Someone asked why you are doing this.... Because It Is THERE! 45 years ago my wife and spent 2 years sailing a 30 footer to NZ and back. (It was such a great experience that we did it again 6 years later.) Now, at 80 years of age, those memories are very important to us! Go for it, ladies!!!!!!!!!

Please work out how to correct the fore/aft trim on the boat when rowing. The rig + rower hanging out the back tips the stern down/ bow up and is bad for speed and hence a waste of your energy. Work out how to put the steers-girl on the foredeck or inside as far forward as possible. Steering lines from tiller to bow or maybe an autopilot remote?
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 4 месяца назад
Yes definitely going to put all our gear and water up at the bow. Sylvia is a lot lighter than my dad too, so that will help when she’s in the cockpit. It’s Definitely not ideal, but hopefully we can fix it a bit more!

@@AllAboutSpray Great, thanks for responding! Setting up tiller lines to the foredeck is easy: two small turning blocks and some line will allow steering from the foredeck. The rower should be able to see how deep the stern is digging ( or preferably, not)? Clinometers are cheap. Get two with a fine and coarse scale and set one on the cabin bulkhead for heel and one on the cockpit side for fore/ aft trim? Getting this right could make the difference between getting to K and dropping out due to heartbreaking slow progress. I'd like you to achieve the former! Remember the boat was designed to trim right with the crew in the cockpit, from tiller end forwards. By putting the rowing rig on the transom you've already messed with that. (Yes, balance with water and sails). Then fold it out and add a body weight; not good! Good thing is that rowing is normally coz' of no wind=calm sea. "Sail when you can, row when you must". Your backup of sailing from the cockpit seems a good safety measure. If you had 4 oars, could you both row, one from the foredeck, one from the rig? It's going to be a great experience!

@tomedom5017 raises some good points! And I think that could make a huge difference! You’re both going to be absolutely exhausted rowing, and any better boat speed you can get will make a difference! Run those lines and turning blocks!! It’s not expensive, and you guys seem like you’re of similar weight, so one on the bow and one on the stern should make the boat as level as possible in calm water.

Hi, Great video, I thought the rowing rig, from the last video, looked great. I also imagine that you will only be using it when there is no wind, hence calm conditions. Either way, I feel that you guys have a great potential in this race. Your boat is fast, and with the rowing rig for the light conditions, you should do very well. Best of luck, and keep on training!

I don’t know how much you can use that rowing thing you built. I’m really happy to hear you put have the option to stay in the cockpit.The Vikings crossed oceans that way. Think you could use that rig down south.in these northern latitudes,I think you will be under water most of the time.Hope you practice in the cockpit more. I’m rooting for you and wish I did more stuff like that when I was younger.Hope when I’m happy with my progress on my boat. I will run into you up the coast.good luck and I’ll be watching

We didn’t build it, we bought it from a team that used it and put it to the test in a previous year of the R2ak. Thanks for cheering us on, we are definitely going to need it!!

Oh wow thank you so much for the offer. I would have taken you up on this, but we actually bought one a few months ago for this. I hope you get to do your Mississippi trip:)

The only thing I noticed in the last video was it seemed like the oars were setup so you were pulling them towards your neck. It’s like the seat needs to be higher or the oarlocks up higher. If you look at the rowing machine you pull the handle towards your abs or sternum. I think if you have to pull higher it’s probably going to wear out your shoulders pretty fast.
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 4 месяца назад
Hmm yes I agree after reviewing footage too. Thanks for the feedback. We’ve just took out a spacer for the oars, which would put the seat higher. I’m really keen to test that out next.

I don't believe that speed will be the issue, endurance on the rowing if it ends up being multiple days, but you girls can do it. May all the days leading to your departure date be productive and mentally fulfilling.

Perhaps reaching out to your local rowing club for a crash course on real life oar management might not be a bad idea.

Work on form, the farther you go, the more efficiency matters. Look up good rowing form and try to find an olympian or national team member to watch

I'm wondering what U will be doing for mental stimulation while on your trip. Will U be able to talk to anyone other than each other? How many hours do U think it will take? I will be watching & staying in touch with you. Happy Trails to U!!

Ah I think we will be over stimulated between navigating currents, rowing and trying to eat we will stay busy! We are hoping for under 2 weeks! Thanks for watching!

You would think if you could row from the cockpit it would be a safer place and lose the weight of the rowing machine.
@AllAboutSpray
@AllAboutSpray 4 месяца назад
Absolutely, it will be a great back up option. But in calm conditions this is much more ergonomic and efficient and will keep the cockpit free. I’m not exactly sure on the weight but it’s about 50lbs? We will see how our test across the strait goes next month though and will keep this in mind!

We were wondering if we are bending our wrists too much when we are full contracted? I can see how it would wear after hours like that

Haha yes true. Weight loss plan? But in serious, yes, will only be able to wear it if it’s in cool enough conditions
