Despite a long cultural history of whaling in Japan, there has been no legal commercial fishing by the country done since the 1980s. And while once a common source of protein, changing tastes by Japanese consumers and negative stigma of whaling have dwindled demand for Japan’s stockpile of whale meat. Recently, however, Japan announced it will return to commercial whaling First, we heard the ordinary Japanese people’s perception of whale meat and the whaling industry. We then visit one of the few remaining whale meat restaurants in Tokyo to see how perception and legal changes have affected business.

Since the population of whales is declining and whale meat isn't even popular anymore, whaling is unnecessary today.

.... Stop eating things that are endangered. Doesn't seem that hard.

It would be really nice to have the Japanese language parts with accessible captions. I am blind and using text to speech technology but that doesn't help when the subtitles are not accessible.

I’m an older guy and I never met a person who eats whale. Not even my wife’s parents who live in the country side eat it. It’s just a niche thing. I don’t see it ever becoming popular again. The restaurant owner is just saying that to boost sales.

As a Japanese from Kyoto, I don’t really think it’s common to eat whale in current society. I didn’t even eat it when I was a student. Also, for the young generation, we do care about the eating habit of the whale but we also do not care about it. And I think that’s how this ends in the near future.

The owner was uninformed and not adept at logic. Things like "we did it before and they didn't go extinct, so it should be fine to do it now". Circumstances change, populations grow, one major controllable factor that put us in this situation was exactly that 300 years of whaling. Hey, maybe whales were going to be screwed all along. A lot of conservation seems to be saving animals that were screwed anyway. But it wasn't a good argument.

This man is working in a very niche part of the foods and beverage industry. Even to his own admission, there are only a handful of whale meat restaurants in Japan. Competition is very low. Those that who enjoy whale meat will only go to these handful of restaurants and pay an appropriate premium amount to satiate their niche cravings.

“Whale” is not a species. Are there certain endangered species of whales? Are they the ones being hunted and eaten? That would be important to clarify.

鯨は絶滅危惧種ではありません。シロナガス鯨などの一部の種が絶滅危惧種なのであり、日本が捕っているミンク鯨やイワシ鯨など種の鯨はどんどん増えており、

I don't agree with whaling too, but why it seems the blame heavily put on Japan, many Europe countries & NA Countries did it too, probably even more than Japan. Even that restaurant owner bought an import whale meat.

"General Douglas MacArthur, who effectively ruled Japan during the post-war Allied occupation, decided the Japanese should get protein from the sea. In 1946, he authorized two military tankers to become giant whaling ships and helped usher in a new era of industrial whaling in Japan. A generation of Japanese children grew up eating whale meat in school lunches."
