For anyone reading this, if we're ever allowed to travel again, as a cross-country train connoisseur, the trick to surviving long-haul rides like this is to set up camp in the restaurant car for as long as you can. So much more room to sit, more room to sit comfortably, and more room to get up and walk around when you need to. Sometimes, the canteen may close, but not the car, so if you're on an overnight train, you can sleep in there, if you want to. I don't even try. But trust me, restaurant car. It's so much better.

For anyone else planning this - there’s a proper restaurant on the sleeper train from London to Penzance! There’s also a sleeper train with beds from Aberdeen to London. Not the cheapest travel option though of course

@Kara and Nate did the Trans-Siberian ride and had a fantastic time. They were on trains easily for about a week, maybe a bit longer. They lived on powdered coffee and instant noodles and really found a lot to love about the adventure!

There is just a direct trains from Aberdeen to Penzance that woulda made your trip alot easier.

Most northerly point on the UK Mainland, Shetland may have a gripe about your bold statement. Oats? Porridge. Caption when boarding the train in Inverness "12.00 AM" Midnight? I know the summer sun in the North can be 18 hours long but you got a train at midnight? I would have gone John O Groats to Inverness, got the Caledonian Sleeper to London and early train to Penzance. Or Inverness to Aberdeen, sleep there and then catch the 08:20 from Aberdeen to Penzance, operated by CrossCountry, which the the longest non stop train journey in the UK.

This is nothing our school went on a coach for 25hours no stop for a ski trip. The coach was full so there was no space for sleeping etc but it wasn't bad at all

15:10 Oh man I can relate - once did 16 days in a row of 14 hour shifts at Tesco one summer due to people leaving while a recruitment freeze was going on. My waking life was Tesco, then I would go home, sleep and dream about Tesco, then wake up again to 14 hours of Tesco! Argh!

Can't believe you would choose the London-Penzance Night train without the plan booking beds. You could have just got an express service to plymouth and then a shuttle to Penzance.
