+Jennifer Lorenzo I read in Lucy's autobiography that they did reshoot it, but used the original take instead. I don't think we'll ever see the retake. Unless somebody happened to have a movie camera in the audience. Lol. There is actually behind the scenes color home movie footage of a season 1 episode from an audience member's perspective.
She said it made her think of when she had her first baby, Lucie and all the complications she had, so she became very emotional with her being pregnant again.
Ricky started to cry in thus scene so did Lucy and Ethel sniffled. They wanted retakes but the audience stood up and shouted "no! no!" even Lucy and Ricky didn't want retakes.
I don't care how scripted, or prepared this scene was, that was genuine emotion coming from Lucy. The love a man and a women express for one another when a baby is on the way is extraordinary and beautiful. Here, it's forever captured between Desi and Lucy.
I totally agree Matt. No matter how many times I watch this, the tears flow like rain. Lucy was always so transparent, that's what made her so endearing. She wasn't afraid to take people to their most vulnerable places.
Their reaction at the very end was really spontaneous. This is one of those rare moments. The take called for them to do the song and kiss at the end happily but according to Lucy herself as well as Desi Arnaz the whole scene made Lucy tear up, thinking about their troubles having their first birth with baby Lucie. She began to cry and so did Desi prompting that very tender ending. They wanted to re-shoot it but the audience shouted them down and saying it was perfect and so they kept it! et voila-TV History
Tawnya Arns no, she was pregnant during the filming of this episode, but he knew already (her belly was still very prominent, even with their attempts not to film it).
This is my favorite scene in the entire series! They were so in love, the way they looked at each other and how Lucille shyly cried was so beautiful. Can you imagine watching your parents so in love and holding each other so tight, what a privilege to have that on film.
I'm crying my eyes out lol I sang this to my boyfriend after telling him we're having a baby. We swayed in the kitchen and cried. It was beautiful just like this moment captured.
I remember reading somewhere that this episode was controversial even mentioning that she was going to become a mother because no one had done that on television before. Lucy was the first woman on television to do a lot of groundbreaking things. She was definitely a treasure.
@@r.godfrey5231actually it wasn't her idea it was the producers, Lucy and Desi had thought , that was it and both of them were quite happy to finish ,ILL as children were important to both of them .Jess Oppenheimer, was determined not to lose this huge show watched by 50 million people every week, so he thought what the heck, they would try. tbh, the biggest reason the sensors let it happen was the fact that Lucy and Desi were married in real life, other wise the Story line would maybe never have happened. its come to light recently, that Desi, wanted to finish ,and for them to have a family life, life, but lucy wanted to go on, that maybe didn't help her marriage did it, not that im excusing Desi's behaviour however.
I have been binge watching I love Lucy for like a week now . Last night my 20 year old sat and watched a couple of episodes with me and now he is addicted to it. He says it was funnier that the mess that comes on tv now a days. And he always comments how BEAUTIFUL Lucy is
It’s obvious the love they had for each other. But Desi had that ‘roaming eye’ that Lucy could not, and did not, ignore. Sad. This scene is heart wrenching.
The most touching scene ever! Especially, when we know the story of the struggles of Lucy & Desi ! Lucy was not acting here, She was shedding genuine, joyful tears! Ricky's reaction is so priceless! This is how ALL pregnancies should be regarded respected & loved ,especially today. ,& regardless of the prevailing circumstances of life! This scene is even more stunning , watching it & looking back, today! We are reminded of the 2 marvelous children that Desi.& Lucy had & how they went on to do marvelous things in the world,in spite of the adversity of life! "I LOVE LUCY" was & is an outstanding example of real life! May it go on forever! Thanks so much for sharing it with us!
I love this episode too. I still cry when they rerun it. I cried watching it again today, I played this for my granddaughter. turns out I am going to be a GREAT Grandmother!
I'm so glad that I grew up watching this show because of my mom. Literally love this show and this scene is probably my favorite scene in all the seasons. Besides them having their anniversary in Hollywood. ❤ Lucille and Desi, you guys are incredible and I love you
Such an incredible moment in TV and on this show. Never fails to make me smile. Though this show was scripted, no ad libbing whatsoever, they truly had the emotions of an expecting couple. Though this was their second child, Luci was first, it was a crazy coincidence when this episode aired Lucille gave birth to their son Desi Jr. on the same day. They were glad they decided that Lucy and Ricky would have a son. Though their marriage didn't last it was said that after the divorce they did their best at co-parenting despite Lucille's hectic schedule and Desi's drinking and philandering. She said that they made better friends than they did being a couple. Though this show was only on for 5 years, it's still going almost 60 years later. It's funny no matter how many times you've seen it. Pure genius to everyone affiliated with this show.
I've been rewatching a lot of Lucy during the pandemic, the original, her later series and documentaries. I used to be obsessed with Lucy in highschool and I remember crying when I first saw this episode and it looka like it still had the same effect!
Watching all of these clips after watching "Being the Ricardos" (which was very good) gives me a new perspective on them and their skits, but still Timeless Comedy Gold.
We’re having a baby My baby and me You’ll read in winchell That we’re adding a limb to our family tree While pushing that carriage How proud I will be There’s nothing like marriage Ask your father and mother and they’ll agree He’ll have toys, baby clothes He’ll always come to the right house By and by, when he grows maybe he’ll live in the White House Our future looks brighter But definitely We’re having a baby We’re having a baby We’re having a baby My baby and me
Growing up, I watched reruns of I Love Lucy all the time on Nick at Nite. I was maybe 9 or 10 when I first saw this episode, and it hit me right in the feels! ^__^
You really feel like Desi as Ricky was hearing that Lucy/Lucille told him she was pregnant. There is even today real emotional energy that comes from them. Hands down one of the best acted and most touching moment in all tv history. Seriously even in movie history
