The chat about Tribal People Try carrot cake reminded me of the time that I volunteered at a massive Christmas dinner for anyone in our town who would otherwise be alone on Christmas Day. We had a great diversity of attendees, but a large portion of them were international students, refugees and migrants from backgrounds who had never celebrated Christmas before. Every aspect of the traditional British Christmas dinner was absolutely baffling to them, it was a hilarious way to break the ice! One guy took one look at the cranberry sauce and said 'why must you have jam with your food?!' and don't get me started on what happened when it was time to pull the Christmas crackers. All the British people dutifully criss-crossed their arms like it was the most natural thing in the world, whilst everyone else looked at us like we had six heads. Then we actually pulled the damn things and some people literally screamed in shock at the noise 😅 Jamie's right - often it does take 'outsiders' looking in on our culture for us to realise just how strange we are!

I'm an old white man from Wisconsin. I lived in China for six years, and had to adapt to the local culture. But, working as a "how to interact with westerners" consultant (including EFL, customs & protocol, CSR, etc.) a large part of my job was exposing my clients to "the way we actually do things". One evening I invited my Chinese colleagues over to my (very tiny) apartment for jambalaya (and assorted sides). They enjoyed the food (though my Sichuan boss thought it was spicy!), and were interested in the culture surrounding it. And then I noticed that 3 of them were missing. The entire apartment consisted of 4 rooms: Living and bed (separated by a sliding glass wall), bath, and kitchen. I walked into the kitchen and found the three doing dishes. My (now former) boss--owner of the company--still, to this day, brings up the day I told her to "get out of my kitchen! Guests DO NOT do dishes!" :)

I'm in America and used to work at a discount store that would get various international items sometimes like snacks & sweets from Asia & Europe, though we mostly sold clothes & home goods. I grew up watching lots of British television (in the 90s American public access channels had a lot of older BBC shows I guess they were cheap to license) so I knew what Christmas crackers were when we got some in years ago and I just had to buy a box. A couple years later I introduced them to my boyfriend & his family and now we do some every year at Christmas dinner. My boyfriend's head is a bit too big for the paper crown, sadly. Now sometimes Target sells them but they're hard to find and don't seem to have caught on much in America, last year we ordered some from Amazon.

@@adrita2606 One must assume, since this is what they are calling themselves, they do not find offense with the way they are described. And... you seem to set up a strict dichotomy. Can one not both live in a rural area and be part of a tribe? You say "making money off of them" as if they're being exploited. I think you may want to go and look at their video "The End of Tribal People Try". They're they ones profiting. While it's important for us to be understanding and compassionate when dealing with cultures with which we are outsiders, it does those cultures no good to be offended *for* them, when they do not see offense.
@sidrazahid2036
@sidrazahid2036 11 месяцев назад
@@adrita2606 it’s rather assumptive to say the channel is ignorant and offensive because even the channel owners English (which would not be their first language) might not be as nuanced. Secondly, as people from rural areas they can still be ascribed to tribes. In that particular country, tribal can denote people from different provinces that associate with the culture and language or even subsets within the tribes, most likely denoted by family name and heritage. One of the individuals in white clothes has a red/black/blue cap and shawl that is Sindhi. Thirdly, you would still find tribal people in urban areas but they would have come across mainstream culture. One might even say, titling the channel rural people could be construed as offensive as they are more likely Pakistani people of lower socioeconomic classes, leading simpler lives and not literate in international concepts. The channel should be appreciated for its wholesomeness and good vibes content, the participants definitely seem to be enjoying it.

Possible idea for a future challenge: Picky Eaters The boys each are given a random list of items or techniques their 'picky eater' doesn't like and are forced to make the best dish they can. The number of things I've seen people say they don't like are endless: tomatoes, mushrooms, mustard, pickles, eggs, cheeses, cucumbers, as well as cooking methods like charring, sauteing, pickling, raw, etc. There are some extremely picky eaters out there, especially young kids, that it's almost impossible to bring them to a restaurant or cook for them.

Oh, lol---I could send them a copy of my allergy pass. 22 items, and that was from just one test. OT: (At first, I thought that test was rubbish, or I was allergic to having stuff put onto my skin, but over the years, it has been helpful in identifying the causes of some issues I had when having too much of one item at once. For example, pepper is fine as long as it stays at the "normal seasoning" levels, but I better stay away from pepper sauce or similar pepper-heavy dishes. It'd been really hard to point out pepper as an issue as it is a normal part of my diet every day.)

When you photograph food, make sure to turn the plate and do the exact same thing again. There are rules in photography about where in the frame things should be happening that don't seem to translate to a plate of food that takes up the whole frame, but they're still imbedded in the way we look at pictures. Turning the plate will change the shadows and other points of visual interest, potentially giving you a much better photo for no effort at all.

So many points where Jamie or Mike would say "I never would've thought to do that," but fewer where they'd say "I could never do that." Same with photography. These pastries definitely look like they were made for the TikTok factor. I want an airy croissant, not a brioche; what's the point of all that lamination if it's just going to collapse on itself? The amount of chocolate in the pain au chocolat also looked incredibly underwhelming. If I wanted to get pastries for 5 of my mates and myself, I'd rather just get 6 individual croissants, and would probably be spending less, too.

The over proofing is just lack of care. The lamination failing due to the weight of the thing is something they would have known after they made the first one and they kept on making them. That says to me this is nothing but advertising. They are very cynically trying to draw in people who know nothing about pastry and just want the thing they saw on TikTok. Based on that alone I'd never spend a penny there and hope they go out of business very quickly. I'd much rather spend my money on a true artisan who cares about producing quality products.

I love Tribal People Try; Tahir is always touting the 'health' benefits of this and that and it's funny. Reactistan is also a great channel. Also, tomatillo salsa is fantastic! Depending upon the audience, I make it with either a couple of jalapenos or up to four serranos. It's amazing with chips or as a sauce (as in your instance).

I love Tribal people Try! They recently nearly had to leave RU-vid because RU-vid was being ridiculous about their channel and demonetised them. Thankfully all sorted now and they are back! Also, tomatillos (spelling?😂) are part of the Physalis family.

I've watched this video 3 times already. This is such a great format. I love how they all bring such different ideas to the table - from the latest tiktok trends to family recipes, from watching people try a new dish to trying a new drink, to giving a shoutout to the community and plugging things in the most natural, organic way. I'm also trying to think when this was filmed because its been a while since the US videos, unless they went on another US trip since then?

"It's my childhood, my present, and will be my future" got me all teary eyed lol. I don't have any family recipes like that and hope to change that for my future children so they can hopefully say the same thing one day.

Ebbers mentioned Club NO Minors and El Patio! I grew up in Houston, Texas, and first went to El Patio and Club NO Minors in 1990! I can't believe it's still there! My friends and I had wonderful times there. Now, I'm retired in northern Michigan, USA, where we get deep snow and long winters. I keep better in a freezing climate these days. No one wants to see me spoil. 🤣 Plus, I really enjoy zooming around on my snowmobile! Thank you for bringing us along, Gentlemen!

We have a very small Mexican restaurant in our city(well we have like 10 texmex places) but this one is special. The food is mindblowing compared to anywhere else. I do live south of Houston so ive had a lot of different places in my time, but this is the one we go to every week and bring all our guests to. They are such nice people.
