My husband proposed to me in a cemetery. At my parents' resting place. He wanted to get "their blessing". It might seem weird to some but I loved it.

When you all leave the front doors of the closed church, the gravestone you pass in the graveyard with the shaking hands is an Odd Fellows grave. The placement of the fingers is purposeful.

Those walkways arent grave stones repurposed, theyre actually graves where people are buried! The ones inside are the same, people buried into the foundations. Isnt that so cool? The cemetery in our town has a number of unique and interesting graves you guys might love to see and the church itself is gorgeous.

I think the outside stones aren't actual graves. It was a common problem in old graveyards with limited space, as to what to do with old graves when space was needed for new ones. The remains would be dug up and deposited in an ossuary, while the markers would be "upcycled" in some way. Obviously not all the old bodies were moved, hence the famous gravedigger scene in Hamlet where they find a skull.

Did a little research: A skull with bat wings in a church monument could symbolize rebirth after death, with the skull representing death and the bat wing representing rebirth. The skull is usually depicted with feathered wings, which is a traditional medieval symbol that refers to both the inevitable and the re-creating element of death: the soul that flies to heaven. However, bat wings have a fleece, not feathers, which would have a more grim connotation. GREAT video!!

Noo!!!- a death and then baptism into a new life evil… thats what the batwings are…
@ThreadBomb
@ThreadBomb Месяц назад
I too did a bit of googling on this. Bats appear a lot in Renaissance art, and seem to have multiple meanings, including being used as a symbol to ward off evil. The ouroboros (self-eating snake) was a pre-Christian design that again had multiple meanings, but in a Christian context it symbolised eternity and heavenly life. The 'curtain' probably symbolised the 'veil of death' that separates the living from the next world. It all adds up to the most one of the most goth tombstones imaginable.
@Tanbaid-jafo
@Tanbaid-jafo 28 дней назад
And the snake eating it’s tail, also known as the Ouroberos represents the eternal cycle of death and rebirth in many cultures, combining this with the bat winged skull could give some credence to the vampire legend surrounding this grave, it also has dare I say it an almost Rosicrucian look to it who knows.
@jimpickens4067
@jimpickens4067 27 дней назад
No a Skull with Bat wings on a church monument does not symbolize rebirth after death, no amount of research would have lead you to that conclusion beyond a silly modern claim on the Internet from someone that probably does not live in a country or city that has Churches older than the Victorian era. The Skull is simply a Momento mori.

My safe place is my local cemetery that was opened in 1838 & is, to my knowledge, the final resting place of approximately 4,000 people. I have spent many a night there when I just couldn't sleep in my own bed for whatever reason & have gone there (it's like literally a 30 minute walk away), set up a small fire in a quiet corner & just savored the peace & sheer tranquility. I've even made "friends" with a fox who, over many many months, has grown a level of trust in me where she has introduced me to her cubs. I digress. I have genuinely felt safer in the cemetery at 3am than I have EVER felt walking thru the center of town at noon!! Thank you so much for sharing this. You both have a level of respect that is refreshing & I value the way you do some research into the places you visit that reflects in your commentary because it helps foster a better appreciation of what you're sharing than just seeing it.

Rhode Island where I live was notorious for vampires I think in the 1800’s. There’s a vampire legend of Mercy Brown who died of tuberculosis in 1892 I think. She had to be kept in an above ground crypt I think after death because it was winter and the ground was too hard to dig a grave. Mary’s body didn’t seem to decompose yet after exhumation they found two family members had gone through some decomposition so they came to the conclusion that Mary was “undead”, the term vampire wasn’t used. Mary’s heart still had blood in it. Her body didn’t decompose because of the freezer like conditions of the crypt which prevented her from decomposing. To try to save Mary’s little brother they burned Mary’s heart and liver and mixed it with water to give to her brother to try to save him. It was the superstition of that time, to also stop the “undead” influence. Her brother died 2 months later. What was left of Mercy was buried at the cemetery at the Baptist Church in Exeter. Mary’s farther never got tuberculosis. He lived long enough to see a vaccine made for the disease. Credit goes to Wikipedia for most of the information. I’ve heard the dirt on Mercy’s grave is black and has stayed that way since her burial.

I dig cemeteries. (Pun intended) When we were kids we'd take hallucinogenics and run through a local cemetery and check out the graves. We were totally respectful we were just fascinated with the whole deal.

Jessica, you explained why cemeteries are my safe space so well! I've always felt at peace there. Also, your nails are AMAZING. 🥰
