We train soldiers for war. Let's train them to come home, too | Hector Garcia

Before soldiers are sent into combat, they're trained on how to function in an immensely dangerous environment. But they also need training on how to return from the battlefield to civilian life, says psychologist Hector Garcia. Applying the same principles used to prepare soldiers for war, Garcia is helping veterans suffering from PTSD get their lives back.

The night before I left Viet Nam, I spent in a bunker as we were being attacked. That was a Wednesday night. Flew back to Fort Louis, WA on Thursday, out processed at 12:10AM on Friday morning, flew back to Chicago Friday morning, was home Friday PM, grilled steaks Friday evening. It was really, really weird. It didn't feel right. More like a nightmare, really weird. A few days later, I was walking with a few other men on a college campus when there was some kind of a loud noise. Without thinking, I fell to the ground. The others looked at me like I was stupid, they didn't know that the previous week I was in VN. It was embarrissing .

Pat West Thank you for your service! Don't feel embarrassed, it happens & you aren't alone. You aren't the first one to do that, & won't be the last. Explaining to the people near you that you had a flashback/innate response to the loud noise, should help people realize the reality of PTSD in soldiers everyday lives. It NEEDS to be talked about more. Telling people what they can do to help you if that happens again is helpful to you and others. Good luck & thank you again for everything that you have sacrificed. ❤

Hi, providing support to help soldiers return to productive, welcoming, balanced life is so important in my opinion because otherwise there is the danger that soldiers will bring war back with them INSIDE OF THEM. The world needs HEALING in so many ways these days.

JaLuBru I have, actually. One comment about how humans are not there as a species does not change that this is treating the symptoms and not the cause. Talking about wars as some sort of nebulous inevitability, when all of the ones America was in for at least half a century were completely preventable and pushed for despite that is much bigger problem than the people going there suffering afterwards.

Hello, Doctor Hector Garcia. One of the first serious investigators to treat war neuroses was doctor David Harold Fink (USA / writer of Realease from your nervous tension), which he used based on Ivan Pavlov's research. You live in a peaceful country, thank God, and you do not know; But I tell you that treating the war neuroses is important not only for war situations, but even for very violent countries like mine; CONGRATULATIONS for creativity and insight; Congratulations on your research. We do not have good medicine here, nor good universities. We are a country underdeveloped and driven to extreme violence by socialism of the last 13 years. Civil disarmament has made urban violence rise from 2003 to 2016, and we are the 15th most violent country in the world with 22.5 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants and a total of almost 60,000 intentional homicides a year, according to the UN itself (Our country is more violent than Iraq). Our population is neurotic and aggressive. I am affected by this environment and I enjoyed your research. Once again, congratulations (sorry for the bad translation, I do not speak your language, our education is not good either). I'm Brazilian and my name is George Ferraz.

Spastmatiker I like TED talks, we get to have a conversation. But there can't be a conversation when a Spanish guy wants to talk people call him "dirty Mexican, or other slurs" or a Muslim guy being called a "terrorist". I think I'll unsub from the channel, the website is much better. Advice you to do that as well

I've been following TED for years now, and really loved what they uploaded, but the last month or two they have uploaded really bad stuff that isn't "Ideas worth spreading" like the fat acceptance, SJW and islamophobia videos, and that is why people are upset. i hope it's just a phase, and it will go back to normal with the comment section and the videos. there is nothing wrong with this ted talk in my opinion :)

The content isn't changing as much as the audience is. We're at the point where simply saying "don't kill my family please" results in hundreds of people spamming reasons why killing a family is justified.

The war leads to many misfortunes, and the effects of wars such as the Vietnam War are quite fatal for soldiers. Instead of protecting the country by risking their lives, I think we should help soldiers, including support, to get back to their daily lives as a society. I hope many people will improve with the psychological treatments like those in the lecture.

My chain of command all denied my chit for TAPS. I had to write my resume off a template online because my Chain of Command couldn't be bothered to have me attend a transitional class that would have given me necessary job skills. Then I was denied my GI Bill benefits by the Oakland Regional VA so I went to school on fafsa alone even though I was wrongly denied GI Bill benefits because Oakland was over burdened with claims so they either denied out right or records were destroyed. I spent 8 years trying to attend community college until I became homeless and without any income. I started attending VA mental health sessions until 2 years later when I finally was able to get a response on my claim and was awarded 100% disability for mental health issues. The taxpayers now have to pay me disability for the rest of my life because I was not given the opportunity to better myself and become successful. The sad thing is that if I had just gotten the help I initially requested thst my situation wouldnt have devolved until I was no longer able to care for myself.

People that thumbs down a video like this are spiteful. There is war and he states that. Don't dislike a video of someone trying to help a medical condition. You can get ptsd from being a slave, raped, assaulted, watching someone else's suffering. This guy's is only trying to improve the information and science around psychological medical conditions; in particular ptsd. If you don't like a particular part of it... Cry me a river. It's rude to insult someone else's intelligence because yours is inadequate or biased.

So? They still need to be taken care of. When Vets come home sick it is bad for everyone. It affects everyone close to them. They are more likely to suffer mentally, physically, fall into substance abuse, become violent, or end up on the streets due to not being able to function properly.

Huge majority of soldiers don't suffer from PTSD, there's an incentive from the VA that gets more money depending on how many serious cases they deal with. Thus they push for as many cases as possible.
@DeepfriedNutz
@DeepfriedNutz 7 лет назад
Isaac Asimov Maybe because the majority of soldiers who get deployed don't experience close quarters combat, I guess you forgot about that. Many don't have to see dead bodies either. Soldiers who kill up close and see blown up corpses are much more likely to experience PTSD, kinda fucking obvious. So your comment is pretty flawed.

How about not sending them to war (and I don't mean drones)? People should not think is normal this never ending wars that they are always in. I know that he say in the end of the video "that is better not to go to war''. But when you are putting your efforts in to making war a lesser burden to the belligerent, then, even indirectly you are helping in. Cause the burden tend to persuade society to stoping wars.
