While I’m happy that people can do content creation and work from home a lot more now I do think people also don’t realize how detrimental it has been to the generations. We all would be so much happier if social media, RU-vid, etc really did cease to exist because it would be so much harder to compare, to waste time, to have access to so much info. It would make people get more involved in communities, reach out to people, be more content…

This! Why do people think they have something so “revolutionary” to say.

🙌🙌🙌 I tune into a little RU-vid but haven’t done social media in years and find it sooo freeing. What people know about me is what I tell them. And what I know about them is what they tell me. It’s so refreshing to have things face-to-face and not be overstimulated with over information 😊

I wish RU-vidrs would use the phrase “right now”. “I don’t do this thing right now.” There’s so many videos of things I don’t buy, things we don’t do, and then 6 months later, it’s no longer a commitment. Which is fine! But using a contextual phrase like “right now” or “in this season” reflects reality better than the absolute language. Maybe it’s just me. Just thoughts.

I would counter that over stipulation is one of the more frustrating things for me in modern discourse. Everyone always must stipulate to as not offend or stipulate that they aren't ignoring x and y to just talk about z. It's something I've been consciously looking out for and I believe it to be a common example of bad faith. I try to consciously make my statement concisely and assume that people will understand without preemptively providing context for the misunderstanding with every topic.
@erinlawrence6568
@erinlawrence6568 17 дней назад
It might not be in the title, but they said equivalent phrases plenty in the video. Clickbait? Maybe a little. But I think I agree more with sukoo1 on this. If we weren't so conditioned to expect clickbait (blame the algorithm, I guess), we probably wouldn't assume they meant "Things I've stopped doing forever and always."

"we quit" gets a lot more clicks then "I'm not doing it right now"... which is why i think youtubers do it.

Great episode! I recently gave up t.v. at night. I used to like to watch youtube or a movie with my husband after the kids went to bed, I mostly was realizing they knew we watching shows, and they were jealous and would get out of bed a lot, but after we stopped instarted reading more and like Elijah said, im sleeping better too! And I agree Katie, I'm more inspired when reading, then visually or through audio. I tried podcasts and audio books, but I so much prefer reading a book. I think I might actually stop consuming content after dinner. That's a really good cut off time. Not that i comsume all day haha i mostly listen to music or am homeschooling or outside, but the evening should be screen free for all, for better sleep amd moods. ❤

Oh… the “what time is good for you?”, absolutely hit relatable for our family situation currently! We have always homeschooled and my husband has worked from home for years, but we moved out of state to the country on acreage to start homesteading only a year ago. Our home-state family members, friends, and church/homeschooling community have been absolutely fascinated with our new life here (we came from dense suburban life). When I say 20 families have wanted to come stay with us just within this past year, I’m not exaggerating! They want to experience the mountains, the garden, the chickens, the quiet serenity of nature. And we have been so excited to share it all with those we love. But we fell into the “come anytime! Whenever works for you! Stay as long as you want!”. Well…We got burnt out really fast! Because this kind of life may be slower paced, but it is a constant physical pace that cannot be interrupted often or it quickly falls apart. We now schedule intentional margin, and reserve only certain seasons for visitors.

At some point and setimes the question what works for.you is necessary. Its not just homers and big fsmilies that decide everything. Being single a long time i ended up having to be so flexible or never see people and have fellowship because some always set the boundaries. I understand most the listeners are families but i live listening and learning too as a single hoping one day to have a family.

Agreed. I will discipline our daughter and she will always say, “are you going to tell daddy? He is going to be angry, “ when she actually means he will be disappointed. She takes his judgement very seriously, which is normal as a girl with a loving father.

It’s good to prioritize certain family and personal activities. But be flexible. What if others can’t accommodate your schedule. Sometimes you have to compromise by considering other people’s schedules as well. My entire family of 5 siblings with families has had to coordinate holiday schedules with the time a family sets their time. If others were not flexible we would never get together as an extended family. That’s incredibly selfish not to consider others’ scheduled as well - including church family or friends - and come up with a time that would be the least disruptive for everyone.

If boys aren’t responding to their mother’s authority, it might be because they have picked up on the idea that there is some difference in authority between mom and dad, with the emphasis in some homes on dad being there head of the home and therefore “above” mom. It seems quite feasible that even a male child will internalize that and decide they don’t have to listen to mom the same way. This seems pretty unhealthy to the adult-child relationship and boundaries. There’s no way my child, regardless of gender, is going to be told “wait until dad gets home.”

I've seen this with muslim boys and their Moms in the store. But still don't know if the boys are spoiled or it's a natural need for male authority.

@uffda it's amazing how much reading you can get done in just 15 minutes a day! Personally I cut out bread baking for reading. Reading tends to allow you to get into subjects in a much more in depth way than a podcasting format allows. But I still love a podcast here and there when I have a chance while working around the house!

What if nobody listened to podcasts. Your channel would cease to be. Just because you like reading better doesn’t mean everyone is visual and everyone should stop what you stop. Plus reading demands a specific time you have available. Audio can be done while getting household tasks done.

How do you guys feel about church events? I feel our church always have something going on. My husband comes home at 6 pm everyday and then church on wednesdays is at 6:30 PM and I always feel so stressed to be at the church by certain time. I also feel guilty if I am not involved in the church! but Sunday alone is a hassle trying to make it out of the door with the kids. I don’t want to live a rush life but as christians we have to be involved someway some how. At the end of the day I am wiped out… my husband works 12 hours a day and I homeschool my kids so adding things feels like a job!
@EliseWood
@EliseWood 17 дней назад
Then don’t go to church events if your family unit is suffering. I felt the same, my husband and his brother are the youth leaders at our church only on Sunday mornings and there are some Sundays where we don’t even go to church because it’s been an incredibly long week and we need to sleep in and re connect as a family. I was so worried for him to commit to it because I felt like we hardly got to see him as it was, plus Sundays are full of seeing family later, but we had an open and honest conversation and he promised to stop doing it if our family and marriage was suffering. Two toddlers, homeschooling, living in a tiny home way out in the woods, husband works 6 days a week and is gone and exhausted, etc.! I understand!😂
@candycandyissodandy
@candycandyissodandy 17 дней назад
Then there’s no need to go! Our Pastor told us this: healthy families make healthy churches. Prioritize your marriage and family first and from that strong foundation you can extend yourself. It’s ok if in certain seasons it’s different: we had 3 under 3 and barely served or hung out in groups but made it a priority to baseline go on Sundays. Now we can do so much more. Pray and be led by the Holy Spirit and never make a decision based off of what others expect or think of you. Healthy families make healthy churches!
@JuniperLynn789
@JuniperLynn789 17 дней назад
We got burnt out from church events when our kids were little. All those events weren’t serving our family, but were taking from our family, and so we stopped going to them. Now we are careful about choosing churches that are not so event-focused. It can offer events, but we like the overall culture of the church to not be pressuring families to attend everything.
@hannahthehomesteader
@hannahthehomesteader 17 дней назад
Your primary ministry is your family unit. If you can't properly minister to your family because you're stressed or fatigued from serving the church, then you're failing. Cut back on church events, at least for a season. I agree- Sunday is hard enough to get to if you have little kids.

What do you all tell people who say they stopped going to church and have church at home? I believe we are together in community weekly. Just imagine if the church worldwide stopped meeting? Isn’t that crazy to think about? It’d be a darker world for sure. 😊❤

I feel like the mom need to also have the same amount of influence on discipline with all the children same as the dad, they are both the house authority, even if the husband is the head of the household. That shows kids to respect their mother and women in general, also no one is promise tomorrow so you never know when your husband will pass away and then you will need to start disciplining the kids……that will not work at all if you never discipline them before, they will turn against you. But if from day one you teach them that you both have the same saying and amount of authority over them the outcome will be different. That doesn’t mean the mom cant be sweeter and more gentle than the dad, but the kids need to know both of your discipline counts.

I am sure you both realize that what rhythms/routines, lifestyle choices, free time, etc... that you have now will not always be the same as your kids grow and other (unknown) changes come along. I remember homeschooling and thinking I found the "perfect" set up, only to discover that our kids change or schedules and that it's okay if everything does not feel like smooth sailing. I do enjoy your encouragements to be less focused on screens (social media, podcasts, shows...) and to really invest in your family unit and growing in communion with the Lord.

An observation: this video is titled "10 Things We Quit (And You Should Too)".... Maybe leave off the "and you should too" if you are simultaneously asking viewers to rate your podcast, but advising us to consume less audio content (Katie). Unless you have some other form of income, your livelihood seems to rest on us consuming your content in some way. This seems to come across as belittling your audience. I have swallowed my humble pie to listen to a few episodes. My kids are a little bit older & we homeschool, so it is a little weird that you have a lot of homeschool advice for having such young children, but I understand that you both grew up in big homeschooling families, so perhaps I can learn from your experience growing up. But there are episodes like this that encourage my disenchantment with your content. I still look forward to your interviews like those with Joel Salatin, or Doug Wilson. It is nice to learn from those who are older & have more experience, so kudos for getting such high quality guests with experience.🙌
