We're forced to take the truck camper off. Something major is wrong with our F350 6.7L Powerstroke diesel. Over the last year we have put 50,000 miles on our truck traveling across the country in our truck camper. We have never taken off the camper, now we have to. We leave Little Rock, Arkansas to head back to our home town of Texarkana. We have an appointment at the Ford dealership for them to evaluate the problem. While waiting we had breakfast at Cafe Lucile we got the call from the dealership and we were not 100 percent sure that the dealerships answer to the problem was correct. So we got a second opinion at Blue Gorilla Garage. We will see what happens.

Just a word of caution, I would always place some sort of cross member supports under the lower side of the camper when working under it, I have never been the type of person to trust any jacks no matter how new they are.

Yeah Buddy!! At 15, marooned on Dad's apt house shingling. On other side of street, my Buddy 4 yrs older had jacked '55 Chevy Coupe up high, removed wheels, used columns of blocks jackin' up four corners, turned up ghetto blaster, & happy as clam. I got bad thought, turned around, yelled, "Hollis, Gramps (his landlord) said he onloaded cinderblocks, you didn't use them did ya? Hollis annoyed as couldn't hear, but creepered back, & yelled, "What..Kafrickin' Blamo!", as car slammed into concrete. All cider blocks granulated, as they tend to do, so Hollis asked, "What did you say?" I responded, "Never mind...it's too late". Hollis still curious, so told 'em' Gramps said he'd unloaded cinderblocks there, & I was afraid you were committin' Sewerside!! I rented apt in Dad's bldg for another 5 years, but it cost me ZERO for Caddy's Maintenance/Repairs, something about, Hollis had said good to be alive!

Once a dealer told me my motor needed to be rebuilt, I didn't have the huge amount of $ they qouted, I told them that I would pick it up after work. When I got there they said good news it didn't need rebuilding, we adjusted the valves. I'll always believe they were trying to scam me big time.

Look into CPX pump, it will fit where Ford placed the CP4 pump. Last thing you need in back country is a fuel system failure that destroys all that comes in contact with fuel with metal chards. Total repair cost after cp4 pump failure ranges from 10-15,000. Worth checking out differentboptions that will work with Ford engines.

Hi guys, a shop owner and mechanic here, it’s sounds like the high pressure pump in the fuel system is failing, a well known issue with the Ford Heavy Duty diesel engines, you can thank Ford engineering for that. Of course proper testing has to be done before that can be called. I have read comments suggesting to not tell one shop what another shop found in their diagnostic process, that’s backwards. A good shop is going to have knowledgeable tech staff working there and can quickly discern if the previous diagnostic sounds correct or if it is a waste of time going in that direction. Try doing that when you visit your doctor. Time is money holds true for mechanical service. Try finding a shop that you trust and stick to them, in the long run it will make your life a bit easier. I’m in my 70’s and have traveled the life road you’re on and can say this, it may be expensive to fix this time but you’ll figure it out together, then just move on and count your blessings because you have each other and enjoy your life.

exactly for once its not just a ford problem, bosch is the culprit. But ignorance with a spoon full of incompetence is so annoying. of course a dealership is gonna come in with their quote because their BIG overhead and in this case actually know what the case is because they have been warrantying them. too bad that the other shop blue whatever just cleaned the metal out of the tank but the metal will build back up in time and ruin the entire fuel system and "Steve and Sarah Newlin" will sell it to someone with the issues that they were "too smart" to fix from the get go.

Haven’t had the problem since. Sometimes it’s the mass air flow sensor that fails and causes it. Hoping you get back on the road with minimal expense!!

One piece of advice I can give is whenever you go to get a second or third opinion(diagnosis) NEVER tell the 2nd or 3rd shop that they are the 2nd or 3rd shop, go in as if they are the 1st If they know they are the 2nd or 3rd shop they will either say things don't need replaced when they really do JUST so they can underbid the previous diagnosis, OR they will say yes that all needs replaced BUT ALSO this this and this, not EVERY shop will but a majority would

I’ve been an HVAC tech for 24 years now and I was about to walk away from the industry as I was convinced every company had become a commission based company and that causes good techs to become dishonest. I moved out of the big city and up in to a small town with a company that’s had the best reputation I’ve ever seen plus parts great wages and benefits and were hourly. PLEASE READ THIS WARNING, IT WILL HELP YOU..................... My Dad used to work for the company that sinks the big fuel tanks in the ground at the gas stations, he has told me countless times to NEVER EVER fill up your car/truck or what ever your driving when ever the big gas truck is there filling the tanks under ground. He said if you see them doing that just go to the next gas station or if you can't then wait at least an hour before you fill up your rig {What ever your rig is} The reason this is, is because when they fill up those tanks under ground, it stirs up all the sediment that is in the bottom of those tanks, rust, sand & what ever else falls into those tanks when they hook up to the ground valve to fill the tanks. Maybe this is what has caused you to have your problems, do you fill up when you see the big Gas Tankers in the station filling up the under ground tanks? So once you get your truck fixed remember what I've told you & hopefully you'll read this note... Dad used to say if you want to have to replace your engine then go ahead & fill up when you see the Gas Tankers filling up the big tanks under ground & you'll have all kinds of problems. I hope this info will help you going forward....

May be a reason that the dealer you went to had immediate availability of an appointment. In hind-sight, might want to see how the reviews of the dealer look. May reinforce the second opinion. I don't rely on dealerships any longer. Much rather depend on a reputable mechanic with positive feedback from prior customers.

When I remove my camper I always lower it down and rest it on wood pallets covered with a sheet of plywood or wafer board. I don't enter the camper until I do, too much stress on the jacks. Keeps it from wobbling. Also I stay away from dealership repairs. I have a diesel mechanic for my F350, and another shop that does all my other repairs. Both came highly recommended and I have NEVER had a problem with either. Several times when I have had a problem and I call the other shop for an apointment they will ask what is it doing and they have told me to try something first and it has taken care of the problem. They are very busy and don't need my buisness that bad for something simple. We are on a first name basis. Good luck on solving your issue, I also worry too much. It pays to have a good mechanic and relationship.

@nogarider1846
@nogarider1846 10 месяцев назад
When I hear metal shavings in the fuel system on a Ford diesel my first my first thought is CP4 high-pressure fuel pump failure. If that's the case then the dealer price of 12K is close to normal for a dealer, but a local shop may be able to do it for less and that is where I would go regardless. The reason the CP4 failure is so costly is that have to replace the fuel injectors, fuel rails, fuel pump, fuel lines, tank and filters, and housing because the shavings can be in all of these parts and it's hard to guarantee they can get all of it out. The reason the shavings are in all these parts is that the fuel pump creates more flow and pressure than the engine needs and there is a relief valve that sends that unneeded fuel back to the tank along with any shavings. The CP4 fuel pumps have been doing this for over 10 years in Ford and Ram started using them I think in 2019 on the Cummings. Then CP4 problem started showing up in RAM and they announced a recall to replace the CP4 with a CP3 however, Ford just kept blaming owners for using dirty diesel. But one can't blame Ford for not issuing a recall, RAM only had to recall 250K trucks, can you imagine the cost of having to recall several years' worth of trucks. RAM may also have an additional incentive because, with some of their CP4 failures the fuel pump has seized and broken the CAM gear connection and when that happens there is a good possibility it will also need a new engine. I enjoy your videos and I wish you the best of luck!.

Anyone with a 6.7 MUST at least install a fuel filter AFTER the pump. If the CP4 fails the filter will catch the shavings before destroying your fuel rails, etc. The 2 filters prior to the pump will not catch the shavings if/when the pump fails. Also... you MUST add lubrication to every tank of fuel to lubricate the CP4 pump. Lastly... like others have stated; there is a good aftermarket pump to replace the CP4 pump.

The CP4 is usually an issue for metal in your fuel system, but it would show up after the regular fuel filter because the regular fuel filter would keep it from circulating into the fuel system at the injector pump. Metal trouble usually starts at the pump strainer when this pump begins a catastrophic event and wipes out all of the injectors. If they won't let you talk to a mechanic, report it to a Ford tech rep. There is no other pump that will fit in the engine bay if you have the Scorpion diesel engine. I wouldn't drive it at all until you speak to other Ford mechanics around the area, by phone or other. Good luck from a Ram 3500 Cummins diesel owner--Ford diesel's sound like sewing machines.
@robertlightfoot273
@robertlightfoot273 9 месяцев назад
The CP4 on Ford diesel trucks has been a problem in the past. The filter after fuel pump I believe was added to the newer model trucks This was done to contain the metal from getting to the rest of your fuel system. A CP4 pump if needed would cost a quarter of quoted price. I believe that you have already taken care of your problem.

Ok, that replacement of the entire fuel system is called shotgunning. If its metal filings related, that would probably have to come from the fuel pump. A lot of modern trucks have a fuel pump in the gas tank because they had a lot of trouble with inadequate fuel pumps blowing up the turbo pumps in trucks. Mine had an external fuel pump and I replaced it with a FASS fuel pump way down by the tank. People were losing high pressure turbo pumps like crazy and I'm the only one in my neighborhood that didn't lose that 4000 dollar pump. Fuel pump, thats my guess.

Cody & Kellie, I hope things go your way. Everything can be fixed, although there are a lot of opinions on how to do it. Most dealers nowadays don't fix things, they just replace them. Just an FYI.... I owned a 2008 Ford F250 that I put 310,000 miles on, before trading it for a new one. I think my wife was more upset than me about trading in the old truck. Everything on it worked, no rattles, still tight, pulled our toy hauler trailer all over the place.... kind of hated to give it up, especially when I saw it driving down the road 1 1/2 years later still in great shape. Best of everything and getting back on the road safely.

Hmmm, so that dealer could fit you in right away, while others had waitlists weeks long. That sounds mighty suspicious, like they have a bad reputation and need to start making money. Policy of not speaking directly to the mechanics is not uncommon in big places though. If theres metal in your filter, the filter works. It doesn't mean the whole system needs to be replaces, unless that metal comes from the high pressure fuel pump (if its a common rail diesel) But if that was the case you would have all kinds of pressure warnings.

Got to to love Ford dealerships. Stuff like going in for an appointment for a recall for a transmission software update, sitting there 2.5 hours to watch the guy spend 10 minutes doing the update. Paying for them to do a tip to tail inspection on a used 2020 "Gold Certified" F-350 bought from the Ford dealer in Nampa, ID who doesn't actually inspect the trucks prior to providing Gold Certification, with the instructions to fix anything they found, getting the truck back and the change oil light is on. Or fun things like different dealerships having different ideas of what is covered under warranty. Just a few of the reasons why someone else owns my 2022 and 2020 Ford F-350's now.

This is quite a common thing for Ford. Usually the fuel pump goes completely out and that’s what puts metal shavings in your filter and they also go through your high pressure fuel rail. That Bosch pump is a huge failure spot for most diesels on the road. Cummins even recommends adding diesel kleen to every tank of fuel so the pump stays lubricated and can prevent this from happening. Or Fors could just be trying to rip you off which they’re also known to do. Best of luck.

I used to run diesels exclusively. For my personal use I’ve gone back to gas. There is nothing that I do that requires the power level of a modern diesel. We haul around an Arctic Fox on a Ford F350 Dually. It’s gas. Yeah, it revs a little more, gets 9-10 mpg with the camper on, where the diesel got 12. But we don’t have any of those expensive diesel problems to deal with. And before anyone goes and jumps on the “it’s a ford, by what ever else brand”, they all have issues, and expensive ones at that. Unless it’s for a business; where the truck makes money for you, it’s not really worth while. I can buy a lot of Gas for 8-12k. Hopefully, it isn’t the fuel system. Best of luck!!

I haven't been a mechanic in over a decade so working on all these new computer systems would drive me insane. It used to be simple to diagnose a vehicle, if it didn't start - check the battery, if it cranks but doesn't turn over check fuel & spark etc etc but nowadays there's a dozen things you need to check. As far as a F150 losing power at high speeds going uphill to me it sounds like the added weight of a camper plus the terrible aerodynamics of a giant wind catcher are bogging the truck down. The engine simply can't breathe, and if it can't get enough air it'll lose power until it eventually dies. The faster you go the more wind resistance the harder the engine will struggle to breathe, add to that going uphill which places the engine under heavy load and you are basically putting a wet towel over your mouth while trying to run uphill with a giant cargo sack on your back. Fuel pump might not be able to provide enough fuel under load either causing the engine to lean out at which point the cpu will go into protection mode and keep you from blowing the motor. It's also very possible you could have clogged cats that are keeping it from breathing properly. Heard those are an issue on some trucks. I don't remember the code they said it threw up but I'd see if the local autozone will lend you a sun diag tool. I don't think they even loan tools out anymore but it's with a shot. I sold mine when I changed careers but those babies could actively read engine sensors. You'd be able to see exactly what's wrong and with an SD card you can record the sensor data to look at later so you drive the truck up a hill to cause the problem then check the sensor data when you get home. Anyways hope y'all get it figured out

Replace the low pressure pump, clean the tank, flush the lines and replace the high pressure pump and left hand fuel rail. No need to replace the injectors unless it’s DEF contamination or lots of metal. All that stuff you changed out was not the problem. Lots of times the metal in the fuel is very hard to see and you need a flashlight to really see it.
