About LUPUS: It may make Selena more likely to get tired and experience fatigue. That’s why long, excessive touring may not be a great idea for her She probably gets the best medical help possible, she doesn't seem to deal with symptoms that many lupus patients deal with; skin rashes, redness (this is something you can see) With that being said she may have symptoms, that we just don’t about I am not her doctor, you're not her doctor although I wouldn't say her vocal ability is heavily related to lupus, or not as heavily as her lack of training and lacks in technique.
It's a hard thing to definitely say whether they're related or not without knowing more about her case or having that expertise. For the rest of us, It's more about realizing it could be a possibility, not making definite claims. Whatever it may seem from the outside, I don't think it's fair to make assumptions about what her symptoms are or not, but it's still important to realize what could possibly be affecting her in making these kind of critiques. Even if she doesn't seem to deal with the same symptoms many lupus patients deal with, we can't really make that call and that also doesn't necessarily invalidate her specific diagnosis, symptoms, or struggle or if these possibly may affect her voice somehow. This is especially true given the vast research that has been conducted linking lupus to vocal issues in many cases. I also think it's important to center the fact that physical (even non-vocal) and emotional duress can cause issues for singers regardless. I'm not really a fan of Selena but it is unfair not to consider all the possibilities for her vocal decline. Again, I'm not saying it is a definite cause, but it's a possibility that should be factored in.

You can't really judge one person's specific case based off of the performance of others with issues that damaged their bodies, even if it's the same issue. They're different contexts, different bodies, different voices, different experiences of conditions, etc. Especially if the person being judged has/has had a condition like lupus (which is usually chronic anyway) that can have lifelong effects even if they recover. Regardless of if lupus has had an effect on her voice or not, it is true that she didn't naturally have an amazing voice or solid technique in comparison to other singers. So, even if we knew for sure that lupus affected her voice, could we say that ALL of her problems as a vocalist overall are due to it? No. Are there incredible vocalists who have dealt with lupus and other conditions that have potentially damaged their vocal ability? Of course. And speaking in terms of previous vocals and natural ability before her diagnosis, Selena was never an incredible vocalist anyway. But with something as individual as health it's hard to make claims that a condition should or shouldn't push a vocalist to certain levels without more case specific information. The only thing we can do is keep in mind that physical (vocal and non vocal) and emotional stress from a condition could possibly (not definitely) be hindering their vocal ability when we judge their vocals.
@@Ades2 Yeah, but she can still be taught by a licensed professional how to sing with her lupus. It may change her voice, but there are ways to sing around it while still using proper technique.
@@lovestadance For sure, though again if lupus has damaged her voice in some way, we don't know the extent, so it would be a little difficult for us from the outside to say what vocal potential she currently has or would have even if she worked with a professional. Working with a professional would definitely help. However, you can learn or have incredible technique but if the problem lies with the vocal organ itself there are some limitations (Julie Andrews and Mariah Carey come to mind with this). From the brief research I've done on Selena I'm also pretty sure she's already working with a great vocal coach (Stevie Mackey) and has been for a while, so I'm assuming they work on technique anyway. That's what makes me wonder if something else is the issue, be it possible vocal damage, a confidence issue, etc. Of course it could also just be that she's facing difficulty solidifying the techniques she's learning. Hard to say.

She didn't just lost confidence on her vocals she also lost confidence in her character...when she was younger she was very quirky, funny, and a whole mood now I feel like she's ready to cry when she sings
I've noticed that too , maybe it's because of the people she has sorrounded herself with .. you know back then she had DEMI , MILEY , THE JONAS BROTHERS and other people she grew up with , but I feel like she's sorrounded herself with negative people now or maybe it might just be the hate she gets from the internet that makes her uncomfortable.
I think it's more about being compared with her peers from Disney (Miley and Demi), especially when it comes to her vocals (which is not fair because Selena naturally doesn't have powerhouse voice like the other two). And from all that she has gone through, I really feel bad for her. I hope she finds her confidence. She's still young and has the potential to improve. At least this is what I believe. I wish her the best, whether in music or in some other field like acting, etc.
I think Selena's biggest "problem" is who she constantly gets compared to (ie. Ariana, Demi and Miley). And it's no secret why. They're the big four ex-acts. The other three clearly have these big voices that can do whatever they want with them. Ariana's known for her superior technique, Demi's known for her emoting and Miley's known for her raspy belting. Selena's strength is that her tone and breathiness make her standout. Unfortunately, she's usually be the odd one out. It wasn't until artists like Lana Del Rey and Billie Eilish came around that the sub-genre of "whisper pop" really became popular and widely accepted. If she came out as a brand new singer in the mid 2010s with a song like "The Heart Wants What I Wants", she would be much more widely accepted. Some of her best songs are when she doesn't try too hard to strain her voice (THWWIW, Fetish, Good For You, Rare, etc.).
I honestly blame her fans for that. Her fans are constantly comparing her to Ariana and Miley and in turn getting Selena dragged by Miley Stans and Ariana Stans. The same goes with Ariana stans & Miley stans because I see them start the fight sometimes as well
Billie may whisper for most of her songs, but she does sound good live. Her live vocals sound comparable to her studio recordings. Billie is also able to project when she needs to, like in her no time to die performance. Billie is just a normal singer, she’s good but not amazing. I cannot say the same for Selena Gomez
@@M4rteevee I’m definitely not trying to discredit Billie’s vocal abilities. But, from a production perspective, a lot of Billie’s vocals aren’t that powerful in a majority of her hit songs. From a technical perspective, Billie is a much more competent and capable singer than Selena has been over the last few years. But, they still aren’t gonna be belting out any power ballads in the near future.

@@aintnootherfan not sure she can, Lupus affects your lungs and breathing, it weakens the entire body, it attacks your organs, etc... and the medications she takes for anxiety, bipolar, etc... dulls her emotions, hence why she now seems to have this dead eye stare and look on her face. My mom takes lots of mental health meds and the light in her fades. I doubt Selena can ever tour or perform live again.

A singer without confidence in her voice is not a singer People were so hard on her for some bad perfomances that she lost her confidence and stage presence, and considering she has lupus i understand why she can't perform like she used to
oh gosh, i used to feel rlly annoyed cause i felt like she had all the resources in the world to improve when people I knew couldn't even pay for a single lesson, but after hearing her talk about her voice, I feel rlly bad for her. i hope she eventually finds her confidence again because all people can do better, she just needs to find a way to pick herself back up so she can go forward and become a singer that she's super proud of
To me it doesn't seem like she loved singing or music from the beginning. When she was starting out, comparing her to Demi and Miley(As the are the same age, generation, Disney package), the difference in interest in music and performing was huge. It almost seemed like Selena was forced to do it or something. It's just that becoming a singer seemed more natural and easier than trying to establish a serious acting career. She's more of an influencer who sings, really.

@@lilhonni for example Taylor swift is a singer-songwriter. For her its important to just sing her songs with emotion and convey the meaning etc. A vocalist is someone who really outshines a singer and can do all kinds of vocal techniques and riffs (i think, im not sure tho).

selena is a very strange pop star. she's not a great singer, nor performer, yet she is one of the biggest names in the industry. i think that comes from the fact that from what we've seen, she's a very sweet and down to earth person. she almost feels like a close friend cause she's so warm. selena was my big idol back when i was in my pre teen years, so she'll always have a special place in my heart. i guess i never looked at her as a big pop star cause for me, she always captured this sense of closeness and genuineness that other stars didnt have. i think atthe end of the day thats how she wants to be perceived; i dont think she really planned becoming such a big name, it kinda feels like all she ever wanted is to make her music for her fans and not for the stardom. thats why comparing her to any other pop singer is pointless. she's her own breed and its up to us to decide whether we like it or not
IMO, Selena is a huge star mainly because of how many hit songs she’s had. Her songs are catchy and singable, which is something other acts like Demi have at times struggled with. And Selena is constantly working too. Even at times when she’s not promoting an album she’s featured on some dj’s single which also becomes a huge hit. Add that to her high profile romance with Justin Bieber... that’s a pop star 🤷🏻♂️
Wow I genuinely love this... I agree, I've been keeping Selena in a very special place in my heart since I was very young ♥️ I'm gonna be honest... In her disney days, I liked her singing voice way better than Demi's or Miley's because she wasn't constantly screaming in my ear ya feel me? I always seemed to like her lower tone cuz i was able to sing along to all her songs... It was easier for ANYONE to sing along, and if you can sing along, u can vibe with the artist easier, i know it's weird 🤔
I think she has lost her confidence, and that's sad. Especially cause she gets compared to Ariana, Demi, Miley and other child stars with great voices. Not only that, she's also suffering from lack of confidence. People forget sometimes that anyone can suffer from lack of confidence and low self- esteem. It isn't about being rich or poor. in her ways of talking or presenting herself, you can tell selena is kinda broken. it's not that she doesn't care, but sometimes people are so incisive to scream your faults at you that you believe them. like not "believe", but really believe you can't do something. then, you find yourself not stopping to say those mean things to you because you can't stop, and no money can change you inside. at least is what I feel by following her.

I don’t think her problem is that her voice is terrible like most people think. Because in all honesty, she was never terrible, and anyone can learn to sing with training and practice. Not to mention she has had so many great performances, esp. before the Rare era. I think it’s that she has lost a lot of confidence as a vocalist. I think the anxiety of coming back to music after so long combined with her health issues and the rough AMAs performance really reduced her confidence. It’s sad bc she really has made and sung so many bops that many of us know whether we are fans of her or not. I wish people would stop comparing her to singers like Ariana and Demi, as not everyone is a vocalist and not everyone has crazy vocals. As Kelly said, it’s about how the music moves you. She has all the potential and all the resources. It's just a matter of building her self-confidence and working on improving oneself. Even the greatest vocalists still work with vocal coaches. No one is too good to improve, and no one is unteachable. She can get better with the proper teaching.

All it takes is social media, the Internet, and the ability to at least carry a tune. I be surprised when Selena Gomez has a vocal highlight like the belt she did on slow down live. That lead me to follow her career more and shook to the core to find she has a 3 octave range. I feel bad in retrospect for the bad things I said about her voice bc it may played a part why she lack confidence in her voice and not truly grow her potential into reality, that Kelly Clarkson show was sad and I was happy kelly lifted her up. I can say a lot of people need to understand not everyone is gonna be a Beyoncé, Whitney, Mariah, Aretha, jojo, xtina aguilera, etc. not every singer naturally posses a powerful voice or can do complex riffs/runs, the best thing a singer can do is have perfect pitch, great ear to musicality and a healthy, good technique.
I feel like in 2014 with her vocal lessons with Steve Mackie is probably her best vocals but I think she dropped him for whatever reason and that’s a shame cause if she kept having lessons with him she’d be a real good singer.
Honestly, I think people need to realise that whether you like Selena or not, her music sells. There are loads of amazing vocalists out there, who have the most boring, average and bland music and their careers flop. Selena works hard to do what she can with her voice and actually make her music listenable. She doesn’t have the best voice; nobody ever said she did, but she has the best music.

So she didn’t write her earlier music, but she MADE those songs classics. And because of that her fans have stayed with her for such a long time. I followed her singing career since the beginning and her lack of improvement was shocking to me. When I took singing lessons 30 min once a week I improved a lot in a few months and I was a pretty decent singer to begin with. I have no idea how you can have endless resources and claim to want to improve your singing, yet not improving much what so ever. At least in the first few years she should've been able to become fairly stable and stay on pitch. I just felt like her heart wasn't in it from the beginning. She liked the attention and singing was OK fun for her, but music was never her passion.

This honesty is so refreshing. I'll admit people go a little hard on her but frankly I do feel she's a little 'produced" and doesn't put in as much effort as other artists. As someone born in the year 2000, Selena was the singer/actress who had undoubtedly marked my childhood the most. I can still remember how I used to scream on top of my lungs her song "round and round"...I used to adore her. She was an icon and maybe could still be!
I think she’ll be remembered as an icon in pop. She ushered in whisper pop for this new generation before the likes of Billie popped off. She has great hits and is a really talented actress.could she have been much bigger and better? Absolutely but she was never trying to be. She’s a genuine sweetheart that has shown nothing but love to everyone, all she does is make her music make her makeup and keep to herself without bothering a soul.
I was also born in 2000 and she was my first concert! Who Says definitely made me cry to myself and feel like maybe I wasn’t complete garbage. My dad used to work with her cousins and I’d get autographed stuff. I was going to meet her when she came back home to TX to visit family but couldn’t make it but my family did! Such a down to earth sweetheart. I still have the autographs and even a picture of her with my family at Selena’s family’s home. There’s really nobody else quite like her.
I admit that selena doesn't have a powerful voice. But her singing touches her fans. She's my fav idol of all time and the longest person that I've ever admired. Her songs are all great. I hate when people drag her down just cause she can't belt high notes every 5 seconds. I love ari, demi etc. So much but selena makes catchy songs that fit her tone and her tone is also very unique and soothing. Nobody said she's the best vocalist but she never claimed to be and she can hold the notes in her range to create good sounds so that's all I need to be happy. If you look back some of the greatest artist didn't have the best voice. Don't like her voice or music? Just go listen to something that fits your taste better and stop hating on her...it should be as simple as that!

I feel Selena. I have a chronic and autoinmune disease. Is really annoying how my voice has changed and lost her power because of this, I even been doing vocal therapy for 1 year and half without many success. Sometimes people forget about her lupus. All the meds, flare ups, new symptoms affects more in our vocal chords than what you can get a picture outside. Also, all this affects your confidence. I keep supporting her music, because she loves doing that... its her way 2 connect with people and her feelings. I haven't stopped singing because I love it, even when I know my Vocal quality is not good anymore.
She has a distinct voice , u know it’s her when she sings , she doesn’t have to have this Mariah , ariana , Whitney .....vocals I personally think her videos and music are creative and she is an artist, her music touches BUT it would be a lot better if she was a lot more stable like in the past

I don't think people understand how lupus plays a HUGE part in someone's life. Even her talking voice you can see a strain to actually talk. I have JRIA (arthritis) and it pains me to talk sometimes and it's similar to Lupus in a way where it attacks the immune system
yeah i have ibd which is similar to lupus. both have major stomach issues and arthritis. it does put a strain on how you talk and how much you can do. even getting a lil bit stressed out can cause for people like me and selena to have a flare up

I don't have the biggest expectation for singers. Be on note and don't lipsync, but she does neither. Everyone is trainable to the point they are on key. She says she works her ass off and loves music. If she really loves music she would be practicing. The work speaks for itself.

I would say that's not nessicarily fair for artist to not lipsync. Constant singing like they do can actually damage their voice. Look at Mariah Carey👑 releasing an album either year to year or every other year with a tour in between which caused her voice to be very tired and raspy 1998 - 2001. But with rest she at her prime level again in the years of 2002-2006. So I think it's ok to lipsync to preserve your voice from being overworked.

I won't praise her low notes. She just naturally has a low voice. She doesn't have vocal techniques. However, I am glad she finds her style. Her music and vocal style sound so special and I couldn't find any replacement. She did improve recently that she is more consistent in live performances. I don't love her but I am glad she is still making music
@@kittykatsanchez First thing: Alto is not a voice type or Fach category. It's a choral part that can be sung by a Soprano, Mezzo-Soprano, or Contralto if they have decent lower registers. Statistically and physiologically speaking, the majority of women are a form of Soprano. Mezzos aren't as common as popularly believed and Contraltos are rare, period. Most Altos are true Sopranos but many lack technique and struggle in their upper register. This leads to many believing they're a lower voice type when in reality they can just put in the time and effort to achieve their potential as a Soprano. Selena's technique is pretty underdeveloped, no surprise there. Most Alto songs don't even go to C3 as most women can't either hit or project this note. Selena's C3 is not that unusual tho, she lowers her larynx to the basement and has no projection below an F3. It's not special, especially when you factor in operatic singers. Mariah and Brandy are Sopranos who can hit F#2s (with the aid of amplification of course). There's a difference between barely hitting notes and actually singing them as part of your range. Selena has no resonance there but yeah she can hit it. Anyone can sing the Alto line. In terms of actual voice type, Selena is a Soprano and not even the heavy or dark type.
Selena has truly lost confidence after her revival tour it’s sad honestly. But her revival tour isn’t lip sync tho lol. I’ve seen her go flat on a couple of sober high notes😕. Yeah such a shame people easily say that it's lip sync without looking to other performances from this tour. From watching many Revival Tour videos, I can say that this tour is 100% live.
Selena genuinely has a nice voice and although she isn’t a powerhouse vocalist or a singer that is technical in any way. She sings her songs and sings what she can do, I feel like there has been alot of hate on her bc she actually succeeded and some of their favs didn’t or aren’t as big. Some D stans on twitter drag Selena and say she doesn’t deserve to be bigger than Demi with her ‘poor’ talent. I’ve followed Selena for a while and I can genuinely say that she can sing but she just isn’t the strongest, esp in her new Spanish song she sounds even better than usual.
I understand some stans because there are a lot of artists better than her and they don't find success, and it's a shame but you can't force people to like things. Also the main problem is... girlie have been singing for almost a decade and her vocal improvement went from 4 to 5 and some of her fans don't accept the truth that she is not a good singer, she is inconsistent, lacks of support, projection, & the list continues. With all the time she've been in the industry is unacceptable for me that she still have the same "decent" vocals, like... baby you have the time & the money to pay for the best vocal coach, I DON'T UNDERSTAND.

what she means by working her ass off is that she does so much off camera, she doesn't just make music. she produces shows and movies, acts, she is the founder of her makeup brand and she does a lot of charities. so yeah she works her ass off but no one see that, everyone is so focused on bringing her down.
How can She be confident when all she does now, everyone has a negative point to say. It's very frustrating. It feels like even if she works hard for her vocals many will still judge. So... if she’s not as good as you want her to be, you criticize her, and when she starts working on her voice and shows signs of improvement, you say it’s probably lip synced... Selena just can’t win with you all, it doesn’t matter what she does, everyone is going to criticize her, and I’m sic of it. She might not be a vocalist, but her voice is gorgeous and she’s a very talented and hardworking woman. I honestly think she’s improved a lot, and as long as her technique allows her to maintain her voice without declining I’m more than happy. Now that I’ve let that out of my chest, I really do believe that her main issue is confidence. As you’ve said on the video, she’s proven to have a lot of potential. It’s the nerves what pushes her back. When she’s relaxed and feels confident she’s much more consistent, and her voice sounds freer, more supported and control isn’t an issue. But when the nerves come in... At the end of the day everyone’s voice is different, which means that some people are meant to be vocalists and some aren’t, and that’s fine. Her voice is a gift, and that’s undeniable. We should just let her be, I’m sure that she’ll come back stronger than ever when it’s right.
@@tgabz nah fam, I’m not even a fan of her, but I know how sober sounds in actual official audio and she sounded different from it in the clip they provided. Sounds a little pitchier tbh. She’s probably just used a loud backtrack and sing over it, that’s all. I stan kpop artists and this is the technique most of the non vocalists do. Doesn’t mean it’s not live, just heavily layered.

@@tgabz her vocals on every performance of Sober are different, which means that at least a big part of them are live, since recording a different version for every show would be pretty much impossible. She also randomly pulls the mic away from her and the sound cuts off matching the movement... I do believe she lip synced some performances, but a small amount of them. She did sing live, and that’s a fact.

In a sense, it`s not her voice being the problem but rather the songs she chooses. Why do they all have to be vocal athletes? Selena will most likely never be that, with no training in the world. Is it bad to be a soft singer? Not really. Try being different. There`s more than enough belting and high note competition out there.
Yeah it's due to her being compared so much... She genuinely is trying to fit in with other peoples expectations but her voice is unique for one thing and they aren't going down that path. As much as I love selena trying new things and trying to sing higher than usual to please others , I'd prefer to have her soft sweet low range anyday 🥺❤️ man i love that woman to death... As someone who suffers with an auto immune disease…Heavy medication really affects your breathing and lung capacity, it also lowers your confidence too. She’s so amazing for still performing even with all of that going on and more.
You have to watch more “sober” performances to realize that she wasn’t doing playback. :) The revival tour in Singapore its my fav because she was so confident and fearless.

I've heard TONS of Sober performances by her and all of them had different variations, on the tones, the power, the notes, there was just the record behind, there was at no moment any lypsync from her, so stop saying bullshit this way because it discredits your speech completely. She has voice weaknesses, she's inconsistent but she sings mostly live and her revival tour was 100% live.
I need to selena to goes into r&b, or alternative (smth like lana production), i feel like her tone and voice would fit really well, and her lower notes would highlight more.
You need a strong voice for rnb, that you are confident playing with and using in different ways, because it’s less production heavy and melody focused than pop. So that probably wouldn’t be good for her; also her fans probably wouldn’t listen to it.

I feel like her voce isn’t super strong but it’s a very nice tone. I also think her voice got a little weaker over the years. After all she doesn’t need to be doing the biggest high notes as long as she sounds good. In conclusion, I like her songs but wouldn’t go to her concert.

YES! So happy that you talked about how her best vocals were when she was with disney! I once saw an interview of her saying that she used to be forced to sing very high when she has a deep voice. Personally I disagree with her completely, she is clearly more comfortable singing a little higher. To me it sounds like she is trying really hard to make her voice sound deeper than it is affecting the control over her voice. Also I agree that she lost all of her confidence on stage, it's so sad when she has potential. And at one point she even had the best music out of all of the disney girls of her age. Well hopefully one day she takes singing more seriously and regains confidence
I remember reading in an interview, years ago, that her main gold with Disney was to be an actress but part of her contract was to make an album as well, so I never seen her as someone with passion for creating music. She has everything and more, to get lesson and therapy for her shyness, and to find her own voice and sound that would make her stand out from others, but still she won't do it because now there are so many tools to make lazy singer sound good that she just go with that, she already has millions of devoted fans, and does not seem interested in being remember as someone iconic in the music industry
Her problem is trying to be a singer before learning to sing. She has used her fame as an actress to become a singer. And now we have to feel sorry for her because she is insecure about her voice? Some people train their voices for 10 years before starting to sing publicly.

I kinda feel that the whole "Selena Gomez can't sing live" notion has mostly been more of a meme rather than an objective analysis on her singing abilities, as you can see from some of her best moments here that she has the potential to become a capable vocalist when she chooses to focus solely on her voice in her performances. I think you're right that the reason most people criticize her so harshly for her singing is because she's one of the biggest names in pop music yet she doesn't seem to be on par with her flashier and vocally more polished peers such as Jojo, Miley, Ariana etc. The more popular an artist gets, the easier it is to attract criticism (which in Selena's case is often justified due to her inconsistency). If Selena Gomez made alternative music similar to more reserved musicians such as Hope Sandoval from Mazzy Star; she wouldn't have had the kind of audience she has now, but she could have been more comfortable performing in smaller settings, or even transformed her weaknesses into strengths by making her breezy and delicate voice the selling point of her music.
Having potential is not the same as being a good singer. She is not. There's people who train for years and years before singing professionally, that are 100 Times better than her that will never have a carriere in the music field. She is privileged and spoiled.

What happened to her studio vocals though? Her live vocals have never been perfect to say the least but her old songs were so much easier on the ears, mainly because the vocals sounded natural. I actually like her tone.
I agree. I always say that sometimes her team or whoever keeps giving her songs that are not meant for her voice. Some of her best music, sonically is when she was with The Scene. Those songs were great for her tone and her vocal ability.
I get what you're saying. The first time I heard bad liar I had no clue it was her and after I learned it was I immediately came t ok the conclusion that they auto tuned the heck out of the chorus.
@@guppy2816 Bad Liar isn’t anywhere near as bad as the vocals on Rare and that new song she put out. The only song where it doesn’t sound processed to oblivion is Lose You To Love Me and Look At Her Now is covered by so much that it doesn’t stand out.
You can sort of tell she started to take vocal lessons within the Revival era as there was a hint of improvement on her belts, but with the constant hate, doubt and comparisons she received from the public, it’s no wonder why soon she gave up. And now she sort of knows she’s starting to fade away from the music industry, so she’s venturing out in different ways like directing movies and TV Shows, releasing makeup brands, and she carries on with her acting, which are very smart moves for her long-term career. When you are a multi million dollar signer, the bare minimum is to sounds good. Not excellent and amazing like Beyonce or Bruno Mars, not everyone has powerhouse vocals. Just good, like Taylor Swift or Shawn Mendes, but it seems like Selena has a hard time sounding good when it comes to her live vocals.
And atleast most artists have other talents that make them stand out like Taylor is great at songwriting and Britney is good at performing/dancing. However, Selena doesn't seem to have that either.
I don't think she absolutely loves singing but she did it because she unexpectedly got successful. She mentioned how Disney wanted her to have a music career despite her not wanting to. Her passion definitely lies in acting.She then compromised and said she would only do it with a band but Disney literally marketed her as the face anyway. Then she got successful and continued doing it. I genuinely do think (as the video mentions) that she was improving before all of the stuff in her personal life and her mental health went down. If you look at her prime and when it ends, it was when she stated having health problems, mental issues and the general public started saying she had a really average and boring voice which shattered her confidence. As someone who struggles with mental health myself, sometimes it's really hard to put in effort for something that I don't have a lot of interest in (especially when I'm down) and the thing that made it so much worse for Selena was how so many people just hated her. That being said, I don't think it's fair to take this video as a reflection of her vocal capabilities rn. She hasn't sung live in a year and she seems to be very productive rn and doing well mentally for the first time in years so her vocals may have gotten better if she invested time into them. The reason I think it's likely that she's going to get better in the future is because it seems like she's doing well mentally. She's been extremely productive this year. She released an album, filmed a cooking show, started filming a TV series, produced a movie and released a makeup line and she seems really happy. I think this is what she meant when she said she worked hard. Her voice isn't the only thing she invested in this year. She still might have because we haven't heard an actual live performance from her since the before her album released. She might have also said she works hard because those past years, while she may not have improved, she might have been trying to and it felt like hard work to her because of how mentally unhealthy she was. It might've just felt like hard work to even make appearances, tour and etc. when she felt terrible and wasn't self confident. That being said, I really hope she improves as she seems okay now. These are just my two cents.

Selena was actually quite pleasant to listen to during her Disney era. She wasn’t nearly as good as Demi and Miley, but she also couldn’t be considered terrible. A lot of her songs sounded way too high for her anyway. I mean, she shouldn’t be sustaining C#5s with the technique she has. Selena just seems lazy, honestly. Tons of amazing vocalists have gotten hate and been called terrible singers. Her former Disney co-workers, Miley and Demi, still get called terrible for various reasons even though they’ve solidified themselves as above average vocalists. They never let people’s comments stop them. Hundreds of other singers went through the same thing. I think the only logical explanation behind Selena’s terrible vocals, is that it’s a choice.
She also had Kidney transplant with complications and she left an abusive relationship which caused chronic PTSD. Jesus, give the girl a break. I love Rare, so many great songs. I also love her new Spanish language song. Let’s not forget that she has been filming movies while singing and just launched a make up long that benefits mental health research.
It's not the same thing, Demi and Miley get crticized a lot but it's rarely because of their singing, yes people do say they need to improve in some things and all but when it comes to Selena the main thing people says is that she can't sing or the Justin Bieber drama, and im talking about people that don't even listen to her songs or watch her perfomances, they only follow what others have said before and that's the only thing they see her as. I've seen people getting made fun of for listening to her music or being a fan, little children telling other kids that like her "selena can't sing" because nowadays people just say it as a fact and everyone else repeats it. @Anne Day But her prime era was before she got lupus. Some of her best vocal moments are from that era. I think something people don't realize is that when her prime era ended, she not only got lupus, but her mental health issues also started popping up and since she also got more famous around that time with the release of Revival, people started commenting on how boring her voice was which shattered her confidence. I think the quality of her performance depends on how anxious she is. You can clearly see when she feels confident or rather she would anywhere but there.
Lupus is unique to individuals so not all symptoms are the same. It affects ppl differently and she's shared her struggles with it including kidney failure and arthritis. Coupled with constant fatigue I don't blame her. I do think we're expecting too much from Selena because we're not in her shoes. We don't know what she's going through but I do understand what it feels like to lack confidence. I struggle with that everyday that it hinders me at times.
You can tell her character is changed. Like, she used to be a happy quirky girl but now she’s so serious, and sad and forces herself to be happy in front of cameras. She just gives off the vibe that she cries at night. And it hurts me honestly. She received too much hate in the past.
It for SURE is self-confidence and her health. She used to sing higher in her Disney days and a little after which sounded great! But I do think her self-esteem has gone down but NOW it is so hard for her to get better at singing with all her health issues and stuff. I know she can progress though.
I'm a fan of Selena but I'm also a singer and I study lyrical singing, which brings the truth of the voice of those who are studying, Selena has a very beautiful bass that she doesn't use or works on top of that And also as much as I love the Revival era, it was there that she stayed in a comfort zone without taking advantage or trying to study and work on her vocal power. Even so as a fan I can hear her sing her songs all day for being a fan, but I still hope she realizes that she has a beautiful voice that needs hard work.

@@FifthFallsbyEddie Her tessitura isn't actually low, but her voice is pretty underdeveloped. She's a natural Soprano voice and rather light. As also stated in the video, Selena doesn't venture into her middle or upper register because of technique issues, leading to tension and pitch problems. She barely ever supports past the mid-4th octave.
As a fan, I remember in 2014 or 2015 when she was taking a few vocal lessons with Jojo’s vocal coach and I thought we were gonna see more improvements on her technique. It’s seems like she stopped trying recently. We haven’t had a real live performance since the awful 2019 AMA performance. It’s like she doesn’t try because she feels like she will always fail. I know she has had a lot of trauma in her life with lupus and constant hate from the media and public, but I wish she wouldn’t let it get her her. She has potential to be better, but if she doesn’t believe she can do it, she will never reach it.
Basic pitch retention and support are required just to make a HS choir. She has the money and resources to improve. if this is her “job” then she should do better.
I always have said that Selena when she was on Disney/ with the scene she had more potential and sounded like she was actually having fun and trying different things with her vocals. She somewhere along the way got lost and suffered with her confidence and her some of her songs were way out of her range in her later years. Although I didn’t really like rare, I felt like it was the most she’s been herself vocally in a long while
I am a Selena fan so I am obviously biased but I genuinely love her voice and tone. I agree she does not have a strong voice and is not a vocalist but that is okay because her tone is beautiful and she knows how to convey her emotions with her music which I adore. She has been lacking confidence the last few years with everything going on in her life and it is obviously affecting her performances. I love her so much and admire all she has done. I just wish people weren’t so mean to her online she is one of the sweetest celebrities and so down to earth.
I think when you have a sound that you like, for example Selena who has this soft sexy spoken almost whispered type of vibe it’s hard to improve in vocal range without sacrificing the sound that you love so much, I believe that if Selena wanted she could do very amazing vocals, but it’s not something she wants, it may be because she doesn’t have the confidence to take that step or maybe it’s not her style, either way I really like her style, she still sounds emotional and unique to me

I’ve always said Selena Gomez is one of my favorite non-singing singers. This is coming from and comparison to all the R&B, Soul, Neo Soul, and Gospel that I been around all my life. One thing I’ll say is. Black women, definitely a dark skinned black woman could never have a hugely successful long music career with vocal like hers.
I think Same Old Love is PERFECT for her voice. I think the tone she produces singing the chorus is nice. I love her voice, and I wish that she would work on her voice!
Sadly the voice singing the chorus is not her is Charlie, the one who made the demo. Rare also has the voice from the demo singers mixed with her. I like her as a celebrity and she's gorgeous but she's not a good singer

I just think her fans have the bar so low for her that they praised her for the barely minimum and she just got comfortable in that sentiment. Maybe in one point she did try to improve but I think the talent just wasn’t there and everybody could see it and the people started to take her down, so I think she took the easy way to just sing for the fans that don’t care about her bad technique and mediocre live performance. She never even wanted to be a singer in the first place and she’s still selling tho so why should she even care enough to improve?, for her fans?
