's suicide attempt her "trying to imitate the popular people and failing miserably". Heather McNamara justifies her own suicide attempt saying "Well what about Heather and Kurt and Ram?" Not to mention how everyone brushes off Dukes bulimia and just says it's "so '87". Veronica isn't like them. She doesn't romanticize or brush off any mental illness. She's worried about Martha Dunnstock and stops McNamaras suicide attempt. She tells her parents, who were seemingly unfazed by all the 'suicides', that teenagers didn't want to be "experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabits". Heathers is a great commentary on society as a whole, and I'd really recommend watching it. Okay, veronica did fake her own and multiple of her peers suicides, but they were all because of JD. She really did try to stop her peers and family from ignoring or glamorizing mental illness.
@spookyspirits4462
@spookyspirits4462 3 года назад
I completely agree. After Heather Chandler's death everyone was talking about how the 's*icide' finally gave her depth and character beyond "airhead b*tch". The issues and horrible nature of it was overlooked and dismissed, to the point where her s*icide note was passed around the classroom, described as "beautiful". The audience can fully see how ridiculous and wrong this is, because they know it wasn't a suicide. She didn't have those issues. These people were so caught up in the romanticized death that they didn't further investigate it. This is also mentioned when Veronica tries to stop JD from murdering Heather Duke, and JD says he doesn't need her to forge the note because people don't actually care. He mentions that people will 'take anything they can get' when it comes to s*icide, that they're happy to jump to romanticize the situation.

I haven’t been able to see a professional yet (though I should be soon), and even my people who said they have experienced it said that I likely have it. Also, I just want to say that, while I agree with your post, you also have to recognize that the teenage tumblr users are also part of the stigma related to mental health. God. 13 Reasons Why always makes me so angry. Depression (for me) is a mental illness riddled with guilt; so why would anyone who is depressed BLAME THEIR DEATH ON OTHER PEOPLE? When I was in high school, people found out I struggled with my mental health, and then they would message me at night while I was avoiding my insomnia about how they’re depressed and anxious etc. I would then tell them who my doctor was, who my psych was, which psych made me uncomfortable and lots of other useful information. Because not everyone's depression looks the same. Comments like this piss me off. No one is like you, and just because you have depression, doesn't mean everyone's depression looks like yours. Everyone's experiences differ and everyone digests them differently. I've had depression for 10 years and I'm diagnosed with BPD, and I'm just as angry at my bullies as I am at myself. It's a neverending, constant back and forth between blaming myself and them. They fucking ruined my life. If I killed myself when I was at my lowest, I very much would've blamed them for it because of the toxic and delusional mindset I and many other people with depression were in. I wrote a whole novel about how bad it was, but it was too long and personal. Regardless, as the video says depression isn't pretty, but I have to add, it can make you a bad person. I know at one point, it made me one, and I admit it. There were times I blamed everyone but myself just because I couldn't live with hating myself so much. Yes, that's a thing, it's not pretty, but it's true. I hated not only myself but everyone around me, and I blamed whoever I could. I try to be as good of a person as I can be now, but believe it or not, depression can make you selfish in more ways than you realize, and certainly not every person is like you. When I was at my lowest, I wanted to get back to people just like Hannah did. No, she might not have been a good person, but neither was I. Depression makes you ugly. Welcome to *mental illness manifests differently in anyone*.

I just had to cut off private communication with a recent friend because he could only communicate by talking about how sad he was or how much pain he was in no matter how much I told him I wanted to know more about him than that. Once, he literally went through a whole range of emotions like he was imitating a bipolar episode through text and he even used emojis to represent that. He's so impressionable and obviously not neurotypical, so I have no doubt he just thought that would be the same as expressing himself and his emotions. Making mental illness and sadness a trend confuses neurodivergent people who are just trying to fit in

My problem with the suicide scene in 13 reasons why is that it went against absolutely everything experts say on how to portray suicide. Artistically it was beautiful and emotional but I do think it was done it that way mostly for shock value, especially since they changed the method since in the book she overdosed. (or at least to my knowledge it did I haven't read the book myself) I more so hate-watched the show cuz if I'm gonna criticize something I want to understand what I'm criticizing, But after that scene, I had to immediately turn it off and I haven't touched the show at all since. Bizarrely would have made even more sense in the show with her parents having a pharmacy but there we go. The route they ultimately went down was so wrong and triggering though i don't even know where to begin. That scene is the only thing ever to have triggered me like that at all. For people like me who struggle with self harm or suicidal thoughts it was frankly far too dangerous to show. Only kept watching and watched season 2 because my stupid gay ass had a massive crush on one of the actresses even though by then i knew better that it was not something i could safely watch really.

This is just advice on what you wrote. I don't know what it's really like for all of you in reality, so in the end it's for you to decide if you want to do this: You did mention she has some mental issues too and your group might be a support group for each other, however if she keeps dismissing your feelings and keeps talking like that she's not helping in any way. You have to change something for her to start reflecting on her own actions and words. Tell her straight that this isn't in any way OK or helpful, it makes you all even feel worse. It doesn't make you feel more normal or better but you feel hurt and misunderstood. If she doesn't want to accept this you will probably have to take a break from your friendship because 1) her words make you feel worse and worsens your mental state, and 2) she might also start considering what she said to you and your friends. She might be able to grow out of it and come back more mature than before. I believe it's important to communicate these things. She might think it's OK but it isn't. So you should tell her how you feel about her actions to improve your friendship, mental state and your growth. I wish you good luck and I hope everything will turn out better in the future 💗 Take your time but if it all just feels too wrong you should take action and tell her.

You should ask her if she wants the pain that comes with it. I dont have DID but i know a lot since i got intrested in it. She should maybe think about the fact that you cant get away from these alters. There are percecuters who can suddenly front and god knows what they will do. (Percecuters are alters who has stored a lot of trauma, this can cause them to hurt the body or possibly others so the abuser can't.) DiD is terrifying. You can live with it but it is very hard. This is coming from one who has only heard about the consequences, not lived with them.

I hate when people use “I’m so depressed xd” when something happens, as a “joke”. I have been struggling to understand my feelings, because I think I may have depression. (Not diagnosed, and not self diagnosing, I *think* I may have it.) and them saying that makes me even more unsure and also makes me feel like I’m overreacting.

I have ADHD and it's not just hyperactive it's not being able to focus not being able sit still for long periods of times it's having to come back after someone told you something and saying "what did you say do" it's not fun. I have ADHD and depression it's not fun I can sleep at night because my ADHD is having my mind going fast instead of slowing down then my depression is making me think all these terrible thoughts because I can't sleep I stay sad all the time. It sucks having to take meds every day.

you can be depressed. depression and being depressed are two totally different things!! it’s hard sometimes when a friend says “i think i have depression” because something is going on, but you have to remember they may be genuinely concerned they have it because of how society portrays mental illness. it’s easy to get really upset and mad but sometimes you just have to look at where the other person is coming from; there’s usually no malicious intent. have a convo with your loved ones!! it’s okay to tell people how you feel!!! much love ❤️

I was 15 when I started chanting, “Emptiness is pure, starving is the cure” because I saw it on tumblr and thought it would be a “cool” way to lose some weight. Please don’t go into that stuff thinking that you are stronger than the ones you see on the internet, that you can somehow “control” it. 0/10 would not recommend. Definitely not worth it.

At 14, while watching Skins I thought that being "damaged" is edgy & cool and this type of personality somehow brings you closer to the romanticized adventurous portrayal of youth. Cut to me at 21 suddenly having a severe depressive episode while all of my friends are with me on the beach having a blast, while I am thinking about death with crippling tightness in my chest. And I can't connect with anyone, and I can't have as much fun as they do. So much for the edginess of mental issues. Mental Illness does not make you cool, it does not score you a cool boyfriend or cool friends. It does, in fact, stop you from enjoying cool things.

i also hate the casual jokes where people say “i want to die” at the slightest inconvenience. it was the punchline of 90% of the jokes on twitter at one point. at one point of my life that was objectively true, but it became a habit to flippantly throw around suicidal language that once i had treatment and was no longer suicidal i realized i was still saying “i want to die” in casual conversation when i meant “that’s an inconvenience.” and i was internalizing those words and feeling more miserable/catastrophizing everything. i had to actively change that habit because those kinds of jokes actually just perpetuated my misery. also because they’re jokes, people don’t realize that if they actually want to die or feel hopeless at any minor inconvenience, that’s a sign that they really really need help, and it’s not just a quirky teen phase.

I remember in high school there were so many people who constantly joked about how they were going to kill themselves or about how they are depressed or have anxiety. It was really upsetting for me to sit there and listen to those jokes and those words being thrown around because everyone glamorized it and saw it as trendy. Especially because I was struggling everyday.

Yep. I'd add romanticizing horrible personality disorders like narcissism (Fifty shades of Grey) and sociopathy (the Joker*) that teenagers for some reasons find cool. *Well, I'm not sure it glamourises the issue, but certainly justifies it in a way that I found way too disturbing. You could almost forget all his murders.

@user-ot7ue2yb2e

my least favorite glamorization of mental health issues was the big trend in the 2000’s and 2010’s where young cute men would sing songs about how they love girls who are sad and insecure. from “i kissed the scars on her skin i still think you’re beautiful” to one direction’s what makes you beautiful and little things. and the OG, “she looks so sad in photographs, i absolutely love it when she smiles” because being depressed makes you attractive. like i get the message that you don’t need to be perfect to be loved but the songs truly were just preying on young girls’ insecurities and honestly setting them up to be groomed into toxic relationships.

I remember being twelve years old when "13 Reasons Why" came out as did all of my friend group. A couple of my freinds wrote their own letters to the rest of us outlining "reasons" or ways we had wronged them. Looking back I completely agree with the idea that the show made such issues such as Hannah dealt with into a trend.

i legit do naawwwwwwtttttt get why people find depression so alluring. ive struggled w that shii since middle school (i just graduated hs) and its not cute or fun. i self harmed so much that my legs and arms look like a tic tac toe board (yes you can laugh). ive nearly been hospitalized 3x, i was dirty and stinky from days without showering, i gained a lot of weight cause one of my main coping mechanisms was binge eating, and there were times i didnt get out of bed for several days at a time. im inna way better place now but seriously the darkest time of my life should not be seen as aesthetic or entertainment purposes

People with fake depression who say they have it for attention make it REALLY obvious or tell it to everyone they have “depression” and are like “I listen to (insert singer here) !! It’s just so sad I can relate!!” And people with actual depression act like nothing is happening, act almost the same, it, may just be really feel like it’s hard to talk to people, to give their opinion or even just try to avoid anything, or feel less than everyone, but don’t talk about it and try not to make it obvious Personally I think that’s the difference. :D
