We all know the arguments that being vegetarian is better for the environment and for the animals -- but in a carnivorous culture, it can be hard to make the change. Graham Hill has a powerful, pragmatic suggestion: Be a weekday veg.

Everyone here that is upset about how "murder is ok but only on the weekends" or "if you can do it weekdays why not weekends too" or whatever other reason you have against this diet suggestion need to remember that this is for meat eaters. The people that love and will most likely always eat meat. With this weekday vegetarian idea, it creates a way for people who never considered being vegetarian, a chance to start doing so without it being overwhelming. Thinking about never being able to eat something again is a lot more overwhelming and will most likely result in a failed attempt. However, knowing that you just have to wait 5 more days, 4 more days, 2 more days, until you can eat it again, is a lot easier. And after people try the weekday veg idea, they can discover that it's a lot easier than they thought, they feel a lot better, etc and become a full-time vegetarian. TLDR; A little is better than nothing & that should be good enough. Small steps are important. Big changes don't happen overnight.

To all of the vegans commenting that he's lazy, keep in mind that this method appeals to most people who usually say "it's too hard" to excuse their very frequent meat eating habits. This appeals to the population more & I'm sure that if people started doing this it'd have crazy positive impacts but it would also incline more people to make the full decision to become complete vegetarians/vegans. ((Basically Vegans please don't hate on small methods like these because in turn it results in many converts))

Seeing how this post is two years old I'm not sure if you'll see this response, but veganism should be the end goal. What this guy is promoting is that you can be a flexitarian and be done with it. No. Look I have no problems with someone transitioning to veganism as long as that is thier end game.

I am Vegan, it was journey. First I switched to only white meat n fish, then I limited this to three days a week. Then I just ate fish 3 times a week and I added in a vegan day once a week. Gradual changes. Then fish once a week, 3 days a week Vegan. This gave me time to adjust. learn about my tastes. Budget was an issue, I couldn't afford to buy loads of things I wouldn't eat.I think if I had just tried to go vegan I wouldn't have achieved it. I admire people that can just switch. I needed to do it this way. Also now it is much easier, vegan products, nut milks, ice creams, desserts taste better than dairy, so it's not really a sacrifice. I think we should respect everyone's journey and acknowledge, praise and reward any behaviour that is working towards veganism. We should never criticize steps towards a more compassionate lifestyle imho.

This is obviously not the most mindblowing video, it can maybe seem kind of lazy and halfassed if you're vegan yourself. But small steps like these are important, it's better for the invironment and our future if everybody cuts out most animal products than if only a few cut's out all animal products and the rest just doesn't really care, and just throw themselves in meat, because they don't wanna be like the "vegan cult".

For the self-righteous vegetarians think about this: an extreme environmentalist might make the following argument, 'If you really cared about the planet you would stay home every weekend, not driving your car or using any electrical appliances.' A vegetarian can't deny that this would decrease pollution but how many would actually adopt this strategy? What excuse would a vegetarian come up with for not following this even though he/she knows there is some truth to the proposition? The man's thesis is we don't have to follow something 100% in order for it to make a difference, a precept which we all clearly abide by when we aren't in love with our own sanctimonious image.

That would be true if you had a better analogy. I think you misunderstand his position. He is proposing that people eat alternatives to meat for ethical, environmental and health reasons. He did not propose that people stop eating entirely. A better analogy you could use would be to use electricity from solar power as an alternative to fossil fuel. Just as protein is found in more ethical food choices, solar energy is also better for the well being of the environment.

As a vegan I'm really bothered by the "so only two days a week you support murder". That isn't this conversation, this is a discussion about the health benefits of less meat and the environmental impact. Clearly meat eaters aren't sympathetic to the notion that killing pigs is cruel mass murder. Your disgust and dismissal of their environmental motivations shows a great deal of immaturity on your part, and an inability to participate in a dialogue. Animal cruelty is not what this talk is about, did you even watch the video?

You are totally right. I certainly didn't become a clean vegan in one day! It took a full year of phasing things out of my diet. I first went from dairy milk to almond, then I started to cut out cheese, and so on. If you are interested in vegetarianism, I would try a couple of days a week. Or all meals except dinner, and then slowly transition. Part of going vegetarian is learning to prepare vegetarian meals. It isn't just salads and side veggies! There is a really great blog community surround plant based meals, try googling for recipes! I wish you luck in your efforts!
@JustLIkerapunzel

Jenna Ramond Yeah I think this principle is actually pretty great exactly because it's closer to average eating habbits than to vegan eating habbits. It makes it more convenient & there isn't much room left for excuses and all the arguments comming up against a vegan diet. So promoting it makes lots of sense if you ask me. People will start becomming more aware of their food choices this way and also become more aware of the fact that they are eating animals that got killed just to end on someones plate. But therefore I'd also rather suggest a week-day vegan diet instead of a week-day vegetarian one because there's lots more you need to become aware of when trying to stick to that. The more you'd get into this topic, the more it will make sense to stick with such a diet - you'd start to educate yourself and ask yourself for the reasons why you're so attached to the habbit to eat animal products. So I'd say it should be promoted a lot more in this way! It increases empathy that's been destroyed with all the commercials & society and so on and therefore make anyone vegan that possibly could be open to it. I have to say I'm eating animal products so far. But exactly videos like this & friends who aren't judgmental against me eating that stuff but encouraging on wanting to learn more about food helps me rethink of what I though was wrong and right :)

Did he just say a hamburger a day can increase his risk of dying by 1/3? The risk of dying is currently at 100%, as we all die. By a third of what? And despite all of that, any study would have to be complete correlation not causation. That was just such a stupid psuedoscientific statement, I almost want to believe it was a joke.

This TEDTalk was my first step of becoming vegan. When I first heard it, I picked up weekday vegetarian and ate seafood on the weekends. Later on, dropping off seafood and became a full vegetarian. Later did I learn that there’s a vegan diet which has the lowest carbon footprint and environmental impact and from vegetarian to vegan, it was a quick switch, but the entire transition took me around 3-4 years! I’ve been vegan for almost 4 years now and I’m loving it!

Neat, I did this 2.5 years ago. For health, not the critters. Instead of eating animal products two or three times per day every day, I only eat one to three meals including animal products on the weekend or holiday or other special social event--especially where traditional foods are made and consumed. Lost weight, got healthier, FEEL BETTER. WFPB! I'll keep on doing it. Also Michael Pollan is right.

This is how I ended my then-addiction to soft drinks ten years ago. It was small steps. I knew I wouldnt have the will to go cold-turkey so I switched to soft drinks only on the weekends, cup filled with ice. I then switched to sugary drinks only with real organic sugar (the side effects of artificial sweeteners are scary, yikes!) I now stick to drinking mostly water, or unsweetened tea on occasion. I know my health would be completely disastrous by now if I had continued my path on soft drinks. Anyway, going to try to consume red meat one a week, and eventually hope to make the switch. Good luck to all of you out there trying to make the planet a better place and your body happy and healthy!!

It took me 1.5 years to leave dairy out of my plate when I was lacto-vegetarian. I really liked cheese and was seriously addicted to it, and it seemed impossible to ditch dairy at the time. Now I've been vegan for 6 years and regret every single day that I continued eating cheese despite of knowing how cruel the dairy industry was. Go vegan today and if you are anything like me, you will thank yourself later in life.

Because people have the freedom and the right to create a diet/way of life that is appropriate for them as individuals. Not everyone is ready or necessarily wants to never again ever have the option of a piece of chicken or a cheese sandwich in their entire lives. I know that for me, going 100% vegan overnight didn't work at the time. I did it twice and I either physically tired of never having a piece of cheese or meat or I grew tired of the verbal abuse from other vegans who endlessly found ways to criticize me even when I strove to do veganism "perfectly". Now, it's gone full-circle for me. I am currently modifying a food plan where I've decided I want to eat vegetarian six days a week but if I choose, allowing myself to eat meat on a weekend day. Maybe someday I will be 100% vegan. But I'm not worried or obsessed with it. I've been feeling better since I'm eating more plant-based and that's really all I care about. Part-time vegetarianism can work! :)

Well we do live in a world of cause and effect. Mr. Hill explained it pretty well in his little speech. It takes energy and resources to produce the meat that people eat, and as more people choose to eat meat and incorporate it into every meal, more energy and resources - such as fossil fuels, water, and land - are needed to grow and process meat in order to meet consumer demands. Such increased use of resources results in increased pollution, water shortages, land use issues, etc.

Weekday veg is a great huge step in the right direction. But please understand there's no such thing as responsibly, ethically sourced fish or any other animal product. This is where part-time veg is misleading. Sure, it's a fantastic thing to be vegan 5 instead of no days. But we're fooling ourselves and still doing a lot of damage if we think we've 'arrived' at a comfortable, sustainable point. Not a matter of judgement but fact. It's also vitally important know the great JOY of going vegan, at least with food. To know that our actions are aligned with our deepest values, that our choices are based upon kindness and love. Vegan food is just real food for real people. It's food minus dead bodies, food minus 'excretions' (dairy and eggs) that are products of unfathomable violence. And it's wonderful to know that we can now enjoy a wide variety of delicious plant-sourced dairy and eggs/ egg replacements.

If you changed his words which focus on the agenda of meat eating with Bible and Jesus, you'd have a very nice piece of religious dogma on your hands.

"Meat is the best source of protein, iron, vitamin B, riboflavin, thiamin and niacin." No, you are incorrect. Riboflavin, thiamine, niacin and bioavailable iron can all be synthetic and cost almost nothing. The cheapest single source of complete protein is soy, and it's still much cheaper to produced even if you take the cost of extraction into account. Also vitamin B isn't one thing, but 12 different things. Did you mean B12? It's most efficiently produced from bacterial culture.

Another approach that's simple is just to cut out or minimize your consumption of lamb and beef (lamb is even more carbon-intensive than beef). I grill up burgers maybe four or five times a year, and have maybe two or three steaks a year--and that's it for my red meat consumption. (With Asian food, I prefer chicken, pork, or tofu to beef.)

Before we just say things, it's useful to learn something about it first. Learn a little bit about speciesism and the philosophy of animal rights. There's a far more sophisticated and vibrant conversation there, which at no point resorts to name-calling or pointless obscenities.

Two-faced two-faced. Science does not know any reason to give up meat. Also, people like to eat because of the meat's influence in the evolution of the brain and body!

It's great that you are considering the animals. But dairy and eggs are extremely cruel industries that aren't any better than the meat industries. Please watch diary is scary on RU-vid or Earthlings for more information.

“why am I not a vegetarian?” well that sort of intention just seems like you wanted to fit in with the “green guys” group without actually understanding the why so you buy the idea of it in a discount to wear that chic green identity. Cheap move bro, take your time to really understand the why rather than torturing yourself for that green compassionate identity. Seems like you’ve been selling yourself this idea of half this and half that so much I can see it in your outfit.

The whole idea of this is creating massive change in a society. We won't be able to tackle problems like climate change or animal abuse if only 2% of the population are being perfect vegans. It would be way more effective if 100% of the population were imperfect vegetarians. I think we can all agree that the goal is to reduce animal consumption to a minimum. And I highly doubt that most meat eati g people will accept to completely abandon meat.

@@leonmorel789 don't worry mate, I'm just trying to noise in the better action. I'm in no state to expect people to be perfect vegans. I understand this video is a chewable idea for the majority for now. So good for him, my comment is just a bait for viewers to allow themselves to possibly seek why it's better to just drop meat completely in the long run.
