After years of sitting in a barn, we drove the famous Emergency! Ward LaFrance Engine 51 Replica. Listen to the start-up, POV drive, and exploration of each compartment of this firetruck in our video.
This, along with the Squad 51 replica in our other videos belonged to my friend Mike who recently passed away. He wanted them to be at his memorial, so they needed to get cleaned up and driven over.
The Ward was surprisingly easy to drive at low speeds but became a bit of a challenge over 40mph. Besides a broken speedometer (thanks to Jaime to give me speed read outs as we went), almost everything works, and the engine ran super well. I didn't adjust the air-ride seat before starting out, so that brought some mild entertainment to driving it (and to this video), but otherwise it was very fun to drive! We didn't get a chance to test the pumps or the tanks, those certainly have not been used in decades, but we did try out the lights and sirens and those work great.
These fire apparatus will make their way in the next few years to the Oregon Fire Service Museum at Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks, Oregon. We will keep caring for them until then!
