I never saw those as "rules", I always saw them as recommendations under the idea that "hey if you wanna look your best, then wear the things that will look the best on your body" but I never saw them being enforcedby anyone...
@meloello
@meloello 6 лет назад
I agree! I have a super large chest and to be honest sometimes those "rules" really help me balance out my body shape and that's okay too. I feel like they aren't strict restrictions but guidelines for women who struggle to figure out how to style their bodies. I am all about wearing whatever I want and feeling empowered, but sometimes that empowerment comes with me finding what works for my body shape.
@sashapearsall4098
@sashapearsall4098 6 лет назад
I really don't understand why they're looking at this in such a negative way when these rules (aka suggestions) can actually be really helpful for people that might not know what flatters their body shape to help them feel better in their clothing and just help confidence in general. Is it just me or have they actually made videos regarding what clothing suits different body types in the past or ones similar to that idea?
@tatianaharvey5028

Its also the fashion industry that says these things not the media. Think people should do some research. And the fact that the 'host' chose something she knew shed be comfortable and look fine in really bugged me, thats not fair everyone knows fine well how that one dress looks on everybody. They also could of used actual nice clothing items and colours that would of worked well instead of being a random thing theyve thrown together. Clothes are clothes and the fact that we have to wear them in the first place is annoying.

It’s a fact that certain clothes can make you appear shorter/taller/fatter/skinnier etc. Does this mean that you’re not allowed to wear them? No. Does this mean that you’d look better in other clothes? Yes. It’s nothing but innocent advice. Stop getting offended over such small things.

In an era where many people shop online for clothes and can't always try things on before buying, it makes sense for there to be style guides for certain bodies. It's just meant to be a helpful guideline so that ladies can have a better idea of what to shop for, and with so many clothing styles to choose, shopping without knowing what to look can be daunting. I'm also certain that not a single one of these style guides say "YOU CAN ONLY WEAR STYLES FOR YOUR BODY TYPE" because that would be absolutely ridiculous.

Well no one goes around saying oh that outfit doesnt look good on your figure, but society as a whole does, social media does. That statement may or may not have been literal. You dont have to abide to anything, at the end of the day, you have the choice whether to bend to the rules or not. But society pressures you into doing things they think are acceptable and most people say they abide to the rules because they essentially want to "fit in" with what others are abiding to as well. Yes they are suggestions, but people believe anything on the internet, therefore a lot of people follow those suggestion. Because a lot of people follow the suggestions, those who dont are seen as sticking out or unfashionable so they feel like they must "abide" to those suggestions or rules so they are not seen as unfashionable. So they can "fit in". Its all just psychological and peer pressure, that's why they say "rules that you have to abide by"
@cdrl3170

It just seems they’re so against ‘society’. Nobody is telling anyone what they can and cannot wear? Advice given about body types is there to help people choose clothes that best suit them, and thus help to promote body confidence. People are so quick to use the ‘blame society card’ and read into something that is actually intended to simply be helpful advice and be offended by it? Stop overthinking and getting so offended, and life will be simpler.

I 100% agree. There are always going to be exceptions to every rule, so if you think it looks cute on you, then wear it, but for the most part these "rules" aim to pinpoint what styles are generally flattering for your shape, and which ones are not. All of their outfits were just kind of eh to me. None of them looked terrible, but not one of them was suprizingly flattering on the wearer. Also, all the women seemed uncomfortable with what they were wearing. They should have given the women a few options and found things that broke these fashion "rules" that they actually really liked because right now the video just seems to be showing why someone wrote these rules in the first place.

Marissa Lane they’re not angry... this wasn’t an angry video 😅. There’s just a lot of annoyance around the fact that society perceived an hourglass as idealistic, so if u have it, u MUST show it off, and if u don’t have it, u HAVE to wear things to make u look like u have that shape. This video shows that if u wear something “not for ur body type” it won’t change anything, except ur confidence, and people probably won’t notice. Conclusion- dress how u like for yourself, without always feeling like it’s “to fit into society’s body goals”

Lmao, ok, the idea of body shapes, for *both men and women* is not from magazines. The shapes and sizes such as apple, pear shapes etc, aren't to "box" anyone. The idea of the shape categories are a guide to support people to enhance their natural features for what clothes will appear more flattering for their specific shape than other styles of clothing. It's not society "boxing" anyone, but now that we mention it, humans actually love to be categorized and boxed, such as Buzzfeed, for boxing themselves into the "screw society, we are going to break the rules".. cmon now Buzzfeed, you ain't slick.

I think sometimes people just get too offended. Like body shapes are a thing and it’s a fact that certain items of clothing look better on some body shapes than others. What the media and other sources do is give some advice on what looks better on each body type and something that will make women or men feel better in their own bodies. If you want to follow the advice, good. If not, no one is making you do it. Dramatizing things is not good and never was.....

I believe the recommendations we're made to flatter and accentuate some one's own figure. So, it's not a way to shame them but embrace what they have naturally. I believe the outfits that were the opposite of the recommendations were not a way show off the body type a person has but instead hide it. Like someone who is ashamed of their body would do. I also don't like the title. It makes it sound like it was a rule that is enforced. Usually when someone is looking for styling tips for their body, sources use words like "flatter" and "accentuate". I also want to point out, putting a camera to people's faces is a way to make the people reacting to the outfits not want to say their opinion but just say what will make everyone happy. And we all have to start being the real ones and give criticism in an informational way. Also, you guys say that someone should be able to wear what they think looks good but you all are asking for people's opinions like yours aren't enough? Isn't that the whole point? I like the idea of body positivity but you guys are making the people who support it look bad.

Dixie White I think it’s because she has more of a subtle hourglass figure. Her shoulders and hips are about equal and her waist does seem smaller in comparison. Kim k is clearly more exaggerated so comparing the two wasn’t smart lol.

Of course you can wear whatever you want.... but there are certain silhouettes that flatter certain body types. There are exceptions to every "rule", but this video shows why these guidelines exist, everyone looks more frumpy and everyone was disappointed with how they looked. And there ARE fashion guidelines for men, dress shirts and dress pants come in different cuts for different body types. The "rules" are not bad.

I was really annoyed by this whole video, tbh... And I normally like Buzzfeed. No one is forcing you guys to try to wear (or not-wear) anything. Those articles about women's clothing are just there to inform you what flatters your body type the most, and what doesn't flatter it. A point which you guys kind of proved since - lo and behold - none of the outfits you picked really flattered you. The advice is there for the taking, but I've never heard of this imaginary "rule" that states you HAVE to dress that way... Which made this whole video seem pretty pointless.

Pear shape does not necessarily need to have a small waist as long as the hips are wide, i mean you can have a small waist too but not all bodies are the same, take in consideration that the whole deal (Hourglass, Pear, Apple, Rectangle) is just a way to sort them easier but not accurate to all bodies as everyone has some difference to their body.

Hourglass is where the top and hips are wider than the waist. You don't have to have a tiny waist to be an hourglass, it just has to be noticably smaller than your boobs and hips, as long as your boobs and hips and proportionate to each other.

why is this a thing that's "offensive" to women? it's just some tips on how to look your best ?

What's potentially offensive is policing women's choices regarding what they want to wear (yes, even innocently, through magazines) and accentuating that women should always look ( and want to look) attractive. I don't think women in this video felt offended by it, just did it to sort of show that wearing clothes that are supposedly bad for you is not an end of the world?
