Remember, everything is to scale, including the planets and sun. If they made the planets bigger, they'd have to make the walk longer (and it's long enough as it is lol).Gives you a bigger appreciation of the size of the solar system. It's a nice walk when the weather is good. Hopefully works will be finished next time you come.

I didn't know they where there, so interesting, what a great idea to get some aerobic and mental exercise!! St Kilda has really been upgraded since I was there, glad the artist vibe has remained! Love the sun, very tactile and worth the "walking'' effort! 🤗👋 (I wish the ship to Tasmania hadn't been moved further away, too hard now!) Thanks 👍

You should have gone to Phillip Island for the day. The penguin march there in the evening is delightful. They walk right past you on the paths as well. My son put his hand into a nest - against the rules, of course, and he was about eight - and he was bitten by one. Taught him a lesson, and not many people get bitten by penguins in their lifetime. LOL Out towards Phillip Island is The Nobbies, where seals are lolling all over the rocks, too.

Did not expect to enjoy the Solar Walk. Thought it would be as boring as all.. get out. But YOU - with your enthusiasm and all the little details -actually made it fascinating! Well done. Really did get to experience the sense of distance and proportions. [* Big applause to the creators.] Good job with the scooters too. (Yeah - that Wind Chill Factor can really catch visitors off guard in Melb - and here in Tassie too. Straight off the Antarctic. Googling the daily forecast: deceptive. Always take extra layers! ) Thanks for taking us on this excursion.😃👍

They are making a viewing platform there and it will be much better when it's finished. Over 1300 penguins live in that area and when it isn't a building site penguin spotting is very easy. I was disappointed Rob that it was under construction for you guys but it's all about timing. The solar system's walk is great and even locals are not fully aware of it

I never even knew St.Kilda had penguins. Learn something new everyday. Did not know about the walk too. I've walked along the beach more towards Sandringham, Black Rock and Mentone than those areas. Saw a seal on the beach once which never expected. Only seen the fairy penguins at Philip Island which a few hours from Melbourne. Also the ones at Victor Harbour in South Australia.

In Tassie there are free camping spots at a beach near Penguin (go figure!) where the penguins walk past the tents/campervans at night. They are noisy though and a bit smelly! There are also 2 proper viewing areas in towns either side of Penguin on NW coast. The town of Penguin itself is worth a visit too, get a selfie with the Big Penguin🐧

Terrific you made the trip along the beach SolarcSystem Tour and stayed into the evening to at least try to see the local Penguins. 🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️❤️ I do hope you have gained appreciation of the scale of our tiny solar system. A scale rarely appreciated on pure visualisation given the numbers. The tiny nature of the planets compared to distances between them. The massive ratios of gas giants to the rocky inner inner group and the Suze of our sun relative to all the planets. Yet not clear is how insignificant our sun is in the scale of stars in the universe. There are many stars so large even Jupiter as far as it is would be inside these huge stars. Such giants may have upto many tens the mass of the sun, but such massive stars consume all that Hydrogen mass in mere million years or less, before swelling beyond entire solar system and ultimately blowing apart in super nova events that seed heavier elements into space to become future planets and dust. All elements beyond iron can only form in such Nova events as nothing beyond Iron is able to form by fusion inside stars. In fact it is creation of iron that "poisons" a star to death by supernova. Large stars then leave a white dwarf neutron star or if massive enough a Black Hole. There likely exist many black holes of moderate size, and especially large ones, created by fusing smaller black holes become massive even to millions or more mass of our sun. These exist in centre of galaxies, holding these together. But small stars like our Sun consume their meager Hydrogen slowly to last billions of years like our Sun is already around 5 billion years old and expected to last a similar time yet. Smaller stars even longer. As big as the solar system as you have seen it now, it is tiny, mere light hours Suze. To nearest next visible star is around 4.7, a triple system with actually a too dim little red dwarf to visually show, requiring good telescope, at near 4.3Light years. Our galaxy is over 100,000 light years across, and other galaxies then outwards in order of millions of light years and up. We are less that a speck of dust in the universal scales. Good to see that you at least tried to see our little peguines. Sad that construction work sort of spoiled that a bit. Yet a trip to the Philip Island Penguin parade would have cost much time, with travel etc at least if not more than a day. There however you have them parade directly past the viewing public going from/to ocean into the dunes to their burrows. In the long solar system travel you would have seen a extensive stretch of beach which itself is only a small section of several large beaches along the east beach side with a few rocky breaks all the way down to the Port Philip Bay entrance at the south end. The western side has a number of beaches as well but also more 'marshy' less sandy parts best beaches are on the east side. Outside the bay the ocean side has many great beaches bother sides of the bay entrance, but here if anything the better beaches are west side, and along the coast where the Great Ocean road goes too. The East Bass Straight beaches have steeper coastal fringe harsher waves, less nice beaches. Not to say there are not also very good popular beaches on the east coastal area. Hope you still enjoyed the time at our bay beach area even if not especially warm that day. 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂👍👍👍💙

@@CharlieandRob I presume you mean at the Penguin Parade, that is most likely to avoid bright lights by some people or worse flash for photos. That would be scary and harmful to the Penguins . I am certainly not aware that there were ever photography and filming restrictions to Philip Island itself. Have done much photography of Koalas and coastline even of the seal colony though not much use as then I had no large telephoto lens. Distance too great so more ocean and seal rocks than seals.

I walked/cycled this in the rain years ago and what it taught me was just how strong gravity is over enormous distances. How these relatively tiny objects (by the standards of Space) tug at each other and keep each other in orbit, is astounding. you can't even see the planets from each other except for the inner planets, let alone the Sun itself which is only 2m in diameter at 1 billion to one scale. btw you skipped Alpha Centauri which is also to scale with this system (if you circled the Earth to come back to it - THAT is amazing!!).

I am so glad you went to St. Kilda beach. You need months to see all that Melbourne has to see, according to what you like to do. My aunt and uncle drove around Australia for 7 years, and still didn't go everywhere. Like me they were from England and so they understand how vast Australia. I don't think they went to Tasmania. Tasmania is more like England in the size and weather conditions. Queensland is beautiful if you like the sunny conditions and tropical feel with wildlife and beautiful beaches. The Gold Coast, a bit commercialised and the Sunshine Coast beautiful, and of course the Great Barrier Reef. Sorry I didn't visit you when you were in Melbourne. Next Australian visit consider visiting the World's largest scale model Solar System. It has a scale of 1:38 million. It starts at Siding Springs Observatory where the 37 meter telescope dome represents the sun, but you have to drive 200 km to reach Pluto. A great drive, and the planets are of course much larger than the small Melbourne model. Talking of astronomy, the giant radio dish at Parkes (another highly recommendable place to visit) has something interesting that never gets into the tourist books. In their garden they have an apple tree, that was grown from a cutting of Newton's apple tree. I believe that it too is a cutting of an apple tree, which is a cutting of an apple tree, all the way back to Newton's original. Even though it is an indirect connection, I love that descendants of Newton's tree are grown and revered by scientists like that.

In 2008 artists and scientists constructed a model of our solar system to a scale of one to one billion between St Kilda and Port Melbourne. Instead of navigating 4.5 billion kilometres from the sun to Neptune, and 5.9 billion kilometres from the sun to Pluto, you only travel 4.5 kilometres and 5.9 kilometres. The foreshore has always been a superb location to view the sun setting on the western horizon. Port Phillip Bay's crescent shape is perfect for a model where the 'sun' can be viewed from every one of the nine model locations.

Hi Rob and Charlie, I'm glad you got to see the sun at St. Kilda. I just pop out my back door and look up everyday (when it's not BLOODY raining in Australia!!!). LOL. Although I haven't done that walk, I do it would help illustrate in people's minds the sheer distances of space (and hopefully how futile it is to spend SO much money on space exploration, whilst so many people on Earth starve - for many reasons not to be mentioned here). There, that's my rant for the day. I hope you post the footage of your penguin experience or have you already done that? How's it feel to be back at home? I trust all the animals are well. Uranus should be in St Kilda proper rather than Middle Park. Did you see any galahs? They often around the median strip in the middle of the road. I know Beaconsfield parade really well I used to drive it everyday to and from work.

you won't see the Spirit in Melbourne anymore...it's new home, as of the 23rd of Oct, will be North Shore down Geelong...I wish we could send photos through here...do you guys have a Facebook page, I'd like to send you some pic's of the penguins on St Kilda pier...they were taken back in late Nov 2018 when my friend from the States was visiting...we were able to get up really close and see them, albeit they were hiding under the steps...

Just so you know, Captain Kirk (or are you a Time Lord, Rob?), but you're starting with Pluto at Port Melbourne Beach, and heading about 6 km south to St Kilda Beach, where the Sun is located.

Yes I did realise part way through that Pluto was in Port Melbourne Beach. My bad :(

for some reason i've never seen the "Sun" before despite walking along numerous times. Perhaps i was looking for a stone pedestal like the other planets. Didnt realize that big ball is the Sun.

Pluto is definitely part of the Solar System , the debate is whether it qualifies as a planet (it doesn't) . It is one of many "Kuiper Belt" objects . So , What Up St. Kilda ? How about updating yourselves .

Wow, that's a niche tourist activity as far as I know, although that entire foreshore area is a favourite part of living in Melbourne for many people. My best memory is after nightclubbing all night in my early twenties, watching the sun rise over one of the beaches along there with two gay friends with their heads snuggled in my lap while I sat back on my hands. We got some odd looks from the very early morning joggers, but it was lovely. I particularly like the Norfolk pines along there.

@@morkusmorkus6040 Art is subjective... we remember The Yellow Peril. The Solar System is a fascinating piece. You don't have to like all art but imagine a streetscape devoid of Art.

The best place to see penguins is in Tasmania. In Devonport there are loads. I have also seen penguins in Sydney while surfing.
