NASCAR on FOX is in the midst of its 24th NASCAR season in coverage. With the new 2025 TV deal NASCAR fans are locked in through year 31 with FOX Sports. With that being said it becomes more important for the broadcasters (who have already received large criticism since 2017) to improve. So, we need to talk about NASCAR on FOX… again.

@@Aventador3088 that doesn’t negate the criticism. The cameramen don’t need to take it personal if that’s the case. But it needs to be fixed and when they do they should be proud they got it right and bettered the sport. It gets frustrating when our constructive criticism to a declining company doesn’t get resolved and just like any relationship it gets fractured years of denying constructive criticism just becomes resentment.

The booth’s biggest problem is there isn’t a good split between the driver and crew chief/team perspective like there was with DW and Larry Mac. Having 2 drivers in the booth at the track is a great loss as someone with a crew chief perspective can give more technical and strategy insight. Larry Mac was great at this but I doubt he’d come back full-time like he was. That’s what NBC still excels at with having Steve Letarte in the booth. Bowyer is annoying half the time anyways.

Completely agree with all the points made but you missed a big one: the starting line up as the cars roll around the track. They show the graphics and play the music for the first 2 rows, then just stop to do an in-car interview. Then the graphics and music start again and they show a few more rows. Then stop again for another interview. Then throw the graphics back up with the music through row 7, stop and say here's the rest on the bottom of the screen while we talk some more. It's not just awkward, it's jarring. Bring back the 3D cars and the awesome funky early 2000s music. And for the love of god, announce the whole field. Even David Starr deserves a mention.

I don't mind it when old drivers like kevin harvick, clint bowyer, jeff gordon, etc are talking about the racel/old stories/joking around. What I have huge issues with is how a crash can happen and they not show us it, how hamlin jumping a restart doesn't get shown even after the checkard and it takes a whole race to be shown, how they cut away from stuff getting good. Those are huge issues

@Saldivinorum

@clangston3 they "left it at that" because NASCAR officials said he didn't jump the start. It amazes me to no end how folks that run no-budget internet forums and couch-officials like yourself think they can run an extremely complex process like covering a live sport better than the people actually doing it. I think people like yall just like complaining and I for one am tired of this channel and the constant negative Nancy's that apparently make up his core audience. If one makes focusing on what's wrong in anything, it shouldn't surprise them that their overall experience ends up being negative no matter what. The first 10+ years of Fox were great. It treated NASCAR with respect and had some fun with it as well. Now it’s treated like a joke. I hate when to go to segments during race action and go to full screen on the segment name for a few seconds, and that takes away from the viewer from seeing racing. The booth has gotten better this year, but overall Fox doesn’t present nascar like a big important event. Especially when they moved the pre and post race coverage to a studio. Hopefully with 3 new TV partners next year, fox will finally step up their game

That doesn't make sense. Worse ratings mean more ads? So if ratings are really bad, fix it by doing ads for 70% of the broadcast? That's not how broadcasting works, it's just ignorant cynicism that plays on people's negativity, like most upvoted comments on the internet.
@Dratchev241
@Dratchev241 4 месяца назад
@@lightfeather9953 uh... problem is, dude is correct. they are going to force more ads even with ratings down. Just like YT has been doing, they force more ads which causes more people to ad block (if you ain't blocking ads you should be. get ublock origin) which causes YT to double down with more ads which causes more ad blocking which causes more ads. network TV is the same, less people watch the more ads to make up for the loss. (reason more ads on tv networks is less viewers = less ad money so to make it up they push more ads to make the same amount they was before the drop.
@kpegc
@kpegc 4 месяца назад
@@Dratchev241 It honestly feels like this problem would be 70% solved if the advertisers would just make better ads. I believe any of pannoni or 80sCommercialVault's uploads would make great starting points, as would the TNN and ESPN NASCAR broadcasts here on RU-vid with the original ads kept in. If the ads we see every weekend were more like these older ads, I think maybe people wouldn't have so much urgency to skip them and perhaps even actually want to watch them.

They REFUSE TO HIRE PROFESSIONALS. TV production has every employee doing 5 thousand things, you cant just be a camera op. You gotta be a PA and a camera op. You cant just do audio, you gotta do audio and graphics. You cant just direct, you gotta direct and produce. Until that stops, and they bring all the booths to the track in person. It wont get better. This is a TV issue not a FOX issue. The people running TV hate TV they wanna be a youtube channel. So they fuck up everything work everyone to death and pay em garbage. You want a fix? MAKE THEM PAY TO HAVE BETTER PRODUCTIONS. Simple.

The only positive things I have liked from FOX this year were: -Highlighting driver pit crews -Harvick being in the booth and not making jokes all the time like Bowyer -Raceday stories (its sometimes fun to see some drivers lives outside the track) The things I don't like or need to be fixed: -Truck booth (keep Jamie Little on pit road and have people like Alexander and Shaheen being the lead) -Crank it up on pit road (it's fine every once in a while but when it becomes a weekly thing its irritating bc its more fun to listen to the cars on the racetrack) -Production and camera team (there's cameras around almost the entire racetrack no excuse to miss or cut from a crash) -Commercials (at least at some points in the race not just every 10-20 laps that's why I watch the international streams) -Cartoons (we have production days for a reason and they just don't look that good the other 2 series use them so just go back to real pictures) -Audio (like AutoRockinRacing94 points out playing onboard audio during crashes is infuriating unless they are actually showing an onboard) -Cringe segments/skits (just why I get maybe appealing to kids but its just cringe)

Zooming in on one car of the pack, then blocking everything in front of that car with the scoring ticker. No reason that can't be a top scroller like it used to be. Cutting away from action to show the leader who has checked into a different zip code Saying dumb things like they did this week like claiming that cars that short pitted "wouldn't have to wait as long for fuel.". Listen, neither the crew chiefs nor the fans are stupid. If there's 50 laps to go, and I can go 40 laps on a tank of fuel, that means I'm going to need an additional 10 laps worth of fuel to make it to the end of the race. From there it doesn't matter if I put with 40 to go, 10 to go, or anywhere in between, I still need the same amount of fuel to get to the finish. If that's roughly 4 gallons, then thats going to be like 4 seconds worth of fuel no matter how you slice it. It's a stupid talking point trying to make a mundane pit stop sound like strategic genius.

One thing I think they should do in regards to the graphics and whatnot is perhaps look into bringing back what they had in the early 2000s such as the portrait clip of the drivers next to a animation of the cars weaveing back and forth while going through the starting grid and bring back some of the music/themes also while they're at at. Just go and look up the starting lineup/grid for the 2002 Pepsi 400 or the 2001 Daytona 500 on RU-vid for examples, perhaps they could bring that style back as a experiment for the newer modern day fans later on this year, perhaps at Darlington, North Wilkesboro or Charlotte as a throwback to the graphics and themes back in the day to see the reactions of the fans watching on TV when it comes to the older fans alongside the newer modern day fans.

What I hate about Fox broadcast is how much of the race we miss. The commercials are endless, and now they give us this box to watch while they show team meetings, etc. I want to watch the cars racing not some team meeting or whatever. Less commercials and full screen.

I think the issue is the producers/director. I believe they are the same ones from years ago and they have an old school way of doing things. They haven’t adjusted to modern times. They also have no idea that split cameras exist. NBC is able to show 3 different battles at the same time, think back to Bristol 2021 night race, and Fox acts like that’s too hard to do.

It seems like they go to a commercial every 5 laps or 5 minutes depending upon the size of the track. I remember back in the 80s and 90s that whoever was broadcasting the race would quickly come back from a commercial if a wreck occurred. After maybe showing a couple of replays, then they would go back to the commercials.

A couple things not mentioned. Firstly, FOX is incredibly slow at switching camera angles when wrecks happen. There is ZERO urgency to get to an incident... not sure how that could be possible when there are multiple eyes in their studio. Secondly, they hardly EVER interview drivers who crash out anymore. It's incredibly selective. What a dumb way to miss storylines and memorable live moments, and what a disservice to fans, sponsors, and everything else in between.

I couldn't have summed it up better. Cartoons, bad camera cuts, zoom up shots constantly, and missing little details (like Martinsville winners) and racing action (like the wreck at the end of Sunday's race) have to go.

I, too, think Harvick has been good in the booth. When Mike Joy has a competent partner, he is still stellar. But thinking Harvick would solve the Bowyer Problem is asking too much. It would be easier to get rid of Clint altogether or swap him out for someone in the studio, either Larry Mac or Jamie. And while we’re at it, Mikey’s grid walk and his whole Gomer Pyle schtick is long past tiresome.

@kpegc
@kpegc 4 месяца назад
Or just bring back the SPEED Channel in its entirety. I think their biggest missteps were the reality shows and the overabundance of NASCAR talk shows, but I think they did everything else right. I think 2 of said NASCAR shows done really well (Race Hub and some sort of Inside Cup roundtable show revival) would be just the right amount of extra NASCAR coverage that doesn't feel overabundant. The SPEED Channel did a fantastic job of making the entire world of motorsports feel like a grand event that embodied the pinnacle of competition and visual spectacle, and covered it with a high degree of professionalism balanced with a lighthearted feel in a way that I don't think anyone else has been able to replicate. BTW, bringing back SPEED Center and Wind Tunnel (maybe with David Land as Dave Despain's successor?) wouldn't hurt, either. I believe the market has been begging for some sort of a SportsCenter like show dedicated to auto racing for over a decade now.

Just gives you more time to catch that driver. Not having to stare at the ticker, because that driver is only on the screen for 5 seconds. Cool story, you must like fiction... @@tankeater You're not a very good troll. And I know that's what you're trying to do because you're woefully incorrect on literally everything. You're just trying to get a rise out of me. 1. It's not top 10 at all times. Any time FOX puts up a graphic, the ticker only shows the top 5 and the graphic is placed below that. Try following a driver who isn't running in the top 10. Keep a mental note of how many times you find yourself thinking "dang it, show the next 10 cars" 2. It's not like I just got out the tape measure to determine how much of the screen the bar is actually using. It's probably closer to 15% if the pedantic tickles your fancy. But regardless, my point remains that that space is taken up in a very important part of the screen. Anything happening in front of the cars being shown is blocked out by the ticker that again, isn't showing me much useful because often, 6-20 have been replaced by cartoon image of a driver. Compared to the top scroller which, granted, only showed 3-4 drivers at a time, but continuously scrolled and didn't block much of anything. It doesn't make alot of sense to stick a fat vertical bar over the screen when broadcasting a sport that only has lateral movement. Not to mention making it harder to read.
@limprooster3253
@limprooster3253 4 месяца назад
@@tankeater Also, you do realize that it's the larger ticker that requires staring, right? With the scroller, I can very quickly read the 3 to 4 names at any given time and return to watching the race. Very similar to checking your mirror when driving. With the sidebar, there's a block the entire height of the screen that I have to scan looking for a specific driver.

In all honesty, just let NASCAR do their own camera work directing and then use the radio call by MRN to be the standard going forward. If I had to chose between the television call vs the radio call, I’ll go with the radio call since MRN and to an extent PRN does a fantastic job with their calls of the race. I hope, even though it’s a long shot of ever happening, that we can at least have a television call that’s on the same level of professionalism as what F1 currently has. Heck, promote Adam Alexander up to Cup and bring back Allen Bestwick. A booth of Alexander, Bestwick, and Harvick would be a great combo tbh.

Something you didn't mention that really bothers me is full screen cutaways that are completely unnecessary. If they want to talk to a driver at the care center, crew chief, whoever, I don't think we need the whole screen to take up the interview. If it's under caution, fine, but during the race? No, put that person in a PIP, just like we used to. As for the points in the video, all of which were valid, A lot of it could be fixed without any budget changes, so it's really a matter of execs being stupid. It doesn't cost anything for the camera guys to zoom-in less and it doesn't cost them anything to stop the random screen cuts. It's just bad management. That said, I do feel that them putting races on cable networks is a particularly bad decision, especially with more and more people dropping cable TV. If NASCAR wants to be considered a major sport, they have to be on major networks.

Casual NASCAR fan here, primarily WEC and Supercars. I partially disagree about tight shots, when applied correctly it can give great TV perspective on a cars behavior, giving insight into differences in comparative set-ups. That's the thing, broadcasters need to experiment with the how to apply them with ovals (and with any luck listen to feedback and criticism). On road courses the formula is usually the same: low angle, fixed or limited fov, set up pointed at the apex or a kerb or on the exit. Ovals could definitely present issues. I also think the super slow-motion shots they do need to be applied to more that just wrecks or outstanding moments, they can also be applied to the "mundane" parts of racing, like a tight shot of the leader nearing the end of a tire stint and comparing how well their tires are hanging on or falling off. Or tight, low, fixed, and super slow-mos of cars exiting 2 at Darlington (not sure if they do that already, if so, that's proper application).

I’m not sure what FOX is going to do when Mike Joy retires or they finally decide to move on from him. They don’t necessarily have anyone waiting in the wings who would be the right fit for lead commentary of the Cup Series. Adam Alexander is solid, but he isn’t someone who I think is the best choice to call races in the top series.
