So true. So much of the stuff that comes out of the various social or "soft" sciences rely heavily on how people people feel or from stats that can be interpreted dozens of different ways. This subjective data lends itself to heavily biased conclusions and in the end the accepted "facts" are really just whatever ideas are most popular at the time. I'm personally skeptical of anything that can't be backed up by cold hard objective data.

My college and home are in New Hampshire (which is 93% white) and i'm asian, so my answers would be pretty different from yours. I really can't be among people of my own race whenever i want. The person who wrote this doesn't see the problem with that question and appears to think of that as some sort of benefit. Even if they are talking about white people, with 73% of the US being white, yeah, it wouldn't be hard to find a group of people of my race... but the real question is how many people out there really care about that? My family lived in a predominantly black neighborhood, I had many friends, none were white and we all met up at the green box on the corner. However, I don't resent or regret my experiences one bit! I truly believe the whole race issue was only started to divide the huge and ever- growing group of underprivileged in our society. it's so frustrating to me that so many people don't seem to understand what "white privilege" even is. They seem to think that it means "ALL white people are privileged and NO one from a minority race is". That is not what white privilege is. It doesn't mean that if you're white, you're guaranteed a good life, and if not, you're guaranteed a bad one. What it ACTUALLY means, is that white people (specifically in North America and Europe, where white people make up the vast majority of the population) are generally discriminated against less than people from minority races. They're less likely to be suspected of criminal activity; they statistically receive less harsh sentences for the same crimes as those of minority races (like for example, a white guy steals a car...it's his first offense...no prior criminal record, maybe he gets a few months in lockup and some community service...a Mexican or a black man steals an identical car in the same place, and is judged in the same court, and it's also their first offense with no prior criminal record, they get a couple years in prison. BTW, those sentences aren't exact...I was just guessing to make my point); when minority races apply for jobs, home rentals, etc., they're less likely to be approved than white people (especially when whoever is making the decision is white, or the majority of the community is white); minorities are less likely to get scholarships when applying alongside white people with equal credentials; etc. I could give a thousand examples. If you're white, you can still be poor...you can still have a tough time in school...you can still be harassed by police...you can still have a hard time finding work or housing...and in areas where the community is made-up of mostly a minority race, you can still be discriminated against. "White privilege" is a general concept that doesn't ALWAYS apply in every situation. I think calling it "majority privilege" might make it a little easier to understand, because that's a more accurate term. Wherever there is any sort of diversity, the majority group (whatever that group may be) will always have the potential for a better life with more opportunities than any minority group. "Potential" is the key word there. It's certainly not guaranteed. I'm a white male that grew-up in a small town in the Pacific Northwestern U.S., with a population that was probably 95% white, and I've had a lot of friends from minority races throughout my life, and I know first-hand that they were treated differently. On the flip side, I'm also openly gay, and have definitely been treated differently as a result (despite being on the masculine side, and not "obviously gay"). I've been harassed by employers and even fired from jobs for it (and they got away with it, because they just made-up some b.s. reason to fire me, and I couldn't prove anything or afford to hire a good lawyer). I also have some piercings, and wear a lot of black; I'm in to hard rock; love all things horror; etc....those things have gotten me followed around in stores almost every time I walk in to one (not so much in the bigger cities...but certainly in smaller towns), and often judged unfairly. It's also hard to find work. The point is that those who are part of minority groups, ESPECIALLY when their minority "status" is clearly visible (like skin color), are discriminated against more than white people (again, simply because they're the majority), and generally don't have quite as many opportunities available to them (or at least have to work twice as hard for those opportunities). Again..."white privilege" does not mean all white people are guaranteed "privileged" lives, or that minority races can't live lives of privilege...it means that the POTENTIAL for opportunities is greater for white people in places where they are the majority (which is MOST places in North America and Europe...the only real exceptions being certain neighborhoods in urban areas), and the POTENTIAL for experiencing discrimination is greater for minorities in areas where their race or "group" is the minority. Here's one last simple example in case you still don't get it. Say you apply for a job...you're white. The only other applicant is black. You both have the same education, same credentials, clean backgrounds, equally good references, and the same level of experience. You both are well dressed and well-spoken in your interviews, and are equal in every way that matters. Chances are, the person giving the interview and/or deciding who to hire is white (I'm not suggesting that is necessarily due to white privilege...only that with white people being the majority, chances are, that person will be white. Mathematically speaking)...or say there's a group of people making the final decision...chances are, the majority of that group is white. So with 2 applicants that are equally qualified and did an equally good job in the application and interview process, the white applicant is more likely to get the job. It could be that whoever made the decision is blatantly racist...but maybe they're not racist at all, and their choice is one that to them seems based on something logical, but subconsciously it has more to do with them being more comfortable hiring someone of their own race, or the race of the majority of their employees. Statistically speaking...that is the reality. That's what white privilege boils down to. Life is potentially easier if you belong to a majority group.

I'm glad I'm not the only one confused by all this. You can spin all these answers in a way to show white privalage if you answer either way. So you worry about what the correct response is. Plus saying that something exists that you can't see, you're not aware of but you use it without consciously being aware of it makes you racist is confusing. They say racism us taught but if I can't consciously stop it from happening cuz I subconsciously benefit from this is mind blowing. I mean no disrespect to anyone of any race but if you can show to me so someone makes choices based off race I will stand with you against it (that being said it can't be just because a white person was a better (or equal) choice for a job than a black person). There must be honest proof that the choice has been made on skin colour alone. I refuse to be made to feel guilty because someone I have no control over chooses to like me and gate someone else. I can only be responsible for my actions. Thank you guys for doing this and showing just how much this could pertain to anyone. If you're raised to be responsible and act responsible, show compassion to others and cooperate with others chances are opportunities will come to you more often than if you don't, regardless of colour. It's getting to the point where a white person us afraid to comment because if they don't agree they're racist and if they do agree they're just pretending to be helpful or they can't be helpful regardless just because their skin colour means they can't. We have to be better people than that. I'm not suggesting racism isn't alive and well but that it can be against anybody. If you choose to segregate others based on their skin colour it's just wrong regardless if it's white on black, black on black or even black on white (or any other combination of whatever colour you choose). If we are so busy looking for things to divide us we won't ever realize that we have more in common than differences. It comes down to testing others the way you would want to be treated.

I befriended a girl in school who immigrated from Sudan, both of us being immigrants is what bonded us. As kids, we don’t see skin color as a barrier, we just want a friend to play with. Most of the things on this list lean more toward class than race. I grew up in the south in a trailer park, raised by my grandparents because my mother was in jail and I didn't know my dad. I still live in a trailer and in a pretty low income area. I've been followed around stores, I've been pulled over by the cops and pulled out of the car in the cold with my infant son and had my car searched by the cops and dog because of the county listed on my license plate. I get called white trash, I've been denied to just LOOK at an apartment because the man who was renting it said "You can't afford this" based on the car I drive. 2:15 I'm a white man and I've been followed through stores before, when I was a teen. You know why I noticed them following me? Because I was stealing shit! I don't notice those things anymore because I don't do that anymore.... I'm sure I still get followed though because I'm strange and awkward. But since I'm not on the lookout, I don't notice. Well besides the last time I went to Walgreens, they thought I might be trying to run out with something but I was just looking for a shopping cart, after already grabbing items. Didn't think I'd need one so I went back to the front to get one and they ALL were staring at me like I was about to run out the door! I don't mind the eyes though. You can never really tell who may be trying to steal stuff since not just one "group"(race and looks mean nothing) of people do the stealing. Young, old, rich and poor, every one group of people has stolen stuff before.. I hate all this "grouping" people under specific types. We are all individuals with individual experiences and lives. Anyone can be anything, for the good or the bad of it. But today people tell you "oh you're X?" "then you must know about Y.." They get the *who* and the *what* mixed up. WHAT you are is less important than WHO you are. One you can't control and the other is your actions and ideas.... What someone is doesn't affect others around them but WHO you are does affect others around you. A perfect example to this is being in line late at night at a convenience store. I had a white guy around my age and a black guy that was a little younger than I in line with me. That is WHAT they were which didn't affect me but WHO they were did. The white guy was drunk and had an attitude and the black guy had a smile and looked friendly. Which one do you think made me feel uncomfortable while I was in the line? The drunk rude white guy... But I'm white so shouldn't I be fine with him? HELL NO.... It was their ACTIONS that mattered. Not their immutable characteristics...

Regarding the second point: Walmart trains their employees with the mentality that asking if they can help you and being over friendly will deter shoplifting. Mainly because it shows that you're not invisible. And partly because you may feel more guilty for stealing from such a nice company. So, is it race based? No. Is it part of asset protection? Yes.
@dirus3142
@dirus3142 3 года назад
That is a general idea in retail. A person who wants to shop lift is less likely to do so if they know people know they are there. However it's also good customer service in general to acknowledge a customer, and make yourself approachable for help if needed. However retail companies have a bipolar view on theft. Some will bend over backwards to appease a thief because they do not want to be mean to a potential customer. Or they are afraid for being sued for "racism". Unless you are on the west coast or Chicago were the government is preventing police from arresting thieves.
@paulghignon4092
@paulghignon4092 3 года назад
Most stores don't even see this as a shoplifting deterrent. I've seen many retail companies that have a "10 foot rule", in which you're supposed to say hello to any customers who walk within 10 feet of you and have it feel natural. People who are intent on stealing will steal regardless, but it does help in which they feel someone is watching them constantly; or as they put it in clerks, honesty through paranoia.

Most folks, I think, would look at it as the compliment it was intended, but the person looking for an issue would respond with a jerk question. Something like, " DO YOU NOT THINK A PERSON OF COLOR CAN BE OPEN MINDED?". Anything can be twisted to fit a narrative.

Yep most people are retarded and end up believing or valuing something which empowers a manipulative minority peddling that bullshit belief or intangible value, so you end up with wealth privilege gained from followers valuing what is being sold to them (usually something intangible so no work actually has to be done or earned). All life must value it's experience in order to be able to make decisions for survival (if something is either good or bad for your survival all life keeps some kind of memory of these interactions/experiences to be valued and later used to make future decisions), there's a tiny minority that understands this inherent logic of value can actually be exploited. Even a frigging plant has a simpler system of chemical logic that'll make it grow towards light etc... People will do anything to obtain or defend what they value it's in our very nature for survival. Try and take food away from a hungry wolf and you'll see the system in action.

In other words, it assumes that white people think a certain way (stereotype #1), and then presents a stereotype (like the one about how one's physical appearance or body odor represents the entire race). "Hey, you know that stereotype about white people thinking that other people are smelly? If you don't have to worry about that, then you have white privilege". But it starts from the assumption that white people think that way...which they don't. The test is, in itself, racist. This reminds me of the time I was a teacher and I caught a black kid selling pot in the restroom. He ran away and I chased him, eventually I caught him. But he had changed shirts with another black kid and then his friend ran away in his shirt, and he stood there "looking cool." So when I found him and took him to the office, he laughed and said, "how did you know it was me? Don't all white people think we all look alike?" He based his escape strategy on a false stereotype about white people! Stop stereotyping and assuming that other people are also stereotyping. Please.

@@ballhawk387 which is why the right thing to do is to increase works in other projects as well as job opportunities in low-income areas ( not just black areas) you can go to any large city in the US and find a homeless population living together on many streets and tents of many different races and ethnicities but this shouldn't even be possible at the percentage we have in a country as great as this and I know there are people who are homeless by choice me being one of them as well as people who are strung out on drugs but I remember dropping out of school in 2015 to get a job because my single mother with four kids couldn't afford anything more than bread and cup of noodles for us to eat for 3 years straight and this woman had two jobs let alone the fact that they were out in the boonies to make matters worse the education system basically put me in special Ed because I slept in class in first grade and it might sound very racist but when I looked at it there are plenty of highly intelligent kids of many different races and backgrounds and special ed so many who had no problems who are kept in there because of bureaucracy and paperwork issues it's almost like if you live in substandard housing in the inner City your life is worth nothing and at that level races not even taken into account

It's so depressing to see such a hyper-focus on race these days. I'm only 22 but I saw a very short-lived period of time where race relations in this country were actually doing pretty well for a while. Especially looking back on media from the 80's-early 2000's, I genuinely saw a lot of pretty well-spaced out representations of all different kinds of people. How many awesome sitcoms were there of white families? How about black families? Latinos? How about sitcoms that were written/produced by gay people that literally everyone loved? Race relations were the best they'd ever been, and I gained this perspective from my German-Canadian dad who moved to LA in the 80's, and my first generation Latina-American mom who lived there all her youth. They saw what it was really like living in a melting pot of a city, with literally every race and persuasion you could dream of, and how normal it was. They lament at how bad things have gotten since about the mid-2000's, when a lot of the SJW narratives started taking off. I really hope to see things tangibly improve, not just the walking-on-eggshells society we live in right now that demands "accountability".

I vibe with Lex more with how she reacts to music, but the way Brad thinks about these issues is often the exact thing I was thinking and occasionally he will point out something I didn't even notice. That test was a joke lol. As a white guy that grew up with a single mom on welfare, food stamps, etc. In condemned buildings and trailers sometimes with no heat. I tend to believe is classism over racism or race privilege. Hell in my current job myself and and another white guy got passed for promotion cause we "hadn't been in the department long enough" but the black guy that got the promotion has been here a month less. (No hate on him he is legit a great worker and awesome dude) And all the supervisors and the manager just happen to be black. Still not seeing my privilege.

I see at as much less of a class or race issue. Frankly, I see this as a culture war. The WOKE are telling the country that its ideals are racist. All this in an effort to change the culture from 1 of equity to equality. 2 very different things. I myself was raised by a single father. He worked (and still does) as an entry level framer for My entire life. I am 30 and I drive trucks, never been arrested (not to be interpreted as a brag. My dad was, quite often too.) and I am in the market for my first home. This is all to say that while I certainly could have done better, I’ve made better decisions than he did when he was my age. Thus putting myself in a more favorable situation. I had a similar upbringing as you too. Condemnable trailer life!!!

In a general sense I agree that it's more classism than racism, but when you look at the statistics of how many Black families live in poverty vs Whites, Black vs. White median income, etc., it starts to paint a broader picture. This is where people on both sides of the debate often miss a step. It's class AND race, both separately and combined.
@narsos6043
@narsos6043 3 года назад
@@Stirrups I know the statistics. Its just not been my experience. I don't like taking headline statistics without considering mitigating factors and what they aren't saying about those statistics to steer the optics to whatever the reports point of view is. I sometimes wonder if they are skewed by the big high population cities like Chicago, Detroit, NY and LA which I have never been which is why I don't see it. Or maybe its also the time its taking for people of color to organically move into wealth since discrimination was outlawed, because its not easy. But once 1 parent gets in that wealth bracket and the family grows up in that environment your much more likely to stay there I think. People of color that grow up in wealthy neighborhoods tend to come out with much higher paying jobs than a white guy that grew up poor. Its a wealth, mentality, connections, and status advantage from growing up in that environment. I haven't seen 2 people of equal skill where the person of color would be overlooked. In fact its incentivized through diversity programs to pick the person of color over a Caucasian even if the caucasian is more qualified. BTW just to be clear I'm not trying to argue racism doesn't exist all around. Just seems like more often its just being weaponized than not.

The people that have more in common with other cultures, nation states all over the world is always the lower classes (the global south). As ubiquitious as the global economy is, (I'll quote Axl here) It feeds the rich while it buries the poor. It is less about colour and more about class these days, however racism is more of 'soft power' presence than the overt days of the past, it hasn't disappeared, it has just become subtle. It can permeate as policies of meritocracy, policy based on means tested assets. If you want an accurate view of this test, look through the lens of the colonised, your native Americans and ask the same questions.

The 'unconscious bias' tests are even crazier IMO, but in a different way. I remember taking one while controlling my responses as much as is possible. I set a metronome, and purposefully delayed my answers so that every single answer was made with the same delay (+/- a few milliseconds obviously). The time I chose was long enough for me to be able to pick the correct answers with zero errors, but short enough that the test didn't yell at you for taking too long to answer. So 100% correct answers, all made with the same delay in answering. Obviously, the results I should have gotten were no bias for or against European Americans / whites, and no bias for or against African Americans / blacks. The results it gave me was a "very strong" automatic preference for whites, and an "extremely strong" bias against blacks. A different test taken the exact same way (same time to answer for every section, 0% errors, no warnings to answer faster) resulted in a "strong" preference for whites, and a "moderately strong" bias against blacks. These tests "feel" more legitimate than the ridiculous 'white privilege' tests, because they don't have the strange questions like the one in this video. But they are still a load of crap IMO too. The compiled results from the two I took indicated that an extremely high number (85%+) had some bias against blacks, with well over half of respondents having a 'moderate' or stronger bias against blacks. But that is what happens when the test doesn't give a neutral result when the timing of answers is controlled to artificially eliminate any bias you might actually have.
