Nice to hear your views of Corfe Castle, I live 6 miles away in Swanage and walk to it most weekends, and have created several illustrated prints of it.

Warwick Castle has to on your list to visit Jodi. Its an inspirational castle that has had so many English artists draw and or paint it. Its what many Americans would think of as a castle as seen in many US TV shows of a castle is. Been there as few times with the kids and its a great place. I think there are 4,000 castles in the UK. It would take 10 years if you visit one every day.
This is why I love living in Dorset. You're never far away from a glorious beach, rolling hills, or a piece of ancient English history. You could spend a whole vacation exploring picturesque rural villages and towns set in stunning scenery, or the traditional seaside towns of the Jurassic Coast. We are lucky living in this corner of the world. I’m in the Weymouth area and it keeps us nice and central to visit new places even though I’ve always lived here.
I'd say your pink flower is Red Valerian. Here in Tipperary the invasive weed grows everywhere with scarcely a building or wall using lime mortar that doesn't have the destructive weed growing from it. If your pink flowers had a rank scent then it's more than a good chance to be Red Valerian.
JODIE..The pink flowers are called 'red valerian' and they prefer full sun, well drained soil (can even grow out of stone walls) and flower for long periods. See if you can order some seeds...they may survive in Vegas!!

The feeling you describe is common in places like that. Those who loved the places are still there sometimes. At Llansteffan Castle in Wales, I felt that someonelong before me had loved the view over the sea. I could feel his presence. At the Iron Age hillfort at Uffington, there is an even stronger feeling, as if you just walked into a fair and they want to welcome you.
If/when you return to the UK, there are many more castles well worth visiting. In the north of England, we have Alnwick, Bamburgh, Warkworth, Raby, Barnard, Muncaster, Richmond and many others. Some are ruins and some are still occupied.
I live about 60 miles away from Corfe in Portsmouth and yes you are right, it is an amazingly beautiful place. I especially liked the stone tiles on some of the roofs on the houses and shops in the village.
So glad you enjoyed the part of the world I was brought up in. Corfe is a lovely place to visit as is the whole of Purbeck. So many lovelyplaces to go to ❤
As an Englishman I am proud of the beauty and history of my homeland , I was born and grew in the county of Suffolk in East Anglia , a county full of ancient history , from the Celtic tribes , the Romans , Saxons , Vikings and everything else . Colchester , Bury st Edmunds , Cambridge to name a few are on my doorstep . I know live in the Czech republic , if you admire ancient castles this land is full of them , different architecture to the Norman castles of England .
I used to drink in the pub The Fox Inn, in the village of Corfe, that was 40 years ago I expect it has changed quite a bit by now. Always one of my favourite castles. Glad you had a good time.
I've noticed watching people like yourself with british heritage on youtube, they feel a belonging when they return. You can take the person out of Britain but you can't take Britain out of the person.🇬🇧🏴
Reminds me of being a kid. Used to go to Wales on holiday and sometimes had a look at the castles. Hope you had (or are having) a great time in England! 😄xx
Many castles in Britain were "slighted" by the government at the time of the republic (after the English Civil Wars), and by other people. The upside is that most of the slighted castles were not updated or restored, so that today we can see what they would have looked like in medieval times. The room with the "tunnel" that you explored looked like a room that is half full of earth which has not been cleared. The entrance would have been a normal doorway, and the arches were for arrow slits or windows. As you say, the castle was built on several levels. P.S. It's difficult to get a good look at the pink flowers that you liked, but they look like red valerian, which grows like a weed in some parts of England.
I've been to many Welsh Castles, phenomenal. I've never been to Corfe I actually Castle, thank you for sharing this, I actually learned a lot. Definitely not Boring. 🌲👵🇬🇧
It's nice to see a different perspective on some of our historic places . I think the ruined places do have a beauty of their own with the wild flowers and views . The space you were in May well have been a brewery , kitchen or a bakery . If it was near the outside wall it may have been a medieval gardarobe. They are a great source of information nowadays on the medieval diet . As a thin and over years floor levels change . I'm glad you enjoyed the visit .

Well that was strange seeing you two in Corfe, just a few miles from my home town of Swanage, Glad you liked the area though we probably take it for granted.
I was there a couple of months ago. If you go to Poole ensure you take the Harbour boat tour. And of course the Swanage steam railway is a fun day out.
Spent a scorching weeks holidaying in one Corfe’s thatched cottages with my then hot new girl friend back in my early twenties…When we ‘eventually’ got out of bed each morning, I’d go to the local bakers for fresh bread…happy days.
I hope you saw the steam train , if you were in the national trust car park you can walk up the bank and stand by the side of the rail as it goes by, also I wonder if you found the Scott Arms a really good pub for food that overlooks the castle from a distance. Hope you enjoyed your visit .
Hi you hit the nail on the head when you said to walk in different directions, I've been there a few times as it's about 65 miles from my home, for me it's one of my favourite castles because as you approach it you can see so high up on the hill, I so wish you went another 45 miles south and saw Lulworth Cove and door which is breathtaking and has a castle, P's at the entrance to Corfe castle there is a lovely pub with good food but i can't remember the name, take care.
I will recommend a book - Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. It gives you a real feel of living in the 12th Century and because he`s a thriller writer it is very readable without being a bit dry like so many factual books .
Corfe castle is beautiful but with it's oubliette, it also has a dark side. I can't imagine how horrible it must have been for prisoners to be thrown down that hole and left to die in the worst conditions you can imagine.
I live near a ruined castle and I constantly grieve about it being destroyed even though I know the reasons for it. Also the destruction of the monasteries by Henry VIII has left a big scar on our architectural history and culture. Ruins are still impressive but intact they would be spectacular
Just a thought, but that room you entered by crawling through that passage. With those outlets at floor level, is it possible that you were in one of the Garderobes? (Toilets)
I have 2 friends who live nearby in the seaside town of Swanage, a favorite seaside haunt of my family when I was a kid.. I's about a 3 hour drive from where I live in Berkshire.. An English King got stabbed at Corfe castle visiting his auntie, he rode away but died as he tried to escape, I think it was Edmund I... Great little vid!!
Amazing place, but the castle isn't the real treasure; it's built on a neolithic mound far older than Stonehenge. Appreciated by all of 1% of visitors...
If I didn't already loathe the Parliamentrians for treason, oppression and themurder of an anointed king, I would hate them for the destruction ov treasures like that.
