I am in the same boat with not having a college degree. I make excuses for not making more money because "I don't have a college degree". I have interviewed for 3 different jobs in the past week that all "preferred" a degree. In all the interviews, not ONE asked why I didn't have a college degree or mentioned anything about college. I created an imaginary wall for not making more money because "I don't have a degree". Nobody told me that. I was telling myself that.
Moriah Orsten i feel you. I use to be the same way until I got sick of waiting on raises and realized its going to take too long moving up the ladders over the years. Start your own business and work for yourself in something you love to do is the way to go. But it’s not for everyone because it’s hard work to build clientele. Not only that, but sacrificing your free time to build your business. And also getting criticized from family who don’t believe in you. But once you reach your goal, there’s no limit on how much you’ll be making, your income then depends on how much you want to work.
@Matthew O'Rosco unless its in writing that they will make you a pilot i wouldn't bank on it. They probably will put you in whatever needs to be filled. Also become a pilot is no easy task
The degree is good for getting into the interview, that pretty much it. It can also be used when negotiating wages. So its not completely useless but its by no means necessary.
@P Maitra "treated unfairly", if someone can do the job with excellence it doesn't matter if they paid to learn or not. That's just snobbery and entitlement speaking. Half of college is useless for the job place, if not more. -someone with two degrees (The non college grad still had to learn after all)
@@jessicaolson490 But honestly if u have been doing ur job for years and a new person started w no degree w the same wage but had experience. You would feel some kind of way. And the non-degree option typically is applicable for white males and not anyone else.
@TheLifeBidder They absolutely are IT jobs, they're entry level used to gain experience while studying for more advanced certifications. 25k a year is incredibly low for that as well, they start around 30k.
Help desk/desktop support is generally consider entry level IT. He's a little underpaid for it, but there are tons of IT people who get their start in Help Desk.
Flashy cars and credit cards and people living out of their freaking means are killing people’s financial peace everyday. Dave Ramsey’s class should be taught in every school in the Country. Changed my life completely!
There’s a reason it’s not taught in schools. It’s not an accident. People with more money don’t want everyone to be rich. Isn’t it insanely obvious that people should be taught personal finance? But year after year there is no change. It’s 2019 we have cars that drive themselves. There is a group of individuals that DONT want it to happen.
@@chadmcmillin8730 math teach logic, but nobody care about math and you get people who can't and won't use logic in their life. Even if finannce is taught in school, only 5% will use it
I mean, she just heard about Dave. At the end of the day, a lot of people really don't think about finding a second job until someone smacks them over the head with it. That idea is less common now. And people will see "well I'm making OK money, I should be fine. So why am I broke?" And until someone points out what we, having gotten to the other side, think should be obvious, it's really unclear. Thus why Dave goes easier on people who call in and are newbies to his show. Because they are sitting in the fog and he wants to guide them out. Now if she calls back in a year with the same problem, well he'll be harsher and smack some sense into her. But for now she needed a more gentle push to get going.
It annoys me when people say that there company is bad because they haven't gotten a raise. First of all, in this case, the company is laying people off so I dought they can afford to give a raise. Second of all, has he ever asked for a raise? Has he applied to other jobs? I dought it. Raises don't just happen, why should a company give a raise if your going to stay in line anyway. Your not entitled to anything.
Dont let Dave fool you. People in "technology" have an enormous salary ranges. The people working a help desk and those with PHDs in engineering are both in "technology."
Sounds like she works from home doing VIPkids. That’s a good side hustle since you work really early hours (typically 5am, 6am since it is after school hours in China then)...but it is definitely not a full time career. Weird because you need a bachelors degree to teach VIPkids, so she’s probably capable of making a lot more at a real job. They both need to take a look at their career tracks.
Hmmm when my income was lower than I wanted it did the following; Worked full time in sales, attended college at night part-time, worked as a bouncer at a club on Friday and Saturday night. I figured I was going to the bar anyhow and rather than spend the money I can earn it. Still saw my friends got paid as well. Oh and I was a reservist for 6 years one weekend per month. Fast forward and I earned the degree, moved up in the company, quit the bar scene and satisfied my military commitment and earned a honorable discharge. Socked money into the company 401k from an early age because I knew if it was in my pocket I'd blow it. well, that is also looking pretty good now that I am 54 years old and retirement is looming. Dig deep and it can be done without filing bankruptcy.
Sounds like this lady and her husband or boyfriend are just lazy. There’s no way he works in “I.T.” and he’s pulling $26,000 annually. That’s just a lie. He’s probably a telemarketer working like 30 hours.
I think he sets up company cell phones....I don't think he's actually "I.T." If he is in IT, then he's dumb as a box of rocks, or lazy if he can't gather up enough experience to jump ship and get a job as a level 1 technician or something at a consulting firm making $50k.
Notice the change in tone of voice of the callers at the end of their rope, almost in tears when they first call in, and then feeling such relief as the conversation progresses. It's like for a moment Dave canceled the loan. The lady almost sounded dumbfounded just before giving thanks.
I have received several calls from a debt collector claiming I have a medical bill from a hospital that doesn’t exist anymore. I’ve told them this is not my debt. I’ve requested that they prove this debt is mine. They have yet to send me any paperwork. They have confirmed my address and no paperwork received. What should I do?
I had the same thing happen. I dug through my records and discovered it was the beyond reasonable and customary charge that the dr wrote off under contract with my insurance. When that practice went under they sold everything they could to make money and that write off was illegally sold to a collections company. At that point it was 7 years past the date of service. Way past statute of limitations. I asked them to mail me proof of the debt and they wouldn’t. They just sold it to another company. That company made the mistake of telling me the name of the debt collection place. It turns out it’s illegal to sell if you dispute the debt and they can’t prove it. I wrote a letter to them stating I was disputing it and what my records said. Never heard from them again
It’s true. But if you had ANY skill at all in IT you should bring home 40k minimum. He either sucks at IT, or is afraid to go out and find a new job. Many people get stuck in sucky jobs because they are convinced its the best they can do.
@@DavoKC She said he is the only one at his job that can do what he does, so maybe he doesn't have to work hard and no one else can touch him, so he loves the easy life at work, but no pay outside of work.
right I work 3 jobs. Sometimes I work from 6 am to 10 pm. I am attacking that debt like no tomorrow. I see the long run rather than today. I could spend my money on more clothes and the latest gadgets but when I am 60 I will suffer for it. Yes I might not live till 60 but I rather be safe than sorry.
Because there is only so much time in a day. In the state of Georgia where the minimum wage is 5.15 per hour, at that rate even if you work 16 hours per day, every single day for a full year, your gross annual income is still only $30,076.
You don't need a degree in IT. Certifications and experience are king. He is really really underpaid and would probably make more as a McDonald's manager. Volunteer/contractor/ documentation writing/internship/ self study certifications... all things he can do to grow in IT. Instead he's waiting on that 3% raise on 25k. Wow
@@steelunited1115 Even on a $45K a year salary, filing for bankruptcy shouldn't be the first option... She didn't even mention kids and is only working part time.
@@jvolstad Do you mind if I ask what area you live in and what company/specific area you work in? I'm on a similar path and I'm curious what others are doing
Wow she speaks Chinese and she's only making about $24,000??? Both of them are being seriously underpaid! She could easily get a linguist job at a big Corporation or Department of State or Department of Defense!
That's too bad. As a Chinese linguist she would be in very high demand. Even still, she has a particular skill set not easy to find. I do agree he needs to find an IT job that pays what he is worth.
@@naddarr1 I was thinking 2 different full time jobs. I didn't realize companies paid that much overtime. The companies I have seen generally don't allow much if any overtime.
@@joeb1522 yea... actually we had guys working 30-32 hours ... if you are doing specialized manufacturing, if the area has a job shortage, yada yada.. we have limits now at 18 but that was because they thought our accidents were too high due to some people working so much problem is.. i showed them its not the guys working 30+ hours of overtime getting hurt... its the people working their regular shift or less than 10 (most of them... new hires...) -_- having too much turnaround is a pain...
I'm curious if she is doing the online VKids English teaching and what area they are living in because NC specifically Raleigh and Charlotte areas are truly booming. It sounds like they may be mentally stuck, I pray they can move forward.
He should get the CompTIA A+ and Network+ certificate. That will greatly help him get a job. Normally I’d recommend Security+ too but it doesn’t sound like he needs that.
LOL, "you just have to know how to flip the switches." I was in IT for twenty years and systems administration is a tiny bit more complex than flipping switches.
$24,000 working in IT? When you call Dell or HP, those level 1 tech support personnel that are forced to follow a script, and have to ask you if you restarted your device, are making $40k+ per year. The reason he survived 5 layoffs is because the company won the lottery. Like paying $16,000 for a new BMW, you don't look a gift horse in the mouth! Keep this guy as long as you can, while he continues to undersell himself.
The biggest issue is that these two don't want to work harder to make more money! Low motivation for both, and that needs to change if they want their life to change!
I don't want to do that. Blah, blah, blah. When you are young get two jobs each!!! I work 7 days a week for fun. Part time is not for broke people. Everyone over 16 needs a JOB. Your broke! You are too lazy to get skills, stack skills, and such. It is easier now than ever. The internet has everything!
@@gangatalishis Maybe find something you enjoy or are passionate about. When I grew 2 rentals to 5 then 8 then I could see and plan a future expansion and ran the numbers it becomes exhilarating. He should be making alot more in IT. But IT field is very certification heavy. Maybe if he got some certs it would help his career opportunities. Hope everything works out for them . And discover card is suing them really quick. Also a degree would help in IT .
If she teaches online with the time difference she can work a full time. My friend teaches English in the morning before his full time job as a high school teacher.
On your resume, after name, and number list your skills! Then your work experience. Then your education. Don't go on too much about hobbies. No one cares if you're a master quilter. Employers want to see if you have the skills to solve their problems on the job.
Well, the lawsuit might be a blessing in disguise. Thanks to the “scare”, she will now finally work more and eventually start getting rid of this and the rest of her 90k debt (which she didn’t seem to worry about much until now).
"Ugh. His company is the worst and he hasnt gotten a raise in 5 years" Ah...The classic it's somebody else's fault that I can't get a head excuse. I don't want to Judge Too Much from one conversation in one snip it. But I don't like when people default to blaming somebody else for why they're not in a better position. If he works in it then there's no reason he can't find a job that pays more then 25k. I suspect maybe he's not really IT and he may just be in customer support.
I do what she does in the same time zone. I’m wondering why she doesn’t have another job. If she has kids or has an illness, that’s common and understandable. Making $2000ish a month, she’s working super early mornings And possibly nights. However, given the average base pay and what she said she makes on average, she’s probably working 25-30 hours a week (if I did the math right). Not many people rely on ESL online teaching as their main income because it is unstable and it’s hard to make it full time.
Our attorney quit us because we would not sue again because their was no cause, so he wants to be released. He said it triggered a triple payment clause in our percentage contract and the case was civil for trespass. He wants to be released we did not sign it. He said when we lost our trial because he missed all the deadlines so no new evedience could be presented. At the end of the trial when we lost, he said good news is you don't owe me anything. Then when we did not want to sue he said we now owe him 150,000 which was triple. next day 160,000 then if I want an invoice he will triple it again. State of Georgia, then he wanted me to put a lien on my house make him #1, the a promissory note for 160,000 and then release him. Now he says he is going to sue me put a lien and foreclosure on my house. We are on limited income, retired. 74 and 68 husband has cancer and I have heart issues. HELP
I think there were callers in much worse situations andDav didn't offer them what he offered here. I'm ESL myself and I'd not go to that lady for classes, not because she is in debt but the attitude from her voice...
Not exactly true. Almost every person I've worked with in my 20+ years in the IT field did not have a degree. Maybe some college but not a degree. I know CCIEs and sys admins who never set foot in college. I've hired extremely knowledgeable people without degrees. For me it's about what you actually know and your experience. Most of the people I've worked with in the IT field who have degrees, don't pertain to anything in the IT field. Now that we've shared comments you can now say you know 2 people who don't have a degree in the IT field. I encourage people to go to school, without taking on debt, but make sure it's for the right reasons and when they're done it will translate into a career.
Yep people use bankruptcy as a personal financial tool or bailout. that code needs to be re-drafted by Congress. bunch of scammers file it and the attorneys that show them the ropes are just as bad.
She probably gets them via a company. She's not out recruiting clients. She goes online to the company she is signed up with to see if they have any students available or she tells them what times she's available and the company notifies her when a kid is available
It would of effect me bad because i am afraid of being sued and being in trouble so out of fear i would immediately pay them and that i wouldn't been able to eat or sleep
Dave Ramsey is absolutely clueless in this one. It is extremely hard to get an IT job without a degree or some sort of certificate or accredited experience these days. It is a hard field to get entry into.
Most folks but not all have some form of certificates or a college degree in IT as either or both are required to get hired. Not sure what planet Dave lives on
Here for advice. Im 19 years old and i live in canada making 22,000 a year after taxes I currently have $20,000 saved up. $5000 is currently in a retirement account and earning approximately 8% per year. Im currently living at home but wants to move out within the next year or two. I have zero debt. Since I only make 22,000 a year how expensive of a house can I afford or get approved for? I wanted to buy a full house instead of an apartment so I can rent out the basement so they can pay off my mortage for me.
YOU borrow MY money and sign a contract promising to pay ME back. YOU take MY money, pay ME for a few months then stop. I sue, YOU get mad and then try to find a way around not paying ME ALL MY MONEY back; the money YOU ALREADY SPENT. Then YOU try to bargain with ME so YOU can KEEP half of the money I gave YOU and want ME to void the orginal contract. I'm sorry but this type of behavior should be a crime. Maybe then people would be forced to think twice when borrowing money.
it is the victim mentality and Dave sides with them always. He also wants to settle for half or less. I'd like to see if they would like to be paid for 20 hours of work one week after working 40. I bet not and nor would Dave.
Until these losers are working 40 hours a week at a real job they need to stop thinking about walking away from their stupid purchases via bankruptcy. How dare they!
On My Way To 50 get a clue...there are a million reasons people get into debt. I owned a family business that went south in a hurry and the minute we went under, we got sued by a bunch of ppl. No ones fault but life happens
