First off, at no point in its history was Liverpool majority Irish or from an immigrant background. But there was a lot of Irish migration to the city during the Famines. I think today about 25% of the population can trace their ancestry back to Ireland. Secondly, I think the actual apathy towards England from some sectors of the community comes from the 70s and 80s when Thatcher placed the city into, so-called, 'managed decline'. Liverpool was left to itself and crime and unemployment rose dramatically.

In the 70s and 80s Liverpool fans were very proud to be English/British you'd see loads of Union Jacks at Liverpool games.

He's not saying it's as fact he's just saying how he feels. Obviously he knows what country he lives in, he's just saying he identifys more with Ireland and Liverpool than he does with England. Tha makes perfect sense to me. I think most of Northern England can relate to Scotland, Ireland and Wales more than they can to Southern England.

It goes deeper than what this man explains. Yes Liverpool is an immigrant city with a big Irish heritage but it’s also to do with the way Liverpool were treated by the Tories and Thatcher in the 80s. They agreed for Liverpool to be allowed to go into ‘managed decline’ so they could spend money in places they preferred. The Tories still to this day have no interest in Liverpool, and vice versa. So it’s a combination. Also people still hold onto stereotypes about Scousers about us being poor, crime-ridden etc. It’s all very unoriginal and untrue. So people with Irish roots growing up in a country that really doesn’t embrace them. Liverpool and Scousers couldn’t be further from the Queen or the Tories who normally run this country. People see England and think of the Royal Family, Margaret Thatcher and the Tories. We want no association with any of that, as they don’t want any association with us. If you aren’t from Liverpool it’s difficult to understand.

I’m from Liverpool and if the city in the state that it is in now was to vote for independence then it would collapse. The guy was right in saying that we are of more immigrant decent, being a predominantly Welsh and Irish city, that’s were the scouse dialect derived from I believe, a merge of Irish and Welsh. The city does have a separate culture and history being the first world city and once the gateway to the new world. And it is dubbed the unofficial capital of North Wales, not Ireland. Liverpool, like London, deserves greater devolutionary powers to grow its own power and redevelop itself as a city, but all out independence is suicide. Oh and in reference to “what country are you in?” I think that is a stupid question, the now Republic of Ireland was once part of the United Kingdom but fought for and achieved independence. Same as Scotland who shares a border with England. London is in England yet has its own government and its own control, whether or not it is the capital, all major cities should have a right to self governance to since only they are fully aware of their own problems and needs that Westminster are oblivious of.

I am Liverpool Born & Bred 59 years of age ... we can not deny that we are English as it says so on The Map. Yet we have a sense of integration with Ireland and Wales because of our proximity and we love The Scotts as well ... Our accent is completely different from the rest of the people in The North West of England. We have a strong belief in unity and support for each other and our politics is on the left. We have a welcoming outlook on people (many people come to Liverpool and stay!) In 1974 we left Lancashire and became Merseyside as we live on the banks of The River Mersey. So Yes we live in England, but we Are Not typically English ! p.s. something I would like to add ... in regard to International Football teams, I support England, Ireland, Wales & Scotland ... when we meet, I just want the best team "on the day" to win!.
