After years of sitting in a barn, we drove the famous Emergency! Ward LaFrance Engine 51 Replica. Listen to the start-up, POV drive, and exploration of each compartment of this firetruck in our video.
This, along with the Squad 51 replica in our other videos belonged to my friend Mike who recently passed away. He wanted them to be at his memorial, so they needed to get cleaned up and driven over.
The Ward was surprisingly easy to drive at low speeds but became a bit of a challenge over 40mph. Besides a broken speedometer (thanks to Jaime to give me speed read outs as we went), almost everything works, and the engine ran super well. I didn't adjust the air-ride seat before starting out, so that brought some mild entertainment to driving it (and to this video), but otherwise it was very fun to drive! We didn't get a chance to test the pumps or the tanks, those certainly have not been used in decades, but we did try out the lights and sirens and those work great.
These fire apparatus will make their way in the next few years to the Oregon Fire Service Museum at Powerland Heritage Park in Brooks, Oregon. We will keep caring for them until then!

Being a firefighter/paramedic for 36 years that's pretty nice. You need to change the light bars on the roof and the mini light bars on the back to the correct single rotator on the roof and take the blue lights off the front and the lights off from under the bumper. I drove a Ward LaFrance like that on a volunteer fire department for a few years when I was younger.

Thank you Ken for your service! And I appreciate this comment very much. Mike specifically wanted those light bars and the blue lights, he talked a lot about them and how they were not exact to engine 51, but that’s how he wanted it. Although nobody else here told me why they were so upset at the way that it looked, I now remember that he added those 😇

I got to sit in the original engine 51 when it was in Yosemite and it was a thrill! I grew up watching the show so it was so great to see the engine and sit in it.

Between it and the 1965 crown, these are probably the most identifiable firetrucks out there

I’ve been learning about Crown! There is a 1980 here in oregon that needs a new home.

You really cant call it a replica. It is a Ward LaFrance and it is numbered 51, other than that...

In California, only police have blues, so this fails in looking authentic. Aside from the yellow stripe, "Oregon", light bar, and a whole bunch of other differences... but it's cool that you're keeping the rig in working order
@BadIdeasGarage
@BadIdeasGarage Год назад
Yup! You may have heard in the video that Mike had some personalizations he wanted to make to the Engine, and now it’s with the Oregon Fire Service Museum. They’ll take good care of it 😀

So are you planning on re-decaling it to LACFD, like the TV show vehicles?
@BadIdeasGarage
@BadIdeasGarage Год назад
Mike had his own ideas about how both of them should look, a combination of his own desires, the show, and LACFD. The museum he wanted them to be donated to now has possession, and will determine what to do from here.

The real E51 form the show served in a national park after the show then the LACo Fire Museum bought it years ago and rehabbed it and has had it to this day. This is not the real truck.

@@BadIdeasGarage "We start and drive THE famous EMERGENCY Engine 51"...yes it says replica, so it's not the famous E51 it's a replica. So why even call it the famous E51?
