In yet another edition of Taryl's fuel additive experiment, Taryl goes over some comments recently brought to his attention made by another RU-vidr as well as attempts to start each engine yet again. Which ones will run? Which ones won't? What are your thoughts about fuel additives? Feel free to comment below and be sure to check out the other videos in the Fuel Additive Experiment playlist and check back for more regarding this test as well. And as always... It ain't the space shuttle, it's a lawn mower.

I’ve learned 3 things about fuel watching Taryl’s videos: 1) Buy ethanol-free fuel for your equipment (I have 2 gas stations that sell it locally). 2) Make sure your gas cans seal properly. 3) There is no advantage to using fuel stabilizers. And there’s your dinner!!!
@dkeith45
@dkeith45 3 года назад
The real test for the fuel stabilizers will be to see how long the gas in the sealed cans remains viable. I always treat the gas in my cans, and as every season ends, remove the gas from my machines, and make sure none is in the carb bowls either. Then add the stored gas the next season. HOw long will that work? I've heard two years, but?
@footfrek
@footfrek 3 года назад
I think the other thing that might be worth while in run the fuel out of the bowl with a cut off between the tank and carb.
@gedertr
@gedertr 3 года назад
@@footfrek I’ve had good AND bad luck doing that. I’ve had some bad luck with premix fuel gumming up when run dry (you never get it all out of the bowl...). For 4 strokes or injected 2-strokes (no oil in gas) I’ve never had any issues running the bowl “dry”.

Thanks Taryl for all your hard work. Maybe the reason all the E10 engines needed additional choke to keep them running at startup was because there was water accumulation in the bottom of the fuel bowls. At startup the water was being sucked up with the fuel, so the engine needed more choke. Once the engine ran on all fuel, it would run with the choke completely off. And the VP didn't have that problem because it was non-ethanol fuel, so no water sitting in the bowl.

It definitely doesn't go unnoticed, I think others would agree, regardless of the jerry cans or engines being sponsored, there's still lots of effort to make this series and I've always followed along. I personally use K100S+ and I've never had an issue, even with equipment sitting for a year or more, fires right up. However, with that being said, I use 91 octane ETHANOL FREE which I think is the biggest take away. I also personally recommend ethanol free fuel over stabilizers to all my customers! That's why I always thought the VP canned fuel should win your experiment because it's Ethanol free. As for the drama and rumours, who cares. If drinking bourbon is fuel addictive, then I will I will drink all I can handle. I agree with you Taryl. I quit using any fuel additives when I started watching g these videos. I have learned to run my equipment out of fuel at the end of mowing season here in the south. My equipment gave me no issues at all when I cranked it up last week to mow. Good job and keep the videos coming!

My 1989 moror home with a carbureted 454 sat for 5 years with half a tank of regular gas in it and it started right up. The onan generator no such luck. Love your channel. Keep up the vids.

Onans don’t like old fuel. Mine runs like crap every spring until it gets some fresh fuel to it.

One thing i would be interested in seeing, on the engines that surge and run poorly, try some of the """fuel system cleaners"" like B-12chemtool, or Techron, Lucas or Gumout that you pour in the tank, and see if it will get the carburetor cleaned out or not.

Travis Mauldin I worked in a carb rebuild shop, and after the degreasing tank my job was on the teardown bench. I could always tell when they had that stinking ass "Gumout"in 'em,I'd take the top off and get hit with the most god awful stench !!!!!!! I'd toss 'em outside for about an hour until they "aired out" !!!! All the rubber diaphragms,seat needles, were shot !!!!! They had to be run through the acid bath tanks before we could rebuild them !!!!!! Gumout is Garbage, don't use it!!!!!!!

Im hoping you guys can work this out. I love and respect you both, and yes, I usually go to Project farms to find the best products totally unbiased. Nothing personal, I just know that that's their specialty. BTW the space shuttle was mothballed years ago, so now it's the Orion capsule, lol Now's your chance to capitalize on a new catch phrase and officially call it yours, and there's your supper. ;) Great work buddy

We don't use any of those "snake oils" in our small engine/mower repair shop here in OH, either. The only thing we use SeaFoam for is using it in our ultrasonic cleaner we use for carburetors. It actually works great for that.

I have to agree with you 100% Taryl, Your experiment is right on target. However, I use StaBil just to keep the gas fresh particularly through the winter. I have been using it for an eternity it seems and hasn’t failed me yet. Nice videos.

Left my push mower sitting outside from November up until last week with no additive in the tank. . 87 octane pump gas 10% ethanol and a winter in Pennsylvania. Started in 6 pulls. And it was a el cheapo Huskee tractor supply lawnmower purchased in 2009.

Hey Taryl, we always run non oxygenated ( no ethanol) pump gas in our small engines in MN. I think it's about 89 or 90 octane. I would love it if you included it in your next test session. Love the videos.

I see you have the engines equipped with a valve in the fuel line. It would be interesting to see how shutting the fuel off and letting the float bowl burn dry would affect the starting. Actually I know it helps, because I do it.
@dkeith45
@dkeith45 3 года назад
It does help, but not forever. I've done that on an old Craftsman riding mower with an 11hp B&S to pull a yard cart in the summer, and sometimes in the colder months. Every time I shut it off for the day, I close the valve and let it run till it dies. That worked fine for two years. This spring it started right up as usual, but then died about thirty minutes later and wouldn't restart without starting fluid. I pulled the bowl and sure enough, sediment. Took the whole carb off and cleaned it and it ran good again. I guess next season I'll actually remove the bowl and dry it to see how long that works. But one thing for sure I learned is, the fuel filter in the gas line has no effect. Might keep out large particles like grass or something, but not the tiny stuff that eventually clogs the carb. Ofc, that tiny stuff could be coming in through the air filter too.
@crabtrap
@crabtrap 3 года назад
@@dkeith45 most likely the dry bowl allowed for gaskets and seals and o-ring to dryrot a bit also allows the internal carb body to oxidize(depending on ketal makeup), that accounts for your bowl debri. its a damned if u do, damned if you don't situation. last of the yrs i run dry ,then add straight seafoam to tank and give quick start then store the tractor. it will stop the dryrot and also never varnish and is a lube too

I have a Honda generator in Florida that I don't run until Hurricane season starts. I have been using Sta-bil in the fuel because I don't run this on a regular basis. ( It would be wise if I did.) When I go to start it I open the drain screw on the carb and let some gas flow out. The gas does smell old until the fresh stuff comes out but no varnish. The Generator starts on the 1st or second pull.
