Appears I've made a huge mistake with our Land Rover Discovery 2. I knew we would run into issues when buying an old Land Rover Disco 2, but I truly wasn't expecting it to only last 1 week from the time we brought it home. I suppose what they say is true - a Land Rover will always get you there; a Land Cruiser will get you home... Here's what happened when we took our Land Rover D2 off-road on Daytona Beach.

More About This Video
Our Land Rover Discovery 2 has been nothing short of a pain since we purchased it. From the door panel falling off five minutes after we bough it to breaking down a week later, Land Rover Discovery ownership has been worse than I expected. After owning the L322 for a while and being a Land Rover Enthusiast for years, it's easy to see why even Land Rover Enthusiasts HATE the Land Rover Discovery 2. They seem to be a constant stream of oil and problems.
Be sure to subscribe to the channel and turn on notifications to see what the fate of our Land Rover Discovery 2 is in the next video. Next time we'll show what our plans are for the 2002 Land Rover Discovery 2. Buckle up... it's going to be a rusty ride in our Disco 2.

Not entirely sure what happened with the audio here, but with everything that happened in this video, it was worth uploading anyway. I'll upload a video Friday with the fate of the Discovery 2...

i literally just saw a land cruiser being towed on the side of the road here in california after a long journey offroading the disco today. honestly it’s all about the care of the previous owner. if they don’t have receipts and they’re not rich or mechanically inclined when you speak to them...chances are you’ll probably get a dud. these cars need to basically be taken by a professional and have all after-market components installed. the entire cooling systems usually have to be replaced with better parts. gaskets will go sooner than later if the engine overheats a lot. i even keep getting evap codes that i have to turn off every now and then because there’s some barely existent leak in the fuel line somewhere. but you know what? it’s the most fun car i’ve ever driven. being able to take a car anywhere with 100% ownership and control is the best thing ever and I wouldnt trade this car for a toyota EVER :D

@stevelewis2220 5 лет назад
Exactly, they knew the fan needs replacing, they even had a spare, I did not hear that they have fixed it yet and they are surprised when it over heated in 90F heat, probably cooked the engine now.

Andrea M I’ve had my D2 V8 10 years. Never broken down yet. It get serviced every 6 months and the cooling system was replaced 5 years ago and the hoses were looking swollen. I live in Queensland Australia so it’s baking hot summer up here. Keep maintaining and she will be just fine!

I know it's a tad late of a comment but it seems like there was some overheating issues with the vehicle that they just completely ignored and then the discovery blew up and they blamed it on the discovery? Really bro?
@nialgivens8594
@nialgivens8594 5 лет назад
A few things you should have done/known before entering D2 ownership. 1. Monitor your coolant temps via an OBD scanner and not your instrument cluster. The cluster doesn't move until 240/250*F at which point you're smoking head gaskets or slipping liners especially on later engines like your 4.6L. 2. Tear out your entire cooling system and start over. Every part. Every hose. Your fan clutch is likely worn out and too weak to properly pull air in especially in low range, low speed. Switch to the Genuine Land Rover Grey 180* thermostat while you're in there for the overhaul and regular green coolant. Flush the engine free of orange dexcool thoroughly. Good luck! Hopefully you didn't kill the 4.6.

Not sure if it's the same as the p38 but here in Australia because it's so hot in Queensland we changed the thermostat housing to where it originally should be with the old Buick designs V8 the engine runs so much cooler.

Why are you driving on a public beach in low range? Honda Civics go out there. The more load you put on the engine, the more likely you are to overheat, especially on a beach in the summer.

Well guys you did it. You finally lived up to the channel name with the D2! Hope it turns out okay for you two. Also, remember what I told you about really soft sand if you ever get stuck, air down the tires to about 10psi.

What a pair of muppets. Just stop running it in low range for one; for two, if it overheated that badly, stop and allow it to cool down. Don't keep driving it and making it worse. If you were "sliding" in the "soft" sand, air down, numpties!
@248clones5
@248clones5 3 года назад
It made that noise because y'all were in low. You really only need low if you are rock crawling, deep mud, or climbing steep hills. Even with street tires that D2 could handle the sand in high. Change your thermostat to a 180. It is SUPER easy. All you need is a pair of pliers. Get an Autool or and UltraGauge so you can actually monitor your temp. You also need to have someone check your front drive shaft. If it goes out it will usually be on the highway and it will destroy your transmission.

You don't want it to overheat. The heads are made of aluminum and its really easy to damage the heads and gaskets.

Looking back, it made a fun experience of it 😂 The Jingle Bells was actually the ice cream truck! When we were sitting at Starbucks waiting for Lucky to tow us out, Nic kept humming jingle bells, and it was driving me insane! When I watched the video back to edit it, I realized why that was stuck in our heads haha.

SpecialFX 2000 There are a few things you can try. They have low temp thermostats for the disco it brought mine down from 217 to about 200. Are you loosing any Coolant? If you are that can cause overheating. If you want to send me an email I can walk you through some of the different problems with these discos overheating.

Dude... I thought this guy was more mechanically inclined. He needs to get out and check how much coolant he has. Ots an old rover so it probably leaks coolant and/or burns just a little bit.

If u buy a used Disco u should better have any knowledge about cars and some spare time to do afterpurchase maintenance. It's your fault that you can't handle it, not the Disco. In the right hands that car is great and gives a lot of fun.
@EtowahValleyRovers
@EtowahValleyRovers 4 года назад
It sounded exactly like when my transfer case popped itself in neutral and would crunch if you put it in Park. All I had to do was shift back to high range and I was fine. Also It sounds like you bought one with overheating problems if it starts to overheat when the AC’s on but that’s just me. You might need a fan clutch, a radiator, maybe even headgaskets. I’d just watch to make sure your coolant isn’t disappearing slowly because that would be a dead giveaway to serious problems.
@GOPisEvil

So it's been a year. What ever happened to your Discovery 2?
@ul6633
@ul6633 4 года назад
So when it comes to the low range in the D2, it doesnt like to go in at a stand still. You have to be going very slowly when switching to Neutral then Low or High. Works like a dream every time when doing that. Also change to a 180 degree thermostat, make sure the coolant system is bled properly and IF you can, install a secondary electric fan (if you can fit it) and have a toggle switch that keeps it running IF you don't want to find the leak in your cooling/heating system.

I've been on that beach dozens of times. Guess I'm confused as to why you guys were running LOW RANGE on a sandy beach in 90 degree weather. HIGH would have been just fine. Also, did anyone get out to check the coolant? Disco's drink it like camels. No wonder she got hot.

Look I had a disco 2..and that grand I seen stuck clearly is stuck cuz of tires or driver error.. I have a 04 wj overland with qudradrive front and rear vari-loks differantals.. And it's so much better then either my old disco or the new wk2.. Tires matter too.. But disco had no power.. So many issues headgaskets are common.. Yea nice design but just not for me..
@rodpolice
@rodpolice 4 года назад
Well, you could’ve shut it off in the beach for LONGER to let the engine cool down.... I personally would’ve let it sit for at least an hour. That would’ve gave it more than enough time to cool down. You didn’t have to commit and kill it :( any news tho? Would love to see it back on the road!

So to summarize: you guys bought a Disco 2 and uploaded an hour long video of basically complaining about how hot you were because you couldn't use the A/C because it would overheat the car. Then you guys did nothing to address that overheating issue (An issue that is arguably one of the defining traits of this generation of Disco, which a "Land Rover guy since I was 5 years old" would have known). You neglected to do even a simple TD5 thermostat swap that would have taken all of maybe 15 minutes. Then you took it out onto the beach in the hot Florida weather. Then you got angry when it overheated. I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that there hasn't been an update on this in a year because it puked out a head gasket and needs either a new head or a new motor because it overheated so bad it slipped a cylinder liner. What a waste.

Man this video is cringe... Everyone in the LR community knows that when you buy a Land Rover, the very first thing you should do is preventative maintenance. It sounds like you just bought it and took it out to the beach on a hot day and in low range. Don't blame the Land Rover for your ignorance... if you know nothing about cars then yea... get a Toyota!
