Due to time constraints it is impossible for me to put out a video on every job I record or even to record every job that I do. As I've told my friends, I have literal terabytes of unedited video in storage. I told Mr. Ed the other day that I could put out a video every week until the end of 2020 even if I didn't record another job and I wasn't exaggerating. Some of it is great and some not so much. Since we do removal jobs along with other work pretty much all year long I never really take a break from recording. Because I record more than one job a week and only have time to edit one video a week at best it's unlikely you'll ever see all of them but it pains me not to show the ones I like so I'm going back through older jobs to edit some of those over the winter.
This video is timely in the fact that Steve's fiftieth birthday is coming up next month and I thought he might enjoy looking back on the work we did together. Happy birthday Steve Payne.
Here is the link to the other video Steve was in with us at Marshall Space Flight Center. That video was made possible by Thad Strippling and Yappy Beeman on RU-vid. • Bee Inspections at NAS...

This may have had something to do with the hot, humid conditions. Bees don't sink heat very efficiently, and severe heat forces them to reduce their activity levels so they don't accidentally cook their own hive.

Its weird, innit? I know beekepers who never even get near their hives unveiled, and are regularly attacked at least by the guardians at the entrance. @@franziskafrosch9606 you mean - dont worry, bee happy? *sorry* Its possible. A teacher of mine who kept bees was sure that his state of mind was relevant to the hives reaction, because when he tried to teach his wife, who was afraid of bees, some basics, the hives would be much more agitated than when he himself got in to it. And you can find pictures of chinese contests, where they basically try to get as many bees on their body as possible, by attaching several queens to their clothing. There was a winner who was weighed in with about 250k individual bees plastered all over his nearly bare body, covered in 35 kilos of living, crawling workers. While I got stung regularly even with PPE when I dabbled. I stopped because of that and a worsening allergy. But it stays a mystery.

Depends on where you live. From what I understand, most southern locations in the US tend to have more aggressive bees because of crossing with Africanized bees. The further north you are, the more chill.thr bees. I know many bee keepers who handle their bees with little to no protection.

@Ben Anderson you kind of answered that question yourself. Different species have different temperaments. Some bees are incredibly gentle as long and you are calm others not so much. As for killer bees their man's evidence of why you should be careful about messing with nature and cross species breeding not that it's stopped them🤦(just cause you can doesn't mean you should). Killer bees are an artificial crossing of bees and wasps while coming out more aggressive, poisonus, and pretty much ten times more dangerous than either of their parent species. You can thank humanities thoughtless scientists for that one.(not that all scientist are this way but this is one of those idiot moments with long lasting consequences that makes you wonder why why why did you not make sure that they wouldn't be a problem before releasing these violent creatures to haunt you descendents with your idiocy?)

@William McCaslin Absolutely. I ran into a swarm like this when I was cutting grass one summer years ago. I never saw them until I was right under the swarm on the side of a large tree, maybe three feet away. I started to ditch the tractor and run, then realized they were extremely docile. A few flew around me to check me out and one head-butted me, but that was it. The owner called a beekeeper, who calmly removed the swarm and the queen to place in a hive. He didn’t even wear a suit or gloves, which blew my young mind. No one got stung, few, if any, bees were harmed, and it completely changed my outlook on these awesome creatures. I doubt I would’ve had the same experience in the Southwest, but in Ohio, it was eye-opening.
@allanmason3201
@allanmason3201 4 года назад
@@michaelandcolinspop Beekeeper of twelve years here. What you saw with the swarm is typical swarm behaviour. There's debate about why bees are so docile when swarming, but a swarm that has relatively recently landed in a temporary resting place can (generally) be handled with little concern for stings. Their focus is on finding a new place to live, and they have no honey or brood to defend, so they'll usually only sting if really provoked. What's going on in this video is very different. The whole colony has been exposed (remember - the interior of a beehive is normally almost completely dark) and the colony is being ripped apart with - as far as I've seen - no use of the smoke that beekeepers normally use when inspecting their hives, yet the bees are just calmly walking around on the comb as if nothing at all unusual is going on. DirtRooster says in another reply that it was very hot, and his experience is that bees are calmer then. I've kept bees in Italy, and that's not my experience, but I wouldn't be surprised if the local strain of bees makes a huge difference in behaviour. I'm also certain that DirtRooster's calm, methodical approach and the way he takes care not to squash bees is also a big factor.

My grandpa was a passion bee keeper to the Day he passed. No one in our family wanted the Bees and so we gave them away to another elderly gentlemen who lived 20 miles off our place. He brought us honey for free. Damn this is long ago, I was a lil boy back then 8yrs old. Now I am in my mid 50's. Bees became rare here in germany...too much toxicity of chemical industry PLUS people nowadays don't want to raise bees and taking responsibility to care for them. Keep up good work, sir. Turns out the bees moving in was a blessing for the homeowners and a nightmare for you. Good thing you had Steve and your wife to help you out or else you'd have run out of dry shirts to wear. When I was at chemistry class in high school, I think it was my 1° year (we have 3, not 4 like in the US), my teacher said that hexagons are the most efficient way to build a hive because it is the shape that takes less material to build and is the strongest. Circular, square, not good enough! She said this is why bees use it, and you can see it in a lot of places in nature like organic chemistry, it is pretty much based in hexagons, because when creating a chain or a structure it's easier for the atoms to stick together with as little connections as possible!!!!

The best introductory advice I've heard is to avoid bees and hives if you've drank alcohol or worn perfume/cologne within the last 24 hours. Also have a couple Benadryl tablets in your pocket and take them immediately after a sting; even a minute's delay reduces their effectiveness. Move slowly and don't harm them and they won't go into attack mode.
