The reason Stephan was climbing later in the video is because he's stressed and in too small of an enclosure, climbing behaviors are usually only observed in hamsters that are in small enclosures without enough space/enrichment/etc. Normally this manifests as monkeybarring in wire cages, but it seems Stefan is climbing the tree since the walls are glass. The idea behind this set up is awesome, and giving your hamster so much space to burrow is incredible, but that isn't a substitute for total floor space, reliable food and water sources, and a large wheel accessible at all times. I hope I'm not coming off as rude, I just genuinely want to help both you and Stefan by giving some advice. Maybe you could make a video where you upgrade the size of the hamsteraium, or where you get him a wheel made of natural materials. Overall, this is an awesome idea, there's just a bit of room for improvement.
@@finnaboo797 Yeah I've gathered as much since posting this. Maybe it'll at least educate other people who watch these videos and look through the comments, hopefully.
@@emeraldhearts4047 ive been in contact with a bunch of bigger youtubers that focus on hamsters asking them to weigh on this so maybe he'll listen to them if he cant read comments
I agree with you 100%, and I also don't think the dirt is good for the hamster either, when they burrow in the wild, it's in sand (since they're desert animals), hamsters aren't used to dirt (By the way, I love your pfp, Sora is the best!!)
I know it goes against what this setup is supposed to do but a wooden wheel or something would be healthy for him to spend his energy on. In the real wild he would be running many distances. Maybe have it attached on the upper top of the tank so it doesn't keep getting stuck on the soil, with maybe a small twig bridge to get up to it or something.
I agree. It would be good for him to get the same amount of running exercise he would in the wild. They can run up to 10km during a night in the wild and he does not have enough room in his cage to run that far.
Every now and again Stefans servant puts a free standing wheel in but honestly I think Stefan actually has plenty of stimulation- when it's a stark sawdust cage they need the extra exercise but with all that digging he can do I think he is fine!
1:34 "Stephan does not visit this place very often" --> In a 'shoe box home' this unfeasibly tiny, please be rest assured that our dear Stephan most certainly does visit this local quite literally, multiple times every second he activates 'surface mode'.
Stephen is a cute hamster, it needs a bigger home, love the bedding and digging but needs more enrichment as well a wheel tunnels and chews etc. Also a water bowl is best and food constantly.
Maybe it's kinda hard for him to get a wheel and a bigger cage because his town is actually being bombed and surrounded by the Russians. Many Ukrainian people had to euthanize their pets or leave them behind when their towns were destroyed. I believe this is why he has kept his cage small and natural, so he can take it with and replicate it more easily.
@@foofyastralpunk5875 that would be understandable but he should make it clear to the audience that this is not an ideal hamster setup that they should try to replicate
@@foofyastralpunk5875 maybe if he had done his research in the first place he would know that hamsters need a lot more space than what he custom made for him. if you can't fit the proper cage or provide proper care for a hamster, you shouldn't get one
I dont think the hamster's day is spent inside this box.judging by its height the hamster can easily get out.seeing that he is trying to get out desperately means he dont stay in this box as a usual thing
I love these videos but also feel sad that Stephan doesn't have the minimum 450sq inches of space needed for any hamster house. He might be trying to get out because he's bored without a wheel and has extra energy. The size of the enclosure and having a wheel are basic hamster care and Stephan needs these upgrades.
@@stevebutabi9084 in the wild they travel very far distances so they don't need a hamster wheel. But in captivity, they need a hamster wheel to release all their stored energy and if they don't have a hamster wheel, at least give them a large enclosure to release their energy.
@@renzelle5644 That hamster was non stop running around and digging all video. So I think a wheel or bigger cage is pointless. He obviously doesn't have that much stored energy to be sleeping for as long as it does.
I’m not hating or anything. Just tryin to improve Stephens life. You should always leave food in his enclosure. I would also definitely leave some kind of chew toy in his enclosure too. Like sticks you wouldn’t mind being messed up. Other than that, the enclosure is great and you are doing a great job keeping him a cookie happy and healthy! Sending lots of love. ❤️🙂
Everythings a predator to a hamster. Do you not think he finds the 6 foot tall bipedal alien thing with opposable thumbs hovering over him disconcerting? Lol. If only he had a bigger enclosure you say he'd be so much happier. What surrounded by wall to wall plushies, yeah I'm sure he feels right at home. 🤣
I clicked on the link, expecting to see this great big natural cage and instead I see... this. It's barely larger than one of those awful cages pet stores still sell (why aren't those banned yet?) and this little guy, while he has space to burrow, really needs a wheel to exercise and please, please, PLEASE give him a larger cage/enclosure! Seriously, this is far too small and I know it is, because I kept my first hamster in a cage that was too small (still larger than this one, though) and the moment I put him in his new terrarium I could see how much he loved it. He loved the space, love how he could burrow, and was overall much happier and showed far more natural behavior than he first did. I feel sorry for this little guy, in the wild they can forage and run so much further than this. You are not taking care of him the way you could be.
according to some tests, 3/4 of the size of that cage is perfect for a hamster. Stephan has the right conditions, and doesn't seem like he's stressed to the avalabile space.
he needs a wheel with a diameter of 8inches or more and the terrarium needs to be larger (minimum 80cm x 50cm floor space). soil from outside is dangerous as it can carry diseases that stephan is not used to due to being born a domesticated animal and could easily die from them suddenly. So if you baked/froze the current soil, put it in a larger terrarium (80cm×50cm+ but still giving 15cm+ of space to burrow), and a large wheel it would be much better (and Stephen might stop biting you)

if u've watched some of his previous videos. The hamster has a spinning plate or something on his terrarium. Maybe he didnt show it in this video but the hamster actually has a spinning plate for him to run.
You need a wheel in this cage please listen to these comments don’t just ignore them you need to have a wheel , hamsters feel really stressed in the cage without, u can also find a wooden wheel so it will match this cage!

Yeah non domesticated hamsters live in the wild With out wheels, but these are domesticated hamsters and they have to have a wheel , there is a big Difference.
Hello, I really like your hamster videos, it's so interesting to see him in a natural type habitat. I've mentioned this previously, and others have commented this as well, but he really needs a larger space. I've seen people use ikea detolf shelves or really large plastic bins or aquariums for enclosures. With more space, you can add more things that will provide enrichment, like sand, stones, branches, oat/millet sprays, and herbs. Also, you can add wooden dowel rods to the house so it won't collapse. I hope you consider these suggestions!
Sorry to hijack your post but the more likes the more views. I'm not sure how much this youtuber reads the comments but many people have pointed out the risks with this kind of setup!!
While I do love his environment, shephen should also have a large wheel to burn off all his energy, hamsters run almost a mile every night in the wild!
if u've watched some of his previous videos. The hamster has a spinning plate or something on his terrarium. Maybe he didnt show it in this video but the hamster actually has a spinning plate for him to run.
those spinning plates are not ideal. They are the 'cheaper' version of an actual spinning wheel. As the plate is tilted its hard for the hamster to spin in it as it always has to keep fighting agains the centrifugal force. The best thing is to have a normal, stand up wheel. He won't get bored in one of those.
There is a lot wrong with Stephen’s cage. The things that really jump out at me is that there isn’t enough space, and he needs a wheel. Also, however trained or calm your cat may be, you should NEVER EVER EVER let your cat put its face right next to your hamster. Your cat could easily put a terrible end to Stephen’s life.
Absolutely my cat actually killed one of my hamsters in a millisecond right when I turn my back now I've only got one hamster left and he always acts like he's in Hunter mode his pupils dilate and everything the whole time I'm thinking gosh I wish my cat was that nice haha
@@amberhouse3220 oh that's terrible. No matter how well trained your cat or dog is, you can't control the. Like you said, if you turn your back for a second, instincts can kick in and then your hamster's gone.
Though skittish, hamsters are curious adventurers that need constant stimulation especially if food is readily available. They're also phenomenal escape artists. I remember mine growing up getting out constantly. One even visited me while sleeping. Had his cage on my dresser at the foot of my bed. He somehow managed to chew the water bottle loose then using his food dish as a step stool was out of the cage, he then apparently yolo'd the one safe direction onto my bed instead of four feet to the floor. I woke up feeling something along my leg, I pull the covers back which caused him to pause briefly to look at me with annoyance, then went on his way... until of course I returned him home adding extra security in the process. 😄🐹💙
He really needs more space and a wheel, and most of all, food. Don't leave him hungry. A single nut is in no way enough, he needs at least two tablespoons of food per day!
@@budgetking2591 That's cruel. A pet should not have a difficult life just trying to acquire food. That's like saying for any meal you eat you must complete an obstacle course and at the end, you don't even know what meal is there.
@@budgetking2591 letting him work for it would mean providing the food in different locations so he can search it, adding tricky foraging toys so he has to think how to get the food, burying or just leaving hard shelled nuts so he has to first chew them open. But notice, all those options include the food, the hamster has to "work for it" by finding ways to get it when it's already there. But this hamster doesn't have food to work for. What do you propose, send him in an office cubicle, make him do web design or economics?
Time for a much bigger park for Stephen. He's a wonderful RU-vid star in the making . This series is extremely satisfying to watch . Please continue with Stephen videos.
There’s so many unhealthy and wrong things happening. First, Stephan needs a bigger cage than that, hamsters require a wheel and enrichments to keep them entertained and healthy. Cats DO NOT eat worms
@Macawru all things considered, unfortunately this hamster is living the life compared to so many "pets" that people have on far worse conditions. Whether we talk about hamsters, birds of reptiles.
I heard meal worms have a lot of protein same with crickets and most bugs. Some people actually cook and eat meal worms and crickets I wish it was a thing cause I would love to try some crispy crunchy deep fried salty spicy meal worms and crickets
This is habitat is ridiculously expensive small, he’s eating those beans not because he’s hungry but because he’s extremely bored. No wheel despite them covering kms in the wild. Should leave food in the cage as well. Will regulate his own eating pattern.
Is the cutest thing I've seen tonight. I need this kind of stuff to balance the harshness of the days. This type of content helps a lot for people like me, with mental health conditions. We sometimes need some distraction when we're on a crisis or to just f-off a nasty thought our minds can bring up to harm us.

I think he's moved to Poland or at least lives very close to the border - most of the items he uses are Polish brands, including the peas in this episode.

I'm glad people are actually pointing out the issues here. I've supported this channel for a long time but this is where I have to draw the line. The fact that videos like this are still up and unaddressed shows willing ignorance. Issues like this don't need sugar coating. This is animal cruelty. I know it might sound dramatic but there's nothing being done here. The cage is too small and everything in it can/will harm your hamster. Not to mention how wreckless it was to let your hamster roam around freely outside. If we don't see changes in the near future, we'll know how much they actually care about Stephen.
@@freesoftwareextremist8119 he does speak English so he's perfectly capable of reading the comments. Like I said I've been waiting his channel for a while and genuinely supported him. Friendly suggestion! You might be interested in looking in to an IKEA DETOLF shelf as an hamster enclosure. If you turn the shelf on its side, its basically a HUGE enclosure for nowhere near the cost of a real big enclosure. Check it out!
PLEASE, if you care about Stephen...actually, even if you don't because every life deserves respect and dignity, PLEASE watch Victoria Raechel's Basic Hamster Care 2021 video. This is a cool idea but as it is right now, it's cruel to make Stephen live in this tiny cage without the basics that he needs. He's a living animal, not a robot experiment with no needs :( There are many comments on this video and the previous video that detail many of the things that Stephen needs, please read them. And please keep in mind hamsters are prey animals and therefore very anxious, and changing up his environment too suddenly and too often is very stressful for him.
absolutely wron you have decided that every life deserves dignity but that is not true at all it is not given in the wild it is not deserved period end stop.
I can see you care about Stephan very much and we all do cuz he is such an adorable fluff. Stephan needs much more, and even if you want to maintain and naturalistic setup you still need to provide him with more space, exercise, and ample food. Hamsters can self regulate food intake, and store bought pellets are not great but they are nutritionally complete. You can refer to some scientific research on the nutrients they need and create you own blend consisting of enough fat, fiber, carb, and crude protein. You can also add sprays, chewing toys (can be just wood sticks made of hamster safe wood such as apple wood, and other materials such as loofah, hay, and sweet bamboo sticks). For a better environment, rather then planting bioactive plants which can introduce dangerous pests, maybe try dry flower sprays. They can add nice color and extra sensory stimulation for Stephan. I think you are doing a lot for your hamster to try to create a natural environment, but I believe this might be sacrificing some of Stephan’s happiness.
@Arina Likes do you realize that this man and hamster are living in the middle of an occupation war zone? The Russians are surrounding his town, they don't have doctor's or medicine. I would guess the pet shops are closed.
@@foofyastralpunk5875 yes I do, and there are plenty of resources including cardboard boxes and plastic bins that can be used for hamsters that cost very little if you DIY.
Think the idea of this enclosure idea is probably because of the shelling from Russia. It gives the little hamster 'a safe place' he can be moved to to de-stress. I am certain he is only in there part time. There are huge clues, including the greenery is still alive after several days, nor is everything trampled flat. While Stephan is in here he is supervised.
everyone else is saying it and i dont know if he's made updated videos where he improves stephans living circumstances but lots and lots and lots of research and planning is needed for ANY pet! even those that seem so simple as a hamster, we all love our pets so always make sure to do your research!
Due to how long it took to see the next part, people in the comment assume this hamster has been living there for over a month now and think he's starving and dehydrating. It's clearly barely 1-2 days in total, considering that they showed footage of the first night in this part (which is part 3). So people need to chill lol.

mung beans grow very easily, and are edible. they will grow straight up about 3 inches. you can even buy them fresh at grocery stores, i sue them in fried rice.
It’s absolutely amazing and wonderful what you have done! Thanks for sharing. He has a wonderful place for himself. All he needs now is a couple to love.
I am reading all the comments and I cannot believe you have critics! This hamster is happy as a clam ( okay ...well happy as a hamster!) This is a wonderful little hamsterarium , with plenty to do. Perhaps the commenters would like to build their own hamsterarium , turn it into an amusement park for hamsters; and put said hamusment park on youtube, i think they should go for it, and leave poor Stefan alone! He is clearly quite happy!
Did you ask him? 😂 Following basic logic, this would not make a hamster happy. Hamsters like to forrage and store food. He is only giving him little bits and pieces to eat, nothing to store. This is a basic need for hamsters that is not being met. Another thing hamsters do whole forraging for that food is run great distances. That is difficult to do in captivity, but impossible in such a tiny enclosure. He can dig which is good, but that is not all he needs. He needs to be able to explore and run around. The enclosure does not allow the hamster to find new things, there is not enough food to forrage and store and the enclosure is simply not big enough for the exercise and mental stimulation hamsters need. So in short; any hamster that does not have its basic needs met is not a happy hamster. With animals you cannot simply assume they are happy because they are, what, active? Or not in physical pain? An animal needs more than the basics. I am not even sure how you got to the conclusion that this was a happy hamster.
"plenty to do" it cant do anything no toys or wheel IT DOESNT EVEN HAVE A WATER DISH!! And no he is clearly unhappy and stressed and theres many signs in the video to prove it u would know if u even knew a little about hamster care
Bro the way you persuaded your cat to consume that worm out of existence was hilarious. I can subscribe just for that funny moment. My cat brought a live mice to my bedroom and that was not as amusing. I can deal with them eating little protein but don't bring a live specimen to me as a gift lol. I had to throw the mice out in a plastic cup upside down and put paper under the upside down cup and chucked him outside. My cat was like on meth after I threw it like I destroyed his dinner. Lmao. Cats are hilarious.
Your hamster needs more space and possibility for activation. Regardless that your intention is to create a "natural" environment, this size in particular is not nearly enough. It is also not close to a natural habitat, as dwarf hamsters (Roborovski hamsters) live in deserts in the wild. Please take proper care of your animal. Profiting off of mistreating your pet is cruel.
@@hsheeld Yes I actually did 'lol' Domestic hamsters whether dwarf, Syrian or Roborowski need proper substrate like wood shavings or compact chips, something dry, not damp soil and it should be deep. They are desert dwellers by nature. This guy hasn't got a clue how to house rodents, this enclosure is embarrassing, it's far too shallow. No toys, wheel or anything to burr it's teeth down on, so they will grow continuously. The addition of a predator looming down on it will probably scare it to death. Poor f*uc*king hamster. You obviously know nothing about it either.
Definitely, it's amazing how many people here are like "this is animal cruelty!" I had hamsters for years as a child, their homes were about this size, maybe a little bit bigger, the ground was bedding, and they ate pellets. They lived 2-3 years and seemed happy enough. This hamster lives like a king, and it's not good enough for the snowflakes, that would prefer to donate their living room for a single hamster.
Oh wow peas already peed on by hamsters. This will save me so much time! Getting my hamster to pee on individual peas I buy from the store is exhausting! 🤣
You’re videos are wonderful. I know the narrator isn’t you, but he certainly adds some fun and warmth. From what I remember, you have a strong Ukrainian accent. The narrator sounds like a British guy trying to put on a slight Ukraine twang 😅
That's a super cute idea; to give the hamster an enclosure that looks like its natural habitat. And quite frankly, a terrarium like this is like a mini garden and super pretty, much more so than a cage full of wood dust and plastic
Wow amazing thank you...a few questions though.. 1. how did you prevent the bugs from escaping? 2. I would imagine you would have to totally dump the soil at some point given they do leave alot of bio waste. How often do you do that?
Hello Stephan’s owner, as you can see in the comments, Stephan needs a hamster wheel to get his exercise as well as fresh peas. Thanks for these highly entertaining videos! Do you know Leon the Lobster? He’s entertaining too.
My hamster likes dried mealworms. I think she looks the crunch of it. And the other thing is you have to be careful about feeding your hamster live mealworms. For a couple reasons One internal parasites. Two apparently they are capable of biting.
What a nice environment you have made for your sweet hero Stephan. I am sure you know feeding him after he bites you is teaching him to bite. Not sure why you would think that was a good idea. :)
In the wild, wild stephens (hamsters and field mice) goes into people's gardens and "eat" the raw veggies, as they aren't dried/dehydrated) growing there. And we've had hamsters and they had no problems eating raw veggies. If Stephen wanted the pea shoots, he could go underneath the coverings. And as far as the worms, if you put a couple of worms in the soil, he could find them himself.
Quick question. What about him doing his stinky business? I remember I had to clean the sow dust quite regularly. What about your set up? Does it absorb the smell?
