Linda Blair was so convincing, that people literally feared her in real life. She couldn't go to normal school and she really didn't have an acting career beyond this movie. The Oscars are rarely fair to the children who act in these films. Brie Larson got that Oscar for Room and I was shocked as her performance was only a pale shadow to that of the boy playing her son. The Oscars also tend to be deaf to the financial struggles of CG VFX studios who produce the CGI effects for films, they gave an Oscar to the people who did the effects for Life of Pi literally right after their studio went bankrupt and rushed them off the stage to prevent them talking about it.
@rustincohle2135

@@mnomadvfx Linda Blair actually lost the Oscar to a 10-year-old girl; Tatum O'Neal for "Paper Moon". Blair did win the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and she WAS expected to win the Oscar, that is until it was made public that Linda Blair didn't actually do the voice of the demon-- Mercedes McCambridge voiced the demon and she requested that she remained uncredited so that the focus wouldn't be taken away from Linda Blair's onscreen performance. But after the movie became the highest grossing film of all time, and got rave reviews, and received 10 Oscar nominations, and once Blair was touted as the inevitable winner for the Oscar, Mercedes McCambridge then demanded to be credited for her voice work. This fact however didn't become public until after the Oscar nominations and when it did, it pretty much killed Blair's Oscar chances.

My theory as to why Regan hugged Father Dyer is that when Karass fought the demon out and it entered him, she had a glimpse at his collar. Then when she saw Dyers collar, she recognized it and wanted to thank him for saving her life. I could be completely wrong, I’m sure the book has more of an explanation to that part. That is my take away from it:)

Detective Kindermin jokes with the priests as an emotional defense mechanism to prevent his own nervous breakdown from the horrors he sees on a daily basis as a homicide detective. By Exorcist 3, Detective Kindermin and Father Dyer are both as emotionally broken as Father Karras. @@tashatipton2141 Now you need to see Exorcist 3. Detective Kinderman is portrayed by another actor but it's still a good movie. Not as scary as the original but still a good story. Completely skip part 2 because that one is just boring and way off. the scene where Father Marrin is found dead....if you look at the girl, Pazuzzu, not the devil, you can see a hint of sadness in her face. Let's just say that the demon and Marrin have had a long history. He had already perform an exorcism on a young boy who was the exact same demon. there are two prequels depicting that story. the movie studio didn't like the first version and ordered it remade and put that out theatrically. later because of fan demand, they release the other one on home video. anyway, Pazuzzu is sad that his enemy is gone but of course being evil, it gives in back to enjoying what it did. Evil vs Evil. in the middle east, some people will actually pray to evil gods and devils to protect them from other evil entities. mainly cuz those demons and gods are rivals of each other. weird. Pazuzzu was often prayed to for protection.

I watched this at 10 years old in the theatre then walked home through the woods. KEY POINT most people miss, the movies is really about the Priest (Damien Karras) and his soul. Satan was after him the whole time trying to get him to renounce his faith. He used his mother's death, he could have been a pro boxer and taken care of his mother better, but he chose the Priesthood, so Satan gave him guilt. Satan wanted him to renounce his faith, thus when he asked the Demon to take him at the end, Satan achieved his goal, it was never about the girl, the Demon could have just stayed in her, the goal was to capture the Priests soul. P.S. That is why people think it JUMPS AROUND, it doesn't, the story is really about the Priest. The added clips make it a little long, watch the Theatrical version.

It just goes to show you, It's always something. Anyway, in season two there's an episode entitled "Somehow, the Devil got behind me" that follows three Demons at the end of their shift and you hear them talk about what they were doing. You all can imagine watching this in a dark movie theater, where no one is talking, and watching the movie in surround sound full blast. Then imagine watching this back in 1973 when none of this language had ever been heard in a movie before. I was 17 when The Exorcist came out. I went to see it with my two brothers on a Saturday night. The next morning, we all got up and went straight to mass. It scared the crap out of us. It has always been my favorite horror movie. I have watched it many times over the years, and I still love it. You all did a great job, but to get the full impact, you need to watch it in the dark, loud, and no talking. Try it you'll like it.

Yes, I too saw this at the cinema in the 1970s, and the fearful gasps and screams of the audience was louder and more scared than I have ever heard since. Some people fainted and had to be attended to by first-aiders (St John Ambulance Brigade waiting in the foyer). The reaction to the girl scuttling on her back down the stairs was full on screams!!! What a experience though.

There is an article from Screen Rant about the Curse of making The Exorcist with former child actor turned adult actor, Linda Blair. You are right about Linda (little girl). She did get seriously injured during making of this movie. That young Priest is played by Jason Miller who has his son named Jason Patric and Miller's father in Law was Jackie Gleason. Gotta remembered this movie was made before GCI effects. Regan's evil creations was developed by world known makeup artist named Dick Smith who lived to be 92 until 2014. His team created a puppet model of Linda Blair for those evil possessions. I have seen this movie when it came out in 1973 when I was 9.

@15:32 The delayed reaction of "close your eyes!" had me dying laughing! I remember my mom doing that to me when I was little. Great reaction video. This movie can give you the creeps even watching it in broad daylight. The many subliminal flashes of the demon's face throughout the film, and the spider walk down the stairs get me every time! Also, it was Ellen Burstyn who suffered injury to her spine on the set, not Linda Blair, but it was not a broken back, but she took a beating during the scene where she's yanked across the room by the harness after she's slapped. This was very extreme for 1973, especially the "Black Mass" scene with the desecrated Virgin Mary statue.

The Iraq scene implies that the demon/ evil has existed even from the primordial past. Fr Merrin has done exorcism before and possibly met this demon. The battle between and the demon will conclude in this movie. Aside from demon possession it's a story of the priest seeking redemption and made the ultimate sacrifice. Fr khais faith was terribly weakened due to the guilt from his mother's death. His redemption came when Regan's mother desperately asked if her daughter will die. Realizing that he could not allow another tragedy to happen Fr Kharis returned to the room determined to save the child from the demon. This regained his strength and faith. NOTE : Back then Catholics believed suicide is a sin. So the scene where Fr Kharis confesses his sin before he dies was necessary in order for him to received salvation. Yes the Demon did not die that's why you need to watch part 3. The medallion for Catholics are like icons and signs that remind or visually give us direction to God. In the final scene the possessed girl /demon actually REMOVED it from Fr. Damian so it could transfer it's spirit to the priest and possessed him Please watch EXORCIST III . Considered a direct sequel and a conclusion. It will suppose to answer some questions. Skip part 2-- Not that good

Linda Blair has talked about what she went through on set, with her back being seriously injured, close to being hypothermic with the scenes in the walk in freezer, and several other issues. That's how the scenes with being able to see their breath were done. A large freezer had a bedroom built inside of it, and many times between shooting Linda Blair was left laying on the bed with only a night gown on in freezing temperatures. Many of the scenes would be illegal to do today, due to the various laws passed to protect child actors and actresses. Even later on when she was older, she had issues trying to date and make friends, people always saw her as the "possessed girl" and it left her feeling alone and unloved for a really long time due to people not being able to get over her role in the film as a child.

Just for info's sake, this movie and novel was based on an actual event; in the actual exorcism it was a boy that was possessed and the priests evolved survived including the boy. The exorcism took longer than in this movie. There has been a movie made back in the 90's based on the official Church approved exorcism called "Possessed" with Timothy Dalton (who acted in a few James Bond movies) plays the main Exorcist, this one is more realistic then The Exorcist, with far less gore and special affects, it has more of a psychological approach to it than shock tactics, although it is hard to find this movie today on DVD but I think that you can find it on RU-vid. Do yourselves a favour and watch the documentary called the "Curse of The Exorcist" it will help you understand the movie better.

The detective struck up a genuine friendship with Karras earlier in the movie. At the end, his friendship lived on through Fr Dyer, who says “I’ve seen it” then smiled as if to say, “I knew Karras said that to you.” It was a way of coping with the traumatic loss of Karras. Unfortunately, the movie just makes it look like the detective is going around asking random priests on dates to the movies.

It is "The Godfather" of mainstream horror movies. It reaches the absolute level of mainstream cinematic art like 'The Dark Knight' practically did for comic book movies. The effects in this movie really really hold up like it's 'Terminator 2' and it truly seems to not have lost its touch with newcomers what so ever. Excellent reaction dudettes! I did of course notice that you gals watched 'The Version You Never Seen'. I adore both versions as I have the blu-ray copy that's kinda like reading a book and has two discs for each version individually. My dad saw this in a theater when he was in his 30s and my mom said he came out white as a sheet! He refuses to watch it again. Lol. Father Merrin is played by legendary Swedish actor Max von Sydow who regularly starred in Ingmar Bergman films. There is a famous image of him as a medieval knight returned from the Crusades playing chess with a black-robed, white-faced Death on a stony beach in Sweden from Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" in 1957. There is a prequel to "The Exorcist" about Father Merrin's first encounter with the demon Pazuzu starring Stellan Skarsgard as a young Merrin in East Africa called "The Exorcist: The Beginning" from 2004 directed by Renny Harlin with some really terrifying scares that had people moaning with fear in the audience! Lee J. Cobb, who played the investigator, was a veteran character actor from the '30's-'70's who was in too many classic movies to count. One of his many, many memorable roles was as the hold-out Juror #3 in "Twelve Angry Men". I thought your interpretation that he was the devil or the devil's familiar seeking invitation was very intriguing although that wasn't Friedkin's intent. The investigator's passion for film is his mechanism to cope with the unpleasantness he encounters in his work and the last shot has him, a defender of the world, walk away side-by-side with Father Dyer, a defender of the spirit, from the site of their most recent trauma represented by the boarded-up window through which Karras flung himself. Another really good movie about demonic possession is "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" directed by Scott Derrickson in 2005. The William Peter Blatty book William Friedkin adapted for this movie is based on a real incident in Missouri in 1949. A lot of freaky and spooky things happened during the film's production including a set fire, the deaths of nine people involved in the film, a back injury from a botched stunt suffered by Ellen Burstyn and a bit player who actually murdered someone for real six years later. The famous shot of Father Merrin standing in a shaft of light piercing the gloom outside the MacNeil residence is based on Rene Magritte's series of paintings called "Empire of Light". The green goop was split pea soup and the projectile vomit that splats in Karras' face was actually supposed to hit his chest! His shock is totally real! Linda Blair's incredible performance left such an indelible impression, she could never escape being associated with the role. Mercedes McCambridge, a veteran character actress from the '40's-'80's who lent support to many of Hollywood's leading ladies, was the voice of Pazuzu. She achieved the desired effect by gorging on raw eggs, chain-smoking and binge drinking before reading her lines! Fortunately, you elected to see the Director's Cut which features the famous "spider-walk" scene where a contortionist stand-in for Blair scuttles downstairs bent-over backwards like a spider! Karras' faith is renewed by his experience and the shock of Merrin's death. Only then is he able to expel Pazuzu from Regan by offering himself as a tasty alternative. Pazuzu opts for the priest's soul over the child's as the greater prize but is thwarted by the priest's newfound will from seizing full control long enough for Karras to leap to his death thereby denying Pazuzu a host. When Regan kisses the priest's cheek, it indicates to the audience she has been freed of the demon's grip. She has no conscious recollection of what occurred but seeing Dyer's collar stirs a subconscious compulsion to express gratitude. Some devout Christians feel this movie glorifies evil but it is actually a powerful example of the renewal of faith! Jason Miller, who played Father Damien Karras, is Jason Patric's dad.

You guys are totally right when you said that The Exorcist is "unsettling" THIS is what makes this movie different from all others. I made this comment about the movie on another post........... The thing about The Exorcist that makes it so powerful is that it's not only scary; it's disturbing. It doesn't just "scare" you; it OFFENDS you. It's almost emotionally unsettling to a degree. Yeah, the film has some of the most shocking scenes ever put on screen, but its underlying, documentary-style message of faith, guilt and good-vs- evil just pulls you in and doesn't quickly let go. When you combine that with the superb writing/acting/cinematography/sound/effects, there's no horror film like it. You can quickly get over a jump scare, but The Exorcist does more than that; It stays with you (whether you like it or not Lol)

The relationship between the detective and the father picks up in Exorcist III: Legion with George C. Scott and Ed Flanders playing the roles respectively. It's a nice relationship and the parts of the third movie taken from Blatty's novel Legion fit well together. It's very different from the first movie but there is one scene of suspense directed by Blatty that is masterful in its timing. It's worth a look. The second movie (first sequel) is a strange beast and most critics jump past it to get to the third movie.

That's the beauty of movies in the 70's, they were taken seriously. The subject matter was irrelevant. Filmmakers of that time understood what is forgotten today, ...story is King. And you developed those damn characters, ...everything else is a mere prop. You make the people real, as human as possible. All the slow drag you mentioned is more responsible for why you cared and were frightened for these people. The slow drag and everydayness subtly allows you to get to know the characters without realizing it. As you actually do with real people in your life, the minutiae. Thus the horror becomes more intense. Your imagination engaged. Horror is an experience of the mind. To put it in terms you can understand: All he did was make you believe there was a monster under your bed and like the child, your imagination takes care of the rest. It was truly the height of filmmaking.
