Hi Gents. 👋 You are correct that a lot of people do interprate this song literally about coming home from war, but it is about a relationship. For my mind, that's what makes a song so great is that it can mean so much to so many people. Ian Moss is brilliant on lead in this song, and with the accompanying vocals from Jimmy Barnes (who is my favourite singer of all time) it makes this song sublime. Whilst Ian and Jimmy are at the forefront of the band, don't snooze on the importance if the other members. Phil Small on Bass has written songs like My Baby. Then you have Don Walker on keys/piano who was their man lyricist and gave the band their direction. In fact every band member wrote and contributed songs. This song was written by their drummer Steve Prestwich who played the Maracas here. RIP Steve who passed following surgery for a brain tumour on 16th January 2011 🕊. This song was from their 1982 album Circus Animals. The Ringside concert was in 2003. Chisel disbanded in 1983 but had an album release in 1984 called Twentieth Century of which they had other hits from. Now celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The band has obviously reformed for concerts since, hence this one you've reviewed today. They have re released The Last Stand album and it's available on vinyl right now... In 1982 the band did a concert in Germany. Here is a link from that concert. If you ever think of reviewing Forever now, a song also written by Steve, this has the best sound. The original on Chisel's page has sound issues. Also from this concert, check out A Letter to Alan. It was written for two of their crew, Alan Dallow and Billy Rowe, who where tragically killed in a truck accent. It is beautifully haunting to me. Here is the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zc3gDLjqZyQ.htmlsi=cvSThednseBYjohd From this same concert Chisel did a version of When Something is Wrong With My Baby. Dr_Kap has this song on her big play list of Jimmy and Chisel. This song played a decade later with Jimmy and another legend John Farnham. Here is Chisel's version, starting with Mossy singing, and Jimmy singing the higher part. It more closely reflects on the original Sam and Dave version. Again here is that one- ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eEZ__N-c02U.htmlsi=m6qcyNN1bTGg_Tx9 I could recommend songs for days, but thank you are your review and for getting this music out to the world to share.

When talking about cold chisel talents must never leave out Don Walker keyboards/piano who is the genius who wrote most of their hits!❤😂 This masterpiece however was written by their legendary drummer Steve Prestwich ❤❤❤

Have subbed for this, Chisel are my absolute favourite band. First saw them in the 70s and was at their Last Stand (final) concert before they broke up. They are still No. 1 in my book. As for Jimmy, well, what can you say except ❤❤❤. Check out Jimmy and Joe Bonamassa doing Stone Cold. Bow River from this same concert is top notch

Great reaction.. Jimmy is phenomenal.. John may like khe Sanh which is about a solider returning home from the Vietnam war. The majority of Australians would know most of the words if not all of the words to khe Sanh. Other great cold chisel songs are Cheap wine Saturday night Flame trees Choir girl (written about the emotions behind taking a girlfriend for a abortion) Forever now Star hotel (written about a real life riot that happened when an Australian pub closed permanently upsetting people!!). Most of cold chisel songs have a lot of meaning behind them. Cold chisel have elements of rock, reggae, pop rock, blues, country, gospel etc. Also Jimmy and a stage full of other aussie music legends singing “knocking on heaven’s door” during a memorial is amazing So is Jimmy singing solo with songs like working class man, when a man loves a woman (epic), and also Jimmy singing simply the best with Tina Turner. And of course Jimmy singing duet with John Farnham (when something is wrong with my baby). ❤ from Australia

Great live band - the version of Bow River from this tour is insanely good. If you get a chance check out the Barnestormers from last year - it's a Rockabilly project from Barnesy, Slim Jim Phantopm from the Stray Cats, Chris Cheney from the Living End & Jools Holland from Squeeze and they covered Don Walker (Cold Chisels) "Johnny's Gone" and it's really fun stuff.

Fantastic guys, great discussion, John made some fantastic points. You both picked on the subtleties of this iconic performance from 2003! Jimmys ad-libs complement Ian's singing perfectly..then as you say unleashes in the third verse! Great job guys!

A bit of a slow heartbreaker to start John off on. Plenty more Chisel to check out for him. As far as War / anti war songs go, few did it better than 'I was only 19' - by Redgum. Released more than 40 years ago it still resonates as strongly today as ever. This recent version from the lead singer John Schumann gives a little background on why he wrote it and probably hits even harder. Enjoy? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XwFDncI_i0U.html&ab_channel=StandTall4PTS

Great reaction guys. You should listen to the original album version as it’s quite different to the stripped back, acoustic live version. Amazing song. Also, with John’s connection to war and Vietnam in particular, you should show him “Khe Sanh”, which is absolutely written about a returning solidier struggling to integrate back into normal life. Beyond that, Redgum’s “I Was Only 19” is another brilliant Australian song about the same topic, also Vietnam.

The "war" in this song is a metaphorical one. They are talking about a war in a relationship. Good to see you showing John some great music. I do enjoy your reactions with your sons but i often share your pain when they rate the songs you introduce them to. Ironically, age can open a person's horizons, as opposed to that furphy (Aussie slang) that an old dog can't learn new tricks...one of the worst sayings ever for anyone who understands dogs or life. Anyway, i would love to see you react to Knockin' on Heaven's Door by these blokes. Its another cover that they absolutely kill. This performance was from the mid 2000s but the song was originally written back in the early 80s. I saw Jimmy perform his Soul Deep tour back in 2022. He performed for almost 3 hours straight, didn't stop walking to all corners of the stage so all the audience got a piece of him, was highly entertaining the whole time, and the only break he had was when his daughter came on and sang a song in his set. He went to the side of the stage, stood there watching her perform, and came on and sang the second half of the song with her as a duet. He is an astounding performer...its like he was born into it.

Kasey Chambers - Lose Yourself Aussie Country singer, that performs a very unique take on the Eminem classic and blows it away. Perhaps the best cover I have ever heard of any song. This is starting to go viral now, and for very good reason. Fans at the concert erupted at the performance, and Kasey took to Instagram asking fans for phone footage of the performance. This video was stitched together with that footage. Her father is on the slide guitar. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S70xek3x4ro.html&pp=ygUda2FzZXkgY2hhbWJlcnMgbG9zZSB5b3Vyc2VsZiA%3D

Cold Chisel have some absolute BANGERS!!! "Bow River" from "The Barking Spiders Live" album that you've got to listen to. Simply the best song about going back home. The live version is good, but the vocals are clearer on the album...and the vocals are what it's about

A great ballad and a special performance from their re union tour, about 2003 i think ? About 20 years after they broke up in 1983. Now let John see the ROCK band..... either the gentle Bow River from this 2003 concert or the feral Wild Thing from The Last Stand tour, 1983.

Boys, if you want a song that by its' nature and subject mater should speak to a returned serviceman/vet, try Cold Chisel's first hit "Khe Sanh" which describes the struggles of a Vietnam era vet returning to civilian life. Thanks for your reaction!

Can't agree I have a friend who is a mad John Fareham fan & played his version once, she got upset because I had to go & list to the original version. Slowing the song down ruins it. In saying that John Farnhams version of "Help" by the Beatles is absolutely brilliant
